Welcome! The Hamptons International Film Festival turns 22 this year, and so does The Independent. Both of us have a lot to be proud of. The HIFF has launched the career of dozens of stars and has featured scores of Oscar-winning films. The Independent has earned hundreds of awards for our hardhitting news, arts and entertainment coverage, and investigative reporting. Our guide is designed to be a companion while you traverse your way around the Hamptons during this fabulous weekend. Take it to the movie theaters, read it while your waiting on line or grabbing a bite.
It’s a fun read. If you are visiting for the first time, be sure to take a few minutes to visit our pristine beaches and trails, protected farms, and historic structures. They are what make The Hamptons a unique world-class destination. As for The Independent, we’re here, and we’ll be here every week. Best of all, our publication is free – pick one up on the newsstands or visit www.indyeastend.com to read the paper in its entirety. an intimate showcase of some of the year’s best offerings in contemporary cinema from around the world. With cash and prizes handed out totaling more than $190,000, HIFF continues to attract some of the best films of the year. Selections from all of its programs continue to play an important role during awards season. 2013 marked the fifth time
in the last six years that a film at the festival has become the eventual Best Picture winner at the Oscars, making HIFF the only festival on the East Coast with such a distinction. In those six years, films screened in the festival have received 150 Oscar nominations. Special Thanks To FRANK PR. Photos courtesy of HIFF.

Q&A With Patricia Clarkson
Opening Night In East Hampton
St. Vincent will be the opening night film at Guild Hall in East Hampton tomorrow evening. In the film Maggie (Melissa McCarthy), a single mother, moves into a new home in Brooklyn with her 12-year-old son, Oliver (Jaeden Lieberher). Forced to work long hours, she has no choice but to leave Oliver in the care of their new neighbor, Vincent (Bill Murray), a retired curmudgeon with a penchant for alcohol and gambling. Together with Daka (Naomi Watts), a pregnant stripper, Vincent brings Oliver along on his daily routine: the racetrack, a strip club, and the local dive bar. An odd friendship soon blossoms between the improbable pair in Theodore Melfi’s charming comedy.
International film star Patricia Clarkson will take par t in “A Conversation With . . .” at 2 PM on Friday at Bay Street Theatre in Sag Harbor. Clarkson will attend the festival on behalf of the spotlight film, L e a r n i n g To D r i v e , which will mark its U.S. premiere at the festival. Clarkson brings intelligence, dedication, and her unique sense of empathy. A graduate of the Yale School of Drama, she worked on Broadway before making the leap to feature films with 1987’s The Untouchables. After successful stints on television, she achieved breakthrough status with 1998’s High Art, where she earned an Independent Spirit Award nomination for Best Supporting Female. From there, she earned raves for her terrific turns in The Green Mile and The Station Agent among many others. Clarkson joins Hilary Swank, Mark Ruffalo, Laura Dern and Joel Schumacher, who are also participating in “A Conversation With . . .” making 2014 the program’s most robust year ever.

