Studying Mysterious And Majestic Sharks By Kitty Merrill

They’re not the voracious maneaters sensationalized “events” like Shark Week make them out to be. “People have nothing to be afraid of,” said Greg Metzger, “I hate Shark Week, all it does is instill fear . . . There are lots of sharks on Long Island, have you ever heard of a shark attack? It’s not because we don’t have them. Sharks here are not a threat to people. They’re not interested in eating people or biting people or interacting with people at all.” Contrary to its bad rep, “The shark is a very shy animal. It’s inquisitive and it’s definitely not out to eat you. It’s an amazing, majestic animal that’s just trying to survive, said Metzger, who’s been studying the mysterious fish for 13 years. A marine science teacher at Southampton High School, marine biologist, and shark researcher, Metzger is part of a collaboration of scientists undertaking a groundbreaking study of sharks, particularly white sharks and thresher sharks.

In fact, he and his team are the first ever to put a satellite tag on a “young of the year” white shark they caught five miles south of the Shinnecock Inlet last year. (Young of the year means less than a year old.) “Virtually nothing is known about juvenile white sharks,” Metzger informed, “and almost nothing is known about threshers. Those two species are of interest to the team.” Metzger grew up fishing in fresh water in western New York. He came downstate in 1995 to attend LIU Southampton and pursue a degree in marine science. “I’m a diehard fisherman,“ he said. “And when you’re salt water fishing, the fish to catch is the shark.” At the same time, the selfdescribed “geeky marine scientist,” knew there wasn’t a lot of data about sharks. “Not a lot was known and we had an opportunity to contribute with each fish we caught,” he said. In 2012, he and writer and photographer Chris Paparo began to think about bringing researchers together after a day spent catching

and tagging sharks 15 miles off the Shinnecock Inlet. Two years later, Metzger was notified that a mako shark they’d tagged had been caught by a commercial fishermen off the coast of Africa, 2200 miles from where the locals had captured the creature. The recapture was the catalyst for the formation of the Long Island Shark Collaboration, Paparo, who is the manager of Stony Brook Southampton’s marine station, writes in this month’s edition of On the Water magazine. LISC’s goal is described as improving knowledge of sharks – their distribution, species variety, and population in New York’s coastal waters. The researchers had their first field season last summer, capturing, tagging, and releasing 51 sharks between May and August. At SHS, Metzger supervises a

four-year science research class. One participant in the program, David Nichols, focuses on sharks. He was a guest on a charter trip as an eighth grader and was “super excited” about the trip, and the prospect of beginning the long term research project once he got to high school, Metzger recalled. Told he could tag and study sharks as his research project, “He flipped out,” Metzger related. Nichols is most interested in studying the elusive white shark. “They’re the needle in the haystack,” Metzger informed. So far this summer there have been only a handful of confirmed catches between the Jones Beach and Shinnecock Inlets. Metzer relies on social media and phone calls from “a growing network of people” for information about where white CONTINUED ON PAGE 26.

A WALK ON THE (YUCK) BEACH

I went for my annual walk on the beach yesterday instead of writing my column. So, here’s an updated reprint from 2003 when I wrote about how much I hated walking on the beach.

So, I took my annual beach walk the other day. To be truthful I only walked about 100 feet and then gave up. But let me say that even with that limited experience, I can once again safely proclaim that this walking on the beach stuff is as overrated as ever. In my short time walking, I got an incredibly accurate picture of those people who beach walk. If they walk alone, fast, with their fists up on their chest staring straight ahead like zombies, they mistakenly believe that this is exercise and they are walking away from death. Get this! They’re walking in soft sand with a 102-degree sun unmercifully beating down on their heads, their hearts are beating so fast that they are threatening to pop out of their mouths, and they’re sweating like Debbie Wasserman Schultz would when she finds her next JDate turns out to be Bernie Sanders. Another thing I can’t understand

about beach walkers is why they’re so damn friendly. They’re always smiling! People who have lived in the same apartment building in Manhattan for 25 years and haven’t so much as nodded at their next door neighbors even once are walking on the beach with these goofy smiles on their faces saying, “Hi! How are you? Great day, isn’t it?” to perfect strangers upon whom they will never set eyes again. It’s like they think we’re all part of this big, happy, stupid family walking on the beach. Everyone looks real silly because there is not one single part of the beach that is level, so everybody has at least one foot sunk in the sand and is puffing and limping and looking like contestants in the handicapped midget portion of the Special Olympics. (Is that last sentence politically incorrect enough for you?) Don’t you find it amazing that no one in history ever took a walk on the beach and kept it a secret? My wife, the beautiful Judy Licht, suggests every day that I join her on her beach walk. I smile and say “Er ... er ... no, not today.” But what I’m thinking is, “I would rather

REAL ESTATE

ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT

stick pins in my eyes than walk on the beach.” People think walking on soft sand is some sort of badge of honor. The first thing they say to anyone who will listen when they come back is, “I just took the nicest walk on the beach.” At night when they go to a dinner party, Ethel will start the conversation with, “When Charles and I were walking on the beach today, he said ...” Or Charles will say, “There we were, taking a nice walk on the beach, when Ethel accidentally stepped on and crushed a piping plover. What a mess, getting the plover guts cleaned off from between Ethel’s chubby toes. But it was so, so pleasurable to take that walk.” If it’s so pleasurable, why don’t they keep it to themselves? Sex is a million times more pleasurable than a friggin’ walk on the friggin’ beach but you don’t find Ethel starting a sentence at a cocktail party with the words, “When Charles and I were having quickie this afternoon, he said . . . ” No, no one talks that way about sex anymore except on paid cable (especially Showtime) television. Couples walk on the beach each with a different idea in mind. She’s talking about a new avocado dressing that she wants to try at lunch. He’s mentally undressing his new assistant Velma. Guys rarely talk to each other when they walk on the beach. They stare at women and try to suck in their stomachs and imagine that their tans make them look like

