Endless Bowls The annual Empty Bowls super soup event boasted a bounty of delicious offerings at the American Legion in Amagansett on Sunday. Cream of Roasted Cauliflower, Curried Red Lentil Dahl, and Vegan Root Vegetable were just some of the unusual entrees, with chowders and stews from an array of experts, complimented by fresh baked garlic knots from Pepperoni’s, pushing the yum-o-meter into the red. ARIES (Mar. 20 - Apr. 20) You will be forced to rely on your sixth sense to get you through this week’s maze. Take a rest from your labors and regain your strength. Recent distortions have made you review your accomplishments. Now you intuitively know what does not work for you. If you avoid distractions, you will sense what you must do. TAURUS (Apr. 20 - May 21) Now is a good time to keep secrets. Some eyes are not ready to see what you know. Keep your true intentions hidden. You have a tendency to resist assistance but open up your mind to allow outside contributions to your success. Just slow down and see what happens if you are more silent than usual. GEMINI (May 21 - June 22) Be thankful for news of your small but good fortune. Know that you are doing what you should be doing, even if it doesn’t seem to be bringing you what you want fast enough. Stay detached from feelings of lack if you want to avoid being weakened and overwhelmed by the respect and the envy of friends and foes alike.

CANCER (June 22 - July 23) Put distance between yourself and the situation you want to change. You are so close to it that you cannot see clearly. You need more facts before you can create the movement you need to ride to victory. Finally, something exciting is coming, but you must wait just a bit longer. Keep sending out positive energy. Really. LEO (July 23 - Aug. 23) You can and must look at things from a higher perspective. If no one seems to be listening, take your message to those deep enough to understand, even if it means a little trip. An adventure will take you out of these feelings of anger and judgment. Upset yourself because you’re right and you might as well be wrong. VIRGO (Aug. 23 - Sept. 23) Do not let anxiety weaken your resolve. Haven’t you always handled whatever life threw at you? The great Chinese generals factored defeat into their war plans and were victorious. Make your own war plan logical and coherent. Keep the lines of communication open. Forget that battle, it’s the war you want to win, right?

LIBRA (Sept. 23 - Oct. 23) You are attracted to mysteries and mystics this week. It sure does seem like magic, the way your wishes are coming into reality and your dreams are coming true. Keep practicing those visualizations before you go to sleep. Record your dreams because they will tell you a lot about what is going to happen in the near future. SCORPIO (Oct. 23 - Nov. 22) It will seem like a shortcut has materialized out of the blue, giving you the use of time and energy you have already allocated for other things. This will also save you a lot of headaches. Just do not expect this bridge across troubled waters to come in any pre-conceived form or you won’t see it, even if you are standing on it. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22 - Dec. 21) Feel safe by spending time in the protection of a supportive group that understands what you are trying to do. Don’t waste time explaining yourself to nonbelievers. You are developing more confidence and the capacity to love. Love will soon replace many of your doubts and fears with new faith. Play with the team. CAPRICORN (Dec. 21 - Jan. 20) There are rhythms and cycles in nature and this is not the season to plant new seeds with a long growing season. Try not to feel frustrated; it would really waste your time. You may not see the logic in waiting until next season, when it will become obvious. Concentrate on

