Attention: Business and Homeowners You May be Eligible for a Septic System Rebate The State may be allocating up to $100 million dollars to the East End to upgrade residential septic systems. There are 81,000 aging cesspools on the East End that are leeching harmful chemicals into our bays and groundwater. New systems can cost anywhere between $5,000 and $10,000. Don’t be fooled by cesspool company gimmicks. Treating cesspools and drywells by aeration and acid methods to create temporary pathways for drainage, in fact drives pollutants downward that accelerates the failure of your drainage system as well as harms sensitive groundwater aquifers. With ESi, there may be no need to replace your septic system and still qualify for a rebate. Their time honored method will completely extract the accumulated greases and sediment by excavating a cavity and removing the pollutants down to clean native sand. ESi will then introduce new sand to create a filtering buffer and support structural integrity.

SUMMER It’s summer and you have been invited to a three-month-long party as your reward for living through another lousy winter. Here’s what to expect for the next 99 or so days: Incredibly fresh, sweet corn from that little farmstand on Sagg Main just south of Loaves & Fishes . . . Ice-cold beer, beefsteak tomatoes, clams, lobsters, a big, beautiful steak marinating in soy, garlic and ginger, fresh-cut flowers . . . Jimmy Buffett singing “Cheeseburger in Paradise” on your car radio. Jack Johnson singing about making “Banana Pancakes” . . . Margaritas . . . Eating at ESTIA’S in Sag Harbor, featuring the best breakfast in The Hamptons served by the nicest people whose smiles will light up your whole day. Lunch and dinner are great, too . . . Scoring a table at the LOBSTER ROLL in Amagansett. Home of the best lobster salad in the universe . . . The incredible sliced steak at BOBBY VAN’S in Bridgehampton. Charred on the outside, rare on the inside – it’s the best steak in the Hamptons . . . While you’re in Bridgehampton get thee to THE CANDY KITCHEN. It’s been the favorite breakfast place for the great and the near-great for years. Wonderful food and the best ice cream in New York state . . . Grab yourself a perfect hamburger at ROWDY HALL in East Hampton – nobody does it better . . . DAVE’S GRILL in Montauk is now called DAVE’S GONE FISHING at a new address: 467 East Lake Drive, Montauk. New name, new address, but with Dave cooking and his wife Julie out front, I guarantee it will be the best food and the best dining experience you will have on the East End this year . . . You can’t go wrong eating at THE EAST HAMPTON GRILL, THE PALM and NICK & TONI’S in East Hampton and DOCK SIDE AND BEACON in Sag Harbor . . . Follow the best chef in the Hamptons, Michael Rozzi, who is running the kitchen at THE 1770 HOUSE . . . Michael used to run my kitchen at Della Femina Restaurant and he’s a wonderful man who deserves his own show on The Food Network . . . Sag Harbor is hot with some great restaurants. My favorite for
Italian food (the delicious clams steamed in white wine bring tears of joy to my eyes) is CAPPELLETTI at 3284 Noyack Road in Sag Harbor. This is an unpretentious treasure. Modestly priced, it’s wonderful for families and kids. Luigi and Robin Tagliasacchi are the perfect hosts (he does the cooking) and, I swear, their made-on-the-spot cannoli is the best I’ve ever tasted. I had a cannoli there the other night that was so big it had a first class section and a coach section. Without a doubt, their wonderful cannoli puts Ferrara of Little Italy to shame . . . If you have a yen for great Japanese food then you have a yen for SEN, a Sag Harbor restaurant favorite . . . When you get yourself to Sag Harbor, go into tiny CAVANIOLA’S Gourmet Cheese Shop. It’s the best cheese selection in the Hamptons ... Here’s a new Italian restaurant that’s serving great food in a great room: MANNA in Water Mill. Make a reservation now. With Chef Marco Barrila turning out great dishes, Manna is going to be this summer’s “hot” restaurant . . . Browse for a great summer book at the new BOOKHAMPTON in East Hampton. This summer, it’s a must. It’s important for the new owners that everyone reading this column go to the new BookHampton to buy a book. Buy a book for your kids, too. For crying out loud, take that cellphone out of your ear and put some knowledge into your head. Read. We can’t afford to lose any more bookstores . . . Traffic jams around Exit 31 of the LIE that last for a weekend . . . Orange traffic cones wherever you drive . . . Margaritas . . . Little kids coming out of the surf so teeth-chattering cold that you want to hug the warmth back into them . . . Nasty hedge fund guys hopping off their own planes with a jaunty, arrogant strut. They have so, so much – why don’t they look happy? ... The worst of the hedge fund guys is a creep who has earned the title “the neighbor from hell” from those who live near him. Some day he will figure out that the size of his house won’t add anything to the size of

his penis . . . Being the token Republican at a dinner hosted by and surrounded by Democrats who are terrified of Trump and feeling so-so about Hillary. These are the same people who abandoned Hillary for Obama seven years ago. Have they had their fill of “hope and change?” They won’t admit that, even if you torture them. But at night when they’re alone in the dark and staring at the ceiling, will they admit to themselves they’re disappointed in Obama? Who knows? I find the only way to keep Democrats from fooling themselves is to say “Bill de Blasio, Bill de Blasio, Bill de Blasio” three times out loud. But I’m kidding myself. Want to have fun at a party? Ask a Democrat if they had to vote for Bill de Blasio or Donald Trump for president, who would they vote for? . . . Cut-off jeans and T-shirts with dumb inscriptions . . . Bike riders testing your driving skills and nerves on Further Lane . . . PSEG wimping out on the first real hot summer night. No one has done more for the candle business than PSEG . . . Dumb drunks who should know better, aiming two-ton cars at innocent people. We need more Saturday night inspection roadblocks in the Hamptons. We need police cutting drunk drivers’ licenses into little pieces right before their eyes . . . Three-charity, multi-party nights where the same 50 people jump from party to party. A conversation starts at one party and finishes two parties later. It doesn’t matter, nobody’s listening . . . Undressing at night, reaching into your pants pocket and yelping as a cocktail toothpick is embedded in your palm. Check your blazer pocket and you’ll find a half-dozen cocktail toothpicks and God knows how many cocktail napkins . . . Stretching out on a big soft chair in your backyard and finally finishing a book you started at the end of last summer . . . Enjoying a beach party on a moonlit beach while keeping a close eye on the little kids as they watch the marshmallow on the end of the branch they’re holding go into a raging bonfire and magically turn from a white little pillow into a brown caramelized treat . . . Margaritas . . . Runners clogging up the roadway with their “I’m healthy and you’re not” eyes . . . Adorable six-year-old kids (with profit-making skills genetically bred into them) selling lemonade on Lily Pond Lane at outrageously high prices . . . A late-night lightning storm that