Greek gods. Women, on the other hand, love to walk on the beach with each other. They walk in twos and one talks and the other listens. I imagine that the conversation is about the men in their lives. I imagine there has never been a beach walk in the history of beach walking where both women were happy with their lives. What you get is one woman who has just broken up or is contemplating breaking up with her boyfriend or husband and is miserable. She is the one walking closest to the beach side. The other one, walking on the ocean side, is talking to her, listening and steering her to keep her from walking out over her head into the ocean and ending it all. It is a sad commentary on life that by the next beach walk, the woman who is miserable one week will have met Mr. Right and the woman who was happy the week before will be pouring out her troubles. When my beach walk was over, I couldn’t help but think about the days when I prowled the beach at Coney Island. I was 16 years old with long blond hair and a killer pompadour — a Greek God. I would walk from Bay 10, which was the “Italian” beach, for about two miles to Bay 4, which was the “Jewish” beach. I walked because the word was, “The Jewish girls are easy.” On my way, I hardly noticed all the 16-yearold Jewish boys walking past me to Bay 10. Why? Because they had heard, “The Italian girls are easy.” We were both wrong. No one was easy. I’ve hated beach walks ever since. Schumer: Give Sunscreen Labels The Third Degree Just in time for 90-degree days and sunburn season, U.S. Senator Charles Schumer shares a new report that suggests 43 percent of sunscreens fail to meet the SPF level of protection listed on the bottle, plus “Shocking Results Found Some Children’s Sunscreen Products Only Offered SPF 8 Even Though The Label Claimed SPF 50.” A c c o r d i n g t o t h e s e n a t o r, manufacturers are required to test their own products for SPF levels but tests are rarely confirmed or re-tested by the Food and Drug Administration. He believes the SPF discrepancies require feds to step in and ensure the SPF number claimed delivers the protection promised. F u r t h e r, S e n a t o r S c h u m e r called on the FDA to launch an investigation into deceptive Sun Protection Factor (SPF) marketing following the study, which was released by Consumer Reports. “There is simply no doubt about it — some consumers are being totally burned when they buy sunscreen, which is why the FDA must give sunscreen labels the third degree,” he said in a release last Thursday. “With beach season officially in full swing and with a New York City heat wave on the way, the FDA needs to make sure the SPF labels on sunscreen products match the SPF protection being offered . . . Beachgoers and vacationers deserve the peace of mind of knowing that the sunscreen they’re using is offering legitimate protection against the sun’s harmful rays.” While the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) recommends using a sunscreen with a SPF of 30 or higher, the recently released study suggests that some consumers are not being offered the level of protection they believe they are using. For instance, of the sunscreen products tested by Consumer Reports, at least two products with SPF 50 labels only offered an SPF 8 level of protection — far less protection than the AAD recommends. The FDA does not consistently test sunscreen products but rather requires manufacturers test their own products for SPF levels. In light of this report, Schumer believes the FDA should move forward with a full-on investigation into SPF claims on popular sunscreen products and crack down on deceptive companies. According the study, 28 out of 60 sunscreen lotions, sprays, and sticks with SPF labels of 30

or higher actually offered less protection than what was listed on the bottle. Moreover, three of the tested products offered SPF levels of less than 15. Fo r f o u r y e a r s , C o n s u m e r Reports has tested SPF claims. Of products that were listed as SPF 30-39, 65 percent of chemical and mineral sunscreens tested higher than SPF 30. Of products that were listed as SPF 40-110, 70 percent of chemical and mineral sunscreens tested higher than SPF 30. According to the FDA, SPF is a measure of how much solar energy (UV radiation) is required to produce sunburn on protected skin (i.e., in the presence of CONTINUED ON PAGE 25.

A Message from Hampton Septic Services When it comes to Septic Systems most homeowners take the “Out of Sight Out of Mind” approach. If you don’t see it, you don’t have any nasty odors and septic backing up then why have it serviced? This way of thinking can cost you a lot of time and even more money! At Hamptons Septic Services OUR approach is to be Proactive rather than Reactive. More often than not, new customers contact us because their Septic System is failing at which point it becomes very difficult to control. Signs that your Septic System is failing can come in the form of simultaneously slow drainage and/or water backing up in tubs, sinks, toilets, washing machines, unusual gurgling sounds when running water, increasingly unpleasant odors in and around the house, discoloring and softening of your lawn, and depressions in the soil around the system. The good news is YES, IT IS POSSIBLE to prevent septic back-ups! Our customers receive recommended routine maintenance pumping which allows proper functionality of their septic systems preventing the unknown.

understandIng your sePtIc system: The components of modern septic systems are a house sewer drain, a septic tank, a cesspool, and the soil absorption field.

Some older homes have only a cesspool ring acting as the primary Septic Tank which then leaches directly to the soil. When you run water or flush a toilet the discharge from the drain is first collected by the Septic Tank. The Septic Tank is designed to separate waste, solids sink to the bottom forming the sludge layer and the lighter solids such as grease rise to the surface forming the scum layer. Between the solid and scum layers is the waste water layer which will eventually drain to the Cesspool where it then slowly leaches out into the ground to be biologically treated by the soil. common sePtIc system Issues: After the Septic Tank separates waste, the solids that remain in the tank are meant to break down over time, but often the rate of solid accumulation exceeds the rate of the breakdown causing the solids to overflow to the cesspool and ground, eventually causing backup of septic in the yard or house. Frequent removal and pumping of the solids in the Septic Tank will prevent system back-ups. Other reasons for poor drainage of your system could be frequent rainfall, or close proximity to beaches and oceans where the water tables are higher. In this case your system capacity may need to be increased by adding additional Cesspools.

the more you know...the more you save how often should I PumP my sePtIc tank: There are many variables which will determine how often you should have your system pumped. The New York State Department of Health recommends having your system, pumped out every two to three years. If you have a garbage disposal, live close to a body of water, have a smaller or older septic system then you may want to have it pumped more frequently. I have no Idea where to fInd my sePtIc tank, can you locate It? Yes! We can locate your septic system using many techniques. We recommend locating your system prior to needing it serviced. If you wait to locate your system in an emergency it can become very messy and costly. what should not go Into the sePtIc system? Septic systems are designed to treat domestic waste water produced from routine activities such as bathing, toilets, dishwashers and washing machines. Do not drain or flush harsh chemicals, paint, solvents, paint cleaners and degreasers, and pesticides. Refrain from disposing of latex products, feminine hygiene products, baby or personal wipes and any other dense waste.

Restorative Yoga: Keep Breathing all weekend, then taking classes during the week, too. “I was in the best shape I’d ever been in,” he remembered. The bonus? The training gave him the confidence to begin teaching classes himself. “I knew I could put together a class that combines stretching, breathing, and balance.” Johnson’s class at the Y does just that. The premise of “restorative” yoga is relaxing into poses and letting gravity do the work.

While the class warm-up is no joke for a beginner, as the class progresses, Johnson takes students through a basic and easy to follow routine. He offers enough instruction to ensure even newcomers know what to do while avoiding unnecessary chatter. Since he began teaching at the RECenter, Johnson’s observed myriad improvements in students who’ve been with him since Restorative Yoga’s inception. “I’ve

Jayne Klein has been a loyal acolyte since Johnson’s first class, too. She’d never tried yoga before and said the stretching, and how well it compliments her Pilates practice are what got her hooked. You go to a class for the first time and within minutes you’re sweating, you’re shaking, and you’re looking at the clock in disbelief: only five minutes have elapsed. Then comes the kicker, as the instructor says, “That was a nice warm-up.” “Warm-up?” you think. “If that’s the warm-up, what’s the full-on class going to be? I’m a goner!” Yep. That happened to me at the YMCA RECenter in East Hampton last Friday. But as Eric Johnson’s Restorative Yoga class progressed, calm descended and strain dissipated and the next time I looked at the clock, I was surprised to see an hour had gone by. Johnson and his wife Bridget LeRoy dabbled in yoga decades ago during her pregnancy, even being photographed for a book titled I Can’t Believe It’s Yoga. But it wasn’t until a car crash resulted in a neck injury that Johnson, at 47, truly embraced yoga as a means to restore health and fitness. The doctor said he could address the injury by grinding down the spine. That would alleviate the pain for a little while, Johnson explained. The pain would return, necessitating more grinding. “I said, ‘No . . . No . . . No,” the instructor recalled. His next stop was an osteopath who showed him stretching exercises that Johnson remembered looked a lot like the classic “Salutation to the Sun” yoga pose. He embarked on an intensive yoga teacher training program for four months, immersing himself

Lemonade, Only Better Don’t you think it’s time to ask about Air Conditioning?

