enhances that confidence. Women are often hard on themselves and our hope is that JUJA can encourage positive self image through inspiring products and a supportive community. I think our tagline says it best: Activewear to inspire a movement! What are some of your favorite items for sale at JUJA? It’s hard to pick favorites. I love everything that we sell. But my current obsession are the graffiti leggings from Nolí Yoga and the Patchwork Sports Bra from the new Track & Bliss fall collection.
JUJA Active
By Jessica Mackin Founder Jen Russo (pictured above, second from left) opened JUJA Active in Southampton Village this year. Here Russo gives us the details about the activewear boutique, their charity yoga classes and her background.
Give us a background on JUJA Active and how it was started: I founded JUJA in 2015 as a place for discovery and community. In my former career as an investment banker, I traveled often for work, grounding my trips with visits to local yoga studios. In these studios I found fabulous clothes
from small independent brands, many created by enterprising women. I saw a need in the marketplace to bring a curated selection of these wonderful products to women everywhere. The result is JUJA Active, a place of grace, sisterhood and infectious optimism! JUJA Active’s mission both as a brand and as part of society is to empower women and girls. Empowerment begins with self confidence. Being comfortable in our bodies increases self confidence and wearing clothes that enable us to express who we are displays and
How do you find the brands that you carry? I found a number of our brands through my travels to yoga studios around the countr y. I have been introduced to others through yoga teachers, fellow practitioners and other fitness instructors. I feel very fortunate that brands are now finding us. We are always on a quest for new, fun and interesting products to share with our JUJA community.
Favorite thing about summer in The Hamptons: Fresh local vegetables! My personal favorites: tomatoes from Pike Farm in Sagaponack and salad bowl lettuce from Halsey Farm in Water Mill.
What are some of your favorite workouts? I grew up dancing so the workouts I love are those that move me spiritually as well as physically. As someone who also craves hot weather, I love hot yoga. My favorite class: a heated vinyasa practice with lots of arm balances and interesting sequences.
Tell us about the Summer Yoga Series and some of the charities you support: JUJA began its journey to fulfill our social mission shortly after launching. This summer we created an amazing yoga series led by renowned teachers where each class benefited a non-profit working to empower women and girls. The classes were held in the yoga tent at the Channing Daughters Winery in Bridgehampton. We are so grateful to One Ocean Yoga and the Channing family for their generous donation of the yoga space that made this all possible. We raised money for The Retreat, a not-for-profit agency against domestic violence and other forms of gender violence, the Urban Zen Foundation Integrative Therapy’s breast cancer program and the Lower East Side Girls Club. Each organization works to nurture and empower women and girls and we are proud to have been able to help even as a young company. As we grow, we will build upon this movement to develop programs that help women gain additional confidence and comfort in their bodies, particularly when coming back from situations of adversity.
How was you first summer in Southampton? Plans now that summer is winding down? Our first summer was amazing. We had such an enthusiastic response from the community here and we already have self-described JUJA addicts! We look forward to continuing to bring our customers new, fabulous products in our Southampton store, our online store www.jujaactive.com and new stores in other locations. We will stay open yearround here and we are looking forward to a beautiful Hamptons autumn. We are excited to be participating in the inaugural Hamptons Yogafest in midSeptember and are planning some great in-store events in the coming months. We are working on many exciting new initiatives for the fall. We will be launching our full ecommerce site and opening a new JUJA Active pop-up shop, all in the coming weeks. Stay tuned for more.
Where did the name JUJA come from? I named JUJA after my two amazing stepdaughters, Julia and Jamie. I have had the privilege of being part of their lives for 15 years and they continue to inspire me.