produces a magnificent light show; PSEG blows again . . . Hurricanes that never materialize. Then one that comes too close . . . Margaritas . . . Sipping a drink and taking in a beautiful sunset . . . Feeling your tennis shirt starting to stick to your body while you warm up to play one early morning in August and wondering if the temperature is going to break 100 ... Margaritas . . . Bluefish, nutty as fruitcakes, following their prey right into shore, right to their doom. Overhead, gulls fly in lazy circles, taking it all in . . . Grown men hiding behind their sunglasses as they sneak lascivious looks at their children’s teenage nannies . . . Starring in your own romantic movie as you watch a full moon turn the ocean or the bay into a shimmering silver carpet . . . The East Hampton bees (smarter than the average bee) that stalk your cookouts and terrorize your kids all summer long . . . Basting your children with suntan lotion with the same care you give your Thanksgiving turkey ... Lost sunglasses, flippers, goggles, youth, bathing suits, nose clips, romance, boogie boards that you never seem to find again . . . Spinning around town in the Kafka-like “land of no left turns,” searching for a parking space that doesn’t exist. You’re always under the watchful eyes of the traffic Gestapo (sweet-faced young kids in brown uniforms who have the dream job of enforcing the law on their elders) . . . Falling into a 20-something hot new place in Montauk, feeling agechallenged and realizing for the first time in your life you don’t belong . . . The Artists and Writers Annual Softball Game, where for a few hours the players can live out their childhood dreams of being Mickey Mantle. Watching guys who 20 years ago used to huff, now puff as they round the bases . . . The Sunday night Land Rover/ Mercedes/BMW parade on 27 . . . Feeling disappointed and awed at the same time as you see the first beautiful Monarch butterfly of the year. They only seem to show up on the last week of August . . . Biting into the last hamburger you can possibly eat on the Monday night of Labor Day weekend and realizing that the potato trucks have started to roll and it’s all regretfully over . . . HAVE THE BEST SUMMER. If you wish to comment on “Jerry’s Ink” please send your message to jerry@ dfjp.com.

Purple Hearts And A Will Of Steel was unwilling to accept that the government no longer had a record of her uncle who had died for our freedom. What she was able to obtain from the archives were the unit records of her uncle’s Regiment, the 198th Antiaircraft Artillery. Written in typical military jargon, the records were, Hogan admitted, “hard to follow.” But they included the daily activities of the Battle of Luzon and specifically stated that Sgt. Corporal Salvatore Ciaburri By Kitty Merrill
As a child, Lisa Hogan wasn’t particularly interested in the events of World War II. Her father, Salvatore Ciaburri, fought with the 28th infantry division and was wounded during the Battle of the Bulge. But, like many veterans of his generation, he didn’t talk about it very much. About 10 years ago, Hogan, of Eastport, read a book about the 28th infantry, and it sparked an interest in learning more. Little did she know how very much more she would learn. She found out about a museum dedicated to American Purple Heart recipients located near New Windsor, New York, and decided to enroll her father in the National Purple Heart Hall of Honor Museum. The enrollment went off without a hitch. Next, Hogan tried to enroll her uncle, Mickey Ciaburri. He was killed in the Battle of Luzon in the Philippines in 1945. That enrollment was denied because Hogan didn’t have documentation to prove her uncle was awarded the medal. Un d e t e r r e d , H o g a n b e g a n to search for Uncle Mickey’s documents. Online searches led her to the National Archives in Washington, DC. Each question, she recalled, “took so long.” It could be months, waiting to hear back from the Archives and the War Department. The answers she received were disappointing. Eighty percent of the military records that were stored in a St. Louis warehouse were destroyed when a fire swept through the building in 1973. Uncle Mickey’s records were among them. Hogan

The parade of veterans, scouts, and town officials will head down Main Street, pausing at each memorial along the route, which includes the Civil War monument at the corner of Madison and Main Streets, the Municipal Building, where firefighters are honored, and the Lance Corporal Jordan C. Haerter Veterans Memorial Bridge. The parade continues to Marine Park, where services culminate at the village’s World War II, Vietnam and Korean War monuments. As is tradition, residents can gather at the American Legion Chelberg & Battle Post for refreshments and speeches afterward.

4. Will they get all necessary

Unforgettable!
Planning the perfect outdoor event can be a daunting proposition. There are so many details that it’s very easy to overlook something. So here’s a bit of advice: If you need to restrooms, reserve them as early as possible. During the spring and summer, especially, luxury rest room trailers tend to be booked up and you may not be able to get the kind of unit your guests deserve. And when you shop for toilets, make Norsic your first call. We have the most reliable service, the most choices and the best maintained fleet of luxury restroom trailers on the East End.

Caring For Our Veterans By Lee Zeldin
As a nation, supporting our veterans must always be one of our highest priorities. These brave men and women, who willingly and selflessly put their lives on the line while defending our country, deserve nothing but the highest quality of life and care once they return home. According to the Suffolk County Veterans Service Agency (VSA), there are 83,254 veterans who live here in Suffolk. With the highest population of veterans by county in New York State, and one of the highest in the entire country, there is a significant need for increased care options for our veterans in Suffolk County. There are so many options of quality care for veterans, but too often their choices are limited. Quality care can also come at a great expense. In an effort to expand access to care for our veterans, I recently introduced bipartisan legislation in Congress, H.R. 2460, which would ensure that 70 percent or more service connected disabled veterans are
able to receive Adult Day Health Care, a daily program for disabled veterans who need extra assistance and special attention in their day to day lives, at no cost to the veteran and their family by defining the program as a reimbursable treatment option through the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA). H.R. 2460 has strong bipartisan support in Congress, with over 45 cosponsors, including the entire Long Island Congressional Delegation. My bill would greatly expand this great option of care for veterans on Long Island and across the country. Just last month, on April 20, 2016, the House Veterans Affairs Committee hosted a hearing of the Subcommittee on Health regarding my bill, and on April 29, 2016, the Health Subcommittee held a markup and favorably forwarded my bill to the full committee for final consideration before being sent to the House floor for a vote. Working with my colleagues in the House, and various Veteran Service Organizations (VSOs), I will continue pushing to get this bill CONTINUED ON PAGE 27.

VA Suicide Hotline Fix Passes House
15
Congressman Lee Zeldin member of the House Veterans Affairs Committee, announced Thursday that his proposed legislative fix to a VA funding bill to ensure that veterans receive immediate assistance from a trained professional when they call the Veterans Crisis Line (VCL) passed the House of Representatives. Zeldin’s language was added to the Military Construction and Veterans Affairs and Related Agencies Appropriations Act of 2017 (H.R. 4974), which passed 295 to 129. Zeldin’s effort, was launched in March of 2016, following the release of a Department of Veterans Affairs Office of Inspector General report that found that calls to the Veterans Crisis Line operated by the VA in 2014 were transferred to a backup call center voicemail system and never returned. The proposed language reads as follows, “The Secretary of Veterans Affairs shall ensure that the toll-free suicide hotline . . . (1) provides to individuals who contact the hotline immediate assistance from a trained professional; and (2) adheres to all requirements of the American Association of Suicidology.” The American Association of Suicidology standards mandate that crisis center responders be available to answer a dedicated phone number 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Currently a loophole allows for calls to be transferred to a backup center, which are allowed to place callers on hold and utilize voicemail. Passage of this bill would close this loophole, requiring immediate assistance for any veteran who calls the VCL or a backup center. Congressman Zeldin said, “Each and every veteran who calls the suicide hotline should receive immediate support from a trained VA responder. The legislation that passed today, with my proposed language, clarifies that within the funding the VA will receive, a trained professional must be available to take an incoming call on the suicide hotline from a struggling veteran 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. There is absolutely no justifiable reason that a veteran who calls the suicide hotline should ever be sent to voicemail.”

Comedy Tour On Sunday at 5:30 PM, The Jewish Fathers Comedy Tour will visit Temple Adas Israel. The Jewish Fathers is a stand-up comedy show that takes a hilarious and insightful look at what it means to be a Jewish father in the 21st Century. Audience members will laugh aloud to a 90-minute show by comedians Alex Barnett and Adam Oliensis. Barnett describes himself as “the White, Jewish husband of a Black woman (who converted to Judaism) and the father of a 3-year old, Biracial son.” Given this reality, Alex focuses on the challenges of being a parent in a bad economy and the issues that confront interracial families. In his off hours, Alex spends as much time as he can with his wife and their son . . . and they pretend to enjoy his company. In his comedy, Adam Oliensis explores the lessons in humility he’s learned from his wife and especially from his four children, along with the adjustments being forced on him by genuine adulthood. Tickets are $20 at the door and the show is appropriate for teens and adults.