When is a lemonade stand a chance for kids to help Fido and Mitzy? When it’s a Lemonarf Stand, of course. This week the Animal Rescue Fund of the Hamptons announced the return of the Lemonarf Stand, A Club for Kids. In an effort to engage kids to become philanthropic, ARF has an official club designed to involve kids in raising funds for the animals at the ARF Adoption Center. A Lemonarf Stand is just like a regular lemonade stand, only better. ARF has created a free starter kit that helps let people know young participants are an important part of the ARF team, and that all of the money raised will go directly to the care of the animals at ARF. Last summer, the Club for Kids raised over $6000 for ARF’s animals. The free starter kit includes a suggested lemonade and cookie recipe, posters, minibank, cups, and Lemonarf buttons. The most important part of any Lemonarf Stand is that the children have fun! Kids can feel free to add items for sale such as homemade jewelry or art and set their own prices for the items for sale. Based in Wainscott, the Animal Rescue Fund of the Hamptons actively rescues cats and dogs, provides quality care, and offers sanctuary until loving homes can be found. Founded in 1974, ARF is the leading animal adoption center on the East End. For more information, please visit www.arfhamptons.org

Though Sales Lag, The Luxury Market Makes Headlines Unique properties in The Hamptons, like East Hampton Point, continue to demand top dollars.

those plans went awry on Friday. Police said they witnessed the distribution of what later proved to be heroin. Dowling took off in his 2014 Mazda, heading north on Route 114 at speeds at times exceeding 100 miles per hour after cops attempted to pull him over. Sag Harbor cops joined in the pursuit and at one point almost crashed into Dowling, who had reversed direction. After finally coming to a stop on Swamp Road,

Dowling took off on foot but police eventually caught up to him. Meanwhile, police said they found a cache of drugs in the Mazda and also on his person, including glass packets of heroin and cocaine, plus a scale and smaller empty glassine packets typically used by a drug dealer. There was also a jar of marijuana and a spring-loaded knife. Dowling was charged with two felony counts of Possession of a Controlled Substance With Intent To Sell as well as five misdemeanors and a slew of traffic violations. Dowling was able to post $2500 bail after his arraignment.

Drug Task Force Busts Two Drug Rings

By Rick Murphy

Agents from the East End Drug Task Force busted a major cocaine ring and a heroin distribution ring, both of which operated on the East End, last week. Joined by law enforcement officials affiliated with the East End Drug Task Force at a press conference July 19, Suffolk County District Attorney Thomas Spota displayed the fruit of the investigation: drugs, weapons, paraphernalia and cash. To date 14 people have been arrested and arraigned including three members of the Bloods street gang. More arrests are expected, Spota said. Approximately six kilos of cocaine and heroin were seized during the execution of more than a dozen search warrants over the days leading up to the announcement. Spota said the investigation began when patrol officers from East End police departments saw a significant upward trend in the seizure of both heroin and cocaine

last fall. The EEDTF began to trace the activities of dealers to find the root – where the drugs were coming from. The task force soon developed information which led them to focus on a cocaine operation in Riverhead and Southampton allegedly being supplied principally by Corey Woodley, 36, of Flanders and Eric Thomas, AKA “E”, 42, of Riverhead. Thomas, described by the District Attorney as a “significant reseller” for the cocaine distribution network, was on parole at the time of his arrest July 14 when task force members executed a search warrant at his Lewis Street home. Investigators seized cocaine and over $4000 in cash from the house, as well as scales, a cocaine “grinder,” and other drug paraphernalia. Other defendants facing criminal charges include Ronald Paschall, also known as “APP,” 42, a Northampton man associated with “The Stones” - a subset of the Bloods street gang. Paschall has a prior criminal record including assault

and felony drug possession. On July 6, he was arrested in Suffolk County by Task Force investigators as he was returning to the East End from allegedly picking up a kilo and a half of cocaine in NYC. Paschall has been indicted by a Grand Jury for Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance in the First Degree, a Class A Felony. DA Spota said the investigation revealed that Paschall was picking up cocaine twice a week, which he then sold to resellers who distributed the cocaine to users in East Hampton, Riverhead, Southampton, and Southold Towns. The investigation broadened, District Attorney Spota said, into a second distribution ring run by Paschall’s fellow gang members Jimmy Dean, 38, of Baiting Hollow and Dean’s runner, Dwayne Harris, 31, of Riverhead, who sold cocaine primarily. Dean, a prior felony offender convicted of selling narcotics for which he received a five-year prison

sentence, is believed to be a leader of the “The Stones” gang on the East End. On July 13, police executed a search warrant at Dean’s Warner Drive home and seized heroin, cocaine, packaging materials, a loaded shotgun in the master bedroom next to Dean’s bed and another firearm, a loaded semi-automatic Glock, in Dean’s car. The handgun was traced to North Carolina where it had been reported stolen. Dwayne Harris of 332 Hamilton Ave., also an alleged member of the Stones gang, has a prior criminal record including drug possession and DWI convictions. Also attending the press conference with DA Spota were Riverhead Town Supervisor Sean Walter and Southampton Town Supervisor Jay Schneiderman, and officials of law enforcement agencies affiliated with the East End Drug Task Force including US Immigration & Customs Enforcement, Homeland Security Investigations, Lt. Pete Healey of the NY State Police, the Suffolk County Sheriff’s Office, Suffolk County Police Deputy Chief Robert Oswald and Deputy Inspector Armando Valencia who is the Commanding Officer of the SCPD Narcotics Section, Chief Martin Flatley of the Southold PD, Southampton Town Police Chief Rob Pearce, Southampton Village PD Chief Tom Cummins, Riverhead Town Police Chief David Hegemiller, and the Suffolk County Probation Department’s Director of Probation Patrice Delpolsky. “Drug dealers and weapons are a deadly combination. We are pleased to have removed several of both off the streets of Suffolk County during these enforcement operations,” said Angel M. Melendez, special agent in charge of HSI New York. “As a member of the East End Drug Task Force, we work as a team to dismantle drug trafficking organizations that flood our communities with drugs and violence”. The East End Drug Task Force is a multi-jurisdictional drug enforceCONTINUED ON B-7.

