Imposter Purses

I was robbed on Hill Street this weekend. Swindled by the estate sale bandits of Southampton. Since this is our fashion week issue, I’ve decided to address a legitimate problem in the fashion industry, counterfeit designer goods. We all know that purchasing counterfeit designer products is wrong, yet a lot of people do it anyway. I’ve never been able to buy these knockoffs for so many reasons, like the human trafficking, loss of American jobs, copyright infringement or child labor that results from the sale of these types of items, but that’s a whole different rant. I would much rather save up for the real thing or engage in one of my favorite pastimes, bargain hunting. Living in Southampton, I feel, gives us great opportunities when it comes to bargain, thrift, and consignment shopping. I’ve come across some really great finds in my day. At the Lucia’s Angels handbag sale this summer, I purchased a leather Giorgio Armani tote for $8 and a Jimmy Choo handbag for $30. Original retail value would have been approximately $4000 on these two items combined. I’ve had them authenticated and they are 100 percent the real deal. Once I was at the ARF Thrift shop, they had a promotion where you could buy anything that would fit in a bag for $5. I walked out with a bag of fantastic blazers that would have originally retailed for over $2000. At Super Saturday this year I left with bags full of Trina Turk dresses for $20 a pop, about a 90 percent discount. These deals do exist and I’m really good at finding them . . . usually. My husband and I went yardsaling on Sunday. We stopped at an estate sale that seemed to have some

really amazing finds. The home was located on famed American painter William Merritt Chase’s Artist Colony which makes up the Southampton Art Village. It is currently on the market for $3.5 million. Other Art Village property owners have included, Kate and Andy Spade (Kate Spade, the handbag designer). The setting, as described by the home’s real estate listing: “private rose garden and swinging porch verandas portray a setting where guests can sit strewn amongst green privets and those famous secret hedges of the Hamptons socialites.” Yeah, that kind of rich. So when the women working the estate sale gave me a believable, yet really amazing, deal on what looked like four designer handbags, I took the bait. Spoiler alert, three out of four bags were complete fakes. I’m usually on my game when it comes to spotting counterfeits. I don’t know if it was the multi-million dollar home, the real bags mixed with the verywell-done fake bags, or the price points. But they got me, and they got me good. Beyond excited, I decided to take my new finds to the experts when I got home. I stopped by The Perfect Purse in Southampton. The Perfect Purse sells the best-of-the-best in used designer handbags and everything is guaranteed authentic. The verdict . . . Hermès, fake. Louis Vuitton, fake. Prada, real. Miu Miu, really fake. The kicker, the same women who sold me the bags had already brought them in for appraisal. She knew they were fake. She had lied to my face. “That’s a Louis Vuitton you know,” she said to me as I was browsing. Um, yes, I know. “You’re getting a really good

The Dratel Group, Inc. -Established 1979-

deal! Wear them in good health,” she told me as I handed her nearly half a week’s paycheck (before taxes). Wear them in good health?!? How about sell them in good conscience? If I were to visit Paris this winter, which I very well may, caught with that fake Louis Vuitton bag, I could have landed up to three years in prison and been stuck with nearly a $500,000 fine. I'm serious. We went back to the estate and

asked nicely for a refund. I was, of course, willing to keep the authentic items I purchased. She refunded us $250 for the extremely worn Hermès counterfeit but wouldn’t budge on the rest. I left behind the other fraudulent items. As I stated earlier, I have no use for a fake bag. Moral of the story, don't buy or sell fake designer items. It's not a victimless crime. Even when the victim is an innocent yardsaler.

SeptemberFest Comes To Southampton

By Emily Toy Southampton Village will be bustling next week as SeptemberFest comes to town, showcasing Southampton’s best in art, music, food, and history. Summer may be over, but visitors and tourists alike will have lots to do, see, eat, and listen to as cultural and civic institutions gather together to provide a weekend of fun. This year, the festival expanded to three days, chock full of pumpkin car ving, ar t shows, chowder contests, and concerts. Starting Friday, September 27, there’ll be an evening kick-off party with music by the Lone Sharks from 6:30 to 10 PM under the tent at Agawam Park. $30 in advance, $40 at the door. Saturday’s festivities will feature a “Concert In The Park,” with opening reggae band Project Vibe. New Life Crisis is slated to headline the show. Throughout the village, more live entertainment will include jazz ensembles, vocalists and Grammynominated performer Brandy Rymer with The Little Band That Could. A unique blend of magic and juggling will be provided by Jester Jim. “Taste of Southampton” food expo will be at Agawam Park, offering visitors a chance to sample food, wine and craft beer. The region’s best restaurants, cafes and chefs will also have food for sale. SeptemberFest continues through Sunday, September 29. Hours are 11 AM to 6 PM Saturday and Sunday. Admission is free and all ages are welcome. This year, the festival is sponsored in part by Wells Fargo, Suffolk County National Bank, BrandHampton, The Press News Group and Suffolk County. A portion of the proceeds raised from the festival will support the new Southampton Center. For additional information visit www.SouthamptonSeptemberfest. com.

