Singing Bowls Heal With Sound By Kitty Merrill

Everything is energy and energy is vibration. To understand that law of science – and spirit – is to understand how a “sound bath” from singing bowls can have a positive effect on the body. Sound healing dates back centuries. Tibetan singing bowls were found in the pyramids, some say. The bowls sound healer Maria Maier uses are crystal and the discovery of their beneficial properties came about more recently, and in an unusual way. B a c k i n t h e 19 8 0 s i n t h e burgeoning computer industry, crystal bowls were used to grow pure silicon chips for computers. If the bowls were not precise enough to craft the chips, they’d be discarded. Someone on the way to the trash bin discovered they produce an incredible sound and the singing crystal bowl industry was born. Maier came upon her first singing bowl in a similarly coincidental way. She had never heard of sound healing until four

years ago when she attended a Reiki conference in Setauket. “That’s the first time I heard the bowls,” she recalled. “I loved them, but I never thought I’d be doing this.” Meditating one day, she saw a bowl in her mind’s eye. The next day she saw one on her computer screen. “This little purple bowl popped up on my screen. It was on eBay. I’d never bought anything on eBay and called my daughter to ask how.” Maier believes she was led to the bowl by spirit. From there she started buying more bowls and learning how to play them, receiving instruction at the Sage Academy of Sound Energy at the famed Menla Mountain Retreat upstate in the Catskills. “You drag a rubber tipped striker around the outer part of the bowl to make the sound and let it resonate. It’s not really hard to do,” she explained. The note produced by a singing bowl is dependent upon the diameter of the instrument. So,

SAVE ON PRODUCTS THAT MAKE PROJECTS EASIER

too, is the vibration. The bigger they are, the longer they resonate. Maier likes to follow an ayurvedic scale, with different notes corresponding to different energy centers, or chakras, in the body. The ancient Greek philosopher and mathematician Pythagoras also created a musical scale that pairs notes with parts of the body. “I like his scale because the notes are soothing and pleasant. G and C together are very calming on the nervous system.” The body has a natural affinity with crystal, Maier explained. Both the sound of the bowls and their structure can “entrain,” or synchronize, with a person’s energy to lift and heal. Skeptical? According to an article on the website selfgrowth. com by Crystal Vibrations music label founder Elivia Melodey, oncologist and author of The Healing Power of Sound Dr. Mitchell Gaynor used alternative medicine, sound therapy and healing modalities such as chanting with his patients for years. He said, “If we accept that sound is vibration and we know

Independent / Kitty Merrill

that vibration touches ever y part of our physical being, then we understand that sound is heard not only through our ears but through every cell in our bodies. One reason sound heals on a physical level is because it so deeply touches and transforms us on the emotional and spiritual planes. Sound can redress imbalances on every level of physiologic functioning and can play a positive role in the treatment of virtually any medical disorder.” Continued on Page 30.

THE LAST THING YOU NEED TO READ ABOUT THE PRESIDENTIAL ELECTION MONDAY, SEPT. 26, 2016 - 3 PM: I trust a lot of people, and somewhere near the top of the list of people I trust are my bookies. Bookies have to be as honest as Andrew Cuomo because, in the end, their business depends on it. Plus, the odds are always stacked in their favor and in the end they always win, so why should they take a chance on losing my trust and their reputation? In the past I had a bookie who, when my inability to do simple arithmetic caused me to shortchange myself, would call and tell me, “You overpaid me by $30. I will credit you on your next bet.” Sadly, this same wonderful bookie disappeared without a trace one day in 1987 (when, I must admit, I owed him $160) and he was never heard from again. My guess is that he was hopefully (for his sake) very dead when he was put into the trunk of his 1987 Cadillac for some mob infraction.

Then, as was the tradition in my old neighborhood, said Cadillac was put into an auto junkyard compactor, and today the Cadillac and my dead bookie are compacted into a hunk of metal the size of your cell phone that rests as an ornament on some mobster’s coffee table. These days I bet online with a group from, I think, Costa Rica. It could be Ecuador. All I know is when I sometimes call in a bet the person on the other end of the phone has a Hispanic accent that would make Donald Trump vomit all over himself. When I win, their New York representative pays me off. When I lose, their New York representative collects. They are completely honest. It’s all on the up-and-up. But speaking of Donald Trump, why am I rambling on about dead and live bookies? Because when it comes to this election, I think a lot of Democrats are playing a game to see how frightened they can make

themselves. These days, when you go up to a Democrat – or even some clearthinking Republicans who are anti-Trump – they have a nervous tremor in their hands and they stutter-whisper, “I-i-i-t looooks l-ii-ike i-i-it’s gggoing tooo ba be ba be ca-ca close. Tttttttrump may wawa-wa win.” So to prove them wrong I’ve gone to the only people I trust when it comes to politics. No, not political pundits like George Will. No, not Jeff Greenfield. No, not John Podhoretz. No, definitely not the New York Times. I’ve gone to the people who have the most money to lose should they get this election wrong – the bookies. I am writing this column at 3 PM on Monday. As of now, if I want to win $100 on Hillary I have to risk $200. If I make a $100 bet on Donald Trump and he wins, I will get a return of $168. So, with all the fears about Hillary losing, she’s a big favorite with the bookies. Speaking of a big return for your money: You can bet $100 on Joe Biden to win this election with my bookie today, and let’s say that tonight Hillary starts coughing at the beginning of the debate and she doesn’t stop coughing until Columbus Day, and she gives up running and turns the election over to Joe Biden and he wins. For a $100 bet you make on Biden today, my bookie will return $9,000 to you. So what I plan to do is see how tonight’s debate will affect the odds. My guess is unless Trump farts out loud during the debate and gets caught blaming Hillary or the