Chris Arlotta And Mario Pecoraro, Foodies At Heart By Jessica Mackin Chris Arlotta and Mario Pecoraro live in Water Mill. They are the owners of Arlotta Food Studio which specializes in organic olive oils, and Arlotta by Chris Arlotta, a cashmere collection. Below Chris Arlotta tells us about their companies, their support of the Samuel Waxman Cancer Research Foundation, and some of their favorites things to do in the Hamptons. Where in The Hamptons is home? And what are some of your favorite places to go in The Hamptons? We live in Water Mill, and love the serene horse country and farm ambiance where we live, combined with being a short distance from the beaches. We really enjoy Flying Point and Mecox beach, with bay and ocean, and taking our dog Giacomo with us to watch the sunsets! We so love our property and are blessed to enjoy our special "Shangri-La." Living full time in The Hamptons, we enjoy so many of the great restaurants, such as The East Hampton Grill, Osteria Salina, Bridgehampton Inn, Nick & Toni's, Bell & Anchor and Bobby Vans. Sant Ambroeus has the best espresso and cookies! We also love to try new restaurants each season such as Circo. Tell us about Arlotta Food Studio: Arlotta Food Studio is a Hamptons based company, launched here. It was our goal to bring our certified organic olive oils and balsamic vinegars direct to consumers through presenting our products at over 23 farmers markets across Long Island per week, wonderful gourmet shops, and local farm stands, and of course on our website www. arlottafood.com. With Mario at the helm, our family business includes my brother John, who is a marketing guru, and our partners on our farm in northern California, where each and every bottle of oil is first cold pressed, with early harvest and natural flavored infusions we created. I suppose I can easily say we are the "preferred olive oil of The Hamptons!" We also have been chosen by SYSCO, one of the largest distributors to restaurants and chefs, to be one of the featured products they distribute. We also prepare unique artisanal tapenades and pastas. I guess
it is easy to see we are foodies at heart. We love the nature and elegance of our surroundings. That is a reflection in all of our products. Where are some locations that our readers can find your organic olive oils and balsamic vinegars? Farmers markets in The Hamptons are located in Montauk, East Hampton, Sag Harbor, Springs, Bridgehampton, Southampton and across the island. Our stores are Loaves & Fishes in Bridgehampton, Red Horse Market in East Hampton, Hampton Seafood, Sparkling Pointe in Southold, Milk Pail, Buhimi Farm Stand, Green Thumb Market in Water Mill, Eli's Manhattan and of course through our website www.arlottafood. com, of which we have free shipping until December! Tell us about Arlotta by Chris Arlotta cashmere collection: Arlotta Cashmere by Chris Arlotta is a designer brand in major departments stores and specialty stores nationwide for 20 years. Specializing in cashmere robes, lounge wear, slippers and top of bed blankets, throws, and decorative pillows including travel cashmere. Arlotta cashmere stands alone with a niche we own in the stores for our luxurious lounging collections of cashmere. Where is Arlotta by Chris Arlotta sold? We can be found in our pop up stores in all Bloomingdales locations, Saks Fifth Ave, Bergdorf Goodman, Barneys, Soma, and other fine high-end lingerie and home stores nationwide. As a Fashion Institute of Technology graduate, I opened our first ateliers in Italy and France before bringing the brand full circle with our luxurious cashmere yarns from Inner Mongolia. Although we have many wonderful ecommerce customers, this year we will launch direct to consumer through our own website. Tell us about your involvement w i t h t h e S a m u e l Wa x m a n Cancer Research Foundation: We met Marion and Dr. Samuel Wa x m a n f o u r y e a r s a g o a n d immediately felt the passion they have

for finding a cure for cancer. That was the catalyst for both of us to want to be involved with the foundation. It was natural for us to join their committees for the SWCRF. I sit on the marketing committee and we both are Hamptons Happening committee members, which is one of the best events in The Hamptons for fundraising for cancer research. Through our friends and business associates in the Hamptons, we try to circle back to the work for finding a cure while enjoying the event that is most dear to our hearts. As it is a chef driven and super cool foodie event we participate as a vendor and fundraiser. Favorite summer dish: Our favorite summer dish in The Hamptons is all the local seafood, which we make as frutta de mare. Also the many gorgeous local vegetables simply grilled then with a drizzle of our
blood orange olive oil, and fig balsamic vinegar, as well as Hamptons tomatoes with fresh basil, our basil infused olive oil, traditional balsamic, red onion, garlic, salt, pepper and a great crusty loaf of bread! Indeed a wonderful rosé wine sets the mood! Favorite thing about summer in The Hamptons: What we like most about the summer in the Hamptons, is in fact the events that bring such a grand aura of fun while working for a good cause. We also love having small gatherings for dinner parties, and running to the beach for sunsets. After all, summer is a magical time in The Hamptons, everyone is relaxed, happy, willing to give, and to try to share and enjoy the life we have here. I do admit I love wearing white all summer too, in The very Hamptons style.

OPENING To Each Her Own
Barbara Bilotta and Anna Franklin present "To Each Her Own," opening at Ashawagh Hall in Springs tonight with a reception from 4 to 7 PM. The show runs through Friday. Bilotta and Franklin are both members of The White Room Gallery in Bridgehampton and share many other art affiliations together as well as a friendship and a respect for each other's artistic vision. Being fundamentally different in art, Bilotta is an abstract expressionist and Franklin, although eclectic, basically a landscaper, they decided to come together in this two-woman show. This exhibition will showcase an in-depth display of their artistic talent. They are both talented artists selected in many juried and invitation-only shows with extensive experience in exhibiting all over the East End, New York city and state, and out of state. They are looking forward to seeing friends and patrons on their reception night which will provide generous food and wine as well as the music of a roving violinist.