Reel Deal

Thanks For Sharing (R) Our own Gwenyth Paltrow co-stars in this winning dramedy about men who cope with their neuroses, and how

it affects their relationships. Mark Ruffalo plays off Paltrow and the pair lights up the screen. Tim Robbins, Josh Gad, and Patrick Fugit play the other “guys” with aplomb. The director Stuart Blumberg has fashioned an adult film that isn’t gross, silly, or maudlin – and in this day and age that’s quite an achievement.

New To Theaters Blue Caprice (R) Alexander Moors wrote and directed a harrowing tale

based on the Beltway murders. He tells the tale through the eyes of the son, Lee Malvo, brilliantly played by Tequan Richmond. Isaiah Washington, as his father, John Allen Muhammed, is equally magnificent. In fact, the pair just might vie for the Best Actor statue. Don’t miss it.

New On DVD The Great Gatsby The season’s

first “big” movie – that is, a serious effort from Hollywood that carries with it serious Oscar credentials. Baz Luhrmann (Strictly Ballroom) directs and co-wrote the script (Yes, F. Scott Fitzgerald gets a credit) and Leonardo DiCaprio lands the coveted title role. Tobey Maguire plays the writer with aplomb, and Carey Mulligan is magnificent as Daisy Buchanan. Everything about the film sparkles -- the sets, the dialogue, the costumes, and the cinematography. This was produced to be a major Oscar contender except for one little thing – no one liked it, and it bombed.

Now Playing Hell Baby (R) This comedic take on the old haunted house genre is sometimes funny, too often sickening, and improvised to the point of embarrassment. We found ourselves rooting for the demons. Rob Corddry goes down with the ship. Jayne Mansfield’s Car (R) Billy Bob Thornton, who wrote, directed, and starred in Sling Blade, once again attracts an A-list of actors for his latest effort. Set in 1969, it is the story of two families that come together for a funeral. Robert Duvall, John Hurt, and a very scruffy Kevin Bacon give genuine performances, and, like Sling Blade, Thornton’s quirkiness and originality often shine through. Give it a try. The Lords of Salem Rob Zombie’s latest is a typically well done shockfest and gory beyond human boundaries. So what’s not to like? Winnie (R) This biopic of Winnie Mandela was envisioned as a star vehicle for Oscar winner Jennifer Hudson. Unfortunately, it became apparent to critics, and everyone involved, that this baby was DOA – it’s a certified bomb already. Terrence Howard, an Academy Award nominee, plays Nelson Mandela. Riddick (R) Vin Diesel is back for a third installment as the legendary anti-hero, and it’s another satisfying dose of all things violent. David Twohy, the writer and director, knows how to plot enough twists and turns to keep us occupied between the scenes of wanton slaughter, and Diesel was born to play the role. Go back and watch the others first, and then by all means catch this one in the theater.