IN THE NEWS

moderator, all he has to do is show up and the odds on Hillary winning and Trump losing should change in his favor. This should tell us who the winner of tonight’s debate really is, without the usual spin. I will return to this column tomorrow morning. TUESDAY, SEPT. 27, 2016 - 11:30 AM: I’m on deadline. Donald Trump blew it. His behavior at the debate last night reminded me of an old joke: It seems a visitor is walking on the grounds of an insane asylum and a patient sitting on a bench summons him. The visitor sits next to the man and they start talking. The patient tells the man that he has no idea why he’s been confined to the asylum. He is rational. He is charming. He is intelligent. The two men have a long discussion and it’s clear the patient is calm, and he makes a great case as to why his confinement is a mistake. Finally the visitor says, “My God, you are as sane as I am. When I leave I’m going to do everything in my power to see that you are released.” They shake hands. The visitor walks away and when he is a few feet away from the patient he is struck on the back of the head with a large rock. The blow from the rock knocks him down and his head is bleeding and he’s dazed and he looks up at the patient who says, “That’s so you don’t forget.” Donald Trump was sane for the first 20 minutes of last night’s debate, and he was scoring points with the country, when he suddenly lost it. For the next hour and a half he was a snorting, sniveling, screaming bully, interrupting and talking out of his head, blaming everyone – including Rosie O’Donnell – for his woes. I’ve gone back this morning to see how his creepy performance affected my Costa Rican bookie’s betting line, which is the most accurate way to see who won the debate. Big difference. Hillary rules. Yesterday if you wanted to win $100 on Hillary, you had to risk $200. Today, after the debate, if you want to win $100 on Hillary, you have to risk $285. As for Donald, yesterday a winning bet of $100 would bring you $168. Today a $100 winning Trump bet has a payoff of $230, which shows that after the debate, the bookies are saying he doesn’t have a chance. The bookies know. The bookies always know. Greenvale, New York, on May 11, 1923 to the late Michael Grella and former Vincenza Petruzzello, both of Sturno, Italy. Mr. Grella grew up in Greenvale and attended Roslyn High School. After high school, he worked for Columbia Aircraft Corporation, a manufacturer of military amphibian aircraft. Mr. Grella enlisted with the Marines on January 13, 1943. He was very proud to have served his country in the 4th Marine division, part of the V Amphibious Corps commanded by “Howlin’ Mad” Smith during World War II. He was a veteran of the South Pacific invasions of Kwajalain in the Marshall Islands, Roi-Namur, Saipan, Tiniam and his last combat assignment on Iwo Jima. Mr. Grella was a designated rifle sharpshooter. While in combat on Iwo Jima, he sustained a head wound from artillery shrapnel. It was on Iwo Jima where he earned his Purple Heart. He said of his combat duty, “The toughest battle was Iwo Jima, where the volcanic ash beach made it impossible to dig in.” While still overseas in the South Pacific, “Lefty” as he was known in his athletic career, received a baseball contract with the Johnstown Johnnies, the minor league team affiliated with the New York Giants. This was his dream.

Mr. Grella is preceded in death by his wife, Alma, and step-son Robert Colton and is survived by his son, Gary Grella of Melbourne, Florida, daughter, Patrice Zaborski, son-in-law, James Zaborski and granddaughter, Jaclyn Zaborski of East Hampton. A Message from Hampton Septic Services When it comes to Septic Systems most homeowners take the “Out of Sight Out of Mind” approach. If you don’t see it, you don’t have any nasty odors and septic backing up then why have it serviced? This way of thinking can cost you a lot of time and even more money! At Hamptons Septic Services OUR approach is to be Proactive rather than Reactive. More often than not, new customers contact us because their Septic System is failing at which point it becomes very difficult to control. Signs that your Septic System is failing can come in the form of simultaneously slow drainage and/or water backing up in tubs, sinks, toilets, washing machines, unusual gurgling sounds when running water, increasingly unpleasant odors in and around the house, discoloring and softening of your lawn, and depressions in the soil around the system. The good news is YES, IT IS POSSIBLE to prevent septic back-ups! Our customers receive recommended routine maintenance pumping which allows proper functionality of their septic systems preventing the unknown.

understandIng your sePtIc system: The components of modern septic systems are a house sewer drain, a septic tank, a cesspool, and the soil absorption field.

