Holiday Giving Programs As we enter into the holiday season, The Retreat has announced the agency’s annual Holiday Giving Programs. In the true spirit of the season, The Retreat asks supporters to join together in brightening the holiday experience of courageous families affected by domestic violence. During the holiday season, an increasing amount of families seek out The Retreat’s services. Many women and children find that during the holidays, domestic violence increases due to money problems, and increasing amounts of alcohol and drug use. The most peaceful time of year, sadly, can be the hardest. In an effort to infuse light into some of the dark realities these families have to face, The Retreat is looking for help in providing survivor families with a joyful holiday experience during Thanksgiving and the December holidays.

Supporters may contribute to The Retreat’s Thanksgiving Gift Card Drive. The agency asks for gift cards to local food stores so that clients can shop on their own and provide a fruitful Thanksgiving experience for their families. Please send gift cards to The Retreat at 13 Goodfriend Drive, East Hampton, New York 11937 by November 12. Supporters can also consider offering support to The Retreat’s annual Adopt-A-Family Program by donating holiday presents or gift cards for a family in need. Great Hamptons Road Rally Jim Shelly and Georgica Services Ltd. present “The Great Hamptons Road Rally” on Saturday at noon. The rally is dedicated to the memory of their dear friend and fellow rally enthusiast Jon Auerbach. The Auerbach family is hosting the event.

The Internship Vince Vaughn and Owen Wilson, who bonded in Wedding Crashers, seek to recapture the magic in this intermittently funny effort from Shawn Levy (Date Night). The pair makes loveable buddies, and if you buy into that, you’ll enjoy this film.

Now Playing 12 Years A Slave (R) If you waited for hours and paid a small fortune to see this film on closing night of the Hamptons International Film Festival, you got played. It opens Friday for general release. A free black man from New York, Solomon Northup, played magnificently by Chiwetel Ejiofor, is abducted and sold into slavery. He endures oppressive cruelty – and experiences unexpected acts of kindness, as he struggles to retain his dignity. In the 12th year of his unforgettable odyssey, Solomon’s chance meeting with a Canadian abolitionist – played admirably by Brad Pitt -- changes his fate. This film is a major contender for the Best Picture Oscar – don’t miss it.

Other Desert Cities, the Broadway triumph by Jon Robin Baitz about one family’s moving struggle with the challenges and the cost of recasting the truth in the name of love, will be the first play in the Hampton Theatre Company’s 29th season for a threeweek run in Quogue. Winner of the Outer Critics Circle Award for Outstanding New OffBroadway play, Other Desert Cities earned five Tony Award nominations after it moved to Broadway and was a finalist for the 2012 Pulitzer Prize

for Drama. Set in Palm Springs, California, during the 2004 Christmas holiday, the play explores with heart and great wit the dynamics of the Wyeth family, as parents Polly and Lyman, successful show business Republicans, react to the announcement by their liberal daughter Brooke that she is about to publish a memoir dredging up a pivotal and tragic event in the family’s history. Brooke must also navigate

through some tricky emotional dust storms in explaining her motives to two other family members: her liberal aunt Silda, a recovering alcoholic and her mother’s former writing partner; and her quick-witted and affable brother Trip, who is making his own way as a television producer and is loath to rock the family boat. Playing the role of Brooke in the Hampton Theatre Company production is Morgan Vaughan, returning to the Quogue stage after following up her tour de force in the role of Margie in the HTC’s fall 2012 production of Good People with a compelling turn as Lady Macbeth in the Round Table Theatre Company’s production of Shakespeare’s Scottish play in Wainscott last winter. HTC artistic director Diana Marbury, last seen on the Quogue stage in Other People’s Money before directing last spring’s production of How the Other Half Loves, has the role of Brooke’s mother, Polly. Vay David, another HTC veteran, returns to the stage in Quogue in the role of Polly’s sister Silda. Brooke’s father, Lyman Wyeth, will be played by Craig Braun, a newcomer to the Hampton Theatre Company who is a lifetime member of The Actors Studio and trails a long list of credits in stage work in New York and Los Angeles, as well as work in television—including the lead role in the acclaimed German

miniseries Betrayal in Paradise—and in films. The role of Trip Wyeth will be played by another newcomer to the HTC, Ian Bell, a graduate of NYU’s Tisch School of the Arts who studied with Terry Schreiber at his studio in New York and lists among his credits Lanford Wilson’s Balm in Gilead and The Last Days of Judas Iscariot by Stephen Adly Guirgis. Hampton Theatre Company Executive Director Sarah Hunnewell directs. The set design is by Sean Marbury; lighting is by Sebastian Paczynski; set decor by Diana Marbury; and costumes by Teresa LeBrun. I know you love the socializing; it just may be time to bring it to your place rather than just going and doing. Check in with your favorite place at home and touch all your favorite stuff. When “Happy Days” first appeared on television in October 1973, the leather clad greaser mechanic was a minor figure with a couple of lines. But Arthur Herbert Fonzarelli was so popular, he quickly became the central figure of the show. Director Garry Marshall was looking for a blonde “stud muffin” Italian to play the dumb foil to Ron Howard’s Richie Cunningham character. Winkler was anything but, a Jew from Manhattan with an MFA in Drama from Yale. But he won Marshall over during his audition and landed the role. Winkler has been in the business ever since, acting, directing, and producing, though he never again landed a role to match the iconic Fonzie. He starred in Night Shift in 1982, a movie directed by Howard, who went on to earn an Oscar for directing (A Beautiful Mind). Scream and The Waterboy are two of the many other films Winkler has appeared in. He returned to television in the 90s and can currently be seen on “Royal Pains” and “Children’s Hospital” in recurring roles. Winkler, who has been married for 35 years and has three children, has earned two Golden Globes, two Emmys and was the 9th King of the Bacchus, Mardi Gras and Parade in New Orleans in 1977.

This salad is fairly easy to make, however the quality of the salad relies heavily on thin precision knife cuts of the vegetables. This recipe will be a good test of your knife skills in the kitchen, and, this being said, you will need a mandolin food slicer to cut proper thin julienne (or long thin stick like cuts). First you want your vegetables clean, so wash them and peel the ones that have skin, like carrots and celery root. Now carefully adjust your mandolin to a very thin setting and begin slicing the vegetables. Then line up the pieces and finish the job with a chef knife. The result should be long thin slices of vegetables. Mix all vegetables and herbs in a bowl and set aside. Cut the steak into strips (always cut against the grain). Heat the grill

and marinate the steak in a bit of soy sauce and some of the dressing you've made while the grill heats.
