by Asher Lee
Today’s Birthday: Little Richard, 1932 On December 5, 1492 Christopher Columbus, sailing west from Spain, landed on a large island in the western Atlantic and named it Hispañola (it is now the Dominican Republic and Haiti). In 1956 on this date Nelson Mandela was arrested in South Africa and charged with treason, an event that inspired the civil rights movement. Down in Macon, Georgia, in 1932, Charlie “Bud” Penniman and the former Leva Mae Stewart welcomed their third child into the world on this date (they were to have 12 in all). They named him Richard Wayne Penniman. His grandfather was a preacher, so as a young man Richard spent considerable time in church and became enthralled with gospel music. By the time he was a teenager Richard had mastered the vocal intricacies he heard in church and was determined to become a professional singer. As it turned out, his music literally changed the world. He was still finding his way in the business when he began pounding out a rhythm on the piano, a “Boogie Woogie” sound he picked up from studio musicians. He improvised the words on the spot, shouting “Tutti Frutti, good booty.” The song’s lyrics were cleaned up for the radio and “Tutti Frutti” took off. As often happened in those days, white artists stole the song and had the commercial success that eluded black songwriters. In fact, both Pat Boone and Elvis Presley released the song as a single, as did Little Richard. At one point all three singles were on the best selling charts. Little Richard followed with, “Long Tall Sally,” and Boone released it was well. Bill Haley stole his next single. There was no stopping Little Richard, though. Combining the Boogie Woogie beat with the funk sound he had also mastered, Richard took standard blues progressions and fired them up into a frenetic whirlwind of sound. He had a staggering 17 hits over the next few years, including “Good Golly Miss Molly.” He toured the nation, drawing black and white enthusiasts to hear the sound and watch the man bang the keys with his elbows, knees, feet, and sometimes head. No one had ever witnessed a performer like Little Richard before or since. Though more than few artists staked the claim, it was Little Richard who literally invented the genre that became rock‘n roll. Years later a panel of experts from the industry compiled a list of “The Top 100 Records That Changed The World.” “Tutti Frutti“ was number one. Experts said the song was, “the sound of the birth of rock and roll.” Little Richard has received every significant music award there is, and continues to perform to this day. Little Richard’s enduring classics continue to inspire musicians in every genre. And no lyricist could be more effusive using fewer words in the English language: “a wop bop alu bop, a wop bam boom.” Indeed. ARIES (Mar. 20 - Apr. 20) You are on your own this week. Even if you are surrounded by dozens of people, they will most likely not be helpful. For some reason, this is a time of really experiencing your own abilities without the help of others. It is only temporary. Use the time to get a sense of your power and resourcefulness. TAURUS (Apr. 20 - May 21) Sometimes you just have to accept that who you are is okay. Even if those around you are telling you every minute of every day or not that you aren’t, know that who you are is just fine. Now is a time of giving yourself permission to be who you are without requiring validation from others. GEMINI (May 21 - June 22) Adjustments are necessary as you continue making choices that support the life you want to lead. The energy around you is so lovely it would be a shame to fail to enjoy it because you got into a negative thinking pattern you can’t escape. Take a break and reassess your life. See if you can get focused on the miracle within it all. CANCER (June 22 - July 23) It is true. Choose to believe that everyone has a different point of view and even -- or especially -- when someone’s differs from yours, it is still valid. Everyone won’t and can’t agree with you or do things the way you would. It is the wonder of this life, learning to appreciate the other point of view. LEO (July 23 - Aug. 23) Take a good look around. So many people really do love you and hold you in the highest regard. Let them love you and allow yourself to receive their love. And don’t forget to hold yourself in
the same high regard. We know you are extraordinary – join the club! VIRGO (Aug. 23 - Sept. 23) Stable expansive change is the vibe of this week. Don’t be surprised if you actually finish some projects. Even if they have been around for a long time and all of a sudden you get the rush to do something – do that thing. Trust the flow of energy. Right now it holds extraordinary opportunity. LIBRA (Sept. 23 - Oct. 23) You will indeed get to finish all that you have started; it just may take a bit longer than you thought. It may have seemed that completion was near, but, lo and behold, it is delayed. Just keep plugging along, priorities in hand. You are closer than you think. SCORPIO (Oct. 23 - Nov. 22) It may simply be a better choice to limit your words and show people how you feel instead. Words may miss the mark, but a smartly-timed kind act will take you far and there will be little room for misunderstanding. Kindness wins over any amount of words. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22 - Dec. 21) Changes of direction are expected. There are many ways to get to your destination. Don’t allow a small wrench in the plans stop you from following through on a course of action. What will you believe? Your experience of your life, or someone else’s opinion? CAPRICORN (Dec. 21 - Jan. 20) Have you picked things apart enough yet? I think so. Take a break and

give your head a rest and use the considerable energy at your disposal for good constructive projects. Stop thinking and do something, and if you find yourself getting all lost in your head again do something else.
Things that miss the mark or don’t seem to quite work out may be things you shouldn’t be directing your energy toward. What is true for you will happen effortlessly. Trust your feelings and intuitions.
AQUARIUS (Jan. 20 - Feb. 19) Know that you will finish things, even if they are delayed for the moment. Take your time and remember that slow and steady thing. Don’t’ be in a hurry. If you can trust the natural momentum of things, you will indeed find your own rhythm and find the ways to complete all the different tasks in front of you. Impatience needs to be avoided.

PISCES (Feb. 19 - Mar. 20) Not a time to beat your head against a wall. The wall will win. If there is no energy in a certain direction, take a different path.

Playing For Keeps (PG-13) Gabriele Muccino (The Pursuit Of Happyness) brings us this run-ofthe mill romantic comedy about a professional soccer star (Gerard Butler) who comes home to regroup. It is clichéd, but the film has its moments – just don’t expect it to be more than it is. Jessica Biel, Uma Thurman, Catherine Zeta-Jones and Dennis Quaid co-star.

Men In Black III East Hampton’s Barry Sonnenfeld brings his franchise back for Number 3 and like two old friends, it’s great to see them again. They literally go back -- in time -- to save the world from creatures both grotesque and humorous. Agents J (Will Smith) and K (Tommy Lee Jones) have the usual snappy banter going, and Josh Brolin signs on as the wetbehind-the-ears newbie agent. The film was a box office disappointment, however, and it’s probably safe to assume all concerned will move on. Emma Thompson costars.

Pan Seared Chicken
With Broccoli, Toasted Almonds And Garlic Ingredients (serves 4) 4 chicken breasts (skin on) 2 heads of broccoli 1/2 c whole roasted almonds (chopped) 2 cloves of garlic (minced) 2 tbsp olive oil 2 tbsp butter 1/2 bunch of thyme 1/4 c red wine salt and pepper to taste Method Start by placing the chicken skin down on a plate. Season the flesh with salt and pepper. Fill a large pot with salted water and bring it to a boil. Trim the broccoli florets and set them off to the side. Set your oven to 425 and begin to heat a large, oven friendly, sauté pan for the chicken. When the pan is hot coat the pan evenly with one tbsp of olive oil. Place each breast skin side down
into your very hot pan and keep it over high heat for 30 seconds. Add the thyme to the pan and place it in the hot oven and allow the chicken to cook skin side down in the pan at 425 degrees for 20 to 25 minutes. When the chicken is about five minutes from being done cook your broccoli. Place a sauté pan over medium heat and heat 1 tbsp of olive oil. Give the broccoli florets a quick dunk in the boiling salted water about 40 seconds. Remove them from the water and set aside. Toss the chopped almonds in the hot oil and give them a light toast.
