Local Author Fashions A Spellbinding Novel

Readers who enjoy hunkering down with a good book during the holiday season should grab a copy of Prayers Of An Igbo Rabbi, an eerie thriller that is impossible to put down, by Sag Harbor’s Richard Cummings.

Cummings, a scholarly type to be sure, learned a valuable lesson – how to lure in the reader and tighten the noose – at Princeton, Columbia Law School and the other institutions of higher learning where he studied.

His novel is accessible yet multilayered and it is based on a true story – and a haunting legend many swear is the ghostly truth.

The protagonist is a Hamptonsbased writer, ever so slightly bored by the endless stream of social gatherings and blustery hosts. “His wife gets a gratuitous e-mail about real estate on St. Simons Island,” Cummings related. The protagonist visits the island on the coast of Georgia to look it over. The plot mirrors the author’s real experience.

“I was teaching at a law school in Atlanta, and some people told me it was a really nice place.” Soon after, “I met a guy teaching at the local community college and he asked me

if I had heard about it.”

“It” – is at the core of the legend of Igbo Landing and the heart of Cumming’s book. As a slave ship from West Africa carrying captured citizens from the Igbo nation approached Savannah in 1803, there was an uprising on board. “The uprising was put down,” Cummings related. “They were put on a smaller boat in chains.”

Rather than live a life of servitude the proud Igbo (sometimes spelled Ibo) marched into the deep end of a marshy creek and died. That much is factual, the author noted. But it was not the end of the story.

Craig Dominey, in The Moonlight Road, gives perhaps the best account of the legend and myth surrounding that singular event.

“Near the mouth of Dunbar Creek on Georgia’s St. Simons Island, there’s a section of swampy marshland where some fishermen refuse to cast their lines. In the daytime, it doesn’t look any different from the other vast marshes stretching across Georgia’s coastal islands.

“But when night falls, it is said that one can hear a different sound entirely. Swamps are known to make strange sounds at night. But

if you listen closely, you may hear what sounds like the faint rattling of chains drifting across the marsh, followed by an eerie chant: ‘The water brought us the water will take us away.’

“If you think your ears are deceiving you, think again. For the old timers in the area will tell you that what you’re hearing is the brave warrior Oba, leading his people on their final march home.”

Cummings visited the island twice to get the feel for the setting. “I had my first introduction over 10 years ago. I went down and did some research and the story began to develop.”

The book functions on several levels. Thomas Spalding, who had purchased the shipment of slaves, was an extremely prominent Georgian. The Igbo, who lived where Nigeria is located, “were renowned throughout the American South for being fiercely independent and unwilling to tolerate the humiliations of slavery,” according to one scholar.

At its core, often between the lines, the book explores how American history obscured the roots of the American slavery movement, specifically the mysticism that was so much a part of the slave culture. That is for the reader to discover, though, whilst in the midst of a page-turning thriller – a murder investigation that draws in the main charactor. Suffice it to say there is a very fine line between myth and reality.

Cummings is not a writer to be trifled with – he chooses his battles carefully. The Pied Piper: Allard K. Lowenstein and the Liberal Dream, published in 1986, caused an international stir when he revealed Lowenstein – a onetime Congressman from Nassau County who became a darling of the sixties peace movement – was a CIA informant. But that’s another story, for another fire on another winter’s night.

Prayers Of An Igbo Rabbi is available at bookstores and of course, on Amazon. It’ll make one hell of a gift – just be careful not to bend the pages while you read it first.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 (PG-13) The most anticipated film of the year, and it is a blockbuster in every sense of the word, certain to smash box office records all over the world. The finale of the series is the best yet, an epic that tantalizes, amazes, and ultimately satisfies. If it’s not a contender for the Best Movie Oscar, it damn well should be. It’s the film event of the year, if not the decade.

Don’t miss it.

Midnight In Paris (PG-13) This is Woody Allen’s best film in decades, a charming and delightful story of a group of people who interact in Paris.

Allen has crafted an absorbing script, and as usual his deft camera work allows the actors to mine their considerable talents. Owen Wilson turns in an Oscar worthy performance -- Rachel McAdams, Marion Cotillard, Kathy Bates, and Carla Bruni co-star.

Go and enjoy this master filmmaker at his best.

The Artist (PG-13) A silent screen star circa 1927 realizes that the coming “talkies” will end his career; meanwhile, a young extra dreams of stardom. This Weinstein offering, certainly outsidethe-box, is an example of a production company taking chances and succeeding – the film is a wonderment, where-in actors shine, lighting and costumes rule, and there isn’t a special effect or 3-D frame in sight. A terrific, must-see film.