Campaign 2016 Incumbents Run Again

By Rick Murphy

When you’ve been in the New York State Senate for 40 years, elections tend to become passé. Consider Ken LaValle, who first won election to that august body in 1976. “He is running this year, he just hasn’t put out a press release or anything,” an aide said this week. A lot has to do with the fact that LaValle has garnered at least 60 percent of the vote every election since 1978. LaValle, 77, will square off against Greg Fischer of Calverton, who has the Democratic line on the ballot. District 1 comprises the five East End towns and the eastern half of the Town of Brookhaven. LaValle is the chair of the Higher Education Committee in the State Senate. He has Republican, Conservative, and Independence party support. Fred Thiele, who frequently teams with LaValle to co-sponsor

legislation in Albany, will seek a 12th term in the New York State Assembly. Heather Collins of East Quogue, who ran against Thiele two years ago, has garnered the Republican nod. Thiele recently announced he has been endorsed by four political parties, including the Independence, Democratic, Working Families and Women’s Equality parties for the November 8 General Election. Thiele and Collins will vie for the 1st Assembly District seat; the district covers the Towns of East Hampton, Shelter Island, Southampton and a portion of southeastern Brookhaven. Anthony Palumbo of New Suffolk, a Republican, will seek reelection in the Second Congressional District William Schilling of Miller Place declined the Democratic nomination to run against Palumbo and will be replaced on the ballot by Michael Conroy. Thiele is a local true and true. He is a native of Sag Harbor and graduated from Pierson High School in 1971. He graduated from Southampton College in 1976 with a B.A. summa cum laude in political science and history. LaValle was born in Brooklyn, and graduated from Hempstead High School. He received a B.S degree from Adelphi College in 1961 and an M.S. in Education from SUNY New Paltz in 1964. He received a Juris Doctorate from the Touro College Jacob D. Fuchsberg Law Center and lives in Port Jefferson.

New Gig For Bishop

Strategy, a government-affairs firm specializing in advocacy, government markets, and organized labor. Bishop is representing Brookhaven Memorial Hospital Medical Center. According to the Department of Justice, Brookhaven Memorial Hospital in 2010 agreed to pay $2.92 million, plus interest, to settle allegations that the hospital defrauded Medicare, the Justice Department announced today. The government alleged that the hospital fraudulently inflated its charges to Medicare patients to obtain enhanced reimbursement from the federal health care program. “Conduct like that alleged here drives up the costs of health care for all of us,” said Tony West, Assistant Attorney General for the Justice Department’s Civil Division. “ The same year, Bishop cosponsored an earmark directing $150,000 to the hospital for facilities and equipment. The hospital was one of the largest employers in Bishop’s former district. Bishop recently indicated

in a lobbying filing that he would be focusing on “meaningful use,” a Medicare and Medicaid program that incentivizes the use of certified electronic health records. Before his stint in Congress Bishop spent 29 years working as administrator at Southampton College, then part of the Long Island University system. The Southampton campus was closed because it was losing money at an alarming rate. In 2012 Bishop helped secure a fireworks permit for a well-heeled constituent despite the fact there were active piping plover nests near the site. It proved to be his downfall. A three-month investigation by the Office Of Congressional Ethics (OCE) into a complaint about the matter concluded there was wrongdoing: “There is a substantial reason to believe that a violation of House rules, standards of conduct and federal law occurred,” the

Now that the preliminary is over, the Main Event looms: Zeldin, ThroneHolst, for the title of “Congressman, First District.” Throne-Holst threw out the first salvo this week. The Democratic Party nominee, who survived a tight primary battle, has her sights set on Zeldin, the Republican incumbent who knocked off 12-year veteran Tim Bishop two years ago. “It’s no surprise that Zeldin’s in lockstep with Republican nominee Trump,” Throne-Holst said via a press release which not coincidentally was sent out during the Republican Convention – when Zeldin was there in Cleveland front and center. ”While Lee Zeldin is away from his district and busy joining the Trump train(wreck), we are back home on Long Island, doing the real work and addressing the issues important to working families across the Island.” Throne-Holst said.

report read. The constituent, Eric Semler, had reportedly invested a significant amount of money in a business venture controlled by Robert F.X. Sillerman, a lifelong friend of Bishop’s. Semler asked Sillerman to intervene on his behalf and the Bishop camp then called and suggested a $10,000 campaign contribution be made by Semler. The FBI investigated – The Independent broke that story nationwide – but eventually declined to pursue charges. Loretta Lynch, who was in charge of the investigation, was subsequently named United Stated Attorney General. Lee Zeldin ran against Bishop in 2013, when the incumbent was seeking a seventh term. But with the FBI investigation very much in the forefront, Zeldin pulled off a shocker, ousting Bishop by a 6040 margin.

“Congressman Zeldin has worked tirelessly on behalf of New York’s First Congressional District, securing victory after victory for Long Island residents,” Zeldin spokesperson Sarah Frank said. “The Congressman’s hard work on behalf of our community, state, and nation is evident through the strong support that he continues to receive for his re-election campaign.” That support is manifesting itself in cold hard cash. According to campaign filings Zeldin has almost $2 million in his war chest after raising $568,436 in the second quarter of 2016 alone. But Throne-Holst is no slouch when it comes to attracting financial backers. Her opponent in the recent Democratic Party Primary, Dave Calone, complained that ThroneHolst raised $2 million for the primary battle. The race is shaping up as a doozy. Both parties have targeted it. The national Democrats say Zeldin is especially vulnerable. “Lee Zeldin has just been named the seventh most vulnerable House member in the nation,” Throne-Holst said. “But we’re going up against Zeldin’s powerful friends including Paul Ryan, the Koch brothers, and Donald Trump.” “For over a year now, Congressman Zeldin’s opponent and Democratic Party operatives have desperately tried to spin reality about the Congressman’s strong record for Long Islanders,” Frank countered.

