Three Days, Three Blazes
By Kitty Merrill
Firefighters across the East End were called out by the score to battle three dramatic blazes that left one Springs family homeless, a mansion in cinders, and a beloved beach closed, its concession destroyed. At roughly 4:25 AM Saturday the Springs Fire Department was called to 787 Accabonac Road for a report of a working house fire. Arriving firefighters found the residence to be fully involved with fire, and immediately called for mutual aid from the East Hampton, Amagansett and Sag Harbor fire departments for tanker and manpower to the scene. Three occupants - a mother and two children - managed to escape the fire but were later transported to the hospital to be treated for smoke inhalation. Units were on scene for at least two hours, as was the East Hampton Town Fire Marshal, who responded to investigate the fire’s cause and origin. A call for donations to help the family went out almost immediately through social media. Cupsogue Beach was closed Sunday following a blaze that leveled the popular Westhampton Dunes Beach Hut Saturday night. Close to two dozen area fire departments and ambulance crews responded to the wind-fed fire. The snack bar and music venue, part of an islandwide chain of concessions, had been closed due to the weather,

GUARANTEED TO MAKE SOME PEOPLE ANGRY So I’m getting some nasty emails from people who hate my column. This is confusing to me because this newspaper is free, so if you don’t like what I’m saying, why waste your time reading it? From the look of their rantings, my guess is the people writing me are kale-eating, quinoa-loving liberals who are more concerned with the Washington football team being called the “Redskins” than they are with ISIS cutting off innocent people’s heads. I’m sure when we catch that ISIS head-cutting monster the first thing the liberal loonies will ask is, “Was he read his rights?” I’m sure these liberal loonies will appreciate the following “Only in America” lines that have come to me from four or five different friends. I have edited them down to protect the innocent: Only in America . . . could politicians talk about the greed
of the rich at a $35,000-per-plate Obama campaign fundraising event. Only in America . . . could people claim that the government discriminates against black Americans when we have a black President, a black Attorney General and roughly 20 percent of the federal workforce is black. Only in America . . . could we have had the two people most responsible for our tax code, Timothy Geithner (former Secretary of the Treasury under Obama) and Charles Rangel (who once ran the Ways and Means Committee), BOTH turn out to be tax cheats who are in favor of higher taxes. Only in America . . . could you need to present a driver’s license to cash a check or buy alcohol, but not to vote. Only in America . . . could the rich people – who pay 86 percent of all income taxes – be accused of not paying their “fair share” by people who don’t pay any income
ENOUGH ALREADY! Ray Rice is about to replace the missing Malaysia Airlines airplane as the most over-covered news story of the century. I’m tired of seeing television news programs showing me the same footage every night of Ray Rice slugging his girlfriend in an elevator. Yes, I know it was a terrible thing. Yes, I believe Ray Rice should be punished for this heinous act. I say let the punishment fit the crime and force Ray Rice to share an elevator with Beyoncé’s sister Solange and let’s hope she kicks the crap out of him. As for the other ugly football scandal, Minnesota star running back Adrian Peterson was benched after a story came out that he had hit his four-year-old son with a thin tree limb called a switch. Peterson, who may have as many as seven children from seven different women, defended himself by tweeting, “I never imagined being in a position where the world is judging my parenting skills or calling me a child abuser because of the discipline I administered to my son.” That tweet, obviously written by this moron’s lawyers, makes Peterson sound like mild-mannered Ward Cleaver, the father in “Leave It to Beaver.” I say let’s lock the creep in the same elevator as Ray Rice and Beyoncé’s sister in a fight to the death. My money is on Beyoncé’s sister. I have a concern, which is how the National Football League

