GRAND PRIZE WINNER Yessenia Aguirre and Maggie Ryan Grade 7 Montauk School The Witness One day in the peaceful city of the Little Apple, TERROR was about to strike! Reaching down from above came the hand of a fearsome beast, taking the innocent residents. However, tiny, lucky little Susan was left behind. Then even Susan was plucked from her home and cast aside. She sat, paralyzed with fear, as she witnessed the monster raise a steely claw and skin one of her friends. She saw it peel off in long ribbons. Susan wanted to help, but she couldn’t move. She heard the sound of ripping flesh as one by one each victim faced their doom. Then the beast began to slice those who had once been her comrades. She tried to scream but found her voice completely useless. She couldn’t bear to hear the crunching. Then, the monster stormed through its cave, and came back with a ghastly mix of elements. Susan felt her body quake as the beast gave life to a horrendous machine that blended the items together. The beast then took an iron pan and spread in the mixture. It then carelessly tossed the bits and pieces of what had once been her friends and family into the pan and tucked it into a fiery oven. The creature licked its chops and, spying Susan, seized her and bit right through her. Then, about thirty minutes later . . . “Thank you, Mommy, I love this apple pie!”

Magic Candy One Halloween night there was a haunted house in a graveyard. In the haunted house there were spirits, ghosts and zombies.. there was a kid trapped in a cage. On Halloween night a girl went into the haunted house. She was in there for a long time. Her friends were too scared to go in. they were worried about her. They were calling for her. She finally came out when. When she came out her hair was blood red and long. Why is your hair different? I ate ten Halloween candies. Maybe that made my hair different. Another little girl with short hair! I want magic candy! She ran into the house. But when she came out she was 10 feet tall. Why are you taller than you used to be? Well, I ate three Halloween candies. Maybe that made me taller. We think it did, said all her friends. All the kids wanted to try the magic candy so they all ran into the house but were never seen again.

Vampire Soccer Game One Halloween morning I woke up and got ready for my soccer game. When we got to the field we were stretching and the other team’s bus showed up. They got out. We gasped. Mummies were unloading their stuff. When the coach stepped out we were almost fainting. We could not believe our eyes, a vampire! We started the game. Horrified, they attacked. They were winning 10-0 until it started raining. A drop fell on the vampire and they all melted! We quickly scored a bunch of points and won.

I had written on the back of my hand the night before. The woman made me swear I would tell no one about this task. As I walked through town, I searched for the three items requested. Sitting on a bench in the park was a businesswoman, chatting away on her cellular phone. I sighed and thought about the money and how I could pay off anything I owed the woman as I casually crept over, snagged the purse and ran. “My bag! Stop that thief!” the woman yelled, but I had already hidden in a dark and damp alley, pulling my hood up and putting the handbag inside my zip-up sweater to run back to the cave. Confused that I was unable to find the cave yesterday, I continued with my tasks. To get a man’s glasses would be slightly harder, but I hastily walked down the old town’s sidewalk. Sure enough, a man was snoring while leaning against one of the shops. Once again, I casually tiptoed over and stole the glasses off the tip of his nose. I started to run towards the forest and thought about how the man would need new glasses and probably wouldn’t be able to see now, but my money could pay for anything like that later. I ran towards the area where the tunnel should have been, as well as the woman’s purse I’d left, but both were nowhere to be seen. Walking away after setting the glasses down where the tunnel should have been, I became more confused than before. What game was this ghost-person-thing playing? I didn’t