RICK’S SPACE How To Make It Through The Summer Alive I know we all complain about the traffic around here, and it is truly unbearable. We’re all concerned about the current crop of drivers as well, the ones who are rude and aggressive and speed and pass you on the right and all that. But I’m here today to give a little talk to a whole new class of motorists – stupid ones. Maybe we were taught better. Growing up in Sag Harbor my dad would take me out and let me drive when I was really young, around 13. It’s because traffic was nonexistent and the roads were safe. Still, I learned the basics. When it was time to get our Learner’s Permits all of us resolutely studied that little manual you got from the Department of Motor Vehicles. Failing the test would be humiliating, plus you wouldn’t be able to borrow dad’s car when you were 16 and wanted to impress girls. Let me start by giving all you

Go ahead, check to make sure nothing is coming and inch out. Go ahead. Look again to your left. Nothing there? Then it’s OK to make a right turn on a red light after you stop! It’s OK! Now it wasn’t so bad, was it? Yes, I KNOW it didn’t take very long! When we were kids we learned how to make hand signals when driving. Arm out straight meant we were making a left. If our arm was at a 90 degree angle, we were signaling a right turn and so on. Nowadays we have electronic signals so we don’t even have to

KAYAK

roll down the window, which was a nuisance in rain and snow. Just flip the turning signal down for a left and up for a right and the job is done. Let me explain this. When you signal, you are notifying the other drivers of your intentions. If we don’t know, accidents can happen. This is sometimes accompanied by death. I for one, do not want to die because I am not prepared to meet my maker (I have too much original sin on my soul). Here’s another one that may shock you: you shouldn’t pull into oncoming traffic when there are cars coming. I know, I know, you see that center turning lane there, and you think, “I’ll pull in there and then one of these sweet drivers will let me in.” No we won’t, but that’s not the point. The point is that right behind that truck barreling toward you is a car that is planning on turning. And it is going to pull into the turning lane, although the driver doesn’t see you sitting there because he was behind a truck. End of life. Which brings me to you bicyclists out there. I’m not talking about the little kids or couples out for a leisurely ride on a country road. I’m talking about the Alpha types going 40 miles and hour who refuse to

July 27, 2016

B-7

pull over because they think they can go faster than you. Facts: No, you can’t, and if I hit you, you will die. I’ll be fine, although I’ll mourn the dent in my truck but not your wasted life. Do us all a favor: don’t ride a bike like you drive a car. Then there is this bucolic scene: A family of four on a leisurely morning bicycle outing. Dad in front, Mom next, followed by the little miss, who is maybe 11, and Junior, who is all of seven. They have money, no doubt, judging from the expensive bikes and state-of-the-art biker-friendly wardrobe and gear. Junior, who looks just like dad, is swerving, obviously uneasy on a two-wheeler. His helmet keeps falling over his eyes. My guess is mom and dad met out here, maybe stopping for a soda at the Sagg Store after an early morning bike ride way back when. Naturally, they want to relive those magic moments with the little ones. So they ride, in single file more or less, down Montauk Highway on the Saturday of July Fourth weekend. What’s wrong with this picture? Well, imagine a family of four going for a fun-filled vacation in Da Nang in 1969. The odds of getting out alive are about the same.

FlowerBox Wall Gardens: A Blooming Business If there is any truth to the notion that everyone loves flowers then the proof is on full display at FlowerBox Wall Gardens’ work for some of the biggest design companies in the US, most prestigious hotels and restaurants in the City, posh Upper East Side Residences and prestigious charitable affairs. Two childhood friends from Istanbul, Serkan Yapicilar and Kerem Ozseker, launched the FlowerBox Wall Gardens concept in the US two years ago out of their love for everything green. “Our dads were amazing flower gardeners. They always sort of competed with each other on who would have the best-kept garden. Flowers have always been a big part of our world since we were kids,” they said. FlowerBox’s story became a success story early on as its unique concept caught the attention of some of the city’s biggest design firms. “About two years ago, interior design started going green. Everyone seemed to be looking for unique, sustainable, eco-friendly products for their homes or businesses. We were the first in the US market to offer interior wall gardens, handcrafted in the US, made out of natu-

ral, preserved plants that needed no maintenance for five years,” the two founders explained. But things weren’t easy at the beginning, as they had to educate the market about their new, revolutionary concept that made interior living walls a concept of the past. Kerem and Serkan were national champions in wake boarding and hockey back in Turkey and well familiar with the effort and selfmotivation it takes to succeed. “We started approaching some of the biggest firms and designers that we wanted to work with. It wasn’t easy to get those first introductory meetings, it took a lot of hard work and perseverance, but every time we did, we got the job and then some. “People were tired of the large amount of maintenance needed for a living wall and were looking for alternatives. We were really at the right place at the right time. Flowerbox is now in 32 countries in the world and we couldn’t be happier to own its US rights,” Serkan revealed. FlowerBox Wall Gardens just recently displayed its work in full grandeur in The Hamptons during Samuel Waxman’s Cancer Research Foundation’s 12th Annual

Buzz thinks buying a new car should still be a fun experience. Not that long ago, buying a new car was a great experience for the whole family. Unfortunately, not so much anymore for some people. That’s because some local dealers have been using dubious tactics like the old bait-and-switch or confusing payment plans and extra charges. Not at Buzz Chew. You only need to know three things. First, the price you pay when you pick up your new car or truck is the same as the day you looked at it. Second, Buzz believes it’s only a good deal if both parties are satised. Third, Buzz’s name is on every car and truck.

Then & Now

The Amagansett Life Saving and Coast Guard Station was originally built in 1902, and was the third in the hamlet. Life Saving Stations were extremely popular in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s on the East End covering most of the coast. The purpose of these stations was to rescue sailors form coastal shipwrecks. The photo above is “the sand covered road after the hurricane of 1938” explained David Lys, director of the United States Life Saving and Coast Guard Station Society, Incorporated. Lys has documented the project from its inception and shared historical “before” and after photographs with The Independent. The most known lasting effect of the hurricane was the creation of the Shinnecock Inlet. The “after” picture at right depicts how the building looks today. After extensive restoration, the building has the same exterior as the original. Volunteers still raising funds to recreate the interior, and add a museum. L.F.

How Does Your

GARDEN

THE INDEPENDENT • Traveler Watchman

GROW? By Shelly Tashman

Oh No! End Of July.

The summer and the garden are rushing by. Not to worry, August has Rose of Sharon, Hibiscus, Dahlias, Canna Elephant Ears, etc. Also, the angle of sunlight changes as the month goes on creating unique and lovely effects. Be careful. It is hot, hot, hot and the time adds up as you tend to chores like deadheading, weeding, staking, pruning, etc. Use sunscreen, hydrate, and wear a hat. The hydrangeas should be full and colorful. Cut them for flowers

in the house now. If you want to dry them out for winter use, then they have to stay on the stem to fade first. The ones that brownout are probably getting too much afternoon sun. Shasta Daisies are dying down. Cut them sooner than necessary and cut down more than you think you should. This will

help the plant conserve energy and produce more blossoms. Bee Balm, which should be peaking, also gets more blossoms if cut back quickly and firmly. First, however, enjoy the color and hummingbirds. The perennial Hybiscus are tall now and need supportive staking as high up as possible because the large blossoms will cause them to fall over if not firmed up. Rose bushes. S ee if yo u c a n reduce their size and shape them to be more compact. Clear the yellow leaves from around the plant. Day Lilies. The tiger ones are gone in my garden, but others are going strong. The foliage turns yellow and slumps around now. I pull the discolored ones and trim back the green leaves. I don’t know if Joe Pyre Weed is well known. I needed gaps filled in shady areas and this plant does well in low sun. It has a nice, but not brightly colored, blossom. This

plant works even better with more sun, grows seven to nine feet tall and reproduces like, well, a weed. I use it in front of gaps and by mid July the gaps are gone. In a large group, this plant is surprisingly attractive. When the bloom fades, cut back as far as you can up to 18 inches and in about 3 weeks you’ll get a second blooming. Sedum should be big and look like broccoli. If you haven’t staked them, they are probably out of shape. You can prop them now to regain a better appearance. Be aware, they will snap off easily unless handled delicately. I winter Canna and Elephant Ears in a black garbage bag on a shelf in my basement. Both of these plants have attractive foliage and the Canna has a vibrant blossom that keeps coming till frost. The cukes and tomatoes on my deck are producing salad quality fruit so throwing money at my previous problems with vegetables by buying big containers is working. Please don’t ask the price per tomato. My wife’s joy is worth it. No matter what, paused often and look around.

