Paradise On Collins Avenue, South Beach
Independent/Kiko Ricote, Mark Wieland
The Ritz-Carlton South Beach By Laura Anne Pelliccio & Jessica Mackin Authentic luxuries and unmatched experiences will repeatedly be found at The Ritz-Carlton South Beach. Many from the Hamptons community are escaping to this classic-hip destination because of its exclusivity within the action-packed, glamorous South Beach, Miami, and its over-the-top level of service. In February The Independent took a trip to The Ritz-Carlton South Beach and the experience was unparalleled. Waiting in the lobby or relaxing by the pool? Guests might be offered a snack or beverage such as complimentary champagne or frozen grapes, along with a warm genuine smile. The Ritz-Carlton South Beach offers ultra-luxurious room accommodations. Ours was located on the pool level, where lounge beds are made available for sunning just outside the back door of our beautiful Lanai Suite. The beachfront pool and jacuzzi area offer an abundance of passed delicious hors d’oeuvres and water replenishments all day. Additionally, a lunch menu filled with spa-inspired bites and tropical beverages had us never wanting to leave. For when the sun gets a bit too hot,
the resort offers a sun protection station with choices of SPF and after sun gel along with beautifully displayed citrus water for hydrating. On a rare cool day, guests may receive a hot cocoa with homemade marshmallows. It’s all about the customer service at The RitzCarlton and it shows. The landmark 1953 Morris Lapidusdesigned hotel is as rich in history as it is amenities. The location has undergone a complete restoration while, like much of Miami, remaining loyal to its art-deco charm. Whether your room offers a view of the Atlantic, the pool or Collins Avenue, enjoy contemporary, warm furnishings inspired by South Beach’s vibrant ocean destination with the luxuries of home, accented with colors of blue, sea mist green and coral. At night, let your worries slip away as you sink into the goose down pillows and luxurious 100 percent cotton linens after experiencing the sumptuous marble bath. You won’t find yourself looking too far for something spectacular with its oceanfront infinity pool, the beachfront DiLido Beach Club, personalized spa services and the luxury of strolling to the best restaurants, bars, nightclubs, shopping and entertainment that Miami Beach has to offer.
Taste Of The Tropics
Independent/Dan Forer
The Ritz-Carlton Spa recently unveiled a head-to-toe sensory scrub and massage called Taste of the Tropics. The successful spa therapy was first created as a promotion within the spa but quickly turned into a signature experience by popular demand. The treatment welcomes any traveling snowbird into the warm tropical climate of South Florida. We were treated to the beach-prepping body renewal, enhanced with mango and guava ingredients from the effective body brand, Pure Fiji. Feeling us polished and relaxed, we were able to sip on hot tea or mimosas in the plush siesta lounge at the spa. There is also a full service salon. Spa goers may receive this five-star therapy and use of the amenity areas that offer lockers, spa robes, sandals, hair and skin products, aromatherapy showers, a steam room and sauna.

Miami Club Rum Event
We were invited to a party hosted by Miami Club Rum at The Ritz-Carlton South Beach, where we sipped rum cosmos alongside William Levy, who was introduced as the face of the brand, "Real Housewives of Miami" star Alexia Echevarria and "Orange Is The New Black" star Selenis Leyva.
SOBEWFF : Thrillist's BBQ & The Blues
For lunch we enjoyed a seaside view at the DiLido Beach Club at The Ritz-Carlton, South Beach. The sound of the surf adds to an inviting and relaxed Miami waterfront dining experience. The restaurant’s menu features a selection of fresh, succulent seafood, lamb and steak dishes, small plates ideal for sharing, salads, sandwiches and a creative cocktail list by master mixologist Ramsey Pimentel. DiLido is the ideal spot, with unmatched views, to watch a late afternoon sunset while enjoying a lovely meal or cocktails.
Opened in 2013, LDV Hospitality’s Dolce Italian is a welcoming café and restaurant located inside the Gale Hotel in South Beach. Dolce Italian provides a vibrant lounge and magnificent dining room that offers classic handcrafted cocktails and cuisine that is authentic and delicious. We sat down to a delicious and rich five course tasting menu and couldn’t have been more impressed. Italian-born executive chef Paolo Dorigato’s menu consists of fantastically made pastas like the pappardelle alla bolognese, brimming with braised beef, veal and pork, or a seafood risotto loaded with shrimp, scallops and calamari. Dessert is also not to be missed here. This summer, Gurney’s Montauk will launch its partnership with John Meadow’s LDV Hospitality to bring a new food and beverage experience to every aspect of the iconic resort. We look forward to the new addition.
Independent/Thrillist
Dolce Italian
While we were in town so was the South Beach Wine & Food Festival. Celebrating its sixth straight year at the SOBEWFF, Thrillist’s BBQ & The Blues event once again gathered their favorite chefs and restaurants to bring Miami jaw-trembling BBQ dishes paired with soulful blues. Hosted by Anne Burrell, attendees sampled BBQ creations from each chef and voted on their favorite while listening to live music by Diablo Dimes and The Bloodhounds and a set by DJ Haitian Hillbilly. Other notable guests included Jeff Mauro from "The Kitchen" and Ted Allen, host of "Chopped."

