Holiday Giving Programs As we enter into the holiday season, The Retreat has announced the agency’s annual Holiday Giving Programs. In the true spirit of the season, The Retreat asks supporters to join together in brightening the holiday experience of courageous families affected by domestic violence. During the holiday season, an increasing amount of families seek out The Retreat’s services. Many women and children find that during the holidays, domestic violence increases due to money problems, and increasing amounts of alcohol and drug use. The most peaceful time of year, sadly, can be the hardest. In an effort to infuse light into some of the dark realities these families have to face, The Retreat is looking for help in providing survivor families with a joyful holiday experience during Thanksgiving and the December holidays. Supporters can consider offering support to The Retreat’s annual Adopt-A-Family Program by donating holiday presents or gift cards for a family in need. Call The Retreat’s Holiday Help Line at 631-329-4398 and ask for Christiana or Lisa, to learn more about becoming involved in brightening the holiday season for survivors of domestic violence.

Miss Ella’s Shop for a cause. Fridays to Sundays from noon to 4 PM through December 22. Miss Ella’s Holiday Shop at Hallockville will have local handcrafted gifts, jewelry, woodcarvings, antiques, collectibles, ornaments, cards and seasonal items, plus educational toys and games for children. All proceeds benefit the not-for-profit mission of Hallockville Museum Farm, support the preservation of 19 historic structures dating back to 1765 across 28 acres of preserved farmland. Located on Sound Avenue in Riverhead, Hallockville is home to cows and sheep, and offers educational programming that connects the community to the shared agricultural heritage throughout the year. Museum members save 10 percent off non-consignment purchases. East End Hospice Worth New York in Tanger Outlet in Riverhead presents holiday makeovers to benefit East End Hospice on Friday from 11 AM to 5 PM. Worth has teamed up with Southampton’s 27 Hamptons Salon to give complimentary hair styling and cosmetic makeovers. Everyone who signs up for a makeover will receive a goody bag and $50 Worth gift certificate. Appointment lasts approximately 45 minutes. To book your makeover make a $25 donation to East End Hospice. Space is limited. To register call 631-2887080 or email ddoyle@eeh.org.

stage adaptation of the book. The story, which made its debut in 1956, won both a Tony award for Best Play and the Pulitzer Prize for drama. This riveting play about the lives of eight people hiding from the Nazis in a concealed space above a warehouse allows audiences to feel their claustrophobic existence, their hopes, their fears and their indomitable will to survive. The production is directed by Joe Minutillo. The program is sponsored in part by The Dana Foundation, Halstead Property, Suffolk County, The Sunny & Abe Rosenberg Foundation, Colgate-Palmolive, and the Town of Southampton. Public performance pricing is set at $12 for students and $25 for adults with special rates for schools and other groups. Fridays and Saturdays at 7 PM. The play is suggested for ages 13 and up. For those who are interested in supporting the program, donations can be made online at www. baystreet.org or by calling the Administrative office at 631-7250818. For school and group sales, show times and to purchase tickets, call the box office at 631-725-9500 or buy online at www.baystreet.org.

ARIES (Mar. 20 - Apr. 20) Just a reminder of how powerful you are. You know it and others have no way to not feel it, so take your responsibility seriously and take charge when you have the chance. Don’t fear your powerful side; take hold of it.

LIBRA (Sept. 23 - Oct. 23) It is about lifestyle. What kind of lifestyle do you want to live? You have the chance to set things up so that you end up living the life you truly want. Take those first steps and do not take lifestyle and quality of life off the table.

TAURUS (Apr. 20 - May 21) Boundaries are key. You will have to set things up so that you can manage them rather than biting off more than you can chew. Set realistic goals and make reasonable choices and narrow down your choices.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23 - Nov. 22) There is a whole little group of planets in your sign so you may have to do some negotiating as things get brought to the surface and there are conflicting ideas. Negotiate. Keep an open mind or keep your feelings open to new ideas is a better way of putting it. Entertain other possibilities.

CANCER (June 22 - July 23) You are so good at taking things in, taking in other people’s energy and feelings, but this may be the time you need to allow things to burst out of you. Don’t be afraid to be dramatic and even loud, it is time for the unexpressed energy to find a way out. LEO (July 23 - Aug. 23) No guilt, no sense of duty. Put those ideas aside for right now and get clear about what is authentic for you. That is your job right now: to be your authentic self. Tune in and feel what your truth is, and then take steps from there. VIRGO (Aug. 23 - Sept. 23) Not the time to indulge the fear. Feel the fear, don’t resist feeling it, and just move through it. Feel the fear and do it anyway is this week’s mantra. You have battled so much; don’t allow the fear to make you stand still now!