Insight

From the “It’s About Time” files: Last week Governor Andrew Cuomo signed legislation expanding New York’s “Move Over” Law to include volunteer firefighters and ambulance workers. The measure requires drivers to slow down and move over a lane when approaching vehicles with flashing blue or green lights that are operated by volunteer firefighters or ambulance workers involved in a roadside emergency. Previously, the “Move-Over” law only applied to drivers approaching stopped police, emergency or hazard vehicles with flashing red and white or amber lights. Now, if only lawmakers would craft and pass a “Get Out The Way” law, selfless volunteers trying to navigate our congested roads might save themselves a few blood pressure points as they attempt to get victims they’re trying to save to the ER. And, given the nature of oblivious motorists who think it’s fine to “block the box,” think of the revenue area PDs could collect for the moving violations. Speaking of moving violations, or, rather feeling violated while moving, get ready to add extra time to the already attenuated travel to The Hamptons from the city. The powers that be think it’s a good idea to undertake construction on the Wading River and Manorville Roads, which link the LIE to SR 27 this week. Both of them at once. Seriously?

Independent VOICES

Be Happy

Dear Editor, Feeling blue? Eat blueberries and green vegetables. A recent study from the University of Warwick in England shows that people who eat a lot of fruits and vegetables - up to eight portions a day - are substantially happier than people who do not. It stands to reason. Most people feel good about themselves when they make healthy choices that can help prevent serious illnesses and positively impact their quality of life. I lost weight when I went vegan nearly 25 years ago and I feel especially good knowing that my food choices don’t harm animals or degrade the environment. C’mon, get happy: Check out www.PETA.org to find out how to incorporate more fruits

and vegetables into your diet. HEATHER MOORE PETA FOUNDATION

Anna Throne-Holst Dear Editor, Our body politic is riven with anger, grievance and mistrust, a most unfortunate state of affairs that calls for calm voices, sturdy leadership and a can-do record of performance. These are traits that Anna Throne-Holst can provide as we look for leaders who can recall a time when our parties argued over best approaches and rewarding compromise. Anna is a great candidate for Congress. As a three-term Southampton Town Supervisor, Anna produced structurally balanced budgets (no hole-plugging financial gimmicks) with no tax rate increase, reduced borrowing in combination with pay-as-you go capital spending, improved Southampton Town’s credit rating from “credit watch” status to the highest credit rating available, reducing

Ed Gifford Southampton’s debt obligation. This success alone warrants a serious consideration for her next step, representing the 1st Congressional district in Congress, but her complete record of achievement is stout and worthy of acclaim: environmental improvements,

land preservation, water quality initiatives, constituent ser vice, government reorganization, and other successes marked her tenure in Southampton. She is worthy of your consideration. MIKE ANTHONY © Karen Fredericks

Sunscreen CONTINUED FROM PAGE 7. sunscreen) relative to the amount of solar energy required to produce sunburn on unprotected skin. As the SPF value increases, sunburn protection increases. According to the FDA, all sunscreens must be tested according to an SPF test procedure which measures the amount of UV radiation exposure it takes to cause sunburn when a person is using a sunscreen in comparison to how much UV exposure it takes to cause a sunburn when they do not use a sunscreen. Schumer said that proper SPF labeling is important because of the prevalence of skin cancer in this country. According to the CDC, skin cancer is the most common cancer in the United States. More than 8500 people are diagnosed with skin cancer every day. On average, one American dies from melanoma every hour. The AAD recommends everyone protect their skin from the sun by wearing protective clothing and using a sunscreen with a SPF of 30 or higher. The FDA first looked into the deceptive practices of sunscreen p r od uc ts over 30 y e a rs a g o , but since that time, the rate of melanoma has doubled in the United States. According to the American Cancer Society, an estimated 76,380 new cases of melanoma will be diagnosed in 2016. Schumer has been pushing the FDA to tighten its standards on labeling for years, helping to get new standards in place in 2011. Schumer is also urging the FDA to finalize sunscreen rules that were created based on the 2014 passed legislation, the Sunscreen Innovation Act. The senator said the FDA has been “dragging its feet” in their testing of ultraeffective sunscreen ingredients that better protects individuals from sunburn and skin cancer. The FDA has been reviewing some of these ingredients for over a decade, and the superior sunscreens are available in almost every other country in the world. According to Schumer the FDA plays an integral role in determining the safety of the chemicals sold in products in the United States and should continue its strong oversight. However, products containing these chemicals have been sold ov e r s e as for more th a n tw o decades and the FDA should finalize rules that allow for these ingredients and sunscreens to be tested in an expeditious and efficient way.

Obituary Priscilla Bowden Potter Priscilla Bowden Potter, a fine arts painter who spent much of her life on the East End, died after a brief illness on July 19 in New York City. Born in Glen Cove in 1940, she graduated Radcliffe College, then studied painting at The Art Student’s League in NYC. In 1970, she won the Chaloner Prize and went to Paris to further her art studies. After a few years in France, she returned to the landscape she loved, settling into the famed art colony of East Hampton. It was there she met and married Jeffrey Potter, who pre-deceased her. Potter was a friend and biographer of Jackson Pollock. Together, the Potters were at the center of the art and literary world during its heyday on the South Fork. As her reputation as a painter grew, Potter’s work was shown in galleries and museums on Long Island, and in New York, Washington, D.C., Florida, Connecticut, and Oxford, England. She was described by her gallerist as “a strong and gifted artist who created works of lasting beauty.” Friends will remember her involvement in the local community – she played flute in a chamber group, loved the opera, and donated her art to charitable fundraisers, like The Retreat’s Artist Against Abuse Plate Auction. Friends pointed out she was a loyal and dedicated volunteer driver for the Meals on Wheels program. For a while, she lent her talents to making quirky video “shorts” for East Hampton’s LTV. Genie Henderson from LTV recalled, Potter signed them both up for the LTV five-week production course back when the local station was located

“in a warehouse next to the town dump with equipment that was hard used and scavenged from other TV stations . . . Public access was something new and the notion that we could make our own TV show was a thrilling challenge.” Potter and Henderson launched a program called “Meet Your Neighbor, Neighbor,” with Jeffrey Potter out front interviewing community members. “Priscilla excelled at directing, she helped launch the Public Access Producers Association, served on the LTV Board, edited the newsletter and created dozens of shows for The Choral Society and other art/music events,” said Henderson.