reason to boil over last week, you must keep the flame on “low” now or someone might get burned.
ARIES (Mar. 20 - Apr. 20) When in Rome - but you’re not, are you? Don’t be depressed because you missed that vacation. It would have been more work than play and you’re obviously in the mood for some fun. Treat yourself to some now. TAURUS (Apr. 20 - May 21) Alpha state or Alpha Centauri either way you’re right at home this week. You’d do well to stay off the Earth plane because apparently solid ground will crumble for those who think that’s all that is real. GEMINI (May 21 - June 22) The light you see at the end of this tunnel is really a keyhole. Your faith in yourself can unlock that door. Your gold is still where you found it, so lock that door behind you this time and keep what’s yours. CANCER (June 22 - July 23) Can’t understand why you were so clear and yet misunderstood? Directness such as yours is bound to be misinterpreted in a world of “second agendas.” Thanks for showing us how
we all should be doing it. LEO (July 23 - Aug. 23) Here’s a puzzle for you: What can you do when you’re too light for heavy work and too heavy for light work? To us, it means “no work at all,” but you may be able to do one of your precarious balancing acts. VIRGO (Aug. 23 - Sept. 23) You might as well have been wearing a T-shirt saying, “Come with me!” And you thought no one would notice your subtle signals. Now they’re all waiting to read the message on your back when you turn around. LIBRA (Sept. 23 - Oct. 23) Partly, it is them, but mostly it’s you. Didn’t you notice? You noticed everything else. Time to empty out those closets for your next yard sale - you’ll be surprised at how many bargains you have to offer. SCORPIO (Oct. 23 - Nov. 22) You will have to rapidly cool down to a rolling boil or risk blowing your crown. Even if you did have good
SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22 - Dec. 21) You’re right – it is now or never! It’s the perfect time to move. But don’t worry, your sturdy shell will protect you once again. Memories of two ill-timed similar moves haunt you, but the third time’s charmed. CAPRICORN (Dec. 21 - Jan. 20) Did you expect sympathy for the Devil, Angel eyes? Your horns are showing a little this week. Better cover them up with those wings or your friends will be praying for the success of your better half. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20 - Feb. 19) You’re finding your way these days, slowly and surely. A little detour up ahead will try even your patience, but veering off your campaign trail for a while is just what the Head Traffic Controller had in mind.

PISCES (Feb. 19 - Mar. 20) Spring? Chicken? Maybe (just a little!). Everything is going so well that you’re wondering if the sky might fall after all. today’s birthday by Miles X. Logan
Wilson Pickett, 1941
Good God! With the exception of James Brown and Little Richard, no American singer defined R&B like Wilson Pickett. His soulful voice, at times powerful but often tender and aching, has filled the airwaves since the early 60s, oftentimes crossing over from the R&B charts into the Top 100. Pickett, one of 11 children, lived an unhappy life, oftentimes sleeping in the woods to avoid a beating from his mother. He migrated to Detroit to live with his father when he was 14 and became infatuated with not only the street music but the gospel he heard in church. Little Richard was an early idol. Pickett began joining singing groups as a teenager, occasionally scoring a minor regional hit. One charted with Florence Ballard on background vocals: she joined the Supremes a short time later. Pickett didn’t just croon; he wrote and later produced songs, and his original music often reflected the heartbreak he endured as a child. He sent a demo to Jerry Wexler at Atlantic Records, and “If You Need Me” became a huge hit – for Solomon Burke, Atlantic’s top male vocalist at the time. Pickett was crushed. In 1965 though, Pickett penned, with the help of legendary guitarist Steve Cropper, a song widely considered to be among the best R&B recordings ever made. “In The Midnight Hour” shot to the top of the charts, and has been revived hundreds of times since. In fact, the band Wexler assembled for the studio recording was the band John Belushi and Dan Akyroyd used in the movie The Blues Brothers. Wexler moved Pickett to a studio in Muscle Shoals, AL, along with some other artists including Aretha Franklin. There, with a young slide guitarist named Duane Allman sitting in, Pickett exploded. His “Land of 1000 Dances” became an even bigger hit than “Midnight Hour” and his version of “Mustang Sally” also became a million-seller. Before sales even subsided Pickett released “Funky Broadway” and it also shot up the charts. As the decade ended the public’s infatuation with R&B and Soul Music waned. Pickett stayed on top with a stirring rendition of the Beatles “Hey Jude,” another megahit. Pickett was not a happy man. He carried loaded weapons most everywhere he went, he fathered six children, he hit and killed a pedestrian while driving drunk and did jail time. A 1999 comeback album, It’s Harder Now received a Grammy nomination. He continued to perform in public, though sporadically, until he became too ill to travel. He died from a heart attack when he was 64. His songs endure: they have been recorded by the likes of Led Zeppelin, Van Halen, the Rolling Stones, Aerosmith, the Grateful Dead, Booker T. & the MGs, Genesis, Creedence Clearwater Revival, Hootie & the Blowfish, and Bruce Springsteen.