solidifying the connections you already have. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20 - Feb. 19) Don’t put boundaries on your own abilities; there are plenty of people who want to do that for you. You must move forward. You need to release feelings you have been holding deep inside. This is not a sign of weakness, but of great strength. By acknowledging your pain, you will avoid making the same mistakes. PISCES (Feb. 19 - Mar. 20) If you can step back and take a look at your actions, you will see how you are being overly analytical. Stop it. Attention to detail is good, but picking something apart to see how it functions usually results in disaster. If you want things to change, fine, but don’t be too attached to how change happens. It’s O.K. to take a rest. NOTE: If you were born at the end or beginning of a sign, also read the sign before or after your birthday. Lawrence Welk, 1903
“And a one and a two . . .” A lot of young folks never heard of Lawrence Welk, but he was the most popular bandleader in America and hosted his wildly popular show, first on radio and then television, for 37 years. Legend has it Welk’s dad, a farmer, saved enough money to buy the youngster an accordion, and Welk, somewhat of a musical prodigy, was leading his own orchestra by the time he was 21. A German-American, Welk embraced the wholesome lifestyle of Middle America and its virtues. He married his high school sweetheart, appropriately named Fern, and they were still married when he died 61 years later. Welk ruled with an iron hand, decidedly “G” rated. He fired his popular “champagne lady” because she showed too much of her leg during a performance. He assured his live audiences that he never subject them to any “cheesecake” performances. Welk’s TV shows always followed a predictable pattern. He would dance with the “champagne lady” while bubbles would fill the air around them – his staff actually created the bubble machine. Each of his regulars would get a turn doing a contemporary song, with the Lennon Sisters being the most famous and popular. Welk would usually choose an audience member for a dance. Welk spoke with a German accent and never fully grasped English. Just as Yogi Berra became famous for twisting a phrase with his Yogi-isms, Welk has his Welk-isms like, “George, I want to see you when you have a minute, right now” and “Now for my accordion solo. Myron, will you join me?” Many of his orchestra members became familiar to regular viewers, and they were top-notch professionals – that’s the way Welk did things. The great clarinetist Pete Fountain and violinist Dick Kesner were among the regulars. Though one critic called his show “the squarest music this side of Euclid” Welk never lost his touch with the audience, consistently earning good ratings. When ABC purged the show in an attempt to get hipper in 1971, Welk syndicated it himself to 250 stations and the ratings remained high. A savvy businessman, Welk made money on a number of investments – he holds on patent of restaurants with musically themed menus. Viewers today can still find the syndicated show on the airwaves, with the orchestra, conducted by Welk, beginning tunes with his signature countdown: “And a one and a two.”

Longo & Grove Vincent Longo's paintings and Elaine Grove;s sculptures will open on Saturday at The Drawing Room in East Hampton. In his paintings, Longo explores the energy and symmetry of the grid, creating improvisational yet structured abstractions through painterly latticework, radiant color and a timeless sense of ornamentation. among the worst films ever made and is odds-on to sweep the Razzies. Let’s put it this way: It got a 9 on Rotten Tomatoes – out of 100. Tom Wilkinson must be wondering why on earth he agreed to be in it. Sienna Miller is such a lousy actress she actually thinks she’s good in this.
New On DVD St. Vincent * This film, easily one the best of the year, was for some reason tragically overlooked by the Academy, Bill Murray especially so. He is brilliant in the role of aging bachelor who drinks and gambles too much thrust into the role of babysitter for a precocious 12-year old. Melissa McCarthy is perfect as the single mom left with no choice but to trust the man. Jaeden Lieberher, as the boy, is the glue that holds the film together. Kudos to Naomi Watts for her turn as a Russian hooker with a soft spot. If you haven’t seen it, do so at once.

Holy Spirit, you who solve all problems, light all roads so that I can attain my goals. You who gave me the divine gift to forgive and forget all evil against me and that in all instances in my life you are with me, I want in this short prayer to thank you for all things as you confirm once again that I never want to be separated from you in eternal glory. Independent Dining Chili Ingredients 1 lb beef top round (cut into 1 inch cubes) 3 cloves of garlic chopped 1 10 oz can of kidney beans 1 onion (diced) 2 jalapenos (diced) 1 10 oz can of crushed tomatoes (strained) 1 ½ tbsp cumin 1 tbsp chili powder 2 tbsp paprika 2 tsp cinnamon 2 tbsp brown sugar 2 tbsp ground black pepper 3 tbsp vegetable oil 1 oz Worcestershire sauce 3 tbsp salt
Method First start by heating a sauté pan. Add half the vegetable oil and brown half the cubed top round. There will probably be too much meat to brown all at once so you will do it in two batches. When all the meat has been browned put all the ingredients together in a slow cooker, then deglaze the sauté pan with the strained tomato liquid. Simply cook on low for four to five hours in the slow cooker. Top with some cheese or sour cream if you like and enjoy.