Commissioner Roger Goodell and his goons are going to react to the Peterson affair, and whether they will then suspend him for life. I’m also concerned because when my brother and I were kids, if we did anything wrong my father would give us a slap on the behind. Do you think there is any chance that the NFL, which is on the defensive and lashing out at everyone, will ban my father from playing football for life even though he’s dead?
WHAT WOULD YOU DO? So Syrian President Bashar alAssad has a meeting with bumbling John Kerry and makes him an offer for Barack Obama to consider. Assad says, “I will completely eliminate each and every ISIS terrorist in Syria if you let me, just this one time, use chemical weapons on them.” DON’T GO SEE THE DROP If you live to be 75 you will live 39,420,000 minutes. Don’t waste 120 minutes of your life on The Drop, a pitiful movie which is a horrible, dark, depressing, meaningless piece of doodoo. I started to check out during the scene where a cut and battered puppy was pulled out of a garbage pail somewhere in Brooklyn. I walked out midway through the film, missing, as I have learned, the scene where the film’s dopey hero must dispose of a severed arm. Yuck. American Legion Building Turns 60
By Rick Murphy
Members of Sag Harbor’s American Legion Chelberg & Battle Post 388 used to meet in an upstairs room at the Municipal Building, until Frank Santacroce took over as Commander in 1949. “He was behind the effort to get a building,” said Cathy SantacroceWorwetz, his daughter. Monday will mark the 60th anniversary of the building erected in no small measure because of
Santacroce’s persistence. Fittingly, there will be a bench in front of the Post at 26 Bay Street dedicated that night – to Anne and Frank Santacroce. Frank, a member of the 111 Engineers - 36th Infantry Division of the United States Army, fought in South Africa, Central Europe, Naples-Foggia, Rhineland, Rome Arno, and Southern France. He was awarded the European African Middle Eastern Service Medal with

The Legion building as it appears today.
The 4th annual SeptemberFest is on the horizon. From Friday, September 26 through Sunday, September 28, Southampton Village brims with music, dance, food, entertainment, history and, of course, oodles of fun for the kiddies. New Life Crisis kicks it off Friday night with a concert and cocktail party in Agawam Park sponsored by the Southampton Rotary Club. All through the weekend, find activities, entertainment, and great eats throughout the village. Agawam Park will be the site for concerts, a chowder contest, the popular “Taste of the East End,” pumpkin carvers, circus performers, outdoor art and more. There’s a farmers market, book sale and the delightful antics of Jester Jim at the Southampton Arts Center, while the Historical Museum hosts a Harvest day Fair. The Southampton Cultural Center presents a juried art show and a Center Stage “Showstopper Showcase.” The Independent is a proud sponsor of SeptemberFest. Anne eventually joined the Legion as well. Anne Tedesco Santacroce served as First Lieutenant in the Army Nurse Corps. She was assigned to the 15th General Hospital Unit United States Army Active Federal Service as an Operating Room nurse in England, France and Belgium. She earned a WWII Victory Medal, the European African Middle Eastern Campaign Medal with three bronze stars, and was awarded the Medal of Liberty from the French Government, the first woman to ever receive that honor. Sue Santacroce Mandaville, another sibling, said once the members of the Post decided on IndependentAd_July12_Vert.pdf 1 purchasing the land they went into fundraising mode. “They would hold
block parties and shut down Main Street,” her father told her. The members raised $2000 and bought the land from Mobil Oil. On May 1, 1965 a gala party was hosted at the Legion – a mortgage burning party, Chelberg & Battle Post 388 belonged to the local membership lock, stock, and barrel on that date. Monday, in addition to the unveiling of the bench, there will be a cocktail party with hot and cold hors d’oeurves served. Members of the Santacroce family will be on hand. Emily Toy, Assistant Editor of The Independent, will also be on hand – Toy was an early American Legion College Scholarship winner as a Pierson High School senior in 2005. She was awarded $5000. Fifteen World War I veterans formed the local legion post in 1919. 7/27/12 PM It was4:33 originally named in honor of J.F. In 1920 members of the Most Valuable Asset Post learned another local soldier, So trust a company that’s always here for you. George Francis Battle, had died under similar circumstances and they voted to honor him by adding his name.