Thank you to all for making the Sixth Annual Katy’s Courage 5K such a wonderful success
To Our East End Friends,
Courage Is What We Give To Each Other
April 16, 2016
Do your little bit of good where you are; it’s those little bits of good put together that overwhelm the world. Desmond Tutu said this, and we believe it’s true. If you are fortunate enough to live or spend time on the East End, you know that our community seems to already live by this understanding. The annual Katy’s Courage 5K happens as the result of lots of generous folks doing good, and we thank you. This year marks our 6th race, and once again it was a wonderful success! There are so many people to thank that it would be impossible to name them all here, but a few we must mention are Mayor Schroeder, Dee Yardley,
Chief McGuire and the Sag Harbor Police, the Sag Harbor Fire Department, our Race Director, Nina Landi, and her husband John, and the many, many volunteers and local sponsors who make this special event possible. Our list of helpers is always so long! We will be able to support many East End families and children as a result of all the kindness. Thank you also to all the runners and walkers! The show of generosity at the race means so very much to us, and again, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts. Our very warmest wishes to all, Jim, Brigid, Robert and Christopher

Wodehouse is buried in Remsenburg just down the block from the house where he spent the last 20 years of his life. The inscription at the bottom of the headstone reads, “He gave joy to millions.”
English Icon Was Remsenburg’s Treasure
By Rick Murphy
P.G. Wodehouse was more than just a literary icon to the English - he was sometimes compared to Mark Twain, his novels, stories and essays infused with wit, insight and charm. In real life, though imbued with a unique panache, Wodehouse was a dedicated man of letters, one of the most prolific – and successful - writers of his time, a wordsmith
with few if any equals. His readers stretched across the world and his most famous creation, the man servant and valet Jeeves, achieved enduring fame, a treasured character who epitomized the can-do attitude and stiff upper crust demeanor Brits treasured – along with a rapscallion’s nose for mischief that was pure Wodehouse.

And though the author is still revered in the Old Country to this day – and his works still in demand - P.G. Wodehouse grew deep roots here on the East End. In fact, he fell in love with Remsenburg, moved there, and spent the last decades of his life in the tiny hamlet. Few people realized that Wodehouse actually became an American citizen and never
returned to England again after purchasing a house in Remsenburg and moving here full time in 1955. He died in Southampton Hospital in 1975; he is buried right down the road from his house at 21 Basket Neck Lane behind an old white church. Sir Pelham Granville Wodehouse was an immediate success as a CONTINUED ON B-7.

I have spent thousands in medically uncovered treatments including Ondamed bioenergetic t h e r a p y, i n f r a r e d s a u n a , acupuncture, Rifing, ozone, and raindrop therapy. Cancer patients get support – from their relatives, from their neighbors, from their doctors and technicians. There is so much empathy and care put into the treatment of cancer. That’s a great thing. They need it and in no way am I downplaying the seriousness of cancer and the level of support cancer patients need. However, Lyme patients get ignored. Many people just don’t have the facts or experience with tick- borne diseases. Obviously prevention is key, but the damage may already be done if a tick has attached. No, it doesn’t have to be attached for more than 24 hours to transmit disease. No, two Doxycycline pills will not prevent you from getting Lyme from a carrier bug. And no, a blood test doesn’t prove or disprove the presence of Lyme in your system Babesiosis and Bartonella come in many, many strains and one cannot test for every single one of them. If you test too early antibodies might not have had a chance to develop to show the presence of Lyme. The blood tests don’t matter.

What matters is a description of your symptoms and finding a doctor who can diagnose based on them. After eight months of treatment I now have learned to self-medicate – I have an arsenal of prescription and herbal remedies to take and many alternative therapies to pay for. But the “bugs” still come out every three to four weeks and wreak havoc on my system during every full moon. But I’m thrilled to be back at work and am looking forward to the day that I can start exercising again. I’ve changed. I feel shell shocked and damaged. I don’t walk on grass any longer. I won’t go hiking. I wear Permethrin soaked socks and pants when I watch my daughter playing outside. But I’m also more human: I have more empathy for others, I’m more spiritual and I’m no longer afraid to die. I hate to say that I’m a Lyme warrior. But I hope to one day call myself healed and a survivor.
Speonk Fatality An elderly couple driving on Speonk-Riverhead Road Thursday morning crashed into a street sweeper after being blinded by the dust it kicked up, killing one of them. At about 10:21 Grace Larsen, 72, was driving her 2008 Hyundai northbound with her husband Larry, 72, in the passenger seat when she smashed into the rear of the Southampton Town sweeper. Her husband was taken to Peconic Bay Medical Center where he succumbed to injuries he suffered in the crash. Another driver, coming up from behind the accident scene, was also blinded by the dust and crashed into the accident debris but escaped injury.

The victim, 30, had been involved in a dispute with her attackers earlier. Police said Cowell, driving a minivan, caught up with the alleged victim while she was riding a bicycle and repeatedly rammed into her until she fell, then Cowell used the bat to pummel her. The victim was taken to Peconic Bay Medical Center. Cowell was charged with two counts of Assault 2nd degree, Criminal Possession of a Weapon 3rd and 4th, and was also wanted on a warrant. Dear Reader, Welcome to the first BookHampton “Dear Reader”! As the new owner of BookHampton and a neighbor, I look forward to sharing with you news about the store and views about books that intrigue, amuse and inspire. We will, of course, also let you know when today's fascinating authors will be joining us for conversation. I have high hopes and dreams for the store. I’ve been a resident of East Hampton for almost 30 years and a customer of BookHampton throughout that time. I’ve always had a personal passion for bookstores and an abiding belief in the value they bring to a community. I love books, love libraries, and love being around books. But the real origin of my personal passion occurred when I was nine. At that young naïve age, I wanted to own a bookstore—indeed, I imagined my bookstore in a brick building on a main street of a small town (so far, so good) and I named it “Sunflower Truly” (much less good, and who knows where I came up with that name!). BookHampton has played a meaningful role in East Hampton for over 40 years. When I heard the news that the business was for sale, I—like so many others—was bereft and couldn’t imagine our village without a thriving bookstore. And with exquisite timing, Ann Patchett, an author and bookstore owner whom I greatly admire, wrote a yearend piece in The Wall Street Journal entitled, “Bookstores Are Back,” in which she described the current resurgence of bookstores. That was all I needed to make a run for BookHampton. My hope is to build on BookHampton’s legacy and ensure its vitality, bringing in a broad selection of both current and classic books (20,000 and counting). I am committed to providing a vibrant yearround environment with the potential for discovery, opportunities to meet and converse with a diverse range of authors, and backed up by knowledgeable booksellers dedicated to a high level of customer service. We’re off to a good start. I’m fortunate to be guided and assisted by Roxanne Coady, a longtime friend, and R. J. Julia Booksellers, Roxanne’s bookstore in Madison, Connecticut, which is one of the most successful bookstores in the country. Roxanne and I have wanted to work together for years and bringing her in is enabling us to get BookHampton firing on all cylinders very quickly. As Roxanne says, “We may make mistakes, but they won’t be rookie ones.”
You’ll see that the store has been completely re-designed thanks to the immensely talented firm Deborah Berke Partners. Deborah is another longtime East Hampton resident and the soon-to-be Dean of Yale School of Architecture. Her team has designed a warm, welcoming space that is modern and beautiful. It’s a community place for book lovers where books are the stars. The store is open, light-filled, functional and elegant. And a special nod to Phil Pape Construction for executing the project with speed and skill. Also new is the BookHampton logo. For this I am so grateful to Michael Bierut and his team at Pentagram Design. Michael is an old friend, another lover of books and bookstores, an author and one of the most esteemed graphic designers on the planet. Be sure to check out our tote bags, T-shirts and baseball caps (not to mention that dog bowl outside our doors) to see the clever “mark” that Pentagram designed for us. The events schedule is well-developed for the summer. We’re very excited to welcome Firooz Zahedi for his dazzling new memoir of Elizabeth Taylor; New York Times editor Gerry Marzorati who takes up semi-pro tennis at the age of 60 in Late to the Ball; accomplished authors Judith Stein and Jay McInerney for their new novels; debut author Moira Weigel for her new book on the history of dating in America; and a special book signing with Isaac Mizrahi and Maira Kallman, just to name a few. Please pick up a calendar in the store. The website BookHampton.com will soon be up and running and will have all the events scheduled and the ability to make reservations. BookHampton will re-open Memorial Day weekend with an Open House on Saturday, May 28th from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. The store will be filled with new books, folks to welcome you, and lots of good cheer. Please come and bring your friends and family! In closing, I’m now decades past nine years old and certainly no longer see the merit of naming a bookstore "Sunflower Truly," but I’m delighted to have realized my dream of owning a bookstore. I look forward to welcoming you to the store—to serving you, learning from you, and experiencing with you the joys of books and reading. See you in the store!
Carolyn Brody P.S. The more the merrier! Feel free to invite friends and neighbors to the open house on Saturday, May 28th from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.

