The Harnicks’

Independent/Matt Harnick

If you’ve visited New York City, you’ve passed by what she sees – a street musician, reflections in a puddle, graffiti, swans in the park; the Manhattan cityscape. But, as Alan Alda observed, “You might know this city, but until now, you’ve never really seen it.” About four years ago Beth Harnick Dorn gave her mom, actress and painter Margery Harnick, a digital camera. Since then, said the East Hampton/New York resident, “ I can’t stop taking photographs.” “She can’t stop taking photographs,” echoed her husband Sheldon, a Pulitzer Prize, Tony, and Grammy award winning lyricist. “She’s still taking photographs,” offered their son Matt. Margie’s lifelong interest in photography – she and her sister shared a baby brownie as children – exploded once she got her hands on a Lumix digital camera and turned her artist’s eye towards the city. “I started photographing our neighborhood, all over the city. I kept showing them to Sheldon and he said, ‘Oh my god, that’s like poetry.’” And The Outdoor Museum (not your usual images of New York) was born. The couple created their own vir tual museum, tur ning their combined talent towards quirky views and urban mar vels – St. Patrick’s Cathedral reflected in a building across the street, a homeless woman window shopping at Bulgari, fireworks seen from their apartment window, lovers kissing outside a stage door, mannequins, landmarks, swans in Central Park. As Rod Stewart sang, “Every picture tells a story, don’t it?” In The Outdoor Museum, Sheldon tells the story of each section of photographs with poetry, describing the masterworks of Manhattan that offer “banquets for the eye brandy for the brain

CALENDAR

candy for the soul and manna for the heart.” As his parents compiled pictures and poems, Matt came forward to provide the technical assistance, working with massive computer files, but always with Margie’s directive, “no fakery at all.” Of course there isn’t; fakery is the last thing you’d find in the Harnicks. Married 46 years, they met working together on a play. Spend time with them and you can’t stop thinking of the phrase, “the cutest couple.” Their bond is affectionate and playful, as delightfully described in the book’s foreword by Mike Nichols: “ . . . through the marriage of pictures and poems, the book itself expresses some of the complex wonders of two into one. A story, which Sheldon told me so long ago that both of them have forgotten it, illustrates for me the pleasures that this great adventure holds for those who fully invest in it. On a quiet evening at home in a cold month, Sheldon said to Margie, ‘It’s so nice, the time we have together sharing silence and music and doing our work. It makes me happy.’ ‘For your information,’ said Margie, ‘for the past week, I have not been speaking to you.’ “And that’s what a true marriage does. It turns conflict into laughter, time into memory, and two people into a searchlight, showing the rest of us the horizon in wonder and joy.” Meet the Harnicks and take a glimpse into The Outdoor Museum from 4 to 6 PM at Guild Hall in East Hampton this Saturday for the opening of an exhibition that includes a selection of photographs from The Outdoor Museum. Speaking to The Independent recently, the Harnicks grinned at the thought of compiling an Outdoor Museum sequel. Margie’s still taking pictures. She can’t stop. “You walk into something and you know. You have to take that picture.” kmerrill@indyeastend.com

asked to get even more creative, look at things from different and ‘out of the box’ places. There is a more creative solution, so ponder it for a bit. Also try to follow the energy this week, doing what ‘feels’ right, rather than only do what you ‘have’ to do.

by Asher Lee

Today’s Birthday: Tim McGraw, 1967 His Daddy, Tug, a member of the New York Mets, was famous for coining the phrase “You Gotta Believe.” But Tim McGraw has a way with words as well – he’s one of the most popular country crooners in the world. McGraw was raised by his mother, Elizabeth “Betty” Ann D’Agostino, and didn’t know who his real father was until he was 11. Tug denied he had fathered the child, but as Tim grew older, it became apparent – the son looked just like his father. The two became close until Tug’s death. Tim was a fine athlete and went to college on a baseball scholarship. As legend has it, he picked up a guitar one day and was hooked. Soon he was writing songs and playing in clubs, and with the help of his father got a record deal. He’s been a fixture on the best selling list ever since. McGraw has three Grammys, 11 CMA awards, and has had 21 hit singles. His biggest score was marrying Faith Hill – the two embarked on a tour together and it was one of the highest grossing tours in the history of music. McGraw once said, “You know not having my real dad around made me want to be a great dad. That is what I am - a dad, first and foremost, before anything else.” ARIES (Mar. 20 - Apr. 20) Know thyself is this week’s mantra. Know who you are and what you can and can’t do. Trust that you have been made to be exactly who you need to be and don’t be afraid to try new things, just in case there is something new you can discover about yourself TAURUS (Apr. 20 - May 21) Magic is in the air, so look for coincidences and other synchronicities. I know you don’t go in for all that woo-woo kind of stuff, yet this week may make a believer out of you. GEMINI (May 21 - June 22) Look toward your career goals for the fulfillment you seek right now. You may also want to broaden your definition of success. Are you including emotional and intellectual success in your plans? Spiritual success, even? Think about it. CANCER (June 22 - July 23) The fears abound this week, yet it may all be in your head and not in reality. So check it out and pay attention to how your brain works. Are you going to worst case scenarios straight out of the gate? Take a good look at your fears and where they come from.