Bishop Clears One Hurdle By Rick Murphy
Embattled Congressman Tim Bishop isn’t out of the water but he is off the hook, at least for now. Bishop has been in the hot seat since the Office of Congressional Ethics investigated a complaint that Bishop did a constituent a campaign favor in return for a cash donation two years ago. The OCE found “substantial reason” to believe Bishop violated House rules and perhaps broke the law as well. The congressman unraveled a mountain of red tape to help secure a fireworks permit for a Sagaponack oceanfront homeowner, Eric Semler, who was also a business associate of Robert F.X. Sillerman, a heavy campaign contributor and close friend of Bishop. The fireworks went off as planned, despite an active Piping Plover nest situated on the beach near Semler’s house. T h e f o l l o w i n g y e a r, T h e Independent broke the story that FBI agents had come to Southampton questioning local officials with knowledge of Bishop’s role in securing a fireworks permit. Bishop spent about $100,000
fighting the allegations contained in the OCE report, lobbying the Office of Congressional Ethics, which is charged with acting on O CE findings, to end the investigation. The FBI did not comment about the status of its probe concerning Bishop. But a Bishop aide told Tom Brine of Newsday that the Department of Justice has decided not to prosecute Bishop. The Office of Congressional Ethics, though, still has the ball and has thus far refused to end the matter. However, insiders say it is unlikely to take any action until after the election. Semler wanted to stage a fireworks display in honor of his son’s bar mitzvah. But the presence of the plovers seemed to doom the idea. The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service was completely opposed to allowing the fireworks to happen five days before the event. “This event will likely cause adverse affects on the Piping Plover,” Steve Papa, a senior biologist with the USFWS told Edward Rubio, a logistics assistant for the Grucci fireworks company. ”Unfortunately . . . there is no possibility of

Grucci Fireworks informed Semler on May 21, 2012 that it had not received the necessary approvals for a fireworks display because of the Plover nest. Semler called Bishop, who agreed to intercede. Bishop sprang into action after a series of emails from Sillerman, mounting a full court press of
officials who had a say in the matter until all the agencies involved in the process signed off on the fireworks display. Semler and his wife ended up giving the Bishop campaign a total of $5000 a month later, but not before complaining – he called the solicitation from Bishop’s camp “really gross.” In one email Semler complained that Bishop, “didn’t hesitate to solicit me in the heat of the battle.”

CPF For ED40?
By Kitty Merrill
From super chichi private club for a chosen few to a public treasure enjoyed by all? That’s what the old East Deck motel could become, if East Hampton Town officials take the owners of the Montauk site up on their sale offer. Last Friday, in the wake of “significant public comment” attorneys for the club owners withdrew the current application and reported the property had been offered to the town for sale. The site plan application for the project known as ED40 was due for discussion before the planning board tonight. In the short time since the plan was revealed opponents have gathered close to 5000 signatures through a social media drive. A “paddle out” by protesters at Ditch Plains Beach earlier this month drew close to 100 participants and the “Save Ditch Plains” Facebook page reported reaching over 50,000 people, plus adding up 2000 “likes” and 4300 comments and shares. The ED40 proposal sought planning approval for the alteration of the existing buildings on the
three-plus-acre site to create a private beach club for members only. The plan called for renovations to the current structure and septic system to handle 179 members and as many as 537 daily occupants. A second story “event space” was proposed, as were a total of 100 parking spaces, including a portion planned below grade near a below grade loading dock. A new 7000 square foot pool and a Jacuzzi, plus 10,000 square feet of decking were proposed. Close to 200 trucks would haul sand to restore the dunes in front of the club. Then a boardwalk and stairs would be constructed. Opponents expressed horror at the thought of such a large scale disruption of the Ditch Plains neighborhood and beach, citing the impact to the environment and the effect on the community’s traditional way of life. Would club owners attempt to annex a beach that’s been home to surfers, families, and beach goers for decades? The answer to the question may be rendered moot, Store Logo

if town officials decide to move forward with a public purchase. Can they afford it? That’s a far from moot query. East Deck sold to ED40 at the end of last year for a reported price of $15 million. According to Scott Wilson, the town’s director of land acquisition and management, East Hampton’s Community Preservation Fund has

about $17 million available for new purchases. ED40’s attorneys noted, in their letter requesting an adjournment, that they’ll continue to work on the site plan application process, revising their plan, as the town board considers the potential purchase.

