things? Are there some simple things you can complete on your own that it may be time to do? Time spent with yourself right now has great value.
by Asher Lee
Today’s Birthday: James Dean, 1931
A cult hero whose stature seems to grow with time, the sultry actor James Dean starred in only three films before his untimely death – and they are all considered classics. Dean was born in Indiana but moved to Brentwood, California when he was six. He was considered somewhat of a mother’s boy and was devastated when she died of cancer when he was nine. He was sent back to Indiana to live with an aunt. He studied acting in high school, returned to California to attend UCLA, and quit school when he was cast in a production of Macbeth. Dean did some commercials, had a few bit roles in films, and studied acting under the great Lee Strasberg with Marlon Brando, among others. His popularity intensified, and Dean was doing regular TV work when Hollywood beckoned. Elia Kazan cast him in East of Eden and made his character, Cal Trask, the central figure in the movie. He quickly followed that effort with Rebel Without a Cause, a story of teenage angst that resonated with the younger crowd. His final role, Giant with Elizabeth Taylor and Rock Hudson, was released posthumously in 1956 after Dean smashed up a Porsche 550 Spyder he intended to race. Though his role in Rebel made him a heartthrob, Dean was recused from duty in the Armed Services because he said he was a homosexual. There are at least two men that historians believe Dean had significant relationships with, though he dated women as well. Today, Dean is often considered a gay icon because of his onscreen and off screen persona of sexual ambivalence. In 1955 Dean became the first actor to be nominated for an Oscar after his death for his role in East Of Eden. He won a Golden Globe for his performance in Giant. Dean’s death car, “The Little Bastard,” is a legend in its own right. It is said the car continued to kill – once falling off a tow truck and crushing a man. On another occasion, a garage it was housed in burned to the ground, and every car in it as well – except for the Bastard, which was unharmed. Pieces of the Spyder are sought after as collectors’ items, despite the curse they apparently carry.
ARIES (Mar. 20 - Apr. 20) Choose not to quarrel at home this week. Go visit a punching bag instead, or go rock climbing, anything that will help burn off the excess emotional intensity that is available this week. Use your power for good and for communicating in new ways and you will accomplish much. Decide to fight about stuff just for fun and you’ll lose out on this influx of energy. TAURUS (Apr. 20 - May 21) Matters of the heart become about freedom and independence this week, just don’t over-react. It is a passing energy and you may want to remain objective until next week when the energy is different and you may be able to have a better perspective. GEMINI (May 21 - June 22) Be clear within yourself about what objectives you want to attain. Get clear, stay clear and trust that the Universe is helping you along the way. Your ability to learn and to expand your mind is highlighted right now, so take advantage and learn a new thing. CANCER (June 22 - July 23) This is a time of strong and deep emotions, not that you aren’t always inclined in that way. It is all just a bit bigger and more intense right now. Keeping this in mind, it is a great time to talk about all the ways you see a present situation, offering up your opinions and insights as necessary. Communicate from a healing place. LEO (July 23 - Aug. 23) You may be a little too close to a situation to fully understand what is really going on. This is okay as long as you don’t default to a position that somehow everything is your fault. Don’t get too self critical until you see how things fall out. Be kinder to yourself when you are talking to yourself about yourself. VIRGO (Aug. 23 - Sept. 23) You will have to communicate what your needs are and what is going on with you emotionally. So, come out of your head and get into your heart and start talking about your real deep needs. Say yes when you mean yes and no when you mean no. Emotional authenticity is your job this week. LIBRA (Sept. 23 - Oct. 23) The energy this week is a bit wacky, especially when it comes to relationships. You may want to take some extra alone time this week and ponder the nature of completion in your life. Is it time to finish up old
SCORPIO (Oct. 23 - Nov. 22) Wow, what a week! Your creative energy is in direct conflict with your desire for change and freedom. See if you can use your creative energy to enhance the things you want to change or how you can go about changing things. Follow the flow if you can – it will lead you out of the box. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22 - Dec. 21) Neptune is moving into a position which may give your intuitive energies a boost, however you will need to make sure you go beyond your fears and get to the good stuff. Your fears will come up first and it will be your job to tell those voices to shut up so you can hear the voices beyond them which are telling you the truth. CAPRICORN (Dec. 21 - Jan. 20) You will need to listen hard for the whispers of the Universe. On the surface things can seem quite difficult, yet take the moments of synchronicity as a sure sign from the Universe that you are on the right path. Stay focused in the now and know that the clock saying 2:22, or 11:11 when you look at it – these
IN THE NEWS
are winks from the Universe. Hold on to them. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20 - Feb. 19) For you this week may be all about clarity. Look for ‘ah ha’ moments as you see through the cloudy energy and all of a sudden know what you want and what you don’t want. Relationships may be highlighted, so wait for the clarity. PISCES (Feb. 19 - Mar. 20) Make a concerted effort to balance times of doing and doing with times of doing nothing. You will need balance this week and it will not come unless you make sure it does. Don’t freak out if nothing is going on, for there will indeed be something going on that you just can’t see yet. Reach for and trust the balance. Miscellaneous PRAYER TO THE BLESSED VIRGIN (Never known to fail) Oh, most beautiful flower of Mt. Star Wars Episode One – The Phantom Menace (PG-13) George Lucas continues to go back in time as he milks his Star Wars franchise for all it is worth. In this sequel – actually a prequel – Darth Vadar is only nine, for Cripe’s sake. They are all here: Obi-Wan Kenobi (Ewan McGregor), Qui-Gon Jinn (Liam Neeson), Anakin Skywalker (Jake Lloyd), who will later father Luke Skywalker and become known as Darth Vader. Also starring Natalie Portman. It’s fun, it’s magical, it’s in 3-D of course, and they’ll be lunch boxes, book bags, T-shirts, pens, light sabers and so on.

Chronicle (PG-13) Twenty-six-yearold Max Landis, the son of director John Landis, penned this over-thetop sci-fi movie about a group of teenagers who acquire superpowers, but it’s the 26 year-old director, Josh Trank who earns the kudos. A cast of unknowns, most notable Dane DeHaan, makes the script believable (more or less) and Trank’s innovations keep serious filmgoers on edge. There’s spills and chills, but the Landis/Trank paring makes them almost endearing. Pop Landis obviously got this film made for little
The Ides of March (R) Released in October, this ominous sounding political drama featuring George Clooney was perfectly placed to garner Oscar consideration. It’s about a presidential candidate trying to cover up a scandal (as if that ever happens in real life). The cast, led by Clooney (who also wrote and directed), and white-hot Ryan Gosling, is laced with Oscar friendly faces: Phillip Seymour Hoffman, Paul Giamatti, and Marisa Tomei among them. In the end the academy found the whole thing a little too precious, though Clooney earned a Best Screenplay nod along with Grant Heslov and Beau Willimon.
Now Playing The Woman in Black (PG-13) Daniel Radcliffe has chosen this neat little thriller to begin his post Harry Potter career, and it’s a wise choice indeed. Credit the director James Watkins’ deft hand, a taut screenplay, courtesy of Susan Hill and Jane Goldman, and the luminous presence of Oscar nominee Janet McTeer. Contraband (R) Mark Wahlberg is now a full-fledged manly tough guy – hell, he coulda brought down the 9/11 terrorists. And so he gets roles like this, wherein he displays nerves of steel while smuggling contraband in order to save his family. In the end he takes on “a treacherous criminal network of brutal drug lords, cops and hit men before his wife, Kate (Kate Beckinsale), and sons become their target,” according to the press release. Guess who wins.
