Anthony’s Ride For Shelter Pets

By Jessica Mackin Anthony and Donny will be among the guests honored at the Pet Hero Awards on Saturday. Rock & Rawhide, the charity that helps increase adoption levels of dogs and cats in shelters, launched a national campaign to help drive adoptions and support of local animal shelters across the country, “Anthony’s Ride for Shelter Pets.” Harkening back to the days of Route 66 and how Americans used to drive awareness of issues from town to town, “Anthony’s Ride for Shelter Pets” took Rock & Rawhide volunteer, and Marine Corps Veteran, Anthony L. Ungaro, from New York to Los Angeles on his 2007 Harley-Davidson FXDB Dyna Bob. Ungaro, a 29-year-old Brooklyn native, combined his love for motorcycle riding with his desire to help animals. He served for eight years in the U.S. Marine Corps, including a deployment to Iraq during the 2004 Battle of Fallujah, before returning home and finding Licensed

love with his red-nosed pit bull Donny. According to Ungaro, “I attribute my successful transition from the military to college, to the positive experiences and responsibilities that come with having a pet in the family.” His motorcycle trip spanned over 4,000 miles, covering 14 states. From New York City to Los Angeles the ride took place from July 30 to August 14. The third annual Pet Hero Awards will take place at Jewel and Robert Morris’ Hobby Hill Estate in Water Mill to benefit the Pet Philanthropy Circle. The event takes place from 5 to 7:30 PM. Horoscope by Kate Plumb

Week of Wednesday August 20-26 Read your rising sign if you know it; or any other sign, as each of us has Aries, Taurus etc. someplace in our charts governing some aspect of our lives. ARIES (March 21-April 20) – We are in the last quarter of the Sun and Moon cycle this week when affairs take a more relaxed mood, waiting for the New Moon on Monday, which begins a new cycle. Both the Moon and Sun change signs on Friday in preparation for the new beginning next week, which also has a stimulating and unpredictable Mars/Uranus aspect, so be careful of taking any reckless or restless action. Wait. TAURUS (April 20-May 21) – As the week begins and your ruler connects with Pluto, you may feel you are making more adjustments in relationships or financial matters than you should be making. Your mood will change Friday into the weekend as the Sun and Moon are changing signs in preparation for the New Moon on Monday. Something/somebody exciting is stirring you up Sunday and Monday. Be open to the new and perhaps unconventional. GEMINI (May 21-June 21) – Mercury, your ruler is strong in Virgo and very busy again this week. Firstly connecting with Pluto, then Venus, then Uranus, then Mars, then Saturn as the New Moon unfolds on Monday. Your thoughts and mental adjustments will go from intense psychological analyzing to knowing the right thing to say on Friday, to a nervousness and irritability yet with physical and mental dexterity on Sunday (when playing a sport is favored), to having a good amount of mental focus for paperwork as the work week and the New Moon begin on Monday. CANCER (June 21-July 20) – The Moon is in your sign as the week begins; you will feel emotionally strong. Share those feelings but be careful of feeling the need to be defensive about having them. Thursday morning you will have the surety to act on those feelings

even though later in the morning your mood shifts to one of restlessness. Patience returns by the afternoon. The Moon stays in Cancer until 4:50 PM on Friday and so ends your monthly 2.5 days of permission to be yourself with all its accompanying blood, sweat, and tears. LEO (July 20- Aug. 20) – You are in the last days of the Sun’s passage through your sign. When you wake up Saturday morning you will feel the Sun’s apparent shift into Virgo where for the next month the income, values, possessions, and resources area of your life will be the focus. This week is the Balsamic Moon phase of the month when the excitement and potential so evident at the New Moon has passed, the harvest time, too, has come and gone and now we are into the ending part of the cycle. Always best not to initiate things during this part of the cycle but wait until after the New Moon on Monday. VIRGO (Aug. 20-Sept. 21) – The Sun apparently (from Earth’s perspective) begins to pass in front of the zodiacal sign Virgo 12:46 AM Saturday morning. The Moon enters Virgo 5:33 AM on Monday. When the two conjoin we have a New Moon, the beginning of a new solar/lunar cycle. All Virgos will slowly begin to feel empowered, as you reassess and analyze the past month this week, before implementation next week. Your analytical skills are strong and you have invisible help. LIBRA (Sept. 21-Oct. 20) – The North Node is in your sign and has been since the end of February. There is an important relationship that has come, or has yet to come, into your life between last winter and when the North Node leaves Libra a year from now. The North Node is actually an astronomical point where the orbits of the Sun (apparent), Earth and the Moon meet, uniquely in Libra every 18 years. You can use this analogy to understand how important this connection you have made or will make is. The unique timing for Libras now has brought you a person who

will lead you forward into the future and from whom you will gain and be nourished by. Recognize him/her or watch for her/him. SCORPIO (Oct. 20-Nov. 21) – As we have said before, Scorpios have it hard these days. There have been the doldrums, then back stepping for months, accompanied by death, emotional crisis, financial difficulties, power struggles, sexual passion, control issues, breakups, psychological breakdowns and breakthroughs. The solution is through learning how to let go and let god. Monday with the New Moon comes a conjunction of Mars and Saturn; another “mini death” which is followed by a new beginning that will take all the persistence and effort you have inside. You will be working hard. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 21-Dec. 21) – You should be really engaged in your new adventure . . . or maybe the engagement this week is in the anticipation of this new expansion. Your sign needs to find meaning in life or at least to have a philosophy to live by, in order to feel warm, generous and confident, which you should be feeling Saturday morning. Wait to take any action until after the New Moon on Monday. You are at the apex of the year now, where you seemingly are on top of the mountain, in command of your life, and very visible. CAPRICORN (Dec. 21-Jan. 21) – This week is the end of the monthly cycle, when energy is waning, getting ready for the New Moon on Monday. Accompanying this New Moon is a conjunction of Mars with Saturn in Scorpio. In Medieval days that combination portended a death. In today’s more psychological approach it can come to mean an interruption of work for some reason, or as it is the conjunction of two planets, a new beginning in work