RICK’S SPACE My Treasures And Your Garbage Most of us are pack rats. I know I have a lot of stuff – way too much stuff. The trouble is, I’m convinced it’s all extremely valuable, even though in my heart I know most of it is junk. Here’s the thing: if you have a lot of stuff, even if it is valuable, and you don’t sell it, it’s junk. When we die our heirs are going to sweep in and do the very thing we’ve been afraid to do all these years -- have a yard sale and give our stuff away for a mere pittance. “How much for this Mickey Mantle baseball card? “I never heard of him, how about a nickel?” “How much for this jar of antique marbles? “A dime? But you can’t have the jar, I’m keeping that.” Most of my stuff came from someone else’s yard sale. That’s how delusional I am – I honestly believe this stuff has value. Every week when we come home from yard sales I find a prominent place in my man
cave for my latest treasure. Every once is a while I look up the name of an artist on a painting I acquired, believing with all my heart he is some obscure master with six toes or one ear. They never show up on Google. That means their works of art aren’t worth anything. They are junk. We have the “summer rental” discussion every year. We should rent out the house, find a small apartment to live in, and pocket some cash. “Why don’t we?” Karen will ask each winter. “Because we have 14 tons of crap and we’d have to throw it all out.” “No, we’ll have a yard sale.” This cuts to the heart of it. What if you haul all the personal belongings you cherish out to your front yard and no one buys anything? “Look, lady, this is an uncirculated Silver Surfer comic book from 1966. Wanna buy it?” “Naw, I don’t want that old junk.

Do you have any plastic butter dishes?” At least the little pieces of junk we have can be carried outside if we ever host a yard sale. The big stuff is down the basement, where it will reside forever. This is because whoever designed our house was on crack. The only way to get down the basement is through the hallway/ living room/dining room. The stairway is extremely narrow, as is the basement doorway. Oddly, huge beds, bureaus, appliances, bicycles in assorted states of disrepair, and not one or two, but several chandeliers in assorted states of disrepair have miraculously made it downstairs. It’s the bringing up part that is impossible. Given my bad back, combined with the sheer girth of the objects, the spiders and webs, and the degree of laziness I possess, I am loathe to carry up anything unless I am certain I get a decent monetary return. “Excuse me lady, but this is an 1840 mahogany, Shaker bed that Louis XII was once incontinent on. We’re asking $500.” “Naw. Will you take a quarter?” “OK!” “Then throw in that sword you

said belonged to King Arthur, the one you said he pulled out of a rock.” We went yard saling Saturday morning. One house was down a dirt road off Stony Hill in Amagansett. The road was bumpy as hell and the further we went, the more desolate it became. Finally I turned around. As we headed home, a sign on Accabonac Road pointed to another yard sale. We followed the signs to – you guessed it, the other side of the same winding, pothole-filled dirt road. Once again we drove for what seemed an eternity. Not a single house. I was about to turn around when a car came and the driver told us the yard sale was around the bend. There were some books for sale – big deal, you can go to the back of the East Hampton Library and take all you want, free. That was about it. “Excuse me, do you have any Louis XIV furniture?” No. “Anything from Napoleon’s bedroom?” Sorry. “Do you have a Mickey Mantle bed for sale?” ‘Fraid not. “A Gucci toaster oven? An Hermes colostomy bag?” The guy just shook his head in disgust. I bought a green plastic butter dish for a quarter. I’m convinced it will be worth a fortune some day.

A Law That Needs Rethinking Every East End community is grappling with illegal housing and the resulting influx of children into our school systems who don’t belong there. The burden on property owners is enormous; the direct costs of educating a child, and the reciprocal costs – more teachers, more classrooms, etc. deflate property values and cause an exodus as locals move to greener passages. At the same time, summer share houses continue, bringing noise and disruption to the Hamptons while filling the pockets of greedy landlords. In fact, some of them have developed lucrative businesses turning private homes into de facto hotels with a constant stream of guests checking in and quashing neighbors’ quality of life. East Hampton Town, like the others fighting a losing battle against illegal housing, has a proposal on the table to establish a rental registry that will allow the town to track which property owners are renting. On paper it is a noble idea, but we submit in practice it will turn into a disaster. The first line of defense against year-round illegal housing should be code enforcement and the school districts themselves, working in tandem. Each district should have a full time employee(s), preferably a retired detective(s), to confirm students’ addresses, check to see who owns the property, and notify authorities when unrelated children appear to share the same address. Every student is required to furnish proof of residency: matching that list against the town’s property owner database will in essence yield a registry. In other words, the data already exists to a address one part of the problem. When it comes to the summer shares, officials point to websites like Aribnb and other similar services that match short-term renters with available houses, as reasons to enact the new registry. The real solution, though, seems obvious: have code enforcers call these sites posing as would-be renters. It is, after all, their jobs. Given the solutions are already easily in our grasp, creating another level of bureaucracy and the salaries and benefits that go with it seems pointless. It took the previous administration four years to