Wild Opens In Southampton
Closing Night: Still Alice
The festival will close with the US premiere of Still Alice on Monday at Guild Hall in East Hampton. The film stars Julianne Moore as Alice Howland. Alice, happily married with three grown children, is a renowned linguistics professor who starts to forget words. When she receives a diagnosis of early-onset Alzheimer’s her family finds their bonds thoroughly tested. Her struggle to stay connected to who she once was is frightening, heartbreaking, and inspiring. Filmmakers Richard Glatzer and Wash Westmoreland treat Alice’s disease with great sensitivity and care, yet never reach for sentimentality or easy answers. Moore gives a great, moving performance, and is ably supported by a cast that includes Kristen Stewart and Amagansett’s own Alec Baldwin.
Academy Award nominee Jean-Marc Vallée’s Wild will have its East Coast Premiere as the Southampton opener Friday night. Vallée will attend the festival on behalf of the film as well. Academy Award winner Reese Witherspoon stars in this superb adaptation of Cheryl Strayed’s best-selling 2012 memoir. Devastated by the death of her mother (played by Laura Dern), Strayed spirals toward self-destruction, ending her marriage and eventually becoming addicted to heroin. Four years later, seeking to leave her scars behind, she embarks on a life-changing journey: a solo, 1,000-mile plus hike along the Pacific Crest Trail. Jean-Marc Vallée is an acclaimed film director, screenwriter, and film editor from Québec. His debut feature, Black List (1995), was nominated for nine Genie Awards, including nods for Vallée’s direction and editing. Vallée’s last film, Dallas Buyers Club, is an Academy Award winner. Vallée’s follow-up is an inspiring voyage of pain and discovery, anchored by Witherspoon’s great performance and aided by a terrific supporting cast that includes Academy Award-nominated actress Laura Dern. The film will be released by Fox Searchlight on December 5, 2014. Dern will be in attendance for the Kaufman Astoria Studios sponsored premiere and will also participate in HIFF’s signature program, “A Conversation With . . .” on Saturday at Bay Street Theatre.

Soldier Ride Documentary In HIFF Heath Calhoun
Soldier Ride has become a nationwide phenomena, and East Hampton is its epicenter. On Saturday the movie that catches the gripping tragedy and ultimate triumph of U.S. veterans will air as part of the Hamptons International Film Festival. Welcome To Soldier Ride tells the story of traumatically wounded U.S. veterans as they struggle to return home from Iraq and Afghanistan and the people who change the public’s perceptions of how to treat soldiers retuning home from war. On this unforgettable journey Chris Carney, a bartender from East Hampton, Ret. SSG Heath Calhoun - a double leg amputee, and Ret. SSG Ryan Kelly, a single leg amputee, ride their bicycles across America. As Chris, Heath and Ryan travel from town to town along with Teki Vakaloloma driving the support vehicle, veterans and nonveterans join the ride to show their support. No longer a journey of personal accomplishment, Soldier Ride begins connecting veterans to the communities that they have sacrificed so much for. The producers, Matt Hindra and Nick Kraus, have deep local roots.