“But it was, I think, in producing her series of ‘shorts’ that her quirky and wry sense of humor really found its palette . . . She brought so much originality to LTV, lifting the often amateur efforts of the rest of us into a new video art form.” Potter was a generous donor to the Pollock-Krasner House collection, Helen Harrison informed. “She was a gifted painter whose landscapes captured the essences of the places she loves,” said Harrison, the director of the Pollock-Krasner House and Study Center. In summary, friends and family said, “Priscilla was deeply loved and cherished for her inner beauty, her artistic talent, her wry sense of humor, and her love for family, friends, community, and the world of art.” She is survived by two sisters,

Linda Laux of Washington, D.C. and Mary Beth Bowden of New York City, two nieces and her husband’s four adult children. A memorial service may be held locally in the future.

Aviators Set Record, Win Title By Rick Murphy

Resolute. That’s what the Westhampton Aviators were at the beginning and remain today. Their singular focus on winning games yielded two milestones this week: first place in the Hamptons Collegiate Baseball League, and the most wins in HCBL history. Westhampton sits in the top

spot with 26-13-1 mark to hold off the determined North Fork Ospreys, who have won seven of their last 10 and stand in second with a 24-16, in a virtual tie with the Montauk Mustangs (23-15). Riverhead, at 18-21-1, Sag Harbor (17-22-1) and Southampton (17-23) are all mathematically alive for the fourth and final playoff berth as of this writing.

THE BODY

The regular season ends today with Montauk at Shelter Island (2 PM), Sag Harbor at Westhampton, North Fork at Southampton and Shelter Island out in Montauk. Those games are all slated for 5 PM. Westhampton broke the record on Saturday in style, crushing Riverhead at the loser’s field 11-1 Saturday. The team’s latest hitting

sensation, Trey Silvers homered for the second consecutive game and for the third time in the last five contests. He had a four RBI day at the plate for Westhampton giving him a total of seven in the last two games – he has taken over the league lead in that department. Westhampton rallied for six runs in the top of the third inning. Matt Dunlevy drove in the first run on a sacrifice fly. Ross Puskarich singled to make it 2-0 and then Silvers unloaded two batters later with a grand slammer to break open the game. Westhampton picked up five more runs in the eighth including a three run dinger from Puskarich, who had four ribbies on the day to take over the league lead. Reiss Knehr went 5 2/3 innings for the Aviators, allowing one run on three hits, improving his record to 4-1 with a 1.15 ERA. He is among the league leaders in several pitching categories. Montauk solidified its hold on a playoff berth by besting Sag Harbor 6-4 on Saturday. Jamie Galazin had three hits including a dinger, his first. Montauk struck first in the bottom of the third, on a two run shot by Rob Vani. The Whalers tied it in the fourth on ribbies by Jack Thompson and Nick Matera. In the bottom of the fourth, with two on and two out, Galazin smacked his homer, a three run blast to make it a 5-2 affair. Matera’s homer in the eighth cutting the Mustangs lead down to two runs but Zach Barnes shut the door on the loser’s with a perfect ninth to earn the save in the ninth to get his 7th save on the season. Mustangs starter Bradley Case went five innings to get his fifth victory of the season. He struck out six, raising his total to 51, tops in the league.

FANTASY SP By Skippy Brown

THE INDEPENDENT • Traveler Watchman

RTS

Slow And Steady Vs. Fast And Loose There is a guy named Brad in the Albany-based Andy Robustelli Fantasy Football League – one of the oldest in the country – who is very predictable on draft day and when setting his line-ups during the season. He invariably chooses veteran, reliable players. He doesn’t like the flashy big-ticket guys. His team mirrors his own personality – even, measured, and dull. But he wins his share of games. I tend to go the other way – I’m big on the flashy guys who dance in the end zone and taunt the other team’s players and make headlines on and off the field. I win my share, too. Ta k e D e S e a n J a c k s o n o f Washington, for example. He’s had a wonderful career and even though he was hurt last season and limited to 10 games played he exhibited the mind-numbing inconsistency that can either win or lose games for you. For example, against Buffalo he exploded for eight catches, 153 yards and a 77-yard touchdown. He’s had a lot of games like that in his storied career. But against New Orleans, in a game that figured to be high scoring he disappeared, catching only five passes good for a paltry 44 yards. That’s DeSean – peanuts or shells. Compare this to Jarvis Landry of Miami. Yes, he has his ups and downs, like all players do. But he had between 50 and 100 yards in 12 of his 16 games. In other words, he’s reliable. So which is better, slow and steady or fast and unpredictable? The answer is, it depends. Here is a rule of thumb to go by: as your fantasy season progresses, assess you team. One way to measure performance (aside from won/loss record) is total fantasy points. That’s because wins and losses can be fickle – one team can win 40-39 and a far superior team can lose 89-88. Here’s the plan: if you have scored more points during the season than your opponent, stock up on reliable guys, the ones who deliver. Maybe they won’t explode for a huge game, but they usually deliver a good, steady performance. If, on the other hand, you are playing a far superior team, you are going to have to think outside the box. Scour the waiver wire, make a trade or two, and target guys who are all or nothing types. Then, hope you get a few remarkable performances to tip the scales in your favor.

These rules apply not only to season-long leagues but DFS (daily) leagues as well. In a large tournament, there will be thousands of entries. Everyone playing will know who the top projected players are going to be, but most of us have no chance to win. Why? The Big Boys have taken over

www.indyeastend.com

DFS. Let’s say there is a $100,000 tournament and the entry fee is $10. Most of us will have one or two teams, at most. The pros have hundreds and sometimes even thousands of entries. They use a computer program called Scripting, which will take the top four or five players at each position and come up with every conceivable permutation of lineups involving those players. Then the program will actually enter these “teams” into the contest so the players don’t have to go through the tedious process of recording hundreds of lineups. So some guys will put up $400, $800, maybe even more, for a chance to win the 100

grand. Back to our strategy – since we can’t afford to compete on that level, try to zig while the others are zagging. This is called a contrarian play in the business, Pick a starting lineup that is filled with big-play guys – explosive football players who can break a 90-yard scoring play at any time. More often than not there’s also a guy who can play an entire game and not touch the ball. Still, you’ll have a unique line-up that no one else will have. Think there is no merit in this strategy? Take it from me – I took down a $100,000 Draft Kings tournament using this exact strategy.