Some older homes have only a cesspool ring acting as the primary Septic Tank which then leaches directly to the soil. When you run water or flush a toilet the discharge from the drain is first collected by the Septic Tank. The Septic Tank is designed to separate waste, solids sink to the bottom forming the sludge layer and the lighter solids such as grease rise to the surface forming the scum layer. Between the solid and scum layers is the waste water layer which will eventually drain to the Cesspool where it then slowly leaches out into the ground to be biologically treated by the soil. common sePtIc system Issues: After the Septic Tank separates waste, the solids that remain in the tank are meant to break down over time, but often the rate of solid accumulation exceeds the rate of the breakdown causing the solids to overflow to the cesspool and ground, eventually causing backup of septic in the yard or house. Frequent removal and pumping of the solids in the Septic Tank will prevent system back-ups. Other reasons for poor drainage of your system could be frequent rainfall, or close proximity to beaches and oceans where the water tables are higher. In this case your system capacity may need to be increased by adding additional Cesspools.

the more you know...the more you save how often should I PumP my sePtIc tank: There are many variables which will determine how often you should have your system pumped. The New York State Department of Health recommends having your system, pumped out every two to three years. If you have a garbage disposal, live close to a body of water, have a smaller or older septic system then you may want to have it pumped more frequently. I have no Idea where to fInd my sePtIc tank, can you locate It? Yes! We can locate your septic system using many techniques. We recommend locating your system prior to needing it serviced. If you wait to locate your system in an emergency it can become very messy and costly. what should not go Into the sePtIc system? Septic systems are designed to treat domestic waste water produced from routine activities such as bathing, toilets, dishwashers and washing machines. Do not drain or flush harsh chemicals, paint, solvents, paint cleaners and degreasers, and pesticides. Refrain from disposing of latex products, feminine hygiene products, baby or personal wipes and any other dense waste.

Mental Health Awareness National Mental Health Awareness Week begins Sunday and runs through Saturday, October 8. Across Long Island there are events meant to provide information and promote the truth that understanding mental health issues is important to everyone. To see what’s going on across Long Island check this website: www.mhaweek.org On the South Fork the Towns of Southampton and East Hampton are collaborating to offer a free film with discussion and refreshments to follow at The Hampton Librar y in Bridgehampton on Monday at 7:30 PM. The film No Kidding, Me 2! is by Joe Pantoliano of “The Sopranos,” Memento, and The Matrix. He made this documentary directorial debut as part of his fight against the stigma and shame of mental/brain “dis-ease.” Nearly 100 million Americans suffer in isolation. In this film, Pantoliano’s candid and humorous discussions with his family shed light on their struggles with his clinical depression. The film also includes compelling stories of a brain surgeon with bipolar disorder, a psychologist with ADHD, and three high school students managing bipolar disorder and clinical depression. Each discusses their struggles before they were diagnosed including attempts at self-medication and other destructive behaviors. Hope and encouragement are discovered when, managing their own recovery, they realize they are not alone. Later in the week Southampton Town seniors will be treated to a dose of laughs with Susan Dingle a local playwright, poet and therapist, who will share her stories of facing senior citizenship and its mental health challenges. At the Hampton Bays Community Center on Ponqugue Avenue Wednesday, Oct. 5, at 11 AM.

Obamacare At A Crossroads

By Rick Murphy

The fate of the Patient Protection Affordable Care Act is precarious at best. If Republicans take over the White House, consider it gone. But even Democrats, who by a

two to one margin say they favor Obamacare, as it has come to be called, admit privately the system must change drastically if it is to survive. The goals were indeed noble when Congress passed the ACA

bill in 2010: give more Americans access to affordable, quality health insurance and reduce the growth of health care spending. The Affordable Care Act intended to expand the affordability, quality, and availability of private and public health insurance through consumer protections, regulations, subsidies, taxes, insurance exchanges, and other reforms. Those who claim Obamacare has been a complete disaster are either misinformed or engaging in wishful thinking: new data released this month confirms what the administration has been telling us all along: the number of uninsured has decreased in every state in the country. On the other hand the increase has been smaller than expected: there are almost 30 million uninsured Americans as of this writing. When White House press secretary Josh Earnest tweeted, “What is clear is that the vast majority of people all across the country will have access to a plan that costs $75 a month or less” he was villainized by the press and opponents of Obamacare. Yet he chose his words carefully: his statement is actually true; though the quality of the plans in that price range is a subject the administration is glad to avoid discussing.

Feel The Pinch The other elephant in the room is the federal subsidies to the ACA that make it viable. Critics have always predicted the middle class would end up paying for those who couldn’t afford health insurance, and by and large that is exactly what is happening by hook or by crook, regardless of how the administration tries to spin the numbers. That’s because the government is prepared to lay out billions of dollars in subsidies to help people purchase insurance they otherwise couldn’t afford and the money has to come from somewhere – sooner or later taxpayers feel the pinch. The plan was to offset a lot of the expenditures by creating an open, competitive marketplace that would drive down the cost of health insurance premiums. That hasn’t worked, and the exchanges, which the government funded to create this open market, are going under. Obamacare is at an all-time low as far as public opinion goes. That means in an election year even the most stalwart of party loyalists are reaching across the aisle to cut a deal. Senator Tom Carper of Delaware, a Democrat noted the “three Rs” (risk adjustment, reinsurance, and CONTINUED ON B-8.

