Hampton Designer Showhouse 2015

The Showcase is in its fourteenth year, and just keeps getting better. In this year’s effort, each room succeeds in putting your stimuli on overdrive. In addition to outstanding furniture, each one is brimming with knickknacks; bedazzled place mats, a tray full of candles, a half finished lollipop statue. Walls and ceilings are a fusion of different patterns, textures and colors. Dried starfish even adorn one bathroom ceiling. They do not convey just an austere showcase, but a warm, livable atmosphere -- one where you

By Ashley O’Connell Traveling on the curvy path through the woods on Old Sag Harbor Road, it appears you’re on the way to that mythical grandma’s house in the children’s song (“over the river and through the woods…”). You’ll even find what looks like a perfect wooden dollhouse. Not a dollhouse, but the Hampton Designer Showhouse, which presents works from the top interior designers across the country. Saturday, July 25 marked their opening gala, with proceeds benefiting Southampton Hospital.

can imagine kicking off your shoes and watching a movie, not just sitting gingerly like a debutante in training. No matter how particular your tastes, there is at least one room that will suit your fancy. Yet, despite vast differences (one room had magenta walls, another had purple velvet chairs), the rooms flow into one another quite seamlessly. There’s a home theatre dubbed “Mancave,” a game room to fulfill any ex frat boy’s dream, and plenty of mini bars around every corner. Designers this year included Black & Poole, Hagins & Mortimer Design, Melanie Roy Design and Denise McGaha, to name a few. As if the rooms weren’t breathtaking enough, the designers themselves were

often posted up in each room, with a welcoming smile, eager to discuss their creations and provide details. One could say the gala was a success, as elegantly dressed people entered the doorways of each room. Guests spilled out of the back porch and onto the grass for refreshments. It was tempting to pretend to retire for the evening in one of the delicious, pillow plumped beds, but the designers probably were not expecting a sleeping beauty reenactment, so back to the shuttle it was for me! Admission to the Showhouse is $35 and includes the Showhouse Journal. Visit www.hamptondesignershowhouse. com.

It will be on view at 30A Jobs Lane, Southampton, from Thursday through August 24 2015, with an opening reception on Thursday from 6 to 8 PM. This exhibition seeks to demonstrate the range of Yektai’s recent work as he blurs the lines between painting and sculpture. Gestural and expressive, his explorations in oil, concrete, wood, resin and other materials, go beyond traditional modes of painting while simultaneously paying homage to his art-historical predecessors. Claudia Baez Claudia Baez “The Guermantes Way: Flowers” is on display at the Art Gallery at the Quogue Library August Exhibit through August. Frost Bite “Frost Bite” a show by Peter Anton is open at Gallery Valentine in East Hampton. The world-renowned sculptor converts the gallery into a giant freezer. The show will run through August 13.

Photographer Susan Wood captures a decade of time through a retrospective exhibition of photographs, from the vibe on the street to icons in the arts, music, fashion, literature, and politics, the impact of which molded a generation. Wood’s candid style tells the story of the times — the changing times — in a visual narrative that distills the mood of an era in American history. Presented by the East Hampton Historical Society and curated by Irish photographer Deirdre Brennan, "Right On! The Lennon Years, Photographs by Susan Wood 1968 – 1978" will be on display to the public for the first time at the Mulford Farm Museum. “I came of age in Ireland looking at images of New York in the 1970s: the mood, the clothes, the films, and TV series. In curating Susan’s work, I wanted to show the breadth of the subject matter Susan has covered, and of course to include the years that she photographed John and Yoko — the Lennon years,” said Brennan. “Susan’s images during this period are synonymous with the 1970s.” Susan Wood’s editorial, advertising, and fashion photography has appeared in titles such as Look, Vogue, People, The New York Times and New York Magazine. She is known for her portraits of John Lennon and Yoko Ono, Susan Sontag, and Diane von Furstenberg; her candid images of art and political personalities, such as Jane Fonda, Daniel Ellsberg, Teddy Kennedy, and Tom Wolfe, and fashion phenoms such as Ralph Lauren and Gloria Vanderbilt as well as models before there were super-models, such as Cheryl Tiegs, Christie Brinkley, and the original Bond Girl, Maud Adams. An opening reception for "Right On! The Lennon Years, Photographs by Susan Wood 1968 – 1978" will be held at the historical barn at the Mulford Farm Museum on Saturday, August 8, from 4 to 7 PM. The exhibition is on display through October 18. Ryan McGinness: Sign Trees Silas Marder Gallery presents “Ryan McGinness: Sign Trees,” a solo exhibition of recent paintings and sculptures, opening Saturday and on view through August 29. In this most recent body of work, McGinness appropriates the common street sign, using off-the-shelf industrial parts to create objects that imitate the style of the urban transportation system. The Sign Trees resemble overpopulated traffic signposts, each trunk splitting off into a constellation of branches supporting panels arrayed with the artist’s signature symbols. Penn & Teller on Broadway Inspired by the business of p r o f e s s i o n a l m e n ’s b a s k e t b a l l , Fernanda Coppel is on fiyah, as the rappers say. Fueled by intense energy, passion, and a dramatic sense of physicality, Coppel scores with her new play King Liz, at 2econd Stage Theatre Uptown. In the lead, Karen Pittman is a sports agent who, having climbed the ladder from the projects to Yale University, is on a sure path to taking over the Candy Agency. Intense, urgent, and single-minded, her King Liz is seemingly invincible. Even her male rivals insist, she “eats the testacies off a newborn.” At her boss’s urging, Liz takes on a talented teenage African American basketball player who was reared in the projects, and whose court record is apparently his major stigma. Michael Cullen portrays her boss, Mr. Candy, as a deceptively two-faced man who maintains control in the most surreptitious ways. More important, Jeremie Harris portrays the volatile basketball player as a defenseless youth - as sensitive as he is aggressive. In fact, the entire cast, including Russell G. Jones as the coach and