Zeldin Bill Moves To Senate By Rick Murphy
Congressman Lee Zeldin, member of the Bipartisan Task
Force to Combat the Heroin Epidemic, announced that a bill he co-sponsored in the House of
Representatives, the Comprehensive Addiction and Recovery Act (CARA) (H.R. 953/S. 524), which previously

passed in the Senate, last week passed unanimously in the House Judiciary Committee, releasing the bill from committee and allowing the bill to move forward in the House. CARA would provide up to $80 million in funding to help prevent and treat addiction on a local level through community-based education, prevention, treatment and recovery programs. Funding would also be provided to supply communities with higher quantities of Narcan; a lifesaving medication that can reverse the effects of an opioid overdose within minutes. Additionally, the grants made available through this bill would also provide the funding necessary to expand prescription drug monitoring in states throughout our country. Congressman Zeldin said, “I am proud to support and cosponsor the Comprehensive Addiction and Recovery Act; bipartisan legislation aimed at increasing treatment and recovery services, and providing the proper education and resources at a local level. Having previously passed the Senate, and now with passage of this bill out of committee with unanimous bipartisan support, we are one step closer to this bill passing in the House and being signed into law.” “Every single day, 78 people lose their battle with addiction, and their life, as a result of an opioid or heroin overdose. Last year, on Long Island alone, 442 people died of a heroin or opiate overdose, up from 403 overdose deaths the year before,” Congressman Zeldin continued. “As addiction and overdose deaths continue to climb, tearing apart families and communities, it is essential that we immediately bring this bill to the House floor for a vote.” “The heroin epidemic has hit Suffolk County specifically hard. Working closely with our local community, I’ve been pursuing a more localized solution to address this crisis,” Zeldin said. “Hosting multiple drug task force round tables here in Suffolk, I’ve been able to bring together local elected officials, law enforcement, health professionals, community groups, parents, concerned residents and those in recovery, to discuss various ways that we can combat this epidemic.” Zeldin said, “Getting CARA passed and signed into law is a top priority of mine, and I will keep fighting until this essential piece of legislation passes the House and is signed into law by the President. CARA is an important step in the fight, but also only just part of what needs to be done on so many CONTINUED ON B-11.

writer, developing the Jeeves and Wooster characters why still in college. In episode after episode Wooster, the pampered upper crust bachelor, would inevitably find himself in a self-induced predicament often involving lady friends, his overly enthusiastic college buddies or his fondness for spending money excessively. Jeeves would inevitably and eagerly embrace (or in some cases create) some far-fetched scheme to make things right. Eventually a BBC series, “Jeeves & Wooster,” starring Hugh Laurie and Stephen Fry as Jeeves, became a huge hit and ran for three years, from 1990-93. It’s still being shown widely on cable. Wodehouse had many more characters, including those from the “Blandings Castle” tales, which were serialized in the Saturday Evening Post, which reportedly paid Wodehouse a huge amount of money to procure the rights. He wrote a series of Broadway musical comedies with Jerome Kern that were an important part of the development of the American musical in the 1920s. He began writing movies for Hollywood in 1930, working for MGM. Wodehouse’s standing as one of the world’s most successful comedy writers never suffered, but his popularity took a hit during World War

Nazi Occupation Wodehouse was living in France in 1940 when the Nazi occupation occurred. Like most able-bodied men, he was interned and housed at several locations, including a grim prison at one point. Eventually the Gestapo realized how important and popular Wodehouse was. He was duped into making five radio broadcasts dubbed “How to Be an Internee Without Previous Training,” which were basically light hearted takes on his predicament, an approach Wodehouse took to life in general. T h e y c a u s e d a f u r o r, a n d Wodehouse was branded as ProNazi in some quarters. He never quite got over the ignominy. Woodhouse always frequented New York City, but he began staying there more and more frequently with his wife, Ethel, after the war. In 1952, while visiting friends in Remsenburg, Ethel impulsively bought the house on Basket Neck Lane. Wodehouse loved to meander down the 10-acre property to Fish Creek. The house was set off from the road, behind a huge hedge, and he found the peacefulness inducing to writing. By 1954 he was smitten with life on the East End. “I am coming around to Ethel’s view that we ought to cut out New York and live here year round,” he wrote to a friend. “There seems very little point in having an apartment in New York . . . All one needs is books and I can get those here.” Meanwhile the couple was busy “acquiring quite the menagerie,” as Wodehouse put it. As was fitting for Brits of a proper standing, the Wodehouses were a bit aloof and class conscious.
Independent / Rick Murphy
Wodehouse never owned a car. He walked everywhere, including to and from the post office at least once every day, even when he was in his nineties.
“My sister and I were engaged to walk the dogs by his wife,” recalled Stephanie Davis. “They had a housekeeper we mostly dealt with – we were only allowed in the kitchen.” Davis recalled the property as “quite beautiful.” It has since been subdivided, and a new road cuts through a portion of it.
American Citizens In 1955 the Wodehouses gave up their Manhattan apartment and quietly filed for U.S. citizenship. Many people don’t realize that it was the Wodehouses who provided funding for the first animal shelter in these parts which is now known as Bidawee. Wodehouse loved his routine in Remsenburg. He walked to the post office at least once a day – he didn’t own a car. The nearest train station, in Speonk, was over a mile away, and Wodehouse would greet guests there and tell them his house was just around the bend. Wodehouse began each day doing his “Daily Dozen” exercises; his breakfast was invariably “black bread, jam, honey, and five cups of tea.” He would watch an afternoon soap opera, take the dogs (Boy and
Pepe) for long walks, go to the post office, and of course write. There were martinis before dinner and the couple played bridge with friends afterwards. “It’s the same routine every day but somehow it never gets monotonous,” he wrote. When he was 92 Aunts Aren’t Gentlemen was published; it turned out to be his last novel – A Portrait Of A Master was published earlier in the year. In 1975 “Wodehouse Theatre” became his third BBC series. He was knighted by Queen Elizabeth II along with Charlie Chaplin on January 1. He checked into Southampton Hospital in February of that year; it is said he brought with him piles of journals and books, along with an ample supply of pen and pencils, and continued to write vociferously. He died on February 14 at the age of 93. The funeral service was held at the Remsenburg Presbyterian Church up the block from his house and he was buried per his request alongside Ethel behind the church. His gravestone lists some of his most memorable works. “He gave joy to countless people” is engraved at the bottom.

