The

Reel Deal Paddlers For Humanity By Miles X. Logan

An asterisk (*) denotes an Indy Best Movie pick. New To Theaters Creep (R ) Mark Dupass and Patrick Brice somehow pull off this wacky horror/romance/comedy despite a minimal budget and a history of making movies no one goes to. From the folks who brought us Paranormal Activity. It’s an oddity – an original film made by folks who don’t care if it bombs. Dupass is beyond good.

Gere takes on a difficult role as a homeless man in New York City who wanders the streets in search of booze, food, and shelter. It’s a daunting task, and the fact writer/director Oren Moverman has bombed with every socially-conscious film he ever made -- The Messenger, Love And Mercy -doesn’t help. Maybe a Robert Duvall in his prime might have been able to do more with the leaden script. Gere, though a fine actor, just isn’t plausible enough in the role.

Fifty-two brave paddlers set out to take on the 18-miles of open ocean from Montauk to Block Island on August 29. According to Paddlers for Humanity, this year’s Block Challenge broke records in terms of participants and monies raised. The 10th Anniversary of the event brought in more than $190,000 in donations from 52 participants and others. The organization will continue focusing its efforts on improving programs that address youth mental health. Funds raised this season will be donated to the following causes: Bridgehampton School’s Positive Behavior Intervention System; buildOn; Family Service League; Hoops for Hope; i-tri; Long Island Communities of Practice; Project MOST; and The P4h East End Catastrophic Fund. The paddle itself was a positive experience for everyone involved, according to P4H board member and paddler Fred Doss. “We had a really diverse group of newcomers and veterans, men and women. The conditions were good, certainly much better than the last two years. There wasn’t any fog so we could see Block Island from the beginning of the paddle. Not to minimize the effort, there’s no question it’s a challenge, but everyone involved was in great spirits and offered each other great support. Not to mention, our support boat team out on the water was truly unbelievable. We’re so grateful and excited that the event was such a huge success.” from Cameron Crowe came in with an awesome cast featuring Bradley Cooper and Emma Stone and we had every reason to believe audiences would love it – until we saw it. Then, reality set in. Stillborn. An embarrassing bomb of epic proportions. Now Playing A Perfect Chord (PG-13) A little film about a young musician who struggles with stage fright. Nathan Blair’s debut film shows a light touch, and newcomer Malia Flack does her best to sing and act at the same time. Unfortunately, her stage fright is telling her something – don’t sing in public. No Escape (R ) Owen Wilson is a funny guy but he barely cuts it as a serious actor. That’s number one on

the list of flaws in this international thriller directed by John Erick Dowdle. It is also violent, and hyperactive to the point that the pacing is a distraction. But the cliché-driven ploy about two Americans trapped overseas during a violent political uprising is tried and true, and the suspense palpable.

today’s birthday by Miles X. Logan

Hugh Grant, 1960 Hugh John Mungo Grant was planning on leading a relatively boring but satisfying life as an art historian when by chance he found job in commercials. Grant had already led a varied life: his father was a World War II major decorated for heroism and bravery. In fact, the males in his aristocratic family typically performed admirably in the military. Grant was a gifted athlete and scholar and played rugby, football, and cricket in Upper School, earning a scholarship to New College, Oxford. There he joined the drama club and toured in Twelfth Night. Grant formed his own comedy troupe that was good enough to land a spot on the BBC and continued to perform Shakespeare until he began landing film rolls. In 1987 he landed the leading role in Maurice. He won acclaim for the role and continued to find regular work on the big screen. In 1992 he was cast as Charles in Four Weddings And A Funeral; the role made him a star. The film became the highest grossing English movie of all time and grossed $244 million worldwide. Funeral was nominated for two Academy Awards and Grant earned a Golden Globe nomination as Best Actor. Three years later Grant earned raves for his performance in Ang Lee’s Sense and Sensibility. Perhaps Grant’s best-known role was in 1999’s Notting Hill opposite Julia Roberts. Grant earned another Golden Globe nomination, and one critic noted the film, “sets the standard for modern romantic comedies.” Grant’s winning stage presence, nonchalance, and seemingly unscripted repartee are actually studied, as are his physical mannerisms and facial expressions, carefully honed over the years. The entertainment media’s coverage of Grant’s life off the big screen has often overshadowed his work as an actor — his romance with Elizabeth Hurley provided tabloid fodder for 13 years. One thing is for sure: audiences like Grant’s likeable, easygoing screen presence. He’s had hits with About A Boy, in which the film critic Robert Ebert likened Grant “to a modern-day Cary Grant. Hit films with Drew Barrymore (Music And Lyrics) and The Rewrite with Marisa Tomei were also successful. After years of bachelorhood (and a famous dalliance with the hooker Foxy Brown) Grant has settled down, sort of — he’s had four children in the past four years – by two different women.