know . . . But, tomorrow I would return at night like instructed. And I would have my riches. Finally. On my supposedly last-task day, I walked by the park’s playground. A lone child was playing in the sand box, a cute little girl. Tight curls and wide eyes. She held onto a worn-out bunny plush, and was looking around blankly with no parents that seemed to be about. I watched her from a distance as she held onto the rabbit’s paw now, picking up a shovel and digging aimlessly. I sighed, as this task seemed hardest. But with a slight ache in my heart, I ran over quickly, tore the beloved plush toy from the child’s hand and sprinted away towards the forest as I heard her crying all the way until I reached the heart of the forest. The sun was setting now, and I was in a tree yawning. I looked at the sun, and I held the rabbit. I looked at my watch, and it was past eight o’clock. I hopped out of the tree and called about. “Hello-o-o? Are you here? I brought you the toy,” I said, as loudly as I could. Suddenly I heard cackling. “Foolish, selfish girl! You think only of yourself! There are no riches!” I was about to come up with a retort as I fell down a hole once again, fire illuminating the Cave Downhill once more. “But, wait!” I cried, but it was too late as the ghost cackled evilly once again. It swooped out of the cave, the opening closing up and the fire going out after it. “Wait . . . “

Abandoned Montauk House One cold Halloween evening, Will and I were dropped off in Montauk to Trick or Treat. It was getting dark when we went to knock on a door. We didn’t know if someone was in there. The door opened on its own and we stepped in. Suddenly, we were invaded by zombies. We tried to get something to fight them off. We ran through the house looking to find a way out. There was no exit. We did find Nerf guns in a sealed room. We ran to the kitchen and found a jar of jalapeños. We put the jalapeños in the Nerf guns and shot the zombies. When the jalapeños hit the zombies, they turned into fabric and fell to the ground. Once we had destroyed all the zombies, we found a batteringram. We used it to smash through the door and escape. We ran to the corner and found my dad waiting to pick us up. That was the last time we ever went to Montauk!

Joe and the Blackburn Demons One day after school Joe was walking down his dark, vinecovered gravel road back to his house in the blackest part of Blackburn Woods. Joe hated these woods. The overhanging soot-stained branches seemed to want to snatch him up, an innocent thirteen year old boy, and throw him into their midst. Today, though, Joe had asked Caroline to come to tomorrow night’s fall dance at the school. She had said yes, so Joe was in high spirits. These trees, he thought nothing of them today, and he would snap them into twigs if he had to. When Joe reached his creaky old house, he walked in through the front door. “Hello?” he called. No one replied. Joe sat down on his beige design covered living room couch. He set to work on his load of homework for about two hours. His stomach growled, so he got up and got a light snack, knowing dinner was Luca Wallace Grade 7 Montauk School

only an hour or so away. Unexpectedly, loud vicious growling sounded from his mother’s bedroom. Joe was unnerved. His mother was not supposed to be home from work for another three hours, at eight o’clock. Joe gingerly tip-toed down the hall to see what the ominous raucous was about. When he reached the end of the hall, he heard the growling again, coming from his mother’s bedroom. He cautiously opened the door, and saw his black lab Oscar and his Siamese cat Carlyle were in a fight. Joe sighed with relief and separated them. When Oscar and Carlyle were in separate rooms, Joe sat back down on his couch. He checked his watch. It read six o’clock. Joe got up, made some frozen pizza and headed to bed, too tired to do anything else. He was just recovering from his fright, caused by Oscar and Carlyle. The next day at lunch in the school cafeteria, Joe was sitting with a bunch of friends, but he wasn’t talking. He was so tired. He didn’t get any sleep that night. He was just too frightened by every creak, every clatter. He trudged on through the day, trying not to fall asleep. He kept getting dizzy spells, and was relieved once he got home. He laid down on his bed and fell asleep. When he awoke, his clock read 7PM. He had to meet Caroline in half an hour! He raced down the hall, hopped into the shower, and got dressed in his new, expensive

