East Hampton’s Joe Zucker was a busy man at the end of February. As assistant coach of the Bridgehampton High School basketball team, Zucker was busy not only coaching, but also scouting would-be opponents in the state playoffs. But Zucker’s day job is even more time consuming: he is an artist of international renown. In fact, Zucker is represented in numerous national and international museums including The Chicago Art Institute, The Museum of Modern Art, The Metropolitan Museum, The Jewish Museum, Bard and the Whitney -where he has shown a staggering five times at the Biennual. His latest exhibition, at the
prestigious Mary Boone Gallery, “The Emperor Descending a Staircase,” opened March 1 and will run through April 26. Zucker moved to East Hampton from Manhattan in 1983. He’s had one man shows at the Parrish Art Museum and Guild Hall and has been included in numerous group shows. He has moderated museum panels and given talks on various subjects. Zucker has served as a silent advisor for both institutions. One of his suggestions produced the Robert Rauschenberg exhibition at Guild Hall. As a young child Zucker attended classes at the Art Institute of Chicago. He received his B.F.A. and M.F.A. from the School of the Chicago Art Institute. Zucker has taught
in numerous institutions i n c l u d i n g Har vard, Yale, Brown, Stony Brook NYU and School of Visual Arts in New York. Zucker will receive an honorary Doctor degree from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago on May 16. His latest exhibition references Marcel Duchamp’s “Nude Descending A Staircase,” a painting famously excoriated for its deconstruction of representation when it was displayed at the Armory Show exactly 100 years ago. Since the late 1960s, Joe

Zucker has devised his own startling ways to fracture a chosen image, o f t e n through some imposition of a grid. For the current series of paintings he continues a process of physically breaking down not just the ostensible subject -- here, fluted Doric columns -- but the materials of painting itself. Using panels of gypsum board (an eight-by-two-foot format is used for works depicting paired columns; a four-foot square format depicts colonnades), Zucker scores the surface into a quarter-inch grid, then picks off the top layer, exposing the porous core. Each tiny square is painted with watercolor in a broad tonal range from black to white, with only an occasional leaning toward color. The nuanced shading imposes dimension to the columns, The broken column serves as a metaphor for the historic empires for which the individual paintings are named. The magnitude of these empires is palpable in the over one million “pixels” (the squares of the grid) that comprise the series’ dry fresco-like surfaces. The critic Brooks Adams called the new exhibition, ”profound, moving, and deeply satisfying . . . this show strikes deep chords -- the aligning of the course of the art world with the course of empire was disturbing and very, very subtle.” Relevant to understanding these works is that Zucker endured a detached retina while developing the series. His ideology that the material and image of painting are vulnerable became sharply in accord with the physical deterioration of his vision. The exhibition, at 745 Fifth Avenue, will continue through April 27. (For further information contact Ron Warren at the Gallery, or visit www.maryboonegallery.com.) Meanwhile, Zucker readies yet another hat: his annual pilgrimage to Tofte, MN where he is considered an expert Wall-Eyed Pike fisherman.

Independent / Kitty Merrill
For Those About To Rock: Hampton Daze’s resident rockers Emily Toy and Kitty Merrill head banged their way west on Saturday to attend a night of funk, punk, hip hop and alternative sounds. Four bands took the stage at 89 North in Patchogue Village -- Testify, A Rage Against The Machine tribute band, NonStop to Cairo, a favorite at last year’s Montauk Music Festival, The Native Alien Tribe, and the hip hop collective Ancient Tongue, introduced by the poet Clarity. It was billed as “a night of music for the wicked,” so Indy and Hampton Daze had to be there.

yourself centered. When you feel that energy to go to the outer edges, do your best to stay balanced. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22 - Dec. 21) Alright. Enough thinking already. Self-doubt won’t serve you and all that over- thinking is born of the self doubt. Trust yourself to handle future situations and know that you will know what to do when it is time to do something.
by Asher Lee
Today’s Birthday: Fred Rogers, 1928 It was always “a beautiful day in the neighborhood” no matter where you lived as long as Fred “Mister” Rogers was on your television. Rogers was born and raised in Latrobe, Pennsylvania, and graduated from Dartmouth before earning a B.A. in Music Composition from Rollins College. His first calling was to be a minister. He went to seminary school and was ordained by the Presbyterian Church. Rogers was shocked by some of the things he saw on TV, and he eventually gravitated toward the industry, writing music and working primarily on shows geared toward children. It wasn’t long before Rogers decided to branch into live TV. His idea was to host a wholesome show that children would not only enjoy, but also learn from. Wearing sneakers and his trademark cardigan sweater – knitted by his mother – “Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood” debuted in 1968. Soon, his opening song, “Won’t You Be My Neighbor?” was heard in millions of homes. The show ran for 33 years, earning Rogers four Emmys and a Lifetime Achievement Award. Rogers died in 2003, not long after he retired from television. May God Bless. ARIES (Mar. 20 - Apr. 20) All the energies come together this week. See what you can combine for greatest success. Use up your talents and be creative, this energy is ideal for whatever you want to accomplish. TAURUS (Apr. 20 - May 21) This week’s energy finishes up an opportunity to spend some time alone and hear your inner voice. Listen hard and take the time for yourself before everything starts to get very busy. GEMINI (May 21 - June 22) Look for moments of clarity in an otherwise foggy time. The clarity begins to return and you can make the most of it if you will simply wait for it, rather than moving forward without all the information. CANCER (June 22 - July 23) A very energizing week is in store. Catch that wave of energy and put yourself out there. Testing your beliefs

and newfound ideas in the world is where it is at. LEO (July 23 - Aug. 23) Bravery, courage: those are words associated with your sign, that big lion energy; and this week you will have the chance to exercise those muscles. Be brave and take a stand.
CAPRICORN (Dec. 21 - Jan. 20) You are strong enough to handle all that is going on. Take some alone time if you need to refuel. You will survive this experience and you will be better when you come out the other side. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20 - Feb. 19) You really do not have to defend yourself or your choices. If you catch yourself justifying yourself, know that
SCORPIO (Oct. 23 - Nov. 22) Think balance. Do your best to stay away from extremes and keep

IN THE NEWS
The Sapphires (PG-13) A feel good movie about an Australian Aboriginal girl group that travels to Vietnam to entertain the troops in 1968. It’s predictable, but it’s heart-warming, and the Weinstein Company claims it’s based on a true story, which means it’s probably not.
New In Theaters The Call (R) A 9-11 operator takes a call from a terrified teenaged girl and leaps into action. This is a starring vehicle for Halle Berry, and nothing more. Still, it’s an intense drama and passable entertainment for a damp winter night.
Searching For Sugar Man The winner of the Best Documentary Oscar is, quite frankly, one of the more ridiculous films ever to be honored. It’s about an obscure Detroit musician circa 1970 who achieves widespread success in South Africa without ever knowing it. “Bigger than the Rolling Stones” one producer says. “The best musician ever” another raves. It’s all wildly exaggerated, and the songs, though they are somewhat original, were ruined by the producers who filled the soundtracks with oboes, strings and the like. And his name was Sixto Rodriguez, not Sugar Man. It’s a farce masquerading as the real thing.
Now Playing Spring Break (R) A trio of best friends who dorm together in college set off for spring break with adventure on their minds. They run into a rapper (James Franco, hopelessly miscast) and get more than they bargain for. It sounds like we’ve seen it all before, but young filmmaker Harmony Korine, a major new talent, has plenty of tricks in his bag.