LTV Report Cites Lack Of Financial Oversight By Rick Murphy
His name was never mentioned, but an audit of LTV, East Hampton’s public access television company, was ver y much about former Executive Director Seth Redlus. On May 17 Darin Iacobelli and Dimitris Bantileskas of Nawrocki Smith presented their findings to the East Hampton Town Board, which had already seen them in draft form earlier in the year. Many of the criticisms in the audit report were reported by The Independent beginning in 2011: that Redlus hired and paid family and friends, that he purchased items from his family using LTV funds, that he controlled the company credit card with little or no oversight and most egregious, ignored an East Hampton Town stipulation that purchases of items for $5000 and more be approved in advance by the town. The auditors, Nawrocki Smith, of Melville, also revealed they shared their findings with the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office; The Independent previously revealed representatives from the DA’s office questioned at least three individuals with ties to LTV, some extensively, including a former bookkeeper, Amy Salle. LTV Board president Jim Shelly denied the DA was conducting an investigation when asked about it last year. The auditors concluded Redlus, “did not adhere to purchasing
guidelines,” and that he was solely responsible for reviewing and approving expenses and preparing and signing checks with no checks and balances in place. Salle made those allegations publicly but they were dismissed by Shelly, who said Salle was responsible for much of the shoddy accounting practices found by the auditors to be in place at LTV. Shelly fired Salle in August of 2014 though he allegedly told board members she had quit. Redlus continued his practices of controlling virtually every aspect of the company’s finances after her departure according to the report. Shelly, the longtime treasurer of LTV, engineered a coup last year, ousting the board president, Robert Strada, and several board members loyal to him. Morgan Vaughan, who replaced Redlus and Shelly also spoke at the meeting. Vaughan said a lot of documents asked for by the auditors were missing because “the former bookkeeper did not do a very good job,” a sentiment echoed by Shelly previously. But Salle complained that Redlus acted as a lone wolf, at one point telling her “it’s none of your business” when she asked for receipts to reconcile expenditures. Vaughan wasn’t at LTV during Salle’s seven-year tenure there. LTV is funded almost entirely by public money, yet it runs as an autonomous entity with little oversight from the town least until
this year. LT V has been particularly generous to Redlus, whose salary almost doubled to over $90,000 over the years. He was frequently paid while working on jobs for his own company, sometimes missing weeks of work at LTV in the process. Redlus is still drawing checks from LTV though he now lives and works in Texas. Redlus was given a contract last summer paying him $3250 a month; the contract includes a defense and indemnification clause that provides a level of protection should Redlus be formally charged with any wrongdoing. Peter Israelson, a former LTV board member, suggested Shelly should either resign or be replaced. “Shelly was comptroller during this murky period . . . Somehow he stumbled upward to the board presidency. Why? Poor, even questionable financial judgment with no blame. How does this square?” Shelly served as LTV Treasurer for a decade and previously held the same position at the Bridgehampton Historical Society. LTV is currently embroiled in a lawsuit with the parent company of WVVH television Video Voice Inc., which is charging Redlus illegally, evicted them from a space in the LTV building that Video Voice had leased for 99 years. East Hampton Town is also a party in the litigation. Frazier Dougherty, the founder of LTV, has
vouched for the Video Voice version of events. Joe Bainton, a partner in the Bainton Law Group is representing Video Voice. “All of these shortfalls are in our complaint from 2011,” he said. “The town is our landlord. Court documents clearly establish we’ve got a right to be in that building,” Bainton said. “The town is increasing its liability to us.” The town owns the land under the building and has leased it to LTV for 99 years. Strada noted the auditors reported that Redlus was given five weeks of accrued benefits and vacation with no substantiation based on an agreement made with LTV last July. “So what happened to January through June of 2015?” Strada asked. East Hampton Town Supervisor Larr y Cantwell, after hearing from the auditors, told the LTV representatives he wanted all 19 recommendations from Nawrocki Smith to be implemented in a timely manner. “The truth is there has been a serious lack of internal control at LTV. Oversight has been woefully inadequate.” At one point Cantwell admonished Vaughan, saying, “this is not an adequate response” as she attempted to parry some of the audit’s criticism. Shelly closed the LTV portion of the meeting by stating, “There is no evidence of misappropriation of funds . . . I’m glad we resolved this.” “It hasn’t been resolved yet,” Cantwell replied. The DAs office did not respond to a question about whether it is conducting its own investigation or not. Cantwell said the town urged the auditors to share their findings with the DA. Peter Van Scoyoc, the town board’s liaison to LTV was not at the meeting. He has been criticized for not holding the LTV reins tighter. His son worked at LTV as an intern; Van Scoyoc first said he had not been paid, but acknowledged later that his son had received a small stipend at one point.

It’s actually going to happen in Indio, California, in late October if all goes well. It’s expected to draw hundreds of thousand of rock fans. I’ve always regretted missing Woodstock, so I intend to go to this party. LSD won’t be a problem at this event. Remember the guy with no teeth announcing, “don’t eat the brown acid” at Woodstock? time, given the average age of the expected attendees, they’ll be more concerned with overdosing on Doan’s Little Liver Pills. There will probably be a medical tent like there was at Woodstock, but the volunteers will be “talking down” old guys who overdosed on Viagra. Instead of tequila there will be shots of Geritol. Instead of T-shirts they’ll be selling plastic hips. The truth was I had a softball tournament to play in the weekend of Woodstock. It was one of the most defining moments of my life – the moment I had to choose between baseball and music. I remember it like it was yesterday. At first it was all systems go. I had visions of nubile Aquarian nymphets with long blonde hair and flowing paisley dresses. We started planning our trip: let’s see, we’d have to camp out: we loaded up a case of beer. It

might rain -- more beer. We’d need clothing, food, toiletries, etc. and more beer. “Chicks” – this was a politically correct way of referring to the female species of the human race then – would dig us because we had beer. “Mom, I need ten bucks I’m going to Woodstock.” “Oh, son, you don’t want to go there. The police are saying there’s a bunch of crazies taking drugs up there.” I’m thinking, “What’s not to like?” “Dad, I need ten bucks to go to Woodstock.” “Well, son, there will be a lot of sex up there. Do you have protection?” “Yes, Dad, I have beer.” Once when I was about 16 my father and I came out to Sag Harbor for the weekend without my Mom. He went down to Sal and Joe’s and I had a young lady in the house. Damned if he didn’t come home early. As my girlfriend hustled to get out, half naked, she ran directly into my father in the doorway. Nothing was said until the next morning when we were doing yard work, ostensibly the reason we had come out to our summerhouse in the first place. (The real reasons were 1. Sal and Joe’s Bar and Grill and 2. My easily pliable girlfriend.) Finally he turned to me. “You know, son,” he said, hitching his belt. “You shouldn’t have girls like that in the house.” “Why Dad?” I asked. “Well,” he said. “If they fall and hurt themselves they could sue us.” That made perfect sense to me. would be a virgin for the rest of my life to avoid a lawsuit. Three days of rain was forecast for Woodstock. So now I had the image of all these girls soaking wet! “Let’s do it,” I said to my friends. Leave it to our buddy Craig, who wasn’t into music as much as the rest of us, to point out a prior obligation. “Dude, we have a double-header Friday night.” Since everyone going on the trip was also on our team that meant we would forfeit two games and fall out of first place. Weeks later, everyone involved agreed Woodstock changed his or her life and was the single most important mind-altering event in the history of the world. Everyone who was there emerged incredibly cool. Everyone who missed it was a certifiable schmuck. So rather than face a lifetime of Schmuckhood somewhere along the line I started telling people I was at Woodstock. In fact, I was telling my buddy Bobby the other day about how good the music sounded. He looked at me quizzically before reminding me, “Murf, I was on your softball team.” Oh. Well, I almost went to Woodstock, and if I did I would have met a blonde Aquarius girl named Sunshine and we’d have three kids, Jimi, Sly, and Joni. And she would, to this day, have beautiful blonde flowing locks – under her arms. I’m gonna get me a tent and head to California come October. Maybe drive a VW bus. It’s either that or fly to California first class, rent the best hotel suite in Indio and arrange for some catering. Then I’m gonna get down with it and party like it’s 1969.

