Iconic rock and roll photographer, Lynn Goldsmith held a special exhibit and book signing at Morrison Hotel Gallery in NYC on Saturday. Goldsmith signed copies of her new book, Rock and Roll Stories, which was released on November 5. Her famous images were hanging at the gallery as well.

Group Art Show The Retreat, the only non-profit domestic violence agency serving the East End of Long Island for over 26 years, has announced the Top 25 artists who will be featured in a group show opening on Saturday at the Richard J. Demato Fine Arts Gallery in the heart of Sag Harbor. Submissions of photography, painting, mixed media, graphics, drawing, 2D, 3D, and sculpture came from around the globe including Israel, Russia, Sweden, and all across the United States. Jurors for this year’s competition included Sara Nightingale, owner of the Sara Nightingale Gallery in Water Mill and Scott Sandell, Visual Arts Director of Stony Brook University (Southampton campus). The Diary Of Anne Frank Bay Street Theatre in Sag Harbor presents The Diary Of Anne Frank on stage through November 26. The Diary of Anne Frank, written by Frances Goodrich and Albert Hackett, is presented as part of Bay Street Theatre’s Literature Live! 2013 educational program, which presents a piece of literature selected from the core curriculum and brings it to life on stage for the general public as well as for schools across Long Island.
Melodies & Memories Area seniors will perform live on stage on Sunday at 3 PM in an endearing production as part of the Life-Long Learning Program “Melodies & Memories,” in collaboration with the Town of Southampton Senior Services, at the Westhampton Beach Performing Arts Center. Holiday Giving Programs As we enter into the holiday season, The Retreat has announced the agency’s annual Holiday Giving Programs. In the true spirit of the season, The Retreat asks supporters to join together in brightening the holiday experience of courageous families affected by domestic violence. During the holiday season, an increasing amount of families seek out The Retreat’s services. Many women and children find that during the holidays, domestic violence increases due to money problems, and increasing amounts of alcohol and drug use. The most peaceful time of year, sadly, can be the hardest. In an effort to infuse light into some of the dark realities these families have to face, The Retreat is looking for help in providing survivor families with a joyful holiday experience during Thanksgiving and the December holidays. Supporters can consider offering support to The Retreat’s annual Adopt-A-Family Program by donating holiday presents or gift cards for a family in need. Call The Retreat’s Holiday Help Line at 631-329-4398 and ask for Christiana or Lisa, to learn more about becoming involved in brightening the holiday season for survivors of domestic violence.

This riveting play about the lives of eight people hiding from the Nazis in a concealed space above a warehouse allows audiences to feel their claustrophobic existence, their hopes, their fears and their indomitable will to survive. The production is directed by Joe Minutillo. The program is sponsored in part by The Dana Foundation, Halstead Property, Suffolk County, The Sunny & Abe Rosenberg Foundation, Colgate-Palmolive, and the Town of Southampton. Public performance pricing is set at $12 for students and $25 for adults with special rates for schools and other groups. Fridays and Saturdays at 7 PM. The play is suggested for ages 13 and up. Had this legendary Scottish novelist been born a century later he would doubtless be swimming in riches, royalties from his best selling books, and the movie rights that go with them. He would no doubt have his own website and fan club – oh wait, he DOES have his own website and fan club. Any way you look at it, Robert Louis Stevenson did all right for himself. He was born in Edinburgh, his father from a long list of lighthouse engineers and his mother a well-to-do gentry whose roots traced back to the 15th century. Robert was a sickly youngster, like many from his mother’s side susceptible to chest and lung infections. He broke from the family tradition to study law at Edinburgh College rather than engineering. However, Stevenson’s prose was already attracting attention and it became apparent he was an extremely gifted writer. When Stevenson was 29 he set off on an ambitious journey to track down a woman he had met in France. He booked an Atlantic crossing on a steamship, arrived in New York seriously ill, and nevertheless made it across country to California, where he nearly died. It was that epic journey that gave Stevenson the life experience he needed to write many of his epic tales. Still extremely ill, Stevenson found and married the woman he loved, Fanny Osbourne. With her children in tow the couple moved back to coastal England, where Stevenson penned the first of what was to be a string of literary marvels, the Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde followed by his first commercial success, Treasure Island. Stevenson set out on another adventure, making his way to San Francisco and chartering a boat that would bring him to Hawaii and various South Pacific islands. On the occasion of his 40th birthday Stevenson bought a large piece of land in Samoa and built a family compound. It was there he penned Weir of Hermiston, which he considered his masterpiece. Stevenson died in Samoa at the age of 44, and was buried in a tomb overlooking the sea. there are things you will need to say ‘no’ to, people you may have to disappoint because you do not have unlimited energy, nor are you supposed to do everything! He convinces his estranged son (Will Forte) to taking a road trip with him to collect the money. Talk about bleak – it’s in black and white, for crying out loud. Stacy Keach co-stars. Dallas Buyer’s Club (R) Matthew McConaughey is winning raves for his performance as the real-life Texas cowboy Ron Woodroof, who was diagnosed with AIDS and given 30 days to live in 1985. The Counselor (R) On paper this is a can’t miss film directed by legendar y filmmaker Ridley Scott and written by Pulitzer Prize winning author Cormac McCarthy. The cast is cluttered with A-Listers including Michael Fassbender, Brad Pitt and Cameron Diaz, along with Oscar winners Javier Bardem and Penelope Cruz. The plot is centered around the always marketable Central American drug trade. There is only one problem – somehow, all these pieces clash horribly, and what emerges is an epically bad film, one that may well end up a contender for the Razzie Award as worst movie of the year.