IRS Targeting Obamacare Holdouts By Rick Murphy

The Obama administration has directed the IRS to contact as many as 20 million taxpayers who opted to pay a penalty instead of purchasing health insurance. Though officials said the move is merely an attempt at “reaching out” to potential purchasers of Obamacare -particularly younger citizens - critics claim it’s yet another attempt by the current administration to bully citizens who do not agree with its ideological standpoint. “We strongly object to any action by the Administration to improperly use sensitive taxpayer information to identify and harass individuals who have rejected the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (ACA) by choosing to pay a tax rather than be forced into a health care plan they don’t need and don’t want,” House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy, Majority Whip Steve Scalise, and Ways & Means Chairman wrote in a letter to IRS Commissioner John Koskinen. Meanwhile, Congress continues to investigate the use of the IRS by the Obama administration to examine tax returns filed by tax-exempt organizations politically opposed to the current administration. Internal Revenue Service Commissioner John Koskinen is squarely in the crosshairs; the House Committee of the Judiciary wants to remove him from office. I n f a c t , “t h e a l l e g a t i o n s of misconduct and articles of impeachment” filed against Koskinen is before the committee now. Representative Bob Goodlatte (D., Virginia) called the tax-exempt organization targeting scandal

“nothing short of shocking” and a “political plan to silence the voices of groups representing millions of Americans.” The auditing tactics were particularly prevalent for organizations with ties to the Tea Party. Goodlatte said the allegations of misconduct against Koskinen a re se ri o us: “O n his watc h, volumes of information crucial to the investigation into the IRS targeting scandal were destroyed” and “Congressional demands, including subpoenas . . . went unanswered.” As reported elsewhere in this section, Obamacare is at a crossroads because many young, healthy working Americans have declined to purchase health insurance, opting instead to pay a penalty. That leaves HMOs with an overabundance of older customers who are more likely to get sick. Thus, rates are skyrocketing. Chris Condeluci, the owner of CC Law & Policy, a legal and policy practice that focuses on issues relating to the Affordable Care Act, recently testified before the House Ways and Means Committee. He said only 28 percent of

Americans between the ages of 18 and 34 are enrolled in Obamacare; the numbers would have to rise to at least 40 percent to insure a balanced risk pool. About 8 million people paid a penalty in lieu of insurance, but more than 12 million people claimed an exemption from the penalty tax and paid nothing at all. Condeluci said people who “game the system” are ultimately going to cause the demise of Obamacare. “A larger percentage of high-risk

individuals have entered the market than was originally anticipated, due in large part to enrollment during special enrollment periods,” he said. “They used their insurance to cover a variety of ailments and then left the system without paying enough premiums to cover the cost.” Condeluci said this practice “Is one of the root causes for the significant losses experienced by a majority of the insurance carriers participating in the new marketplaces.”

Obamacare Lawsuits Abound By Rick Murphy

Obamacare is one of the most controversial laws ever passed, but there is no debate about one result of the Affordable Health Care Act – lawyers are getting rich. That’s because, simply put, almost everyone is suing everyone else. Thirty six states have been involved in litigation with the federal government over the ACA at one time or another. Six more states filed a new lawsuit against the Obama administration earlier this month. The latest complaint filed jointly by Texas, Wisconsin, Kansas, Louisiana, Indiana, and Nebraska in the Northern District of Texas challenges the Health Insurance Providers Fee assessed to health insurers to cover federal subsidies. The lawsuit maintains nothing in the Affordable Care Act’s language provided clear notice that states would have to pay the fee. The suit seeks an injunction and also asks that states be refunded for what they’ve already paid. Meanwhile several HMOs associated with Obamacare are suing. Health Republic Insurance Co. has filed a $2.5 billion classaction lawsuit against the federal

government over the ACA’s risk corridor program, which was supposed to limit losses. Instead the risk corridor program was seriously underfunded and has lost $2.5 billion so far. In its lawsuit Health Republic alleges the shortfall in 2014 caused financial distress for some insurers and put others out of business. In October, Health Republic announced it would not offer health plans in 2016. Health Republic claims insurers participating in the risk corridor program will incur even greater losses in the future. “If not remedied, this paradigm will require insurers to sharply raise their rates and decrease benefits to protect against potential losses from this new risk pool that needs more time to stabilize, resulting in much higher costs to American taxpayers in the long run than the temporary risk corridor program itself, seemingly for perceived political gain,” wrote Health Republic in its complaint. Within a three-week span last summer, four of the five biggest health insurers announced two mergers totaling $85 billion to ostensibly help them better cope with Obamacare mandates. But United States Attorney

General Loretta Lynch quickly filed lawsuits to block the deals, which were between Aetna and Humana and Anthem and Cigna. The proposed mergers, she said, “would leave much of the multitrillion-dollar health insurance industry in the hands of three mammoth insurance companies.” “If these mergers were to take place, the competition among insurers that has pushed them to provide lower premiums, higherquality care and better benefits would be eliminated,” she said. The companies responded by vowing to fight the government’s challenge. Aetna, which had hoped to gain an advantage by being the first to reach a deal, aggressively defended its proposed merger, which it contended was different from the larger Anthem-Cigna deal that followed. “I like my chances in front of

a judge,” Mark T. Bertolini, chief executive of Aetna, told Forbes magazine. In a statement, Anthem said the Justice Department’s action is based on “a flawed analysis and misunderstanding of the dynamic, competitive and highly regulated healthcare landscape and is inconsistent with the way that the DOJ has reviewed past healthcare transactions,” according to court papers. Aetna didn’t take long to exact its revenge. The company has pulled out of Obamacare in all but a handful of states.