At 10:16 PM on Wednesday, the Sag Harbor Fire Department was dispatched for a report of a structure fire at 283 Ferry Road in North Haven. Arriving units reported a working fire in a garage section of a house, and Sag Harbor Chief Tom Gardella immediately called for mutual aid in the form of a RIT team from East Hampton and an additional engine from North Sea, and for apparatus from the Bridgehampton FD to stand by at Sag Harbor’s firehouse. Using an aggressive interior attack from inside the residence the fire was extinguished in short order without incident or injuries, and as a result major damage was limited to the garage area only. The Southampton Town Fire Marshal was requested to the scene to determine the fire’s cause and origin.

Indy Fit
By Kitty Merrill
Things are amping up on the East End, and our Indy Fit expert Kim Kenney’s got some words of wisdom for those toying with the idea of skipping workouts. You’re too busy. You’re tired. You’re watching the kids. You’re on vacation. I hear you and I know that you think skipping just one workout can’t hurt, right? You are wrong. Skipping just one workout can initiate a downward spiral, increasing your chances of skipping another one by 61 percent. So what are you to do? Move your

Continued from page 22. salt evaporating pans – to their salt making operation and is expected to increase production by 30 percent over last year’s level. Construction is expected to be complete and the new salterns evaporating seawater into salt by June 1. “We’ve significantly increased salt production every year since opening for business. Last year, we designed and built a dozen new salterns. To keep up with demand, we’re now putting another twelve salt pans in place,” said Steven Judelson, the Company’s saltmaker. With the new salt pans, the Company expects to produce and sell nearly four tons of culinary salt in 2016. Amagansett Sea Salt is hand cultivated, solar evaporated salt made from Atlantic Ocean seawater. Seawater is collected from the ocean in Amagansett, and tended at the Company’s saltworks. Salt crystals form in the salterns as the water slowly evaporates. The Company directly distributes its products to restaurants, artisanal food makers, retailers and consumers. Regular clients include Michelin starred and top rated restaurants throughout the Hamptons, the NYC metro area and the US. In addition to their signature 100 percent pure finishing salt, Amagansett Sea Salt Co. currently produces 12 naturally flavored and infused salt blends.

body anyway! If you are too tired at the end of the day, fuel your body in a smart way in the afternoon. Skip the sugary granola bar or the fruit snack and opt for an energy sustaining protein shake, like Shakeology, or a handful of nuts. It won’t spike your blood sugar and you won’t feel as tired at the end of the day. Better yet, carve a little time in the morning to get moving. Then it will be behind you and make you feel energized for the rest of the day.
You don’t have an hour to work out. Who says you need an hour? You don’t even need 30 minutes to improve your endurance and stamina. Ten minutes of high intensity interval training can do just that. You can do that at home . . . run up your stairway and walk down. Try doing that for 10 minutes -- it’s not so easy, but it is effective. Or go for a walk and incorporate short bursts of running every 30

Editorial
And So It Begins . . .
The annual dissing of The Hamptons by the New York dailies has begun. Every year, as the season begins, some reporter somewhere who doesn’t know us a-TALL, Bub, pitches a snide story about The Hamptons. If these carpetbaggers and their snarky annual predictions were to be believed, we were “over” about a decade ago. They keep predicting we’re over, and we just keep getting busier. The latest comes from Page Six, which “reports,” and we use the term loosely, the party could be over in Montauk. The gossip page snippet cuts and pastes an anonymous Wikipedia posting describing East Hampton Town officials as “fascists” who will not stop until all the bars and restaurants in the hamlets are converted to old folks’ homes. Must have been a slow news day. Earlier this month, Newsday found its way out east (Can News12 be far behind?) to report on the crackdown on Montauk clubs undertaken by Supervisor Larry Cantwell’s administration. For locals, the effort to rein in the bedlam is long overdue, and, for the most part, welcomed. However, Cantwell and company must take care to achieve balance. Like it or not, we live on our tourist economy, visitors are our artisan bread and GMO-free butter. Officials need to find ways to encourage tourism while discouraging the chaos that has marred summer evenings in Montauk. We don’t need to use sledgehammers to swat flies. Sweeping rules designed to address worst-case scenarios impact those who don’t break the rules, and need a second, thoughtful look. The town is currently holding community workshops to consider the future of East Hampton’s hamlets. We hope when the Montauk charrettes take place next fall, planners and community members conceive viable strategies to keep the party going and keep the peace. The current cookie-cutter approach to outdoor music is one aspect of zoning regs that needs another look. Strict rules for establishments in residential neighborhoods make sense. Those same rules applied to commercial areas like the Montauk Harbor dock area don’t. Who does a little reggae under the stars on the deck bother? The fish?

Dear Editor, Please share this with your readers. The red crepe paper poppy, replica of the Flanders Poppy, was officially adopted in 1921 as the Memorial Flower of the
American Legion and the American Legion Auxiliary. Through the years it has become the symbol of the dead - their memorial flower. The red crepe paper poppy is handmade exclusively by hospitalized veterans of the World Wars, Korean War, Vietnam War, Grenada/Lebanon and Panama conflicts, the Persian Gulf War, the Wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and the War on Terror. It is made of paper to give the veteran a maximum amount of therapy, work, and

Alex Gordon Jr. My dad was a Marine during the Korean War. He was at the Yucca Flats hydrogen bomb test. He said it was an incredible experience. But most of the men there died of cancer within 20 years, including him. He died at 42. They wanted to see how the men would react fighting in a nuclear war. Anne Hecht My uncle, Bernard Sperber served in the army during WWII in Europe. He drove for high ranking generals and other military higher-ups. He drove them all over, in a jeep. He was lucky and he got to come home from the war. May he rest in peace. Tyler Shaw My grandfather Joseph LaCarruba served during the occupation of Italy in WWII. His foot was crushed by a tank. Luckily, he survived and returned home, where he ran LaCarubba’s in Amagansett for many years. He and my grandmother, Patricia, were on The EMT squad for many years there.

Amagansett once was what your recent Society Annual Report Newsletter says it was, however, it’s unfortunate that those days of beauty, quiet, and iconic views are fading fast. With the apparent East Hampton Board approval of the affordable housing complex coupled with this unsightly PSEG Station, Amagansett is slipping away from what the teenager whom you quoted said was “something special that we should keep near and dear to our hearts.”