A Roaring Success
Dear Rick, Aided by the Red Knights Chapter 25, the Fourth Annual Donald T. Sharkey Memorial Motorcycle Ride was a roaring success last Sunday on what turned out
to be a perfect day! Over 50 bikes left the Bridgehampton Fire Department at 11 AM, rode out to the Montauk Lighthouse, and then stopped at the Stephen Talkhouse to indulge in fabulous food graciously donated by The Amagansett Seafood Shop, Brent’s, Bostwicks Clam and Chowder House, Hampton Marketplace, Hampton Chutney, Fierro’s Pizza, The Meeting House, Sotto Soppra, Simply Sublime and The Smoking Wolf. We would like to thank Marc
reduce the town’s bloated payroll to a manageable level. And make no mistake about it, the recent Moody’s upgrade was based entirely on the efforts of the previous administration though current officials implied they to had a hand in it. Honest property owners, many of whom who already paid a small fortune to purchase here, will have the burden of hiring an engineer or architect to ascertain the property is suitable for renting or endure a visit by the building inspector. After jumping through those hoops, the homeowner would have to pay a fee for the privilege of letting Big Brother into their homes. Frankly, it’s ridiculous. Summer rentals have always been an important source of income for locals. When done right, it is a clean transaction – the owners move out, the renters move in. It’s really none of the town’s business as long as it’s legal and neighbors don’t complain. The solution is right in front of our eyes: aggressive code enforcement, hefty fines, a vigilant neighborhood, and a court system that adjudicates violators quickly – and administers justice harshly. Of course, the quickest way to end this problem is to evict those people living illegally. Why do authorities refuse to acknowledge this fact? By the way, this administration keeps insisting a similar law in Southampton works well. That’s nonsense. Thousands of rental properties remain unregistered years after the legislation was enacted. No one wants to tell the truth: It’s been a flop. It doesn’t work. To make honest people pay for the privilege of doing something that is their Constitutional right is probably something that won’t hold up in court. More important, the serial violators who rake in five figure monthly incomes by turning their single family houses into multiple family residences aren’t going to register, or will lie when doing so. And even with a hefty fine system in place it will become the cost of doing business. Talk is cheap. Imposing fines on violators is not the same as collecting them, and sharp lawyers often plea down a dozen or more code violations to a single slap on the wrist. The town knows where the illegal houses are. Use existing laws and close them down. We don’t need more laws; we need the guts to enforce the ones we have.
Goldberg, not only for the delicious bagels and coffee in the morning, but also for being a T-shirt sponsor along with Cyril’s Fish House, Burke and Sullivan PLLC, Goin’ Hoin’, Hampton’s Realty Group, Poxabogue Golf Center and Madison Blueprint & Copy. As a direct result of the ride, the Fund raised $3,500, which was put toward three scholarships we were proud to award to recent East Hampton High School graduates Emma Newburger, Christina
Cangiolosi and Caoimhe McKeon. The Ride went smoothly and safely thanks to the Red Knights, the East Hampton Village and Town Police Departments, and the County Park Police. We all thank you so much for your help and professionalism. A special thanks also to the Bridgehampton Fire Department for the starting place and Peter Honerkamp Continued on Page 18.