IN THE NEWS

with a group of people or on a long held dream which looks to finally manifest. Wait until after the New Moon before commiting, as you need Mars to have passed Saturn before the energy flips to be productive and expansive instead of meeting a roadblock. Timing is everything. AQUARIUS (Jan. 21-Feb. 20) – It is about your partner this week and acknowledging the joy he/she brings. This can be shown by the joy that comes when you spend time together doing the simple things, movies and an ice cream cone, for instance. These simple pleasures with your spouse can balance the frustrations you may be feeling at work this week. It is about integrating the perceptions that the month has been about as it winds down and we move into the New Moon on Monday. If you feel tired, no worries; energy is waning. PISCES (Feb. 20-March 21) – As the Sun enters Virgo on Friday and your 7th house of partners you will notice that the day-to-day grind and health issues you have been focusing on this past month will fade. You are about to get noticed for your hard work and are ready to be “seen in public.” Watch a tendency to feel sorry for yourself. You are very sensitive these days and can take everything personally when nothing should be taken personally. The

Reel Deal

By Miles X. Logan

today’s birthday by Miles X. Logan

Isaac Hayes, 1942

Frank is new to theaters.

Coming Soon Sin City: A Dame To Kill (R )Frank Miller and Robert Rodriguez bring back the “Sin City” graphic novel to the screen and the visuals alone are worth the price of admission. A sinfully luscious cast hams it up throughout and loves every minute of it. John Brolin, Jessica Alba, Rosario Dawson, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Eva Green and Mickey Rourke as the ugly guy. New To Theaters Frank * (R ) Michael Fassbender as you’ve never seen him – literally. Lenny Abrahamson’s offbeat film about a young musician who joins an avant garde band is funny, offbeat, and more than a bit terrifying. Domhnall Gleeson (Harry Potter) is excellent as the musician but Fassbender steals the show as the bandleader. Maggie Gyllenhaal, who plays a band member, might well garner Oscar consideration. Now Playing The Maid’s Room (NR) The good news is that the film is supposedly set in the Hamptons. The bad news is it’s pretty lame. Paula Garcés play Drina, a maid at the swanky Crawford residence who witnesses the college-age son of the family commit a heinous crime. The film quickly breaks down: the family members are portrayed as one dimensional spoiled rich people and

(631) 648-7474

Independent / Magnolia Pictures

the maid comes off as a Latino martyr forced to work in the servitude of the man. Every character becomes a caricature, and the film unwittingly turns from horror to comedy – it’s laughable. Calvar y (R) Father James is dismayed by his odd parishioners, all of whom have some sort of weirdness he is forced to deal with. Writer/director John Michael McDonagh (Ned Kelly) has fashioned a multi-layered film that at times is funny and profound but in the end dark, in the tradition of Irish black comedies. Brendan Gleeson, who played “Mad Eye” Mooney in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows is magnificent as Father James and his performance is the glue that keeps this film together. What If? (PG-13) Daniel Radcliffe stars as yet another complex, intelligent character in yet another thoughtful, intelligent movie. This time, he plays a young man unlucky in love who strikes up a friendship with an equally nerdy woman (Zoe Kazan). You can guess the rest. An ensemble cast that includes Adam Driver and Oona Chaplin keeps things moving. We’d love to see Radcliffe just let his proverbial hair down and take on a challenging role that is completely fantastical, otherworldly, and unbelievable. Alas, that day may never come.

Fax (631) 648-7480

Can You Dig It? He began singing at a local church when he was five, and taught himself to play the organ, piano, flute and saxophone. Isaac Hayes didn’t become a household name until 1971, but by then he was a well-known and respected talent to music aficionados. In the early 1960s Hayes was one of the creative voice behind the scenes at Stax records, where he served as a songwriter and a producer. It was Hayes who penned “Soul Man” (along with David Porter), a monster hit for Sam and Dave and again decades later for The Blues Brothers. In fact, the song was named one of the most influential rock songs of the century by the Grammy Hall of Fame. Hayes, who also wrote “Hold On I’m Coming”, had a hit solo album, Hot Buttered Soul, in 1969, and two years later he was approached about writing a theme song for a planned movie about a cool, black detective. The movie Shaft and Hayes’ song “Theme For Shaft” went to the top of the charts, and Hayes won two Grammy Awards and the Oscar – only the third man of color ever to win the coveted statue. Hayes continued to branch out, not only recording and touring but in the acting field. He landed he regular role on “The Rockford Files” which ran from 1974 to 1980. Hayes was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2002 and was the voice of Chef on “South Park” for eight years. Hayes had a very public falling out with the show’s creators, Trey Parker and Matt Stone, over an episode that poked fun at scientologists. In subsequent years Hayes oftentimes seemed confused during interviews, even nonsensical. Rumors swirled that he has suffered a stroke, and during an aborted tour one critic claimed though Hayes was sitting at a piano, he wasn’t really playing it.

This will be followed by a walk in the intertidal zone at the Point, to observe the zonation of seaweeds and their associated fauna, and to identify the most characteristic genera. After that, you’ll visit a drift site farther to the north, where subtidal seaweeds pile up, and then assess not only the quantity (especially large after a storm) but also the diversity of the major groups of organisms there. This seaweed exploration is enjoyable for children as well as adults. There is an $8 fee, per car, for parking at the Point. Noon.