Mica Marder
A reception for Mica Marder will be held Saturday, from 4 to 8 PM with music by the Peter Watrous Trio from 5:30 to 7:30 PM at Silas Marder Gallery in Bridgehampton, The show runs through October 17. Mica Marder is known for the remarkable ability to render the essentials of his subjects with an honest, intuitive hand. His drawings, paintings and sculpture are a truly visceral experience, offering an alternative to the cool remoteness of much of today’s contemporary art.
Fulvio Massi
The Art Gallery at the Quogue Library September 2015 Exhibit is Fulvio Massi “On The Wall.” Massi thinks of his painting as “a stratification of events, a representation of time, an accumulation of different temporalities characterized by swift accelerations, sudden arrest and abrupt discontinuities evoking the ebb and flow of life.” The show opens on Thursday with a reception from 5 to 6:30 PM and runs through September.

The
Reel Deal
By Miles X. Logan
on earth is thrilled to run into a man (played by Chiwetel Ejiofor), though he is half-crazed from nuclear exposure. It’s a star making vehicle for Margot Robbie (The Wolf Of Wall Street) and she delivers, transcending what could have been a cliché-ridden sci-fi romp into something much more. Chris Pine also stars. This is a surprisingly subtle take on survival that is well worth watching. Put Robbie on the list for possible Best Actress Oscar nominations.
An asterisk (*) denotes an Indy Best Movie pick.
New To Theaters
No Escape (R ) Owen Wilson is a funny guy but he barely cuts it as a serious actor. That’s number one on the list of flaws in this international thriller directed by John Erick Dowdle. It is also violent, and hyperactive to the point that the pacing is a distraction. But the cliché-driven plot about two Americans trapped overseas during a violent political uprising is tried and true, and the suspense palpable.
A Walk In The Woods (R ) A newly retired senior citizen (Robert Redford) leaves his comfortable life and comely wife (Emma Thompson) to hike the Appalachian Trail. When an old friend (Nick Nolte) pops up along the way, the quiet solitude is shattered. The success of this film depends on two things: believing this is a buddy movie, and laughing at the so-called humorous banter. Let’s put it this way – the to old pros do their best.
Coming Soon
A Perfect Chord (unrated) A little film about a young musician who struggles with stage fright. Nathan Blair’s debut film shows a light touch, and newcomer Malia Flack does her best to sing and act at the same time. Unfortunately, her stage fright is telling her something – don’t sing in public.
New On DVD
Grandma (R ) The great Lily Tomlin once again proves her acting chops playing a grandmother, fresh off a breakup, who must help her granddaughter raise $600 before sundown. What appears to be a breezy comedy evolves into an emotionpacked, stunning film. Write it down: Tomlin not only gets a Best Actress Oscar nomination, but becomes the odds-on favorite. Paul Wietz (Antz, About A Boy) wrote the screenplay and directs.
Hot Pursuit This is one of the best of the new wave of girl buddy movies. Reese Witherspoon plays a by-the-book cop trying to protect Sofía Vergara, who is about to testify against drug cartel. The plot is suspiciously like The Heat with Sandra Bullock and Melissa McCarthy, and though no one can match McCarthy for sheer hilarity, Vergara is charming and comfortable on the big screen and she plays the part well. Witherspoon has evolved into an amazing actress. She can be goofy, naive, stubborn and sexy all at the same time, and she transforms the film into something more than . . . well, a buddy movie.
The Man From U.N.C.L.E. (PG-13) Why, oh, why must we continually recycle these TV shows? The time around Henry Cavill (Superman) is Napolean Solo and Armie Hammer (The Social Network ) plays Illya Kuryakin. It’s a Guy Ritchie film, so expect action and violence.

William Everett Preston, 1946
It’s hard to fathom how a young black musician from Houston, Texas came to be known as “the fifth Beatle,” but suffice it to say the funky piano player fit right in with the Fab Four. Preston moved to Los Angeles as a young child. He began playing the piano as a precocious three-yearold and quickly mastered the keyboard. By age 10 the child prodigy was playing the organ for the likes of Mahalia Jackson and other well-known Gospel singers. By the time the 1960s rolled around Preston had become the go-to session keyboardist for gospel, funk, and soul recording, particularly for his prowess on the Hammond organ. That’s Preston you here backing up Little Richard, Sam Cooke, and Ray Charles. Soon, he began recording under his own name and had a string of hits including “Nothing From Nothing,” and “Will It Go Round In Circles.” The British Invasion changed the landscape of American music, with songs by the invaders from overseas dominating radio airplay and the album charts. But many of those bands sought out Preston, seeking to integrate his funky sound into their compositions. Among them were Eric Clapton, The Beatles, and Joe Cocker – in fact, Preston co-wrote Cocker’s most endearing hit, “You Are So Beautiful.” When Preston decided to put out his own album he called on many of the British musicians he had worked for -- George Harrison, Keith Richards, and Ginger Baker among them. That’s The Way God Planned It became an international hit. Preston’s post-Beatles’ years featured more successes. He co-wrote “Love The One You’re With” for Stephen Stills, won a Grammy in 1972 for “Outta Space” and appeared in the 1978 film Sergeant Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. He migrated from the Beatles to The Rolling Stones, playing on the classic albums Sticky Fingers, Exile On Main Street, and several others. Preston was the first-ever musical guest on “Saturday Night Live,” in 1975. In 1980 he toured with Ringo Starr. Preston ran into trouble in the 90s – he was convicted of insurance fraud for burning down his own house, he became addicted to cocaine, and he allegedly had sex with a 16 year-old male migrant farm worker he had picked up hitchhiking. Preston recovered. He toured with Clapton, played on Neil Diamond’s comeback album 12 Songs and performed with George Harrison’s son Dhani. Billy Preston, suffering from kidney failure, lapsed into a coma in 2005 and died six months later.