The Attack Of The radioactive Bird I remember the day as if I was reliving it. It was 1951, I was 10 years old. My father, Mr. Wilson, worked as a scientist on the Camp Hero Air Force base in Montauk, NY. He was the operator for when they were doing to top-secret experiments with the radar tower. The scientists were not aware that the amount of radiation coming off the disk was deadly. The also did not know a bird was making her nest in the radar dish. The bird laid an egg and as she flew off she hit the dish of the radar tower and broke her neck and died. At first nothing happened, but on the second day of the eggs’ life, it started growing really fast. It took the egg and week and then it hatched. The baby bird was truly ugly. The skin was showing around its neck, its feathers were huge, made unnaturally large because of the radiation. The beak was rounded and had teeth. Its eyes were yellow and glowing. It stood up on ling skinny legs and looked around. Jr. Roosevelt was playing in his back yard. He was thinking how beautiful the day was. All of a sudden a giant shadow fell over little Jr. and his head was ripped off. His body was clutched in spiky iron talons and carried off back to the nest. Mr. Wilson was monitoring the radar tower when suddenly it stopped! He walked up the stairs to see what was going on. He opened the hatch to the roof and saw a small CONTINUE READING ON WWW.INDYEASTEND.COM

tuxedo. He brushed his teeth and flew down the stairs. It was 7:20. Joe flung himself through the front door and ran as fast as he could down the gravel covered road. He did not know at the time, but he would never see that road again. When Joe reached Caroline’s house, he was late, out of breath, and a total mess. He cleaned himself up as best he could, and rang the doorbell. A few moments later, Caroline’s mother answered the door. “Hello, Joseph,” she said cheerfully. “Hi!” replied Joe. “Is Caroline ready?” “Hold on a sec, let me check,” she said, climbing the stairs as she spoke. A minute later, Caroline appeared. She was in her dress and she looked nice, but she also looked sullen, like she was just crying. But she put on her best smile, and they set off down the road. When they arrived at the school, they entered the gymnasium. It was silent. That wasn’t right. Joe was about to say something when all of the doors opened and a crowd of people bustled in from all sides. They were ominously quiet. They all had the same expression as Caroline. They were all staring at him. Suddenly, Caroline walked towards them. Joe called her back, but she ignored him and continued. When she reached them, she turned and snapped her fingers. The people roared and started morphing into the most hideous

creatures. Vampires with blood red fangs, ten-foot tall werewolves with claws the lengths of butcher knives and black, smelly matted fur. There were animal headed demons and fire-breathing dragons the size of school buses, bats with red eyes, ghosts with gloomy features, and blackskinned, blood thirsty zombies. They were coming at him from all sides. Strangers, friends, were now all enemies. Joe was frozen in fear, and the demons quickly swarmed, with Caroline at the head. Joe screamed, being bit, torn, and bloodied, but was abruptly cut off, as his decapitated head hit the ground. Joe was no more. When the police arrived, all they found was a bloodied gym floor, tattered tuxedo remains, and a decapitated head of a young boy, who was identified as Joe by his mother. She cried when she recognized the face. She looked up at the full moon, and felt a sliver of hope, but that hope quickly dissipated when she saw the demons falling from the sky, from the ground and the trees, as they engulfed the bystanders. The last thing she saw was the red fangs of Caroline the Vampire. The rise of the demons sent the world into chaos and despair. The plants died along with the humans and all animal life, and what we called Earth is now the black planet that belongs to the dead and the demons.