Disingenuous Statements Dear Mr. Murphy, After winning re-election, Southampton Highway Superintendent, Alex Gregor, sent a message to candidates, “Please get your junk off the side of the roads now -- the election is over.” Unfortunately at the time this message was published, billboards featuring enormous photos of Mr. Gregor were still standing along the main roads west of the canal. Fortunately for Mr. Gregor, The Southampton Press didn’t print Mr. Gregor’s message in its western edition thereby avoiding Mr. Gregor’s contradictory remarks. The message was however printed in the eastern edition (11/7/13). I’ve already explained that The Press would not publish a letter in which I questioned Alex Gregor’s use of private citizens to assist with his street drainage project west of the canal. In fact I wrote two other letters, one being a proposal to write a Viewpoint column and the other describing an inspection by a landscaper who declared Mr. Gregor’s work to be “unfortunate.” The letter referring to the landscaper’s opinion was never published, and The Press flatly declared that no one would be interested in my Viewpoint, ceasing to publish anything further from me about Mr. Gregor’s work product. And yet, The Press has published disingenuous statements by Mr. Gregor. Why the silence around Mr. Gregor? In a column published in The New York Times (“Rape and Rotherham,” 9/7/14), Conservative Ross Douthat made the observation that “. . . different forms of willful blindness can combine to frustrate justice.” He argued, “Show me what a culture prizes and I’ll tell you who is likely to get away with (exploitation).” In my opinion, in a small town,

Should Roger Goodell be penalized for his handling of the Ray Rice situation? Vicki Durand I think whether he saw the tape or not he made a very poor decision. He should have suspended Rice for much longer than two games and given him a much stiffer penalty. He needed to give a message to the world that the NFL will not tolerate domestic violence. I hope there are consequences for him. Corey Greenbaum If he did see the video several months ago then there should be consequences for both his lying about it and for giving a two game suspension as punishment for such a horrific act of domestic violence. There should be consequences for someone who has so much power in the NFL. Kathy SanFillipo If he really did view those tapes then I think his decision was terrible and Rice should have been banned from football for life. But if he hadn’t seen the tapes then I guess he handled it as well as he could have in the situation. Although even if he didn’t see the tapes I don’t think a two game suspension was sufficient. Ian Pitstick Assuming that he’s telling the truth and that he didn’t see the video until just a few days ago I don’t think Goodell should suffer any consequences. It was the first time he was faced with this kind of a situation, and we all have to be allowed to learn from our mistakes. willful blindness can take the form of unquestioned acceptance by a local newspaper of community-supported conduct perceived to involve one of their own. The real problem, it seems to me, is why Mr. Gregor asked someone who has a record of DUI’s and who doesn’t own any property to assist him with his projects. Why are civic leaders (many of whom are Democrats) silent about that? What culture do Democrats value? Hazardous streets? Drunk driving? Taking advantage of women? Deceit? It appears so. As a matter of fact, The New York Post hasn’t just written one article about one neighbor, it has published commentary pertaining to neighbors who live on all three sides of my property, as well as about Alex Gregor who is responsible for the roads. So I do have plenty to talk about. SUSAN CERWINSKI
Move Forward Dear Rick, An enigmatic event recently played out in our Hamptons. Sometime after midnight, residents of Hampton Bays were awakened by the unusual late night barking of the pet dogs outside. Upon investigating the following morning, recruiting forms were found left by the Loyal White Knights, a North Carolina,, 2012 formed branch of the Ku Klux Klan. They are anti: African American, with or without forged U.S. birth certificate, Latinos, immigrants and “Your tired, your poor . . . “ all of whom they claim “all want your country.” Why of all cultured cultures, would they choose The Hamptons to share their hatred? What ever made them think they would find sympathico among the educated, enlightened, unprejudiced, fair CONTINUED ON PAGE 19.

Obituary Joan A. (Lewandowski) Schellinger
The family of Joan A. (Lewandowski) Schellinger wishes to share the sad news that she passed away peacefully on Saturday, August 30, at the age of 78 years old. She was surrounded by family in death as she was in life. A daughter, sister, wife, mother, aunt, grandmother, great-grandmother, mother in law, and a friend. Indeed she was many things in her life, but
most of all she was a woman who cared deeply and sincerely about her family, letting them know they were the very center of her life. She was born in Bridgehampton on April 5, 1936, to Chester and Julia Lewandowski. She graduated from Bridgehampton High School with high honors and received an award for her essay about the ‘Daughters of Revolution.’ Soon after in 1954,