Green Tax Credits Available

By Miles X. Logan

The New York State Department of Taxation and Finance, along with the New York State Energy Research and Development

Authority (NYSERDA) released a list of multiple tax credits available for “going green” last week. Special emphasis was placed on conserving energy and reducing

carbon emissions in honor of Climate Week NYC. New York State has developed innovative methods to transform the way energy is generated and delivered. Governor Cuomo’s Reforming the Energy Vision (REV) strategy is building an energy system designed to be effective and affordable. A key component to meet climate goals and reduce emissions 40 percent by 2030 is the Clean Energy Standard, which requires 50 percent of all electricity used in the state to come from renewable energy resources, such as solar and wind, by 2030. “These tax breaks continue

to build on the momentum of Governor Cuomo’s multi-faceted environmental initiatives,” said Nonie Manion, Acting Commissioner of Taxation and Finance. “With more New Yorkers taking advantage of these valuable incentives, they’re helping to preserve the environment for future generations.” “State tax credits are effective and critical components of Governor Cuomo’s nation-leading REV to create an energy system that’s resilient and affordable for all New Yorkers,” said John B. Rhodes, President and CEO, New York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA). “Tax credits provide homeowners with opportunities to choose solar or wind energy by making them more affordable.” New Yorkers are eligible to claim the solar energy system equipment credit if they’ve purchased solar energy equipment, leased the equipment, or have agreed to purchase energy produced by a solar energy system for at least 10 years. The credit is equal to 25 percent of the expenses related to the qualified solar energy system and is limited to $5,000. There are also alternative fuels and electric vehicle recharging credits available. Property owners and businesses can claim a credit worth up to $5000 for investing in electric vehicles or by buying property to house charging equipment. For Tax Year 2014, nearly 26,000 environmentally conscious New Yorkers claimed $23 million in credits for these programs. One of Governor Cuomo’s environmental initiatives, NY-Sun, is working to move the state closer to a sustainable, self-sufficient solar industry. Solar energy installations in New York State increased 575 percent between 2012 and 2015 and strong demand continues. New York State now ranks fourth in the number of people employed in the solar industry and fifth in total annual solar installations, up from ninth in 2013.

By Rick Murphy

RICK’S SPACE Today I Am A Man Next week is the anniversary of the day I became a man. It was a national work moratorium to protest the Vietnam War and I decided it was high time I became involved in the Peace Movement. A month later a half million of us marched on Washington. I am not Jewish, though I wish I were. I had a lot of Jewish friends in Brooklyn, and some of their Bar Mitzvahs were unbelievably extravagant. For those heathens out there who don’t know, the boy says, “Today I am a man,” at his Bar Mitzvah and then gets lavished with presents, sometimes including large sums of money. Contrast that with the Catholic version, Confirmation – I got a St. Christopher’s medal. Big deal. The 1969 event was an antiV i e t n a m Wa r p r o t e s t c a l l e d Moratorium March On Washington. The press and TV networks reported that up to 500,000 people were there; trust me, there were easily twice as many. I realized about halfway through how dangerous things were. On the march from the Lincoln Memorial to the Pentagon there were agitators in the front of the line openly urging violence, suggesting we take over government buildings, attack “the pigs” and so on.

Wholesale 725-9087 Retail 725-9004

I realized right away they weren’t really SDS (Students For A Democratic Society) as was said but were instead government agents of some kind. It was later confirmed they were CIA operatives looking to turn this peaceful thing ugly. Why? It’s what they do. I saw a bunch of armed soldiers and tanks hidden in a courtyard, behind a parking lot. And then more behind another building. I saw what appeared to be gunmen on the roofs. People don’t realize what a different world it was back then. A mob of angry protestors seizes the three television network headquarters and takes control of the Capitol Building and it’s a revolution. It worked in Cuba. Earlier that day hundreds of thousands of people stood on the grounds of the Lincoln Memorial. Dr. Benjamin Spock, the author of baby books, was the most famous speaker. I could never figure that one out – you want a revolution, you get an old bald guy who writes books about how to raise kids. No wonder we were all there putting our lives at risk – our parents listened to him. The other thing I remember is Pete Seeger sang protest songs. Pete Seeger sings protest songs at

every protest. His most famous are songs about keeping the Hudson River clean – that didn’t work out too well. He should have written a protest song about how I got a lousy St. Christopher medal while my friend Howie Levine got 20 large from his uncle the movie producer. That night my fellow protesters and I went to see Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid. I realized I was seeing life through a different lens, the images of the day stamped in my mind. I understood myself and my fellow marchers were ideologues, free thinkers, freed from the chains of religion and the mores of the day. I was different. Yes, that’s when I saw Robert Redford for the first time and realized I was gay. Naw, just kidding. I did like Katherine Ross, though, and I would have done a lot more than just take her on a bike ride -- but that’s a story for another day. Radicalized, I tried to join the SDS but no one ever returned my calls. Imagine if Castro ran his revolution that way. On May 4, 1970, four innocent students at Kent State University - they weren’t even protesting anything - were shot dead by the National Guard. The madness had reached its zenith and reality set in – there had been too many young Americans killed because of this Vietnam

thing, and now our kids on college campuses at home weren’t even safe. Redford is pretty wrinkled and gnarly these days but still damn good looking – for a guy, that is. Castro still threatens to pitch in the major leagues during rare lucid moments. He has a beard like an old hippie. Seeger drowned in the polluted Hudson River in 2014 at the age of 95. OK, I made that up. Ross is 76 and has been married five times but never to me. She must think I’m gay or somethin’. People are getting gunned down in our streets. If real change doesn’t happen, and quickly, the American people will rise again. It’s what we do.