Turn Off Your Cellphone On a more comedic note, Douglas Carter Beane’s Shows for Days at Lincoln Center’s Mitzi E. Newhouse, is a prickly valentine to the theater. Harkening back to more innocent times, the 1970s (before cellphones), Beane captures the idea of a theater as a shared communal experience. Appropriately framed as a play within a play, the comedy is narrated by a 14-year-old boy. In this role, Michael Urie matures somewhat, discovers his homosexuality, and asserts his independence. As his bête noire, Patti LuPone, the leader of the troupe, drives the calamities to a sense of finality – at least for these small townspeople. The cast of six delivers the tale with a divine love of the stage, which manifests itself in their dirty little sexual conquests and other narcissistic exploits. Unlike Noises Off or other goofy farces that make fun of the theater, Shows for Days is a delightfully sentimental journey, with an edge of sarcasm. Directed by New York stage veteran Jerry Zaks, the play is a refreshing reflection that makes for a charming evening in the theater both the one we’re in and the one we observe. Pick A Card, Any Card Quirky illusionists, devilish magicians, and cunning comedians, Penn & Teller on Broadway, at the Marquis Theatre, are as enjoyable now as when they arrived on the New York theater scene a few decades ago. Deconstructing tried and true magic acts - like sawing a woman in half - the duo expose the antics behind many a well-known magical trick. And while they are mesmerizing to watch, you may wind up with no more certainty about how these tricks are done than you did when you arrived. Delving into the romance of illusion, the fun of being on stage, and the human comedy that keeps us so engaged in the moment, they continue to come at us with the most joyous and unexpected feats. Indeed, Penn & Teller capture that ineffable magic we call theater.

Profit by studying math. Learn to be natural by watching the ways of animals. Working with your hands benefits you. TAURUS (Apr. 20 - May 21) You need to be more aware of how successful and respected you are. You will never gain more than you have now until you empower yourself by appreciating what you have done. Success is really how you define it. GEMINI (May 21 - June 22) Remember that even if your intellect is aroused and stimulated by a flurry of new projects and ideas, do not let it lead you into a state where daydreaming and imagining become more important than making your ideas real. CANCER (June 22 - July 23) You need to experience childlike joy. The child you were still lives within you and must be cared for. Allow yourself positive, nostalgic memories of childhood, friends, and family. If you can, spend time with younger people. LEO (July 23 - Aug. 23) You need to revolutionize an important aspect of your situation. You may feel willing to upset everything and everyone as a result of your anxiety. New information will produce surprises. Beware of gossip. Protect your privacy. CAPRICORN (Dec. 21 - Jan. 20) You need to inspire others. Be a charismatic, self-assured person who knows how things must be done. Parties and other gatherings will benefit you. But you may be prone to bouts of anger and intensity this week. Neil Armstrong, 1930 The young, studious boy growing up in Wapakoneta, Ohio, surely never imagined he would become a television star but on July 21, 1969 over 450 million people -- 12 percent of the world’s population -- saw him TV. He aspired, not to be a TV star, but to be a pilot, a dream he pursued from the time he was six, when he first boarded a plane. He joined the U.S. Navy when he was 18 and was a certified Naval Aviator by age 20. He flew 78 missions during the Korean War and attended Purdue University afterwards. Neil Alden Armstrong, at that point, could have become a commercial airplane pilot and guaranteed himself and his new wife a comfortable life with substantial earnings. But he didn’t merely want to fly – he wanted the thrill of the unknown, to test boundaries never tested before. He decided to become an experimental jet pilot and was assigned to the High Speed test program at Edwards Air Force Base. In the coming years Armstrong flew over 900 flights, shattering records of speed and highest altitude. It was no surprise he was selected for America’s Man In Space Soonest program in 1958. In 1967, 17 pilots were chosen to advance to the lunar program – a handful of them, and perhaps more, were literally going to the moon. Armstrong served as backup commander on Apollo 8 and was named commander of Apollo 11, the moon mission. Armstrong, along with Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins, set down on the moon with Armstrong uttering his iconic message “Houston, the eagle has landed.” As he stepped onto the surface of the moon with his left boot Armstrong suddenly blurted out, “That’s one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind.” The statement, now iconic, wasn’t planned and Armstrong hadn’t given any consideration to what he might say beforehand. He later said he didn’t think the landing had much of a chance of succeeding, so he didn’t think about what he might say. Armstrong never went to space again. He eschewed publicity and lived a relatively quiet life, though he served as a spokesman for Chrysler for eight years. He was particularly annoyed at those who tried to make money from his image, his words, or his celebrity – like the barber that sold bags of his cut hair. He died of complications from heart surgery in 2012.

