Bridgehampton Chamber Music Festival On Tap Some of the concerts will take place outdoors at the Bridgehampton museum (left); Marya Martin, the festival founder. By Rick Murphy Music, as it has always done, evolves and changes. The Bridgehampton Chamber Music Festival has evolved and grown well. Yet for 32 years, some constants have remained: one, the finest in classical music, traditional and new, performed by established musicians and emerging new talent. Another constant -- Festival founder
and Artistic Director Marya Martin, an internationally acclaimed flutist who manages to balance the roles of chamber musician, festival director, soloist and teacher. “It’s both been a long time and flown by quickly, as we have done so much in the last 32 years,” Martin said this week. The growth has been startling. “We started with two concerts over
one weekend, and now have almost a dozen concerts over the period of a month each summer, and have just launched a new spring series in Bridgehampton this year,” Martin related. “We star ted with four musicians, and this year we will have 55 musicians coming to the East End from around the world to make music at our festival and spring series.” One focus for the BCMF is countering preconceived notions and stereotypes about classical music, particularly by younger listeners. “We have a mission to bring younger people to concerts, and are communicating through social media and YouTube to get our message out. Our goal is to get them in the door, since once they are in the room we know they will come back,” Martin

said. Towards that end, one performance this season will feature Pink Floyd’s Roger Waters who has taken a touchstone work of the 20th Century, Stravinsky’s The Soldier’s Tale and has reworked the text in a way that updates it for today’s audiences. That performance will take place Friday, August 14, at the Channing Sculpture Garden. Also new this summer are the festival’s newest CDs, the fifth and sixth on the BCMF Records label. Seascapes is devoted entirely to the music of Kevin Puts, the 2012 Pulitzer Prize-winning composer whose music has been a BCMF favorite. BCMF Live 2014 features two highlights from last summer’s festival, including the world premiere of Howard Shore’s A Palace Upon the Ruins for Mezzo-Soprano, Flute, Cello, Piano, Harp, and Percussion, a BCMF co-commission. “We launched our recording label, BCMF Records, in 2012, and have released six CDs to date. We cover repertoire from the Baroque to music written this year, and every music lover will find treasures in our output,” Martin said. “They can be purchased on our website, or on Amazon, iTunes, or most other online outlets.” This year’s program features 11 concerts beginning July 29 with a free outdoor concert at the Bridgehampton Museum. On August 1 the annual benefit for the BCMF will take place at Atlantic Golf Course beginning at 6:30 PM. The next day, Sunday, the music of Bach and Mendelssohn will be performed at the Bridgehampton Presbyterian Church, also at 6:30 PM. There will be another concert at the church August 5. Check the “Coming Attractions” section of The Independent each week for additional concerts or visit the festival website, www.bcmf. org. Tickets may be purchased on the festival’s website, or by calling 631537-6368. A student ticket price of $10, introduced this spring, will be available for most concerts.

St. John was this year's fashion Honoree at the 11th Annual Samuel Waxman Cancer Research Foundation's A Hamptons Happening event. St. John is an American luxury house that was founded in 1962 on the premise of a simple, yet elegant knit dress. Over the years, the brand has evolved, but the basis for the collection remains the same today as it did from the very start — updated classics, timeless and elegant clothing that appeals to women all over the world. “As philanthropy is a significant and deeply ingrained part of the St. John brand, we are incredibly honored to be a part of the eleventh annual A Hamptons Happening fundraiser. We are thrilled to support the Samuel Waxman Cancer Research Foundation, as it is an amazing international organization and truly a pioneer in funding cutting-edge cancer research,” said Leta Saveikis, Vice President of Retail - Boutiques for St. John. This year the event broke previous fundraising records in its 11-year history, bringing in over $500,000 for cancer research. Find St. John on Instagram or Twitter with handle @StJohnKnits or Facebook and Pinterest as St. John Knits.

ARIES (Mar. 20 - Apr. 20) You need to experience real generosity. Fulfillment is found through sharing. Drop all pretenses. Give of yourself and from your heart, if you can. If not, ask for what you need. Be thankful for the generosity of others. TAURUS (Apr. 20 - May 21) By uniting and balancing your inner harmony with the skills you have learned in life you can achieve real success. Hard work is demanded to attain this, but material rewards and inner peace can be yours with just a little extra effort this week. GEMINI (May 21 - June 22) You need to personally manipulate things to make your desires your reality. Tap the infinite energy of the universe with visualization. Inventory your resources. Use them to manifest the creative control you seek. CANCER (June 22 - July 23) You need to empathize with human frailty, yours included. Think with your heart, not your head. Learn how those in need cope with life’s challenges and share your knowledge. Be aware of getting too close. You are quite sensitive now. LEO (July 23 - Aug. 23) Though obstacles may stand in the way, look forward to achieving a distant goal. Work shared is work halved. Shared burdens are lighter; a friend or a fellow worker will be helpful. Satisfaction will be the reward of consistent effort with a partner. VIRGO (Aug. 23 - Sept. 23) Express your needs and others will help you answer them. Look deep within yourself and you may find the resources that you must share to know success. Fulfillment will be found through your generosity or that of others. LIBRA (Sept. 23 - Oct. 23) You need to be as lucky as you are skilled, maybe even more so in this instance. Luck comes most often when opportunity, preparation and skill meet. Study the various arts and sciences devoted to cycles and timing. PISCES (Feb. 19 - Mar. 20) You need to attain a degree of understanding that enables you to graduate to a higher level and enjoy real success. Reel Deal