President Obama, when he proposed the ACA legislation, included a public option – a government-run insurance company that in theory would keep private HMOs from raising rates too much. in temperature from the hot and muggy summer to the cooler and cozier fall, especially when out riding. Along with the weather changing, so has the traffic, which has opened up some areas for my horse and I to go. This week’s adventure led us to the town of Watermill where my horse was not too sure whether the windmill or the brick sidewalk would eat him first. Along the way, the presence of deer was much more noticeable in back yards and fields which were once filled with families enjoying their time together. My riding partner and I did get a little hungry along the way, stopping at a Hamptons institution, the Halsey farm stand. There we picked up some food and were wonderfully surprised when we were given a bunch of carrots for our horses to enjoy.

Third grader Lily Alison was named the student of the week in her class at Springs School. Congratulations, Lily.

Education meeting, she stated, “I am pleased that our middle school students wrote letters to the 53 veterans who will be participating in the Honor Flight. I’d like to thank Mr. Stratemeier for bringing this trip to our attention and our students and staff for honoring our veterans by participating in this worthwhile campaign.” Each year Riverhead Middle School students participate in the local Patriot Pen Essay Contest by submitting essays on patriotism. For the Honor Flight program, approximately 400 Riverhead Middle School eighth grade students wrote letters, cards, and postcards during their social studies class to one of the WWII veterans who will participate in this trip. “These veterans just love to get these cards and letters,” noted Col. Stratemeier. “They didn’t have the internet, email or Skype back then. The soldiers depended on the mail for their connection to home. Mail call was a very important event Continued on Page 21.

and getting your cards and letters during the Honor Flight mail call takes them right back to that. Thank you so much for doing this.” Eighth grader Michael Penchak wrote, “I would like to thank you for your courage and bravery. If it wasn’t for you, we would have no freedom.” At the conclusion of the Honor Flight, Col. Stratemeier stated, thousands of people will go to the airport to welcome home again these vets, most of whom are in their 90s, as an effort to thank them for their service. Erika’s message, which was addressed to WWII veteran Herbert Albert, summarized her thanks to Mr. Albert and to all our veterans. “My name is Erika,” she wrote. “I’m in 8th grade and I would like to say thank you for fighting for our freedom . . . You should be very honored because what you did for us was very big! Thank you so much.”

You are in danger of losing your home. If you fail to respond to the Summons and Complaint in this foreclosure action, you may lose your home. Please read the Summons and Complaint carefully. You should immediately contact an attorney or your local legal aid office to obtain advice on how to protect yourself. SOURCES OF INFORMATION AND ASSISTANCE The State encourages you to become informed about your options in foreclosure. In addition to seeking assistance from an attorney or legal aid, there are government agencies, and non-profit organizations that you may contact for information about possible options, including trying to work with your lender during this process. To locate an entity near you, you may call the toll-free helpline maintained by New York State Department of Financial Services’ at 1-800-269-0990 or visit the Department’s website at http://www.dfs.ny.gov FORECLOSURE RESCUE SCAMS Be careful of people who approach you with offers to “save” your home. There are individuals who watch for notices of foreclosure actions in order to unfairly profit from a homeowner’s distress. You should be extremely careful about any such promises and any suggestions that you pay them a fee or sign over your deed. State law requires anyone offering such services for profit to enter into a contract which fully describes the services they will perform and fees they will charge, and which prohibits them from taking any money from you until they have completed all such promised services. Section 1303 NOTICE YOU ARE IN DANGER OF LOSING YOUR HOME If you do not respond to this Summons and Complaint by serving the copy of the answer on the attorney for the mortgage company who filed this foreclosure proceeding against you and filing the answer with the court, a default judgment may be entered and you may lose your home. What are we doing to our children? Does the trend toward protecting their precarious self-esteem help or hurt? Consider this: a local elementary school is hosting class elections, presumably in keeping with the national news. One youthful candidate made cupcakes, which the child’s mom frosted with an inscription along the lines of “vote for Johnny.” Proud, they posted their creation on social media. The next morning, the calls started. The school principal called the mom explaining there were “children in tears” because they didn’t have access to making their own cupcakes. Parents were up in arms. The young candidate’s act was unfair and the post should be removed from Facebook. Seriously? Rampant drug use. A heroin epidemic. Teenage pregnancy. Unprecedented cruel acts of bullying. School shootings. Toxic water. Poverty. Cuts to social services for families . . . All these things are impacting schools and children across the nation and this educator feels the need to focus her time on cupcakes? Talk about living in a bubble. The principal lectured the parent on the importance of ensuring a “level playing field” during class elections; cupcakes aren’t fair. Neither is life. When do we teach that fact to our children? When do they learn there is room for competition? A life in “the bubble” with the playing field manipulated to “protect” kids from the heartbreak of losing – an election, a trophy – creates a false sense of entitlement that’s doomed to be shattered. Eventually our coddled children will learn the lesson. But unfortunately for those playing on the manipulated field, that lesson may not come until the day they finally hear “no.” For some kids the bubble doesn’t burst until the college application process and they’re denied admission to their first choice school. Suddenly, they confront the notion of competition and after years of happily navigating that playing field, they learn it’s not so level after all.

By agreeing to vote for background checks for people who want to buy a firearm, she’s shown she is devoted to our future and our safety. And, she has the common sense to want to prevent people who are deemed by the FBI too dangerous to fly from purchasing a gun. Lee Zeldin, however, has run a campaign based on his own self-interest, and not those of the people of Long Island. He claims to be a family man, yet has voted against protecting our children from guns just like the one that massacred twenty

Were you surprised by the Brangelina divorce?