but Kevin Hart and Will Ferrell are pretty damn funny in the privacy of an adult bedroom, where the kids can’t hear the filthy dialogue. Ferrell plays a hedge fund manager sentenced to jail and he hires an ex-con (Hart, of course) to prepare him for prison life. There is something very liberating about seeing and hearing blacks, gays, and every other food group ridiculed and stereotyped. It is one of the most vulgar movies ever made. We are embarrassed we laughed so often, and our politically correct selves must purify our bodies, perhaps with a good colon cleansing. Now Playing Mission: Impossible Rogue Nation (PG-13) Yes, another one, and they will just keep making them until the public stops buying tickets. Based on the buzz for this one, number five, that won’t be anytime soon. Tom Cruise, still looking like he can do his own stunts, Ving Rhames, and Jeremy Renner are back. Osteria Salina After three years of creating a loyal following and serving Authentic Sicilian cuisine highlighting the specialties of the Aeolian islands, namely Salina, Osteria Salina has moved from its location in Bridgehampton to Wainscott. The new Osteria Salina space underwent a massive renovation under the direction of restauranteur Tim Gaglio and his family to restore the grandeur of the space, previously the iconic Sapore di Mare. The walls were re-painted in grey stone grey and the ceilings a reflective periwinkle blue to give the space’s interior a warm, iridescent glow. They also brought in hand-made wrought iron wall sconces and chandeliers to make sure the inside reflects the restaurant’s exterior, which is styled after a European manor house. The newly painted walls pair seamlessly with its idyllic views of Georgica Pond, allowing diners watch the pond’s wildlife while enjoying Osteria’s signature Sicilian dishes prepared by Chef and restauranteur Cinzia Gaglio. Chilled thick cut Kirby cucumbers seasoned with Sicilian olive oil, flake sea salt, and freshly cracked black pepper along with the coveted agrodolce Caponatina, ser ved atop hand cut crostini made from the Sullivan Street Filone bread are delivered to the table as you arrive. From there, guests can enjoy signature dishes including Fritto Misto

served with shrimp, squid, zucchini, crispy capers and lemons in an Arrabiata sauce, the Polpette, which are Cinzia’s signature meatballs, served with pecorino Siciliano in her pomodoro sauce, or the Pesce Spada alla Piastra, a swordfish served with a caponatina of eggplant, tomato, golden raisins, capers, agrodolce. They will be expanding the menu with items like Busiate alla Trapanese, Spaghettini Nero di Seppia with sea urchin (Riccio di Mare), and Gamberi Con Couscous. Guests come far and wide to enjoy Osteria Salina’s signature Panino de Gelato, which are two of Cinzia’s handmade biscotti rounds filled with gelato. They also offer an aperitivo hour from 4:30 to 6 PM which will include a lighter menu along with many aperitifs. Osteria Salina boasts an A-List clientele from actors to politicians including Mar y Kate Olsen, Governor Andrew Cuomo, Liv Tyler, Christie Brinkley, Bradley Cooper, Kelly Ripa and Keith Hernandez. With the new expanded space host Tim Gaglio can now hold private parties in its intimate private dining room, La Saletta. In the main dining room, the space now boasts a baby grand piano lounge, which will feature performances from top cabaret acts throughout the New York area.