The Fishman Strikes Back An eerie fog as thick as pea soup engulfed the Napeague Stretch as Jamal Johnson and Little Tree drove out toward Montauk to go surf fishing on Halloween Night. Jamal and Little Tree had served together in the navy for many years. Jamal drove and Little Tree rode shotgun. “Do you want to hear a story?” Little Tree asked. “Sure” replied Jamal. “OK. It was the year 1769. My great grandfather, Little Fish, was walking on the beach at night when he found the remains of a ship. He scoured the beach and after an hour of searching he found a crewmember from the ship. “I’m Little Fish – what happened to your ship and crew? “I’m Captain Timothy Jones. We were sailing up to Boston when this thing jumped up onto the ship. It had the body of a man, the head of a fish, webbed hands, the legs of a deer, and big red glowing yes. It picked up two crewmembers and leapt back into the sea. It kept doing it until it took eight crew members, I was the only one that survived,” the Captain said. ”I’ve heard of that creature. The
Reel Deal
By Miles X. Logan
by Asher Lee ARIES (Mar. 20 - Apr. 20) There is an abundance of energy for you these days, so use it wisely. Seek out the joy and fun and avoid the short fuse and frustration that can come along with this much energy. Find the fun and try and play a little. You’re good at it, so make time for simple joy and playfulness. Keep your eyes on all that is good. TAURUS (Apr. 20 - May 21) Things may come too easy this week and in true crazy Taurus fashion you may fail to take advantage of these “too easy” things. I know you like to work for things, but remember that the power is within you and taking advantage of opportunities which present themselves won’t be taking a short cut, it’s taking advantage of opportunities the Universe provides. GEMINI (May 21 - June 22) Excellent week for socializing or just sitting and reading a good book, or both. Your mind is pretty sharp these days, so do your best to balance thinking with being. Take time out from your busy schedule to do some nothing. The energy is so busy and it may be easy for you to stay so busy you forget to take a break. Remember to balance things. CANCER (June 22 - July 23) Don’t allow your career goals to override your emotional needs. That is the challenge this week. It will be fine to go with the flow of things as long as you remember to keep your emotional needs in the mix. You are far too emotional to omit those needs from any equation. Feel all that you feel -- just remember to go with the flow so that you don’t get stuck in any one feeling. VIRGO (Aug. 23 - Sept. 23) Time for a heart to heart with the ones closest to you. If you have been waiting for the right time to say some hard things, this week is the time. This is a time of healing and changes you make now will have long lasting healing effects. Be bold and choose the healing path, even if it isn’t easy. LIBRA (Sept. 23 - Oct. 23) It’s all about love and romance and attraction and passion. This energy is so big this week that you will need to make sure that you take things one step at a time or you could give someone close the wrong signal, or end up in over your head. Slow and steady is the mantra and just remember to honor your considerable powers of attraction and that you may be coming off more flirtatious than you intend. SCORPIO (Oct. 23 - Nov. 22) There has never been a better time to dedicate your energy to something that will need all of your concentration. Your mind is strong and penetrating right now as are your intentions in romance. Make a commitment if you have been waiting for the right time. Do take some alone time so that you can feel where in your life or in the world you want to dedicate this considerable energy. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22 - Dec. 21) Give special attention to the details this week and then put your fears aside and take the lead in any situation if you have the opportunity. Ever notice that what we tend to worry about never seems to happen? Well, almost never. Worry is a waste of your time. Come back to your naturally optimistic self, leave the worry behind, and LEAD. CAPRICORN (Dec. 21 - Jan. 20) Trust your instincts this week and don’t buy someone else’s rap about how you are supposed to do something or who you are supposed to be. This is the time for you to stretch yourself and allow yourself to feel the power of who you are. You are bigger than you give yourself
Today’s Birthday: Tina Turner, 1939 Annie Mae Bullock from Brownsville Tennessee was only 18 when she was asked to join Ike Turner’s touring rock show as a back-up singer. It wasn’t long before she became the star of the show, her sultry good looks, dynamic singing and energetic dancing talents would bring her international fame. Though mega-hits like “River Deep, Mountain High” and “Proud Mary” made them one of the most popular acts in the country, Ike’s abusive behavior – the pair eventually married – caused Turner to quit the band and leave Ike in 1974. After a decade she resurfaced with a new album, Private Dancer (the song was written for her by Mark Knopfler of Dire Straits). It was the second single, though, that struck gold. “What’s Love Got To Do With It,” written by another Englishman, Terry Britten, became a world wide smash, and Tina was back with a vengeance. She starred in the movie Thunderdome a year later and Britten penned another chart topper for her “We Don’t Need Another Hero.” She stopped touring in 2000 and curtailed her recording work as well. And yes, she still has the best legs you’ve ever seen.