Dear Editor, As a long time resident of Amagansett I and my neighbors are becoming increasingly distressed at the electrical sub station on Old Stone Highway. Dear Mr. Murphy, As reported in your article “Life, Death and Taxes” (5/18), Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump made the following statement, “We are going to get rid of the estate taxes that are making farmers sell their farms. You have farmers that are wealthy but they are a little short of cash.” Mr. Trump’s statements echo comments recently made by Fred Thiele -- and to some degree made by Anna Throne-Holst -- that a state tax cap on farmland assessments has provided “much needed relief for our farmers.” Somehow I don’t think horse farmers like Matt Lauer or tree farmers like Madonna are short of cash or in need of much assistance. While serving in the New York State Senate, I secured the funding necessary to create the PFC Joseph P. Dwyer Veterans Peer Project, a peer-to-peer support program for veterans suffering from PostTraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI). PFC Joseph Dwyer, from Mount Sinai, New York, served in Iraq and received nationwide recognition for a photograph that went viral — showing him cradling a wounded Iraqi boy, while his unit was fighting its way up to the capital city of Baghdad. Sadly, after returning home and struggling with PTSD, PFC Dwyer died in 2008. Created in his honor, the Dwyer Program was initially launched in the counties of Suffolk, Jefferson, Saratoga and Rensselaer. Since 2013, the program has successfully expanded to over a dozen counties across New York. Earlier this year, I introduced bipartisan legislation in Congress, H.R. 4513, that will expand the Dwyer Program on a national level, so that every veteran in the U.S. eventually has access to a peer-topeer support group. This bill has strong bipartisan support, including the entire Long Island Congressional Delegation. I will continue working together with them in the fight to expand the Dwyer Program. Additionally, right here on the East End, working closely with Peconic Bay Medical Center (PBMC) and VA, I secured an East End health care facility for veterans and their families at PBMC’s Manorville campus. After so bravely serving our country, this facility provides an important new option for veterans, increasing access to care for

veterans who live on Long Island’s East End, while still allowing them to continue receiving other services and ongoing treatment at the VA Hospital in Northport. There is so much more that Congress can do to improve the quality of life for our veterans. I will continue working to ensure that my bills that previously passed the House are signed into law, including H.R. 1569 to protect the benefits of deceased veterans and H.R. 1187, which would eliminate the loan limit that the VA can guarantee for a veteran. Congress also must continue to reform the VA wherever it underserves a veteran. A series of recent USA Today articles reported that VA supervisors in multiple states instructed their employees to falsify patient wait times at VA facilities. This is a

slap in the face to all veterans and those responsible must be held responsible. Just last year, the House took a step forward by passing the VA Accountability Act of 2015 (H.R. 1994); legislation that I cosponsor that would make important reforms to the VA system, which will providing the necessary resources and flexibility the VA needs to hold poor performing employees accountable. While I believe that 99 percent of VA employees genuinely care about the work they do and want to help veterans, we must always ensure that the other one percent of those who are not acting in the best interest of veterans are held accountable. Our veterans deserve only the highest quality of care at our VA facilities. Fighting for our veterans who fought for us has always been one

Also, every day, my constituent services team works on cases to help Suffolk County residents. Traveler Watchman Chef Combines Cooking And Poetry Truth without fear since 1826
North Fork resident, restaurateur, chef, food columnist and cookbook author John C. Ross welcomes Summer 2016 with a new website and a calendar of upcoming events celebrating his newest release, The Poetry of Cooking. Released last fall, The Poetry of
Cooking, Ross’ third cookbook, is organized by seasonal availability rather than ingredients, adapting many of the recipes from “The North Fork Chef” column Ross has written for The Suffolk Times and Riverhead News Review for years. Divided into the 12 months of the
year, each section of the book begins with a food-related poem selected by Ross and is followed by what he describes as a prime meal indicative of the month. Other recipes follow, along with photos taken by Ross and other local photographers. Ross opens the May chapter with a poem entitled “The United States of Barbecue,” by Jake Adam York. The unofficial beginning of the summer season, Memorial Day weekend is a time when cooking operations inevitably move to a grill on the deck, in the backyard or at

the beach. The section highlights a number of grilled dishes, including: Grilled Veal Chops with Sage, Rosemary and Spring Vegetables; Argentine-Style Mixed Grill with Chimichurri Sauce and Grilled Tomatoes; Cedar-Planked Wild Salmon with Vegetable Bundles and Grilled Rack of Asparagus with Shrimp and Chunky Vinaigrette, among others. Wine notes accompany each recipe, along with pictures of the finished product. The layout is easy to follow, the ingredients are easy to find, the recipes don’t require an advanced cooking degree to carry out yet the results will have your family and guests thinking you have one. Following a few appearances last fall when the book was first launched, Ross has booked his summer calendar with a number of events that will combine cooking demos, tastings, book talk and signings. The Westhampton Beach Library in Westhampton, NY enjoyed Ross’ initial appearance so much that they invited him back for a guest appearance in August as part of their Monthly Cookbook Club. Other events will be through other local libraries, retailers and Foodie Tours throughout the summer season. Ross has been a professional chef since 1965. He was the chef/owner of Ross’ North Fork Restaurant in Southold for 27 years, and a pioneer in what is now called the ‘farm-totable’ movement. He is the author of two previous books, The Food and Wine of the North Fork (2005), and The Story of North Fork Wine (2009). As a restaurant, chef, educator, manager, home cook and writer, Ross has enjoyed the local bounty of the North Fork of Long Island for many years. He and his wife, Lois, live in Southold. To keep fans apprised of his upcoming events, Ross created a website and Facebook page. Here fans may learn more about the chef, his upcoming events, previous titles, local retailers carrying his books, as well as testimonials from fans, contact information and more.

On Saturday afternoon, the Baldwin Family Lecture Room at the East Hampton Library became a small concert hall, as guests gathered to hear all about the world’s most popular instrument . . . the harmonica. Authors, performers, and harmonica historians Kim Field (who has shared the stage with Muddy Waters, Stevie Ray Vaughan, James Cotton and others) and Randy Weinstein (co-author of the definitive The Complete Idiot’s Guide to Playing the Harmonica) shared harmonica factual history and performed live music. The event was the latest in the Library’s Tom Twomey Series, and was hosted by its Chairperson Brooke Kroeger.

A ribbon-cutting ceremony for the junior sports field at the Eleanor Whitmore Early Childhood Center was held earlier this month. It was the culmination of a years-long fundraising effort. Of note were the efforts of Dennis Ruiz. Now at John Marshall Elementary School, Dennis was an EWECC student and with his mother raised more than $430 for the sports field by collecting bottles and cans. The ribboncutting celebration featured games for the students and a chance to play on the new field.

In the final analysis Carl Johnson just couldn’t say goodbye. After saying he was “95 percent certain” he would step down after last season’s loss in the State Regional semifinals Johnson has had a change of heart. “I went on vacation and I thought about it. I’m making if official: one more season and then I’m gone,” Johnson said. It was important “to keep the program going strong,” he added. Johnson’s legacy is cemented in history. He has won four state championships as a coach, and earned three more as a player. No one else has ever come close to duplicating his accomplishments. Johnson’s run as a player from 1978-80 made him a hot commodity among college recruiters – until a hunting accident damaged his hand. He attended Utica, though he had offers from many Division I schools. “I pretty much had my pick of schools but a lot backed away after

I hurt my hand.” Johnson went to Utica for two years, then transferred to Southampton College and played three years there. He was asked to coach the Bridgehampton junior high team, though he had no coaching experience. It proved a fortuitous turn of events – the young players on his first team went on to become the core of his first three varsity championship teams. That was 25 years ago. Though Johnson lost four of his starting five – players he was particularly close to – the competitive juices are beginning to flow anew. “We’ve got four kids who can play, and Shelter Island lost their key players.” That would give the Bees a leg up on a County Class D title and a berth in the state tournament. “The team that beat us in the tournament lost three starters . . .” Johnson does not lack for opportunities should he indeed retire after the coming season. “I just got back from Jamaica. They have no basketball programs down there. I told them if they build me a couple courts I will go down and teach basketball.” Johnson has also discussed rekindling the Bridgehampton jayvee and junior programs. “I still want to teach basketball.”