Bella Correia I wasn’t very surprised to hear the news because I don’t think celebrity marriages last that long. And they’ve had such up and downs in their lives and marriage. While it seemed like a great romance you have to put that appearance out there if you’re in Hollywood.

November 8th and vote Anna Throne-Holst for Congress. JEANNE FRANKL

Doublecrossed Women Dear Ms. Merrill, During her tenure as Supervisor, Anna Throne-Holst, who is running for Congress on the Democrat Party line, limited public speaking times to three minutes and recommended that an armed guard be present at town board meetings. Phil Keith, who ran in the Republican primary on the Conservative line, commented that those ideas weren’t overly disturbing since unwieldy meetings could deprive everyone of a fair chance to be heard. Mr. Keith’s argument has merit. If a speaker decides to throw a tomato, then police intervention is justified. However, in my opinion an effective manager doesn’t need a police to limit speech. More disturbing is the fact that Ms. Throne-Holst doesn’t appear to be able to deal with women who challenge her, a failing that I believe would not serve her well in Congress where most if not all women are strong-willed knowledgeable achievers. As proof, by all accounts Ms. ThroneHolst has double-crossed three of her woman colleagues on the town board and seriously angered a fourth. Ms. Throne-Holst diverts attention from her practice by alleging to support “underserved” women. While under-served women do deserve support, all women deserve civil protections not just those whom Ms. Throne-Holst picks and chooses. SUSAN CERWINSKI

Ironic Twist Dear Editor, Such irony! Hofstra pioneered this nation’s “first birth control and women’s reproductive rights club” New York Times - March 27, 1966. Dani Perodin It’s sad. Celebrity marriages are hard because you’re always in the public eye and under a spotlight. I heard Angelina is seeking custody but I think that with all those children there should be shared custody because the kids love and need both parents. Charlene Myers I guess it was bound to happen sooner or later. That’s Hollywood. So much of what the public sees is just for the cameras. I think he’s probably a nice guy and a good dad so I hope she agrees to share custody of all those children. Katherine Helm I don’t pay much attention to celebrity gossip. I wish that wasn’t considered such big news. The elections are happening. The debates. I’d love to hear people talking about that more. People get divorced every day. Who cares? It’s personal business.

On this historic occasion, we of East End NOW (National Organization for Women) and of the Pro-Choice League, congratulate and wish luck to Hillary Clinton for being a champion of women’s reproductive rights against Donald Trump, who would destroy such freedoms. Indeed, Trump has pledged repeatedly to defund Planned Parenthood and to “punish women who have abortions.” Also on March 27, 1966. Students ought to have this kind of information. Often they do not get it at home, and they don’t get it officially at school.” In this debate, someone should ask: Why would Donald Trump negate a women’s reproductive rights? The Republican Party’s official position is that “personhood begins at conception.” This position would outlaw almost all methods of birth control, including the IUD, the pill, RU486, etc. At the debates, this issue must be raised. Laube Runs Wild As Hurricanes Win Again By Rick Murphy

East End football players don’t normally draw the attention of major college recruiters. That’s about to change. Dylan Laube, say hello to the big time. If the Westhampton junior running back wasn’t already on the radar after last week’s scintillating 307-yard rushing performance, he surely is after Friday night. The Hurricanes upended top seeded East Islip at home 32-17 to move to the top of Division III with a 3-0 mark as Laube continued his unrelenting march on the record books. He opened the scoring with a 62yard blast and took off on a 69-yard scamper in the second. Laube scored through the air in the third, hooking up with quarterback Tristan Hogan on a 33yard pass to give the home team a 25-point edge. After East Islip, now 2-1, scored in the fourth, Laube, predictably, put the icing on the cake, exploding through the line for a 40-yard TD run. That’s 12 touchdowns on the young season, and his 292 rushing yards put Laube at 807 for the season.

Laube, also a top-notch defensive back, has options – he is also a first rate lacrosse player. At 5 foot, 11-inches and a solid 180 pounds, Laube is quickly approaching the ideal size for a collegiate running back. He has been timed in 4.56 seconds for a 40yard dash and he looked a lot faster than that on the field Friday night. Laube will look to continue his assault on the record books when Westhampton hits the road Friday with a trip to Islip. Kickoff is 7 PM. Alas, the rest of the local high school football teams didn’t enjoy the same success. The combined North Fork schools of Greenport, Mattituck, and Southold suffered their first loss of the season, getting manhandled by Babylon 45-8 in Division IV action. It was the first loss of the year for the Tuckers (2-0); Babylon is in first place with a 3-0 mark. The North Fork plays at East Hampton Saturday at 2 PM.

FANTASY SP By Skippy Brown

RTS

Solving The DFS Riddle Now that the smoke has cleared, and Daily Fantasy Sports is again legal in New York State, it’s important to realize why the state attorney general wanted to regulate the game. Despite our denials, despite the fact that we railed against the legal maneuvers, it’s important to realize the legal action was taken to protect the public – us! All of us were dazzled by the huge payouts available on Fan Duel and Draft Kings. Some of us even won big tournaments. But like everything, it

was too good to be true. DFS was taken over by sharpies, by professional gamblers, and those of us who love the sport, however good we are at playing, were simply no match. New regulations have leveled the playing field to a certain extent, but you need to know how to pick your spots if you are to survive in today’s DFS. First, you must understand how the professionals win so often. First, they have huge bankrolls – some play as much as $50,000 a week.