Independent Dining Slow Roasted Chicken With Arugula & Bocconcini
INGREDIENTS (serves 4) 4 lemons 5 cloves of garlic 1 bunch of thyme 1/2 c kosher salt 2 bay leaves 1 tbs black peppercorns 1/2 c honey 1 gallon of water 3 lbs of ice 1 6-7 lb whole chicken 1 pint heirloom cherry tomatoes 1 tbsp chili flakes 1/4 c olive oil 3 tbsp flat leaf parsley (chopped) 10 oz of arugula 1/4 lb bocconcini (each cut in half)
METHOD First brine the whole chicken. This may be done overnight or at least for five hours. To make the brine, first add the gallon of water to a large stock pot, then add the bay leaves, thyme, four cloves of garlic, three lemons cut in half, peppercorns, and kosher salt. Bring this to a boil then reduce to a simmer and let cook for 30 minutes. After it has simmered for 30 minutes, dump in the ice to drop the temperature of the liquid. Submerge the chicken in the brine and wait. When you are ready to cook the bird, bring 1/3 cup of water to a
simmer. Stir in the honey to make a glaze to rub on the bird. Preset an oven to 250 degrees. While the oven heats remove the bird from the brine and dry it with a towel. When the bird is dry, rub it with the honey glaze all over the skin. Place the bird on a sheet tray preferably fitted with a wire rack and cook the bird at 250 for six hours. Be sure to check it periodically and use the drippings to baste the bird once every 30 minutes. While the bird cooks you can assemble the dressing by zesting and juicing the last lemon, mincing the garlic clove, and chopping the parsley. Incorporate those ingredients with the olive oil and chili flakes. Season to your liking with kosher salt and freshly

ground black pepper, then marinate the bocconcini with the dressing. When the bird is finished remove it from the oven and allow it to cool at room temperature for 15 minutes, pull the tender meat from the bird. Assemble the dish by simply mixing the arugula, tomatoes, and bocconcini together with some of the dressing. Add the warm chicken at the end so that it doesn't wilt the arugula and enjoy.

Chef Jason Kallert - Gurney's Montauk your role with this company.
I help create the concepts for all the new restaurants, as well as the menu development. I draw/build all the kitchens. I hire and train all the back of house staff.
Tell us about the chefs that work for you at Gurney’s Montauk?
I have an Executive Chef at Gurney’s, as well as three Executive Sous Chefs. Flavia, the Executive Chef oversees all of the venues and operations, while each Executive Sous oversees his/her venue at The Beach Club, Tillies, and Scarpetta.
What is your vision overall for Gurney’s Montauk? To provide the best hospitality and food in all the Hamptons.
What is your favorite thing to cook? Tell us your forté:
Not necessarily my forté, but my favorite thing to cook is true Texas BBQ. I have a smoker and a grill on the beach club and we do a BBQ every Saturday with smoked whole short ribs (smoked for 24 hours), St. Louis Ribs, and Jerk Chicken.
What’s your favorite color? Black

give amazing hospitality and identity in each of our restaurants and venues.
What is your favorite restaurant? .... And the dish?
Porterhouse, NY. The Rib Steak and Broccoli.
What kind of menus have you created for the different restaurants you have opened? I’ve created bar and grill concepts, steakhouse concepts, and large format/dinner theater concepts.
Do you actually shop around the Hamptons for unique local foods?
I do where possible, in any specials, or our local market greens salad, etc.. the problem is Gurney’s is such a large resort and we provide food for so many guests, any small farm could never handle the volume we need, but we do fit in as many local ingredients as we can.
As a popular chef in the luxury hospitality industry, how do you manage to balance work-time, familytime, play-time. Do you do any wellness or meditation? Basically, because I work so much, and travel so much, I spend every minute with my family when I’m not working. My meditation is biking, I bike on average 25-30 miles per day.