Horoscope by Kate Plumb
Week of October 8 to 14 Read your rising sign if you know it; or any other sign, as each of us has Aries, Taurus etc. someplace in our charts governing some aspect of our lives. ARIES (March 21-April 20) – The Lunar Eclipse Full Moon is in your sign today, and in opposition to the Sun in Libra. Oppositions, always happening at Full Moons, bring awareness. Events from the New Moon two weeks ago come to a head, and because of the eclipse, events from years ago may also. Eclipses are like throwing a rock across the surface of a pond and seeing ripples. Uranus is there too, so expect some surprises. You are facing someone you must incorporate into your life. TAURUS (April 20-May 21) – There is lots of Venusian energy at this Lunar Eclipse Full Moon today and into the week. The energy around Full Moons builds up to a crescendo and then takes a few days to subside. Venus is running into the volatile Uranus Pluto T square and then into Jupiter, where after the bumps and surprises you will see a new opportunity unfold. Thursday, Friday and Saturday morning the Moon is in your sign, be committed. You are being called upon to live and work the values you hold to be true. GEMINI (May 21- June 21) – Mercury your ruler moved into early Scorpio and the beginning of your 6th house on the 27th. Just as you were gearing up for devotion to work, your job, health regime or service, Mercury’s about face occurs. This planetary movement will coincide with you back tracking for some unfinished business into your 5th house of pleasure, where the Sun
www.ELIH.org
uannacut Alcohol & Substance Abuse Treatment
and Venus are. Expect clarity on what the retrograde issues want to inform you of around the 17th. You do not have to feel a slave or do your duty just yet; there still is some fun and creativity to be had. The Full Moon Lunar Eclipse today is like a light switch turning on or off, what was not seen is suddenly visible and visa versa. CANCER (June 21-July 20) – Continuing the work on the home front this week is in order especially after the disruption of today’s Lunar Eclipse Full Moon across your parental axis and career vs. home. The planets seem to be indicating that your growth is through bonding with those whom you live with. Mercury is backtracking into this house as well so your domestic life and how you feel about yourself will be your guide to making the right decisions this week. LEO (July 20-Aug. 20) – You must be feeling lucky, expansive, optimistic, magnanimous and able to open your heart and take charge with Jupiter in your sign. Mercury apparently retrograding back into your 3rd house of self expression, sibling and neighborly affairs, traveling and educational activities this week, as well as the Full Moon Lunar Eclipse in this department of life confirms where your attention is needed. Look to Monday the 13th to see the way forward. VIRGO (Aug. 20-Sept. 21) -- With the combination of the Full Moon Lunar Eclipse today and Mercury’s apparent retrograding this week you might be feeling at odds with the world. Events bring you suddenly to a new level of awareness with the Sun in opposition to the Moon –but with Mercury moving slowly and backwards your mental attitude will need time for adjustment. The Full Moon across your financial sector puts you on one end of a see saw-“my money” vs “their or our money.” Go for balancing and fairness and let go of the petty. LIBRA (Sept. 21-Oct. 20) – You have the Sun, North Node, Venus and Mercury in your sign this week and Jupiter contributing to the general good state of affairs; notwithstanding the Full Moon Lunar Eclipse
today with Uranus, which will make some fireworks for you. Expect to have to make some emotional shifts this week as your ruler moves into the very volatile Uranus Pluto square. Something or someone can arise out of seemingly nowhere to force you to reconsider your values and what you really want out of life. See the new opportunity and be happy. SCORPIO (Oct. 20-Nov. 21) – You might have thought you finally made a real decision on the 27th as Mercury entered your sign, but with the Full Moon Lunar Eclipse, Uranus and Mercury backtracking into your house of secrets on Friday, you might have to give yourself some extra time as some new information will be coming forth. Mercury was the only god who could leave Olympus and travel into Hades and return. So these times with Mercury apparent retrograde motion signal such times. Honor that. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 21-Dec. 21) – Happy you ought to be with your ruler Jupiter in fire sign Leo, accompanied by Mars in your sign and Uranus in Aries, yet another fire sign. Be inspired to reach out and get involved, be a leader, be creative and excited about something. Prometheus had a lot of consequences from stealing Zeus’ fire and giving it to mankind as it makes us co creators. The Full Moon Lunar Eclipse today will color the week with excitement especially as far as your creative pursuits or affairs with your progeny allow. Mercury retrograding allows you more time than usual to accomplish anything. CAPRICORN (Dec 21-Jan. 20) – You are at the top of the year at today’s Full Moon Lunar Eclipse. There ought to be relationship which your know you must attend to, as it fosters growth in both of you. The independent way of most of us is old hat. Full Moons bring issues to a head. Lunar Eclipses have a past and a future they bring in both. Something brewing for a long time, which might have been living below the surface or in the dark, comes to light. Mercury apparently retrograde gives you time to reorient yourself. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 19) – Today’s Full Moon Lunar Eclipse is across your mental perspective houses. The growth comes from abandoning an eccentric, self centered or independent perspective and aligning yourself with a group whose philosophy sees the bigger picture. With Mercury retrograding back into this area of life this week, you have extra time to rethink what you have come to define as the meaning of your life