she married the love of her life, Stanley “Pep” Schellinger. She was preceded in death by her husband in August 2011. They would have celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on September 5, 2014. She enjoyed many hobbies such as Bingo, scratch off lottery tickets, crossword puzzles, card games, yard work, comedy TV shows, and she had a deep love for nature. She truly enjoyed devoting her young adult years to chaperoning field trips, Girl Scout meetings and watching various school sports games of her children and grandchildren. Joan also loved to volunteer her time in her community. She donated her time to the East Hampton Blood Drive for over 25 years and you may have also seen her as a greeter at the East Hampton Health Care Center, welcoming and offering assistance with a warm, caring smile to each and every one who entered the building. Joan is survived by her four children, Charles Schellinger, of Springs, Wendy Schwob, of Vero Beach, FL, Evelyn Shields, of Amagansett, and Yvonne Wood, of Springs, along with their spouses, as well as seven grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. She is also survived by two sisters and a brother, Eleanor Weber, of Connecticut, Marsha Weaver, of Florida, and Leon Lewandowski, of Colorado. She lived a rich life filled with much happiness and love and all will miss her dearly. Any of those who wish to honor her memory can do so with a gift in her name to the Springs Fire Department Ambulance Fund or the East Hampton Blood Drive.

TOBY is 1 1/2 years old and is need of a home! Toby had a home for over a year and was doing great, but was returned after new dogs were brought into the home and he started to have behavior issues- hissing and urinating out of his litter box. The issue was thought to be behavioral due to the new puppies stressing him out so unfortunately it wasn’t properly investigated for a medical problem. What we quickly found when we took Toby back was that he had a very painful condition that could have killed him had it
continued. Toby had many crystals in his urine. Within a few days of his return he could hardly urinate, cried when he peed, and he started passing blood. He was getting blocked. We immediately took him to the vet, and he was catheterized and given fluids to flush him out. He was put on a urinary tract food and is now doing great! His behavior is playful and friendly as he is feeling so much better! He doesn’t mind dogs if they are quiet and calm. As you can see here. He would prefer a calm household. Other cats ok. He is very affectionate once he knows you. He does need to stay on special food for a while and maybe forever so this doesn't recur. Adopter or foster needed! Independent / Michael Heller /East Hampton Fire Department
Volunteers fight a fire in Springs that gutted a house and left a family homeless Saturday morning.
so there were no employees or patrons present. No injuries were reported and the cause of the fire is under investigation by the county fire marshal’s office and SCPD, since Cupsogue, located at the end of Dune Road, is a county park. Just before 6 AM Monday, the Bridgehampton Fire Department was called to 850 Sagg Main Street in Sagaponack for a report of a working structure fire. First arriving units found the residence fully involved with fire, and immediately
called for mutual aid from the Sag Harbor FD for an engine and manpower and the East Hampton FD for their Rapid Intervention Team team to respond to the scene. There were no occupants in the house at the time, and the fire was extinguished without incident. The Southampton Town Fire Marshal’s office is investigating the fire’s cause and origin; yesterday it was deemed “suspicious.” Fire Prevention Week is coming up and for good reason; as the
cold weather arrives the number of house fires increases. The National Fire Prevention Association advises homeowners check all smoke detectors and replace as necessary, and have chimneys cleaned every year.

Dave Browne, East Hampton Town Fire Marshal, noted in a letter to the public, “It is important that you have your heating system inspected or serviced annually to ensure that it is in good working condition.”