Ping Sets Mark For Aviators

Independent / Courtesy

Aaron Ping blasted 13 homeruns this season, most in the Hamptons Collegiate Baseball League history. By Rick Murphy

Aaron Ping made HCBL history last Thursday, and he did it in style. Ping cracked his 13th homerun against Montauk to shatter the league record — and it was a grand slammer to boot. Ping’s team, the Westhampton Aviators, cruised to a 14-2 victory and sit in first place with a 26-13-1 mark – the most wins ever by a team in a single season. Ping is leading Dan Schock, who plays for North Fork. Schock clubbed two in a game last week and now has 12. Doug Trimble of Southampton has eight dingers during the regular season. Despite Ping’s impressive slugging he’s had to settle for second best in the RBI race. Max Smith has 40 runs batted in, one more than Ping. Ping’s teammate Ross Pusharich has knocked in 38

runs. Another Aviator is winning the batting title. Matt Dunlevy is hitting a robust .385 for the season. Hunter Courson, playing for Southampton, is at .353. Daniel Franchi, yet another Westhampton hitting machine, has a .351 mark. Brady Case (Southampton), Chris Sheehan (Sag Harbor) and Frank Valentino (Riverhead) are tied with five wins each to tie for the lead in that category. Case has 51 strikeouts, most in the league, two more than Reiss Knehr of Westhampton. Valentino has tallied 48 thus far. Westhampton’s Seamus Brazill, a six-foot nine righthander and a sophomore at Hofstra, leads the league with a minuscular O.97 Earned Run Average. Knehr is second with a 1.15 ERA. Richard Palacios, a fleet-footed Brooklyn boy who attends Towson and plays for the North Fork Ospreys, has swiped 25 bases to lead the league and was only caught three times. Kiambu Fentress, a native of Nashville who attends Vanderbilt and plays for Riverhead, has 24 in 28 attempts. Matt Sinatro of Shelter Island also has 24 in 28 attempts. Jamie Galazin, who is a junior at St. Johns and plays for Montauk, has 23 and has only been caught once.

On The Water Fluke, Mahi, And Sharks, Too Shinnecock Bay The fluke bite has been pretty good this past week, with most anglers limiting out in a few hours. 6-inch Gulp on a 3/4 ounce bucktail has been tearing up the bottom. On the flats by the inlet and just to the west of the Ponquogue Bridge are holding the better numbers of fish. Peconic Bay Porgies are still holding strong around Rodgers Rock. Sandworms and some clam chum are your best bet. Shouldn’t be hard to find the cocktail bluefish either. Ocean The seabass bite has been good on the open bottom just off the wrecks and reefs and the keeper size fluke are mixed in there too. Clams for the seabass and live killies for the fluke. Fluke continue to hold in the 90 feet range. Still hearing of better fish a bit deeper out with the squid. Bluefin tuna are out are the 30 mile mark. They are taking ballyhoo and green machines mostly but they have been hitting other colors as well. The sharking is decent within 10 miles of the inlet. Plenty of fresh mackerel baits around. Shinnecock Inlet Bluefish are running throughout the day; just look for the birds working. Stripers are taking eels at night while drifting. Fluking has been decent from both east and west sides. There are also a few seabass and porgies mixed in there, also hidden in the rocks. Shinnecock Canal Trigger fish started to make a showing here a few days ago. There have also been porgies at the north end off of the jetties and fluke at the south end in the locks. Fluke still holding in the canal with a few keepers to keep you coming back. Ponquogue Bridge Clam chumming during the day and eels at night is bringing in a few better stripers. On the south side floating dock they are catching some keeper size fluke. Ocean Beaches The sand beaches to the east and west of the inlet are producing bass at night and blues during the day. Calling Dr. Skipper, Calling Dr. Skipper

Over 30 years ago, while trying to sail out of Hurricane Alberto’s way in the North Atlantic, a rogue wave hit us and I went airborne. Catching the side of my head on a brass runner, I managed not to be thrown below at a high rate of speed. Of course, it didn’t do wonders for the side of my head. I was crewing with a new captain for the first time and, when the Chief Medical Officer Marty Boorstein grabbed the scotch because there was no alcohol in the medical kit, I started to worry that more was at work here than Alberto. This column is about the advances since then.

It’s Just A Band-Aid When someone wants to say that something hasn’t really been fixed, they often say, ‘They just put a Band-Aid over it.’ Band-Aid, which is a brand name, realized that they could do better themselves and the new waterproof BandAids, on the market now for a few years, are dramatically better than the old version. There is a semipermeable membrane over sterile gauze. This makes them waterproof and breathable. Wounds need that

in order to stay clean and yet be warm and moist enough to promote circulation and healing. These new Band-Aids, and 3M’s “NexCare,”are roughly twice as expensive, but worth every penny in healing and prevention from infection. These are fine for cuts and punctures but, if you have blistering on your hands from a burn of some type, you’ll need something that has medical product directly integrated into the dressing, and still breathes too. Such a product would be BandAid’s Advanced Healing Blister Cushion. Not all burns come from fire – think about putting your hand on a hot exhaust pipe or having a line run through your ungloved hand at a high rate of speed. Allevyn and Duoderm have similar products and all can last for several days in place if need be.

Liquid Dressings? Many of us have heard of the use of SuperGlue as a liquid dressing/ersatz stitching. It is clever, other than the fact that the SuperGlue itself comes with a warning that says that it is toxic. NewSkin and Dermabond

are liquid bandage products that are designed for the same purpose but don’t sport a warning label that says “toxic!” I have no experience with these products under maritime conditions but I have heard some skippers note that, under harsh conditions, “the stitches come out.”

Pain Killers? If you are going to keep anything aboard stronger than Tylenol, you’ll need a doctor’s prescription to buy it and training how to administer it. Daunting. With that said, many Search And Rescue teams both at the ski patrol level and on-thewater are opting for something called “fentanyl.” It is sprayed in the victim’s nose where it is fast acting but short-duration. You’ll still need medical training and prescription processing but, in lieu of giving someone a needle injection with morphine for a crushed leg from a shark bite, this might be something for the right skipper with the right profile to look into. Assists? Need some help out there? Don’t forget some low-tech devices – such an otoscope (The thing the doctor sticks in your ear during an

July 27, 2016

33

exam.). “Dr Mom” offers a cheap, lightweight, and stainless steel model with LED light. Great for fine print, finding splinters and a bit of barnacle that embedded itself in your finger. What do you do if someone needs artificial respiration? First, I hope you’re up to date on your Red Cross First Aid training. If not, Google it and get into a class. In addition to getting good solid training on medical tech, you’ll be properly trained in CPR, including artificial respiration. And when you train for that, one of the key items is something between your mouth and the victim’s. Only when “in extremis” do we bypass modern day sanitation and body-fluid control. One device you might want to have aboard is the NuMask. It fits inside the victim’s mouth like a snorkel rather than over the face like a mask. In summary, you don’t have to stop at the over-the-counter medical kit. You can take your skippering skills to the next level. Remember, you are responsible for the crew, the boat and the boat’s wake. BTW, if you are interested in being part of USCG Forces, email me at JoinUSCGAux@aol.com or go directly to the D1SR Human Resources department, which is in charge of new members matters, at DSO-HR and we will help you “get in this thing.”