REAL ESTATE

ARTS & ENTERTAINMENT

That allows them to take advantage of sophisticated computer models designed to maximize their chances of winning big tournaments. The most popular method is called scripting. Let’s say for the sake of simplicity that there is a $1 million prize in an NFL league and 100,000 entries, each of which costs $10. This is not a numbers game where every entry has an equal chance. It is a game of skill; we identify which players are going to put up the best fantasy numbers. For example, there is about a 90 percent chance the top rated quarterback in any given week will outscore the lowest. There are probably five or six quarterbacks, though, who could have equal or better weeks. This is true for every position. Scripting is a computer model that

identifies those players, and then charts out a predetermined number of lineups with statistically the best chance of finishing with the highest point total. It may cost, say, $30,000 – 30 percent of the entries -- but the algorithm tells you your chance of nailing the $1 million prize is much higher. The professionals can and do play these odds, and they have the bankroll to do it even if the model doesn’t work for a month or two. They know eventually they will make money. Here’s how to win in today’s DFS: Forget becoming an instant millionaire. Sure, take your best shot in a $5 game once in a while. But when playing regularly, enter tournaments that allow one entry per person. There are plenty of those leagues on Yahoo. They level the playing field. It’s a true measure of how well you play –if you can’t at least break even it means you shouldn’t be playing for money. In that event, Draft Kings and Fan Duel have agreed to offer free games. That way, you get the thrill of the fight without having to spend the mortgage money. And they still offer a cash prize to the winner. Don’t play head-to-head with same person unless you regularly win. If you get “invited” to a oneon-one game it’s usually from a player who’s been watching you and who knows they are a better than you. The best way to get better is to look at the winning teams each week, the ones that take the top prizes. This will unlock the door to the winning strategies the pros use.

The Plaza Surf and Sports Building in Montauk is on the block with an asking price of $9.4 million. Located in the middle of downtown the building is one of the village’s largest retail spaces. Recessed frontage with a brick plaza is currently used to display merchandise, but could possibly be a sidewalk café in the heart of Montauk, according to the realtor. This hand was played recently at the Long Island Regional Tournament at the Upsky Hotel in Smithtown. Two diamonds was a reasonable contract for NS and 2S was a reasonable contract for EW. However, EW was pushed to an ambitious contract of 3S. My partner, Larry Hillel, somehow managed to make his difficult contract. North played his ace on the diamond lead and returned and returned a diamond to East’s king. Larry then led his jack of spades to North’s queen. North was not

comfortable with any lead and reluctantly led the ace of hearts winning but making both the king and queen of hearts winners. Larry quickly won his two heart tricks and then led a small spade to his king which was covered by North’s ace. Once again North led a diamond to West’s jack after which Larry led the 8 of spades which won the trick and removed North’s last trump. Next came a small club to his ace and the king fell making the queen a winner. Then came the club 9 to the good queen. Next came the jack of diamonds on which Larry discarded a club. Finally a club from dummy was ruffed in the East hand. Declarer made 3S losing one heart, one diamond and two trumps. Good timing and some fortuitous placement of key cards with a little luck thrown in the mix. Any questions or comments can be sent to gaman13927@aol.com. If you know four or five dedicated people who would like to learn how to play the world’s most challenging and exciting card game, please call me at 631-766-6656 or email to the above address.

On The Water Albies On The Incoming Shinnecock Bay The fluke season ended on a high note with lots of five and six pounders coming out of the basket and Rampasture Point areas. Lots of cocktail blues chasing bait around the bay. Tins are the best bet here. Peconic Bay Good reports of porgies continue over at Jessups and Rogers Rock. The weakfish are still in these areas too as well as up in Roses Grove.

King Fish are in play too. The bass are in the Peconics as well along with plenty of bunker to hold them here a while. Seems that this season has seen a resurgence of life out in these parts, hopefully a sign of good things to come.

Ocean Lots of seabass on the reef, but most in the 13 to 14-inch range but there are enough keepers to stick it out. Clams and squid will do just fine. Albies have been running around outside with blue mixing in, right place, right time. Shinnecock Inlet Albies have been the main focus this past week with each day getting better. Most action has been on the beginning of the incoming tide on the east jetty. The lure preference changes daily. Deadly Dicks, Cripple Herring, Pline Jigs, Hogy Epoxy Jigs all will do the job. Bluefish have been blitzing in the inlet, too. The best bit of news is that the mullet are showing signs of moving out and the bass should be on them. The guys targeting bass in the dark from the jetty have done decent on bucktails and swim shads. Boaters drifting live eels not as good but picking a few fish. Shinnecock Canal Snappers, cocktail blues, porgies, kingfish and schoolie striped bass have all been in the canal. Blues and bass best at dawn and dusk.

Ponquogue Bridge The night stalkers have done well with the bass on artificial lures and fresh shad. Clam bellies during the day have been somewhat productive but a lot of large porgies are stealing baits meant for bass, but with the cooler temps coming in it won’t be long now.

BA BA BOOEY!

Ocean Beaches The beaches east of the inlet have seen a few more fish than the west. A few bass have been taken to 30-inches on the night tides and schoolies on bucktails at dawn and dusk. Albies have come close enough to the beach for a few to hook up. The east jetty of Shinny seems to be the best bet this week. News: We will be running our Striped Bass in the Surf Tournament again this year. Stop by the shop for more info. Capt.