Shapiro Hopes To Take Helm At Alma Mater
Shapiro playing for Bonac. By Rick Murphy
If it’s coaching credentials they want, the committee charged with recommending a new varsity basketball coach at East Hampton High School need look no further than Jesse Shapiro. Bill McKee stepped down last month after six years, following the footsteps of his mentor, Ed
Petrie who was at the helm of the Bonackers for 28 seasons prior. Shapiro has been coaching at various levels since 1997, mostly in New York City, but his local roots are strong. Born and raised in East Hampton, Shapiro played for Petrie for four years. “Coach Petrie was like a father to me,” Shapiro said. “I didn’t have a father growing up. He would pick me up and drive me home.” Shapiro learned more than basketball from the legendary coach – he learned about life. “This is about giving back to the community and rebuilding the program from the ground up. It starts with the little kids.” Shapiro has extensive coaching experience at all levels. He is a coFounder of FastBreak Kids and grew it from a fledging program in 2005 to the biggest basketball program for kids in the metro area. He also co-founder of Rens Basketball and the the founder and CEBO of the Metro Mavericks, an AAU team he coached in 2011. He’s currently assistant varsity basketball coach at the Dwight School, an independent school that has won state titles the last
two years. “I’ve coached some of the best players in the city,” Shapiro said, noting his emphasis is on improving their academics and getting them into college. The idea of coming back to East Hampton to coach excites him. “This is not a one-year type situation.” Shapiro said he would follow the blueprint Petrie developed. “Coach Petrie had a following. Kids would go to the rec league because he would be there watching. Kids knew he noticed them.” Shapiro played point guard for Petrie from 1996 through 2000 and was good enough to make the All-County team. He also starred in football, earning All-County honors as a running back. He played for Richie Wrase at Suffolk County Community College and the team won over 50 straight games and won two national titles. Another former Bonacker, Marcus Edwards, has reportedly thrown his hat in the ring for the coaching position as well. Shapiro is hoping to get the

nod. “There is nothing better than coming home,” he said. “I am 100 percent prepared - I’ve been running AAU programs all year.” As for the team, most of the key players have graduated, but not the point guard, Jack Reese. “He’s the kind of player you can build a team around. If you have a ‘one’ (point guard) it’s a good start.”

Purple Heart

Continued from page 7. Ciaburri was killed on May 24, 1945, due to enemy fire. “I submitted those documents and hit another wall,” Hogan said this week. The unit record proved Uncle Mickey died, but they didn’t prove he’d received a Purple Heart. Next up, more bad news. Hogan put in for a replacement Purple Heart and was denied. Officials didn’t recognize a niece as next of kin, even though Hogan was the closest surviving relative. She explained the relationship, but, she recalled, “They wouldn’t budge.” Neither would Hogan. She decided to contact her local congressman. Initially, she contacted then-Congressman Tim Bishop. “I wasn’t able to get answers or solutions.” A month after Bishop’s successor, Congressman Lee Zeldin, took office, Hogan was on the phone. “I was not going to give up on this because my uncle gave his life for his country and his country

had no record of him. That was so wrong and if it took my entire life, I was going to right this wrong,” she said. “I’m living as a free person because of his sacrifice, it’s the least I can do.” It took five years, but on Veteran’s Day 2015, Congressman Zeldin awarded her uncle’s Purple Heart. Finally, the War Department had a full record of Uncle Mickey’s sacrifice. With all the necessary paperwork at hand, Hogan submitted the documents to the Museum and finally got her uncle enrolled. “Long after I’m gone, my father and uncle will be remembered for their part in saving the world,” she said. She would also like to remember another brother who served in the Pacific. “My Uncle Guy was a Sergeant with the 773rd Amphibian Tractor Battalion and although he didn’t receive a Purple Heart, he did receive a Presidential Unit Citation for his actions during the Battle of Saipan. I am proud of all of them,” she said. Hogan has reason to be proud of herself, too. The quest for

recognition for her father and uncle spurred a passion for learning about WWII and sharing what she learned. “Once I gathered all this information,” she said. ”I decided to write a book for his grandchildren.” Hogan published the book herself, just as a private family memento to give to the younger generation. Then, “the book took on a life of its own.” Cousins wanted copies,

A Message from Hampton Septic Services When it comes to Septic Systems most homeowners take the “Out of Sight Out of Mind” approach. If you don’t see it, you don’t have any nasty odors and septic backing up then why have it serviced? This way of thinking can cost you a lot of time and even more money! At Hamptons Septic Services OUR approach is to be Proactive rather than Reactive. More often than not, new customers contact us because their Septic System is failing at which point it becomes very difficult to control. Signs that your Septic System is failing can come in the form of simultaneously slow drainage and/or water backing up in tubs, sinks, toilets, washing machines, unusual gurgling sounds when running water, increasingly unpleasant odors in and around the house, discoloring and softening of your lawn, and depressions in the soil around the system. The good news is YES, IT IS POSSIBLE to prevent septic back-ups! Our customers receive recommended routine maintenance pumping which allows proper functionality of their septic systems preventing the unknown.
understandIng your sePtIc system: The components of modern septic systems are a house sewer drain, a septic tank, a cesspool, and the soil absorption field.
Some older homes have only a cesspool ring acting as the primary Septic Tank which then leaches directly to the soil. When you run water or flush a toilet the discharge from the drain is first collected by the Septic Tank. The Septic Tank is designed to separate waste, solids sink to the bottom forming the sludge layer and the lighter solids such as grease rise to the surface forming the scum layer. Between the solid and scum layers is the waste water layer which will eventually drain to the Cesspool where it then slowly leaches out into the ground to be biologically treated by the soil. common sePtIc system Issues: After the Septic Tank separates waste, the solids that remain in the tank are meant to break down over time, but often the rate of solid accumulation exceeds the rate of the breakdown causing the solids to overflow to the cesspool and ground, eventually causing backup of septic in the yard or house. Frequent removal and pumping of the solids in the Septic Tank will prevent system back-ups. Other reasons for poor drainage of your system could be frequent rainfall, or close proximity to beaches and oceans where the water tables are higher. In this case your system capacity may need to be increased by adding additional Cesspools.

the more you know...the more you save how often should I PumP my sePtIc tank: There are many variables which will determine how often you should have your system pumped. The New York State Department of Health recommends having your system, pumped out every two to three years. If you have a garbage disposal, live close to a body of water, have a smaller or older septic system then you may want to have it pumped more frequently. I have no Idea where to fInd my sePtIc tank, can you locate It? Yes! We can locate your septic system using many techniques. We recommend locating your system prior to needing it serviced. If you wait to locate your system in an emergency it can become very messy and costly. what should not go Into the sePtIc system? Septic systems are designed to treat domestic waste water produced from routine activities such as bathing, toilets, dishwashers and washing machines. Do not drain or flush harsh chemicals, paint, solvents, paint cleaners and degreasers, and pesticides. Refrain from disposing of latex products, feminine hygiene products, baby or personal wipes and any other dense waste.