Independent Dining Roasted Cauliflower Ravioli With Lobster & Corn Reduction Shiitake Mushrooms

Ingredients (serves 4) 1 2 lb Lobster 2 c durum flour 2 eggs (beaten) 2 ears corn 1 head of cauliflower 3 tbsp butter 1/4 c of milk 1/4 c olive oil 1 carrot 1 tbsp tomato paste 1 onion 1 cup chopped shiitake mushrooms 1 bay leaf 1 sprig of thyme 1/4 c all purpose flour 1/2 c white wine 3 celery stalks salt and pepper to your liking 4 sprigs of tarragon Method The first step in the lengthy process of preparing this dish will be to make your pasta. If you have a Kitchen Aide with a dough hook attachment simply place the durum flour in the mixing bowl and form a cone shape with a small depression at the top, like a volcano, where you will place your beaten eggs and then turn the Kitchen Aide on at low speed. Watch the mixture closely. When

a solid ball of pasta dough is formed remove it from the mixing bowl, wrap in plastic and set it aside for a few minutes until you're ready to work with it. If you do not have a Kitchen Aide, the old fashion way will work just fine. Flour a cutting board and form the volcano shape, add the egg at the top and slowly incorporate the ingredients until a ball of pasta dough is formed. Stand the corn cob lengthwise and carefully slice the corn from the cob. Set the corn kernels aside for later and add the cob to a stockpot along with half the onion, carrot, thyme, bay leaf, and celery. Fill with one gallon of water and bring to a boil.

Once the stock reaches a boil place the lobster in for 10 minutes. Remove and immediately submerge the lobster in an ice bath and reduce the stock to a simmer. When the lobster has cooled, cut open the tail and claws to remove the meat and set it aside in the fridge until later and return the lobster shells to the stock along with the tomato paste. While the stock simmers cut up the cauliflower florets, toss them in olive oil and season them. Roast at 400 degrees for 15 minutes, rotating the tray half way through the cooking process. When they're done place them in the food processor or blender with two tbsp of the butter and the milk then blend until a smooth thickened puree is achieved. Set in fridge to cool. Assembling the ravioli: If you have a small hand cranked pasta machine at home this is the time to pry it from the back of the cabinet. If not, a rolling pin and some elbow grease will work fine. Form the ball of pasta dough so that it fits into the machine. Press the pasta through a few times starting at the thickest setting, working it down to the one setting that will produce a nice thin sheet of pasta. Then using a cookie cutter punch eight large circular Surf Shack 2x5.563 9/1/15 pasta sheets. Brush9-2-15:Layout four of them1 with

water and place a spoon full of the cauliflower puree in the middle of each. Then, cover each with another sheet of pasta. Carefully press the edges together removing any air pockets and then seal the ravioli using a fork. Set aside on a floured plate until you're ready to cook them. After about two hours of simmering, the stock is ready to be strained, and the sauce is ready to be finished. Start a roux in a small pan with the all purpose flour and the rest of the butter. Cook it over medium heat for about five minutes, stirring often so it does not burn. Then strain the stock and blend it with the roux on high until a sauce consistency is reached. After hours of painstaking work we are ready to assemble our dish. Bring a small pot of salted water to a boil then drop the ravioli in. In a large sauté pan heat one tbsp of olive oil then add the mushrooms and the corn kernels. Deglaze with white wine and let reduce for one minute. Add the lobster and corn sauce and the chunks of lobster meat. When the ravioli floats in the boiling water they are ready to be finished at two minutes in the sauce on a medium low heat. Plate the four ravioli and garnish with 11:36 AM 1 a sprig of Page tarragon.