New To Theaters
Irrational Man (R) Ok, we’ll just come right out and say it – we hate Joaquin Phoenix and every movie he’s ever been in. On the other hand, we are unabashed fans of Woody Allen and worship the master. But our unwavering hatred for all things Phoenix is so overwhelming that it trumps Woody and his latest movie. Unfortunately for the Woodman, critics agree – it’s a bomb.
Coming Soon
Southpaw (R) Another boxing movie, this one with Jake Gyllenhaal. You know the drill – he’s the champ with the glamorous wife and a bunch of money, he loses everything, and he has to rebuild his career from the bottom. Forest Whitaker co-stars.

The Second Best Exotic Marigold Hotel* Hollywood meets Bollywood in this sequel, which is every bit as good as the original. It continues the story of Sonny (Dev Patel of Slumdog Millionaire fame ), who created the first hotel geared towards retiring Westerners, as he tries to arrange financing for a second hotel. Once again, he shares the spotlight with some of the industry’s finest actors, Judi Dench, Maggie Smith and Bill Nighy among them. Along the way Sonny has to deal with a rival, an upcoming marriage, and a mysterious newcomer, ably played by Richard Gere. If you loved the first one you’ll love this; if you haven’t seen the first one, watch them both.

Trainwreck (R) America’s hottest young comedian, Amy Schumer, gets her star vehicle courtesy of producer Judd Apatow and with SNL alumni Colin Quinn and Bill Hader in tow. Schumer wrote the script and has given the cast enough one-liners to fill a “Comedy Central” marathon. It’s a hit. Mr. Holmes (PG-13) Ian McKellen (Lord Of The Rings) gets another shot at the Oscar in this tender portrayal of the aging detective circa 1947 who grapples with nuclear bombs and old age. Bill Condon (Gods And Monsters) directs with a deft hand. Laura Linney delivers a brilliant turn. Sherlock Holmes as we’ve never seen him before. Unfortunately the mystery inherent in most of the others is lacking here. Minions (PG-13) Universal’s big ticket summer animation feature suffers in comparison to the Disney/Pixar masterpiece Inside Out.
Amy (R) Amy Winehouse only released two albums, but she made her mark in popular music. Her chaotic life – destined to end early – makes for compelling theater. This documentary by Asif Kapadia works for fans and non-fans alike. Magic Mike XXL (R) Yes, ladies, don’t pretend you are casually reading this. You know damn well it’s Channing Tatum playing a male stripper, and you are hoping you know what “XXL” stands for, too. Co-stars Matt Bonner and Alex Pettyfer errr . . . dance, too. There is a plot somewhere in there but you don’t really care, do you?

Bobby Sherman, 1943 He was the cutest of the cute, the hottest teen heartthrob of his era. Remember when you were passionately in love with him, girls? When the mere sight of him elicited screams and swooning? There were tons of dreamy pictures and posters on your bedroom walls, right? Better grab your meds, ladies – Sherman is 71 years old today. The truth was he was always a little old for the part. Though graced with youthful good looks, Sherman was 21 when he first appeared regularly, on “Shindig,” and he was 25 before he landed his most famous part, in “Here Come The Brides.” But Sherman had plenty of talent. After taking up trumpet in the school band at age 11 the youngster became engrossed with music, learning to play an astounding 16 instruments proficiently. Graced with a pleasing voice, Sherman parlayed his good looks with his musical ability and, with good management behind him, released numerous hit records while pursuing the dual path of actor and recording artist. Sherman had a 15-year run – he was 33 by the time his popularity started to wane. During that period he released 10 albums, five of which were certified gold. He has seven hit singles and one, “Little Woman,” released in 1969, went platinum and was one of the best selling singles of the year. Sherman is alive and well and living in Los Angeles. He has two sons, six grandchildren and – sorry ladies — he’s married.

Deadline for submissions is Thursday at noon. Email to jessica@indyeastend. com. Sake Sommelier Sen in Sag Harbor is very proud of Jesse Matsuoka, who just received his Sake Sommelier certification from the Sake School of America. The Sake School of America is endorsed by the Sake Service Institute International -- the largest organization of sake sommelier certification in Japan. They believe that Matsuoka is the only Sake Sommelier on Long Island. It was a difficult and long road to Sommelier status, and they couldn’t be more proud of his accomplishments, for himself as well as for Sen. Take a moment to congratulate him the next time you’re in for dinner. Sen serves over 20 sake regularly. They also use sake in Martini and Mojito cocktails. Matsuoka insures that Sen serves the best seasonal sake and, when he finds new, worthy products, he introduces them to guests. He’s been a champion of sake for many years, including developing whole special dinners around the flavors of sake. Lobster Bake G u r n e y ’s M o n t a u k R e s o r t &