THE INDEPENDENT Q Traveler Watchman

by Asher Lee ARIES (Mar. 20 - Apr. 20) Your emotions are high this week and you may be inclined to jump to someone’s defense or otherwise amp up an already emotionally charged situation. It may take a lot to hold yourself back since the energy is so big, yet you want to do your best. Just know that the emotional energy is very high, so some things that seem big right now may be no big deal next week. TAURUS (Apr. 20 - May 21) The energy is moving right now, your energy is moving. Take advantage of this time and get to the details of your life that you may have been putting off. Clean the house; weed the garden, or some other trivial, yet satisfying task. The mundane holds great rewards and you may finally have the time and the energy to get some stuff done – do it all with joy since is can be rare that you feel this way! GEMINI (May 21 - June 22) Hang out with a Scorpio and get romantic or just get all dressed up and go out on the town. This is the perfect time to promote yourself and your business, or any of your personal talents. So if romance is your goal, promote yourself and put yourself out there. If it is the business side of things that you seek, use this week’s energy to convince anyone of anything. CANCER (June 22 - July 23) You may certainly be feeling the need to be free and unrestricted this week, yet you may not be able to fully act on those feelings, at least not just yet. Use this energy to adjust your priorities so that you don’t fritter away this very useful energy on nonessentials. One step at a time is the mantra this week. LEO (July 23 - Aug. 23) This week you may be feeling a bit more nitpicky than usual, so do your best to take a breath and cut those around you a little slack. You can expect changes in your routine and again it’s a place where you may feel a little short tempered, so again breathe. This short energy will pass and until then do something physical to burn off the energy VIRGO (Aug. 23 - Sept. 23) There is an energy right now that can have you wanting to pick a fight for what you think is right. And you know you may be right, yet the picking the fight thing may not be the best way to get what you really need. Your vision,

your natural skill of seeing where we all need to go as humans is truly amazing right now. You will need to be patient as the rest of us try to catch up. Be patient. LIBRA (Sept. 23 - Oct. 23) No gossiping. Instead use this week’s energy to learn something new or teach something. Your mind is moving at peak efficiency, so put your mind to the task and allow yourself to experience some new things and seek out interesting people and let your curiosity run wild. Make the time to experience these new things, it will be a great gift you give yourself and you will have more to share with those around you. Remember to share. SCORPIO (Oct. 23 - Nov. 22) Dress to the nines this week and do seek out people in high places and use your charm to make connections. Romance is in the air and you may be feeling a bit frisky so go with that energy. Good food and good wine and good company are all highlighted this week, so allow yourself to have some fun. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22 - Dec. 21) Look up the word pedantic and then do your best not to go there. Your energy is leaning toward the overly critical, so try not to be exacting with those around your or their methods. Try to take it a bit easy on everyone. Just because you are wanting everything to be perfect right now doesn’t mean others are paying as close attention. CAPRICORN (Dec. 21 - Jan. 20) This can be an amazing time for you as long as you are willing to break down any of the structures in your life that are no longer useful. This is the time, break things down and build them up to be what you have always wanted and didn’t know how to make the changes. This is a time of profound change, so embrace this and use your energy to do significant things in a practical way. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20 - Feb. 19) Big and busy energy this week. Try to relax, although your mind will be kind of buzzing. Do some mental work so it doesn’t turn into anxiety. Best to find some kind of hobby to put this energy which is designed for figuring out puzzles, or you may use this energy to analyze everyone you know and that may not be too fun. Great energy for any kind of work or business, just don’t use it against

Today’s Birthday: James Gandolfini, 1961 To say he was typecast in “The Sopranos” is certainly not a reach – James Gandolfini’s parents were both from Italy and the family spoke Italian at home. Gandolfini grew up in New Jersey (duh!). Both his parents worked in schools — his mother in the cafeteria and his father a janitor. James played sports, acted, and was considered a Casanova in high school. He graduated from Rutgers – he worked as a bouncer in an on campus pub -- and went to acting school in Manhattan. He landed his first stage role in 1982, and appeared in several movies in supporting roles, most noticeably Get Shorty. He played a mob enforcer in The Juror the following year, earning an audition for a new HBO series being developed by David Chase. The show became phenomena, the first cable TV show to attract mainstream audiences. Gandolfini, cast as Tony Soprano, the head of the family, was a revelation. He earned two Screen Actors Guild awards, three Emmys, a Golden Globe, three Television Critics Award for Individual Achievement in Drama, and an American Film Institute Award for Actor Of The Year. The series ran for eight years, until 2007. Gandolfini worked steadily after that, landing a plum role in The Taking Of Pelham 123 and in the Oscar winning Zero Dark Thirty. He was vacationing in Italy last June with his son, Michael, when tragedy struck. A man who had a lust for life, Gandolfini was a voraciouseater and drinker. He suffered a fatal heart attack in their hotel room at age 52. those you love. PISCES (Feb. 19 - Mar. 20) Things are a bit crazy and big and new. It is all about the new things you want to bring in to your life. The ways you want to be a pioneer in some area of your life. It is all about change, so you will need to be open to these changes and you can know that the nervous energy that comes along with all this energy is just temporary, so stay grounded and embrace the change.