The Wrecking Crew * (NR) A documentary about the greatest band you’ve never heard of: consider this group of studio musicians recorded the Grammy winning “Record of The Year” six consecutive years. When you hear the music of bands like The Beach Boys, The Association, Sonny and Cher, Simon and Garfunkel and many more, these are the guys who really played the instruments. From the best selling book. If you love music don’t miss it. Featuring Cher, Brian Wilson, Mickey Dolenz (The Monkees) and many more. Incidentally, Leon Russell and Glen Campbell are Wrecking Crew alumni.
Unfinished Business (R) You know the trailer with Vince Vaughn and Dave Franco that makes it seem like this movie will be mildly amusing? Forget about it. This may rank among the worst films ever made and is odds-on to sweep the Razzies. Let’s put it this way: It got a nine on Rotten Tomatoes – out of 100. Tom Wilkinson must be wondering why on Earth he agreed to be in it. Sienna Miller is such a lousy actress, she actually thinks she’s good in this.

Bridgehampton Chamber Music Festival
Long Island’s longest-running classical music festival launches a new spring series this year. The Bridgehampton Chamber Music Festival, which since 1984 has taken place every summer in the beautiful seaside setting of the East End, will inaugurate BCMF Spring with two Sunday concerts, on Sunday and April 26. The two programs will feature the festival’s signature mix of renowned and up-and-coming artists (all of them BCMF alumni). On Sunday, the festival’s founder and artistic director, flutist Marya Martin will be joined by Naumburg Competition winner pianist Gilles Vonsattel, New York Philharmonic Principal Viola Cynthia Phelps and Principal Cello Carter Brey, and rising violinist Sean Lee for a program of Mozart and Mendelssohn, including Mozart’s Flute Quartet and Piano Quartet in G Minor, selections from Mendelssohn’s Songs Without Words for cello and piano, and Mendelssohn’s Piano Trio in D minor. “We are so excited to open our doors to music lovers from around the region for our new spring series,” said Martin. “Widening the scope of the festival while continuing to offer the community the finest repertoire interpreted by some of the best chamber musicians performing today is a dream come true.” For regular tickets, priced at $40 and $50, and information on student tickets, visit www.bcmf.org or call 212-741-9403. Meanwhile, spread the chicken strips out evenly on a sheet tray, drizzle with the remaining olive oil and put them in the oven to bake for twenty minutes with the potatoes. While this is happening you can make your peanut sauce by combining the chicken stock, peanut butter, soy sauce, and sesame oil in a small sauce pot and heat it gently over a low flame. When the chicken and potatoes are done remove them from the oven. Cut the potato cake into four to serve. Plate the chicken, potato and arugula. Squeeze the lime juice into your peanut sauce at the last minute. Drizzle the peanut sauce over the chicken and arugula. Enjoy.
with 1/4 c water. Mix the course ground bread crumbs and rice crumbs together, and season to your liking with salt and black pepper. Each piece of chicken will be breaded by first dusting the chicken with the all purpose flour. After shaking off any excess flour dip the chicken in the egg wash and let any excess drip off. Coat generously with the rice and bread crumb mixture. Once you have breaded all the chicken take a look at the sweet potatoes, at this point the potatoes in the pan can be molded into a disk shape using a rubber spatula. Once you have done this, sprinkle with another dusting of sugar and return to the oven for another twenty minutes.