Janet Russell

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22 - Dec. 21) I know delays are not your favorite things, but why not figure out how to go with the flow and allow things to unfold in the right and perfect time? Not your plan, but the Universe’s plan. Trust that bumps along the way or a lack of clarity that lead you in a new direction are part of the plan. CAPRICORN (Dec. 21 - Jan. 20) Your intuition is very high right now, so trust those little nudges from the Universe. You may even find that your dreams become prophetic. Interesting time and energy -- feel this different type of power and use it well. Trust it. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20 - Feb. 19) Easy does it. Do your best to take things one step at a time and don’t be in a hurry. If someone is trying to get you to move faster than you want, slow things down and trust that part of you that is feeling conservative. It is so unusual for you to be inclined to be conservative that you need to honor it. PISCES (Feb. 19 - Mar. 20) Not the time to overdo things. Know that

Today’s Birthday: Robert Louis Stevenson

by Asher Lee

GEMINI (May 21 - June 22) No need to get lost in all the fears, no matter how tempting this may seem this week. Your mind is seeing things through the lens of fear, (if you find yourself terrified), and this is only one possible way of looking at things. You can trust yourself.

THE INDEPENDENT • Traveler Watchman

Had this legendary Scottish novelist been born a century later he would doubtless be swimming in riches, royalties from his best selling books, and the movie rights that go with them. He would no doubt have his own website and fan club – oh wait, he DOES have his own website and fan club. Any way you look at it, Robert Louis Stevenson did all right for himself. He was born in Edinburgh, his father from a long list of lighthouse engineers and his mother a well-to-do gentry whose roots traced back to the 15th century. Robert was a sickly youngster, like many from his mother’s side susceptible to chest and lung infections. He broke from the family tradition to study law at Edinburgh College rather than engineering. However, Stevenson’s prose was already attracting attention and it became apparent he was an extremely gifted writer. When Stevenson was 29 he set off on an ambitious journey to track down a woman he had met in France. He booked an Atlantic crossing on a steamship, arrived in New York seriously ill, and nevertheless made it across country to California, where he nearly died. It was that epic journey that gave Stevenson the life experience he needed to write many of his epic tales. Still extremely ill, Stevenson found and married the woman he loved, Fanny Osbourne. With her children in tow the couple moved back to coastal England, where Stevenson penned the first of what was to be a string of literary marvels, the Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde followed by his first commercial success, Treasure Island. Stevenson set out on another adventure, making his way to San Francisco and chartering a boat that would bring him to Hawaii and various South Pacific islands. On the occasion of his 40th birthday Stevenson bought a large piece of land in Samoa and built a family compound. It was there he penned Weir of Hermiston, which he considered his masterpiece. Stevenson died in Samoa at the age of 44, and was buried in a tomb overlooking the sea. there are things you will need to say ‘no’ to, people you may have to disappoint because you do not have unlimited energy, nor are you supposed to do everything! If something feels like it will be too much when you are just thinking about it, know that it is probably not yours to do. NOTE: If you were born at the end or beginning of a sign, read

the sign before or after your birthday. Asher Lee is a professional Astrologer and Tarot reader. Sunlight Jr. (NR) Naomi Watts is terrific as a store clerk who is in love with a disabled man, skillfully played by Matt Dillon. She becomes pregnant, loses her job, and the hapless couple soon find themselves homeless. In other words, just your usual, run of the mill, cheerful yuletide tale. Add a star if you are seriously depressed and need company or if you need a little push toward the suicide you’ve long been contemplating. Tess Harper co-stars.

White House Down The idea was to team white hot Channing Tatum up with Jamie Foxx and let them do the buddy-cop thing. But the director Roland Emmerich (Independence Day) and the screenwriter James Vanderbilt (Spiderman) couldn’t leave well enough alone, and the result is a noisy and annoying exhibit of special effects and explosions that numbs the senses.

Now Playing Ender’s Game (PG-13) Sci-Fi movies are getting better and better, thanks to the amazing technology being developed. This effort, directed by Gavin (X-Men: Origins) Hood, features old hands Ben Kingsley and Harrison Ford, who ably fight off aliens bent on destroying the world. Young Asa Butterfield, though, is the real hero. Viola Davis co-stars. This is a fun ride for the whole family. He’s probably reaching a little too much for another one with Nebraska, which is a rather bleak ode to fatherson relationships. It is the bittersweet story of Woody Grant (Bruce Dern) a curmudgeon who thinks he was won $1 million in a sweepstakes. Actor nomination– as of now he is the hands down favorite to take home the statue. Jared Leto also does outstanding work in a supporting role. The Counselor (R) On paper this is a can’t miss film directed by legendar y filmmaker Ridley Scott and written by Pulitzer Prize winning author Cormac McCarthy. The cast is cluttered with A-Listers including Michael Fassbender, Brad Pitt and Cameron Diaz, along with Oscar winners Javier Bardem and Penelope Cruz. The plot is centered around the always marketable Central American drug trade. There is only one problem – somehow, all these pieces clash horribly, and what emerges is an epically bad film, one that may well end up a contender for the Razzie Award as worst movie of the year.