SPORTS Miracle Finish For Blue Waves INDEPENDENT
By Rick Murphy
Things weren’t looking good for Riverhead. Playing their opener at home, the locals fell behind a gritty and game West Islip team 25-20 with time ticking away. The defending Class II County Champions needed a miracle, and got one – with 16 seconds left in the fray. Playing in a steady rain quarterback Kan Simco spotted Marcus Reid angling for the endzone, fighting for a smidgeon of wiggle room. Simco, under pressure, fired, and Reid snared the pass to ice the game. Earlier in the contest, Ryun Moore, the heir apparent to a long line of top-notch running backs, kept the Wave in the game. He was to rush for 139 yard on 33 carries including a two-yard first quarter run that gave Riverhead a 6-0 lead.
He scored again in the second, but West Babylon responded with 16 third quarter points to seize the lead. Simco completed 9 of 21 for 115 yards but showed pinpoint accuracy when it counted most. Smithtown East comes to town next Saturday for a 2 PM kickoff. Elsewhere, the news wasn’t as good for the other East End football teams. Westhampton Beach, giddy from an opening week romp, fell back to earth Friday night, getting blasted by Miller Place 35-3. The Hurricanes, playing in Division III go to Kings Park Saturday for a 1:30 affair. Greenport/Southold did not fare well in its Division IV opener, falling to traditional powerhouse Babylon, 35-0. Hampton Bays also faced a league powerhouse with
similar results, getting pounded by Glenn 55-20. Port Jefferson exploded for 26 second half points to dispatch Southampton/Ross 39-
13 and Bayport/Blue Point handled Mercy 33-6. Mercy travels to Southampton Saturday for a 2 PM kickoff.

MindedSports By Pete Mundo
Despite Improvement, Mets Have A Ways To Go On Sunday, the Mets were eliminated from the division race in the NL East. I’m sure you are thinking, ‘Didn’t that happen back in July?’ I was. But, on Sunday, the Mets were officially mathematically eliminated from the division race. The irony was that it was the Nationals who beat the Mets on Sunday, and after the win led the Mets by 14 games. The Nationals are on their way to a National League East title, and a 90+ win season. Meantime, Mets ownership and front office continues to be overly impressed with baby steps, and incremental improvement. The four game series against the Nationals made for a sobering weekend for Mets fans. While they have improved, it was a reminder that there is still a big mountain to climb to get to the top. The Mets have won between 70 and 79 games each of the past five seasons. As of Sunday they had 72 wins with 12 games to play, so they are likely destined for a sixth straight season with a win total in the 70s. The optimistic Met fan believes that with the addition of Matt Harvey, who’s coming off Tommy John surgery, they will automatically jump into playoff contention. The more pessimistic Mets fan believes that, even with Harvey returning, and a strong rotation, the Mets are a big bat, or two, from competing for a division crown. Count me in as agreeing with the pessimistic fan. The Mets are 22nd of 30 MLB teams in runs scored (573) and are second worst in team batting average (.237). No matter how strong their pitching is, it’s too much pressure on a staff to try and win 2-1 or 3-2 games every night. The Oakland Athletics are a perfect example of a team that traded away offense for stellar pitching (at the deadline), and they have plummeted out of the divisional race in the AL West, while trying to hang on to a Wild Card spot. The problem for the Mets is that offense is incredibly tough to come by in today’s game. Most of the top free agents this offseason are pitchers, including Jon Lester, Max Scherzer and James Shields. The bigger bats available include Nelson Cruz, Hanley Ramirez, and Torii Hunter. They all have major flaws or
play positions the Mets don’t need. The best way to improve the offense is via trade. Whatever top pitcher Sandy Alderson decides to move, as part of a package for a big bat, will be the biggest decision of his Mets tenure. I’ve always advocated for building a deal around Jacob deGrom. While I really like his make up, I believe the Mets would be “selling high” on a player that turns 27 next season. If the front
www.indyeastend.com
office really believes the pitching throughout the organization is that good, and that deep, then deGrom becomes expendable. Unfortunately, it is unlikely the Mets could get away with trading only prospects for any kind of meaningful bat. But, to catch the Nationals in the division, and the Dodgers, Giants, and Cardinals atop the National League, the Mets need more than just a bat. Improvement from their $100+ million man and captain, David Wright is necessary. He continues to get a pass because of his likeability by the fan base and ownership. But his production hasn’t been All-Star caliber since 2010. Now, in fairness, it’s always possible the optimistic Mets fan is right. They bring back Harvey
September 17, 2014 35
to head one of the best staffs in baseball, David Wright bounces back, and they get offensive growth from Travis D’Arnaud, Juan Lagares, Lucas Duda and others. But, when the Mets finished the weekend, it made them 3-13 against the Nationals this season . . . tough to find any optimism there.