permission to be and this is the time for you to free yourself to be your big, expressive self. Do not diminish yourself with your thoughts or words. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20 - Feb. 19) You are a natural activist and way shower. You organically see how we as the human race can move forward and where one can make a difference. Now you get to choose the lifestyle and the quality of life you want to lead. Do you want to live a life as a leader, as someone actively involved in social change, or do you want to lead a quieter life that is more dynamic within your little world? Either is fine, just choose. PISCES (Feb. 19 - Mar. 20) Truly inspired time as well as a time to take action on that inspiration. This is a foundation setting time and all that you put in motion now will be around for a long time to come. Trust your intuition and your inspirations and then get moving. Not a time to sit on the sidelines, a time for building and creating and movement – for sure! NOTE: If you were born at the end or beginning of a sign, read the sign before or after your birthday. Coming Soon Anonymous * (PG-13) A brilliantly c o n c e i v e d whodunit set in Elizabethan England – who really wrote some of the works attributed to Shakespeare? Scholars have speculated for ages that more than one writer created literature’s most extraordinar y body of work. Whether plausible or not, this film suggests an answer. Vanessa Redgraves plays Queen Elizabeth I. Bridge School Benefit (NR) Neil Yo u n g , D a v e Mathews, Carlos Santana, Beck and many others rip it up in the 2011 edition of Young’s annual benefit concert. Don’t miss it.
New on DVD Pirates Of The Caribbean: On Stranger Tides Johnny Depp camps his way through the latest in the hugely popular series, and Penelope C r uz j o i n s t h e fun. Geoffrey Rush returns as Barbossa. Get the family together, buy some goodies, and enjoy. Now Playing Martha Marcy May Marlene (R )
Four days after its “exclusive premier” at the Hamptons International Film Festival Martha is released worldwide by Searchlight Fox sans the 428 ticket price. John Hawkes is mesmerizing as a cult leader, and Elizabeth Olsen plays a troubled teen cult member trying to return to normal life. It’s a chilling, provocative, and scary flick. The Three Musketeers (PG-13) Another one? Yep. This time Orlando Bloom leads the three buds through perilous times. Milla Jovovich plays the evil Milady. As usual, it’s a fun ride, just like the other 43 versions. Footloose (PG-13) The remake of the 1984 classic has all the earmarks of a mega-hit. Newcomers Kenny Wormald and Julianne Hough take on the Kevin Bacon and Lori Singer roles, and director Craig Brewer (Hustle & Flow) delivers a fresh, new approach. The basic plot is the same, at least on paper: Ren comes to small southern town from Boston, only to learn teens are not allowed to party-hearty. Pretty soon, Ren finds a pretty girl named Ariel who just happens to be the preacher’s daughter. Pretty soon, loud music and wild dancing ensues. It’s energetic, the music rocks, and the kids dance their arses off. Go see it. The Woman (R) Sometimes ya need guts and gore when the winter looms and the nights turn cold and dreary. This should do ya – a woman living in the woods, named Pollyanna, oddly enough, has a few surprises in store for a nearby family – and they are not pleasant. The Way (PG-13) Martin Sheen does his best to navigate this schmaltzy father/son flick directed by and starring Emilio Estevez, who happens to be -- ta da -- his real-life son. It seems dad decides to follow his son’s footsteps after the younger man is killed hiking in France. It would have been more fun if Charlie Sheen had a part.

Method Pre-heat your oven to 425. In a small bowl add all dry ingredients for the chicken to make your spice rub. Now in a large mixing bowl add the chicken and all the wet ingredients. Mix well and when all the chicken has been evenly coated add half the spice rub. Mix one more time and then evenly lay the chicken pieces out on a sheet pan lined with parchment paper. Bake for 30 minutes. After 30 minutes take the sheet pan out and dust the chicken with some of the remaining spice rub. Bake for another 7 minutes. When the wings are done and cooling for a few minutes gather all the ingredients for the blue cheese dipping sauce and fold together gently in a mixing bowl. Plate and enjoy. www.chefjoecipro.com

forgive and forget all evil against me and that in all instances in my life you are with me, I want in this short prayer to thank you for all things as you confirm once again that I never want to be separated from you in eternal glory. Thank you for your mercy toward me and mine. The person, must say this prayer 3 consecutive days. after 3 days, the request will be granted. This prayer must be published after the favor is granted. My prayers were answered. Thank you so very much. As requested by J.L. 48-40-35