LEO (July 23 - Aug. 23) This may be a week where you can give yourself permission to go for the drama. Making your energy all big and intense is necessary now and again and this may be just the time. Roar if you need to roar and get over the judgments you may have about such behavior. VIRGO (Aug. 23 - Sept. 23) It is all good. I know it may seem hard to believe that right now, but trust that all paths lead to Rome and there is nothing that can keep you from what is truly yours. Look for the win/win in all situations. It is there, you just have to look hard enough LIBRA (Sept. 23 - Oct. 23) Ask for help when you need it. There is a very loving vibe all around you and yet with Saturn still in your sign it may be difficult, if not impossible, to feel. You can trust those that do, indeed, love you to help you in any way they can. Just reach out SCORPIO (Oct. 23 - Nov. 22) So perhaps you have reached the end of your creative rope. It may be true that some answers seem out of reach. But this week you are being

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22 - Dec. 21) Home is the place to be. This is a week to restore your power and come back to yourself if you have been out of sorts lately. Find a sacred space, or create one and fill it with your favorite things so that you can come back to center and feel the power you have inside to handle all that is going on. CAPRICORN (Dec. 21 - Jan. 20) Authenticity is key, so leave the guilt and feelings of obligation out of things as you decide what to do next. If you took everyone else’s opinion out of the deciding, what would your true inner self like to do? This is your authentic voice so listen to it. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20 - Feb. 19) Remember who you are? All that has brought you to this place, all you have gone through to get here?

May 2, 2012 B-13

Do you remember? Make sure you do, because your past has proven to you that you can trust yourself into the future. Know who you are, remember all that you are – that’s your job this week. PISCES (Feb. 19 - Mar. 20) Make sure you eat right this week. Your emotional energy and your intuitive energy are high and it may take more protein and good eating to balance things. Listen to your body and indulge its cravings for it will give you good advice, you just have to listen. NOTE: If you were born at the end or beginning of a sign, read the sign before or after your birthday. Asher Lee is a professional Astrologer and Tarot reader. After receiving his Culinary Arts Degree from Johnson & Wales University, Pims began his career at Lahiere's, a 90 year old French restaurant. Pims fine tuned his skills at the legendary Chez Josephine where he found his passion for local sustainable ingredients while reinventing traditional dishes. Most recently Chef Richard was at Stanton Social in NYC. East Hampton Point Opens on Friday May 11 for dinner. Navy Beach Navy Beach in Montauk celebrates Cinco de Mayo with food and drink

Coming Soon Marvel’s The Avengers (PG-13) Summer must be near because Hollywood is unleashing its

blockbusters, beginning with this allstar collection of Marvel superheroes -- Iron Man, The Incredible Hulk, Thor, Captain America, Hawkeye and Black Widow. Robert Downey Jr.

May 2, 2012 B-17

reprises his Iron Man role, and he’s joined by Mark Ruffalo (The Hulk), Chris Hemsworth (Thor), Jeremy Renner (Hawkeye), and Chris Evans (Captain America). The perceived risk would be too much star power on one screen, but the cast meshes perfectly and the film is lots of fun. Credit writer/director Joss Whedon. Samuel L. Jackson co-stars. It’s typical blockbuster fare – loud, incredible special effects, epic battles – but it’s a blast.

New In Theaters

Think Like A Man (PG-13) Steve Harvey’s best selling book is a surprise hit in theaters, though it suffers from director Tim Story’s excesses – clichéd dialogue and one-dimensional dialogue. Story (Barbershop, Fantastic Four) knows how to mine for laughs, and the cast, which includes Harvey and Kevin Hart, make the most of the opportunities. It has its moments.

New On DVD

The Iron Lady Meryl Streep, of course, nails the role of former Great Britain Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher – she earned the Best Actor Oscar for her performance. If truth be told though, an uninspired script keeps the film from ever really taking off.

The energy for the evening will be pumped up by celebrity DJs Nick Cohen and Alexandra Richards, daughter of Rolling Stones guitarist Keith Richards and famous fashion model Patti Hansen. Event chairs for the star-studded event are Kim Pape, Lisa Schifter, Lyss Stern, Samantha Yanks and Gail Tobias.
Make sure to wear your hottest “hipster” outfit for a night which will be a huge departure from the eternal “dinner dance.” The entertainment and clubby decor will make a “rocker” out of the most refined party goers. Complimented by open bar and fabulous, sumptuous hors d’oevures, this is an event you do not want to miss! Regular tickets are $250 and up and Jr. tickets, for those 30 and under, are $125. A private cabana area which will include dedicated staff with food and bottle service, is available to all sponsors that donate $5000 and up. For tickets and further information contact Linda B. Shapiro at LBS Productions, 631-329-5480 or email lbspro@optonline.net. For more information on the South Fork Natural History Museum visit www. sofo.org.