Today’s Birthday: Chevy Chase, 1943
Around East Hampton the Lily Pond Lane resident got the reputation of being somewhat of a sourpuss, but history will remember Chevy Chase as a groundbreaking comedian. As his East Hampton address illustrates, Chase is a Blue Blood to be sure – his real name is Cornelius Crane Chase. Chase was listed in the social register while he was still a child; his father was a book editor and his mother a concert pianist, and his great grandfather: Cornelius Vanderbilt Crane. Chase went from one exclusive school to another. He was thrown out of Riverdale Country School, graduated from Stockbridge, was thrown out of Haverford College, and finally graduated from Bard College, where he was pre-med. Chase was known as a prankster and had a quick wit. He gravitated to comedy, first as a member of Channel One and in 1973 as a member of the cast of the “National Lampoon Radio Hour.” His big break came in 1975 when he was chosen to appear on “Saturday Night Live.” Chase quickly transitioned to feature films. Initially, he was a hot property scoring with Caddyshack and The National Lampoon films. But after some early successes he starred in a series of flops. In 1993 his much-ballyhooed late night TV series was a horrible bomb, a crushing blow to the man once heralded as the successor to Johnny Carson. Carson himself scoffed at the idea, saying Chase, “couldn’t ad lib a fart after a baked bean dinner.” Later Chase would complain that Jon Stewart and Steven Colbert stole his “Weekend Update” act. Chase, a Liberal, has campaigned for a number of Democratic candidates, but was humiliated after a vile remark about President George Bush he made at the Kennedy Center was roundly criticized. In East Hampton he passed himself off as a clean water advocate until a local journalist noted tree and lawn care workers spraying chemicals on his Lily Pond Lane property just steps from the ocean. and to partner with those persons. Saturn and Jupiter have you turning a corner these days and a Lunar Eclipse Full Moon is a good time to see the current situation for what it is and not what you want it to be. PISCES (Feb. 19-March 21) – Faith is called for these days. Whatever crisis the Full Moon Lunar Eclipse brings on today there is also in the sky a very inspiring fire trine. So say goodbye, wipe your tears and move into the future. We are all about balancing ourselves and coming into wholeness. If ever there was a time for you to use your healing gifts it is now. You have been honing your “higher mind” these last few years- gaining a wealth of knowledge either through advanced study or travel. We need your wisdom. HIFF: Where To Grab A Quick Bite By Rick Murphy You think you are living in a black and white world. That’s because everyone is dressed in black. You think you see Charlie Chaplin. And then you realize—you’re not yourself when you are hungry. But with 50 films to see and five days to see them, finding the time to eat isn’t easy. But trust us, you don’t want to be the star of next year’s hot documentary, Starving In The Hamptons. Here are a few places that can get you in and out in a hurry. A lot of visitors don’t realize we have an authentic pizzeria right in East Hampton Village that is as good as any Brooklyn has to offer. It’s Fierro’s (631324-5751), right across the alley from Waldbaums on Newtown Lane. There is a terrific variety of pies, whole or by the slice, hot and cold heroes, and a lot of stuff you wouldn’t expect, like (gasp!) healthy salads and wraps, and even paninis. There are tables inside, or get it to go. They even have those neat little bottles of chianti you can smuggle into the theater. Across the street next to the school, hidden down the alley, is an authentic Chinese take-out place, Chinatown (631-324-1999). If you’re staying at the Dutch Motel, Chen’s (631-329-0333) is right next-door, and the take-out is
excellent. Best Taste (631-267-8801) next to Brent’s in Amagansett, is another standout Chinese take out, and if you’re going out to Montauk, don’t forget Brents (631-267-3113): it’s the best selection of hot to-go lunches and dinners around. Breakfast sandwiches and burgers are great, too. Back in East Hampton Village, if you head north on Newtown Lane and turn left at the railroad tracks after watching Rocky Vs. Rambo: This Time It’s Personal, a classic Italian “Pork” store awaits with the authentic Italian heroes, great salad (try the antipasto), prepared foods like lasagna (and, of course veggie lasagna) cold drinks, and great prices. Villa Italian Specialties (631-324-5110) also has a special hero each day that can be shared by two people, or maybe even three smallish leading men. Mary’s Marvelous (631-324-1055) just opened in its newest locale on Newtown Lane. Find all the favorites from their Amagansett home base, including delicious home baked treats, and hearty sandwiches and soups for lunch. Eat all the sugary junk you want just make sure you put some kale in your smoothie and wear your gym clothes and you’ll convince yourself you are healthy.