The Descendants (R) We have our early Best Actor favorite and he is – ta da — George Clooney, who turns in a flawless performance as a father forced to consider selling his family land in Hawaii after his wife suffers an accident and lapses into a coma.

Written and directed by Alexander Payne, whose Sideways also exhibited his ability to make profound films with a light touch. From the Kaui Hart Hemmings novel, this film is one of the

Moneyball PG-13) Baseball fans never dreamed that the 2003 book about Billy Bean could actually be made into a movie but Bennett Miller has done just that, and Brad Pitt turns it into an Oscar-worthy vehicle. Casting Philip Seymour Hoffman as Oakland A’s manager Art Howe was a stroke of genius.

Mission: Impossible Ghost Protocol (PG-13) We know, we know, it’s hard to fathom that Tom Cruise can be such an effective macho guy. In this episode his character, Ethan Hunt, goes undercover after the IMF is shut down.

His mission: clear the good name of the agency. Guess what? It rocks, a mesmerizing action ride so intense that it ranks among the year’s best. Don’t miss it.

War Horse (NR) Steven Spielberg probably won’t be nominated for Best Director (he’s never won an Oscar) but this film will lead the league in the Tears Shed category for sure. Bring hankies and enjoy the East Hampton resident at his best.

Detective Dee and The Mystery Of The Phantom Flame (NR) Chinese director Tsui Hark turns in a masterful murder mystery that should garner a Best Foreign Film Oscar nomination. Set in ancient China, it is a who-done-it with many layers, incredible intrigue, and chilling scenes.

Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes (PG-13) The prequel to the popular Planet movies in the late sixties and seventies (and the remake as well), this film uses actual apes instead of Charlton Heston et all. The technology is awesome, though, and the human actors ain’t bad, either. Starring James Franco, John Lithgow, Brian Cox. Look for Andy Serkis as Caesar – he played Gollum in the Lord of the Rings trilogy.

Bridesmaids (R) Judd Apatow’s latest takes an interesting turn from his usual – in which overweight ugly guys get incredibly good looking girls and make stupid jokes. Apatow, the producer, lets the girls take over in this one, and thanks to a smart and sassy script by Annie Mumolo and Kristen Wiig (who also stars) the movie has sparks of serious laughter and a thing or two to say about love, friendship, and feminine sensibility. Of course, it’s gross and stupid in some spots, but that must be Apatow putting his two cents in. All in all it’s a great Girl’s Night Out movie.

The 60s icon honed his reputation as a freaky, anti-establishment rebel, but in reality Frank Zappa was more at home in the living room with his kids than on some wild all-night drug fueled rampage.

Equally at home playing doo-wop or classical, Zappa’s legendary guitar prowess allowed him to easily move from genre to genre, often in the course of a single composition.

A sickly child, Zappa moved with his family to the West Coast as a teenager and found work as a session guitarist and songwriter.

His first album with his newly formed group, The Mothers of Invention, entitled Freak Out, was unlike anything ever heard before – his mastery of electronic guitar music coming several years before Jimi Hendrix hit the big time.

The money generated allowed Zappa to compose, record and tour on his own schedule, which most often included raising his four children.

Despite his image, he never took hallucinogenic drugs and only tried marijuana a few times. The Mothers 1968 album We’re Only In It For The Money is considered one of the most original pieces of music in rock history.

Zappa was apparently exposed to a number of dangerous chemicals as a child, which contributed to his oftentimes fragile condition. He made headlines in the 1980s for his passionate opposition to Tipper Gore’s Parents Music Resource Center or PMRC, an ill-conceived attempt at censorship. He was also in the forefront of the digital recording movement.

Zappa died of cancer in 1993, having achieved worldwide fame – and notoriety. He was inducted to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame two years later and received a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 1997.

Raspberry Shortbread Cookies Ingredients 1 1/4 cup flour 1/2 cup sugar 6 tsp butter softened 1/2 tsp baking powder 1/2 tsp vanilla extract 1/4 tsp salt 1 egg 1/2 cup of quality raspberry jam powder sugar

Method Mix the first seven ingredients in a bowl with a mixer on low. Shape into a ball and refrigerate for two hours or freeze for 20 minutes. Preheat oven to 350.

On a floured surface roll dough until it becomes 1/8 inch thick. Cut out dough in heart shapes and cut out the center of half the cookie shapes. Place on an un-greased cookie sheet and bake for 6 to 8 minutes. Remove and cool.
