New In Theaters Identity Theft (R) Melissa McCarthy (Bridesmaids), a huge comedic talent
literally and figuratively, hams it up in this over-the-top tale about a woman living life large with someone else’s credit card. Jason Bateman is the victim who hunts down and confronts the thief. There are a lot of laughs, but it’s kind of gross and ugly as well. Jon Favreau and Amanda Peet co-star.
New On DVD Ted Seth MacFarlane, the creator of “Family Guy” and the host of the Oscar ceremony this Sunday, tries

Really. There may be films that have been produced on flimsier plot lines, but we can’t think of any offhand. Nevertheless, MacFarlane has a sick sense of humor and some of his stuff is truly funny.
Now Playing A Good Day To Die Hard (R) In this, the fifth installment, John McClane heads to Russia to kick butt. It’s not the same without Bonnie Bedelia. Still, if you like the series, consider it a guilty pleasure. Yippie Ki-yay, comrade. Top Gun An IMAX 3D Experience (PG-13) Pete Mitchell is back, and so is archrival Val Kilmer as the two wreak havoc in the sky as fighter pilots competing for the Top Gun title. Kelly McGillis is back as well, and she’s still much too tall for Tom Cruise. The aerial scenes, always riveting, are even better in 3D, the soundtrack still rocks, and let’s face it - Cruise is terrific in the role. Hard to believe it’s been 27 years. Side Effects (R) * Steven Soderbergh (sex, lies, and videotape) has fashioned a deeply complex and often disturbing medicalpsychological thriller about a woman (Rooney Mara) whose world turns ugly after she is prescribed an antianxiety drug. Channing Tatum, as her husband, is terrific. Jude Law as the psychiatrist is also superb. This movie is extremely ambitious and difficult to follow, but the payoff is substantial. Catherine Zeta-Jones co-stars. Not to be missed.

THE INDEPENDENT Q Traveler Watchman
Todays Birthday: Kurt Cobain, 1967 The son of a waitress and car mechanic, young Kurt Cobain changed dramatically after his parents divorced when he was seven. Sullen and withdrawn, the formerly happy child lashed out at others and became somewhat of a bully in school. Cobain was an amazing artist, and the musical vein ran deep in his bloodlines – his uncle was in the band the Beachcombers, his aunt was a guitarist, and his great uncle was a professional singer. The youngster began playing piano and guitar at age four and began writing original material soon after. Cobain loved Led Zeppelin and in high school became infatuated with punk rock groups like the Ramones and The Stooges. After forming Nirvana, the group put out an album on an independent label that captured the sound that would come to be known as Grunge Rock. In 1991 Nirvana released Nevermind, fueled by Cobain’s song “Smells Like Teen Spirit.” The album became a musical phenomenon, and went on to sell an astounding 25 million copies in the United States and twice as many worldwide. Cobain, who always dabbled with hard drugs, married Courtney Love the following year and the pair became heavily addicted to heroin. Cobain exhibited suicidal tendencies on occasion but his erratic behavior intensified. He put a shotgun under his chin and pulled the trigger with his toes. The Father Of Grunge was 27 years old.

Green Chicken Curry With Basmati Rice Ingredients (serves 4) 1/2 white onion 3 cloves of garlic 2 jalapenos (seeded) 1 serrano chili (seeded) 2 tbsp siracha chili sauce juice of 1 lime 1/4 c brown sugar 1 bay leaf 1 tbsp lemon zest 1 tsp tumeric 1 bunch parsley 1 bunch cilantro 1 bunch mint 1 large piece of ginger peeled 1 stalk of lemon grass 1 14 oz can coconut milk 2 1/2 c Basmati rice 1 stick of cinnamon 1 c canola oil 1 c chicken stock 1 1/2 lb chicken thigh meat (skin removed)
Method Begin by adding the onions, garlic, jalapenos, serranos, siracha, lime juice, brown sugar, ginger lemon zest, herbs, and tumeric, together in a food processor. Slowly add canola oil as you blend the ingredients until you have created a paste consistency.
In a thick bottom saucepan whisk together the curry paste, coconut milk, and chicken stock. Season to your liking with salt and pepper. Add the lemon grass and chicken thighs to the curry and cook over medium heat for about 45 minutes or until the chicken thighs are cooked through. While the curry is cooking, focus on the rice. First you will need to rinse the rice. In a large mixing bowl cover the rice in cold water. Agitate with your hand and bail out the water. Repeat this process three or four times until the water remains clear after you agitate the rice. When you are finished rinsing, heat a large deep pot over high heat and coat the bottom of the pan with canola oil. When the oil begins to simmer, add the cinnamon stick and bay leaf, immediately followed by the rice. Stir the rice once to coat the grains with the oil. Cover the rice with water and allow it to cook over high heat. When the water completely cooks off, cover the rice in aluminum foil and set aside until you are ready to serve. When the curr y is finished, remove the lemon grass and spoon some of the curry over a plate of rice. Garnish with a sprig of cilantro.

Celebrity Dinner
Continued From Page B-4 with toasted coconut and agave. Next, a butternut squash ancho chili bisque with hulled pumpkin seeds. The soup was followed by homemade ricotta spinach nuddis with mixed heirloom tomatoes and a pistachio arugula pesto. The main course, an espresso rubbed merlot braised short rib with a wild mushroom polenta. For dessert, homemade strawberry shortcake with mandarin vodka marinated strawberries and a basil infused whipped cream. Between courses diners were entertained with a runway show by NYC Fashion Runway, who presented a retrospective couture collection from Berit New York by Brit Frady-Williams. A live jazz band performance by Angelo Di Loreto Quintet set the tone. Proceeds from each ticket went to support Food Bank for New York City. An after party took place with music by DJ HOVA T.