want to smuggle one into the theater to watch Star Wars: The First Sequel To The Prequel. Paul’s Italian American restaurant offers affordable sit down dinners if you can spare the time -- it’s right next door to the theater. In Westhampton Beach Hampton Coffee (631-288-4480) on 194 Mill Road is a filmgoer’s paradise. The coffee is the best around, there’s fresh baked muffins and scones, a smoothie bar, and breakfast and lunch served all day. There’s another in Watermill (631726-2633) at 869 Montauk Highway. Look for their mobile unit as well. In Sag Harbor The Corner Bar (631-725-9760) is right across the street from Bay Street Theatre. The burgers are legendary, the drinks flow, and the patrons are friendly. Just down the block is Conca D’Oro (631735-3167), across from the historic Sag Harbor movie theater. There is a Golden Pear there, as well as on Newtown Lane in East Hampton and Main Street in Southampton. Just south, on Madison Street, sits Il Capuccino (631-725-2747), a sit down Italian restaurant that has been doing it for almost 50 years. They should make a movie about the garlic rolls – they are that good.
The epicenter for the HIFF crowd is, as always, John Papas Café (631-3245400), in the west end of the parking lot behind Main Street. There’s lots of seating, and it serves breakfast, lunch and dinner. Stay or take it with you. Say hello to Alec if you see him, he grazes there often. If it’s bagels you want, Goldberg’s (100 Pantigo Place, 631-329-8300) east of East Hampton Village, is a treat, and also offers hot breakfast. There’s another one in Southampton, at 819 County Road 39, north of the village. Call 631-204-1046 to place an order. Speaking of Southampton, La Parmigiana (631-283-9752), on Hampton Road, a short walk for the theater, is another authentic Italian restaurant with pizza to go – or, sit down and grab a hot meal and have a glass of wine or two. Sip ‘n Soda (631282-2800), right down the block, is the quintessential luncheonette, and has been for generations. And yes, Gary Cooper ate there (Note for Movie Trivia Quiz: he’s buried in Southampton.) The Jobs Lane Deli (631-288-6552) is diagonally across the street from the movie theater and a about a block down, and the small place makes a big sandwich, so wear something baggy over that black turtleneck if you

is superb. Rosamund Pike (Die Another Day) landed the plum role of Amy Dunne and nails it. Neil Patrick Harris makes the transition from small to big screen with aplomb. There are those critics who flinch from Fincher’s perverted style (think Se7en) but this film is going to be a box office smash and a major player when the Oscar nominees are announced.
New To Theaters Gone Girl * (R) This year’s IT movie has arrived, and it is indeed the early favorite for the Best Picture Oscar. The Oscar pedigree is everywhere, from the producer, David Fincher (The Social Network) to the male lead, Ben Affleck (Argo). The script, faithfully culled from Gillian Flynn’s international bestseller, is diabolical and edgy, and the acting

movie about a man who sucks the blood out of humans can be rated PG-13 is a question to ponder. This is really a vehicle for heartthrob Luke Evans (Fast & Furious) designed to get teenage fannies in the seats. If you have one, go and enjoy.

Neighbors This was supposed to be another hilarious vehicle for Seth Rogen but the truth is its obnoxious and gross. Zac Efron goes down with the ship, Rose Byrne co-stars. By all means try it if your IQ is 87 and you think farting and throwing up are hilarious. Now Playing The Good Lie (PG-13) Reese Witherspoon is indeed wonderful
in this much-hyped film about an American humanitarian dedicated to bring “The Lost Boys” – victims of the brutal Sudanese civil war – to safety in America. It could have been a riveting movie, but the sight of this American goody two shoes in the midst of the horror and pallor is a bit too much to be believed.
