YMCA Planning Upgrades The YMCA East Hampton RECenter is undertaking upgrades to its facilities systems, including the services to its pool area and heating and air conditioning systems. The RECenter has submitted its upgrade proposals to the Town of East Hampton. The Town, which as the owner of the RECenter building, is responsible for the facility’s capital repairs. Juan Castro, the Executive Director of the RECenter stated “We are looking at all alternatives to

improve the water treatment services and the air quality in the pool area necessitated by the popularity of the pool facility. An engineer has been hired to assist with this project.” Because of the heavy use of the pool facility, the RECenter decided to investigate the quality of the air and water in the pool environment at its facility. The Suffolk County Health Department inspected the pools last November and December and on both occasions found them safe for the public.

Wölffer Estate Vineyard Purchased By Jessica Mackin Wölffer Estate Vineyard in Sagaponack has been purchased by Joey Wölffer and Marc Wölffer, two children of founder Christian Wolffer. The vineyard was established 25 years go, planted over potato fields. “Our father’s most enduring legacy was Wölffer Estate Vineyard and Winery, a passion which we are committed to growing in his honor,” stated Joey Wölffer on Monday morning. “This year marks our 25th anniversary . . . It took my father years of hard work, creativity and vision to build a winery here, and we look forward to working with our team to continue to realize his dream of making world-class wines.” Marc Wölffer said of the 71-acre vineyard, “We welcome thousands of visitors to our tasting room yearround to share in the beauty of our vineyard and winer y, and to discover locally-hand crafted wines. Now more than ever, we look forward to introducing more people to what my father built and to share our high quality wines as

we continue our family heritage in the wine industry.” Joey Wölffer, an entrepreneur, is a New York native. She created the Styleliner, a luxury accessories boutique on wheels. Joey remains at the forefront of mobile accessories and is expanding the Styleliner brand nationwide. Marc Wölffer’s career expertise has spanned the international restaurant, real estate and winery industries. Marc currently resides in Palma de Mallorca Spain with his four children where he has opened three restaurants and is developing apartments. In addition to his wine investment here in the Hamptons, he also owns vineyards in Spain and Mendoza, Argentina. One of the most visited destinations in Long Island Wine Country, Wölffer is an American winery with a decidedly European character. Marc and Joey both look forward to upcoming events to celebrate the 25th Anniversary of the vineyard. jessica@indyeastend.com

The

Reel Deal

By Miles X. Logan

Visit indyeastend.com for up to the minute theater listings and show times. An asterisk after the title denotes Miles’ top picks.

Coming Soon

Josh Brolin and Ryan Gosling play the good guys. It quickly evaporates into a noisy bang bang, and Emma Stone goes down with the ship. Rueben Fleischer (Zombieland) directs with a heavy hand.

New On DVD

Hansel and Gretel: Witch Hunters (PG-13) Really. We don’t know how Jeremy Renner got roped into taking this role, but we suspect a great deal of money had a lot to do with it. Gemma Arterton plays the sister, and the pair merrily hunts down evildoers until they themselves become targets. You’d have to be pretty lonely or very bored to go see it.

New To Theaters

Frankenweenie Fresh off its Oscar nomination for Best Animated Film, Tim Burton’s off-kilter fantasy comes to your living room. It’s fascinating, but as with most of Burton’s work, some of the scarier images might prove too much for small children.

Now Playing My Brooklyn (not rated) A documentary by Kelly Anderson that chronicles changes in the famed borough since the filmmaker moved there in 1988. The question to ask yourself before buying a ticket is, “Do I really care?”

Gangster Squad (R ) Sean Penn plays mob kingpin Mickey Cohen and he runs amuck in LA circa 1949.

Storage 24 (R) This silly sci-fi effort, about two London couples caught in an endless maze of tunnels and a storage facility, has flop written all over it. There’s a reason why bad movies are released in the throes of winter.

Miles’ Oscar Score Indy film critic Miles X. Logan once again proved his mettle by correctly tabbing 29 of the 34 Oscar nominees in the major categories. His picks were published in last week’s edition. Watch for Logan’s prediction on who will win the Oscars next month – last year he correctly predicted all but one of the winners. Consider this Exhibit A. The Loving Story This documentary about the 1967 Supreme Court decision that legalized interracial marriage is on the short list for an Oscar. Contains actual footage of the couple involved, Richard Loving and Mildred Jeter. Riveting. The Guilt Trip * (PG-13) The Seth Rogen comedy machine is fully revved for this delightful foray wherein a young chemist (Rogen) and his mom (Barbra Streisand) hit the road to hawk his latest invention. The banter, courtesy of screenwriter Dan Folgelman, is often hilarious and always real -- that’s because the script is based on a similar trip Folgelman took. Streisand, the quintessential Jewish Mother, is at her absolute best. Kathy Najimy and Adam Scott co-star. The best comedy of the year -- don’t miss it. The Hobbit: An Unexpected Journey * (PG-13) Peter Jackson, flush from his success with Tolkien’s Lord Of The Rings trilogy, takes what in essence was its prelude

and turns it into a trilogy as well. Many of the same faces reclaim their roles including Ian McKellen (Gandolf), Andy Serkis (Gollum) and Elijah Wood (Frodo). The film is a technical marvel and Martin Freeman is wonderful as Bilbo. Nevertheless, there is a sense that Jackson has stretched things out and diluted the story, and the guess here is the public might well lose interest before the finale, assuming the third film is released during our lifetime. Still, it’s well worth seeing.

Today’s Birthday: Kate Moss, 1974 Fashion’s waifish supermodel was as well known for her partying and romancing as she was for cat walking in the 1990s, when her antics made for frequent tabloid fodder. Moss, discovered at the age of 14, ushered in the so-called “heroin chic” look, and the famous size zero also was involved in a very messy cocaine scandal. Moss, though, always lands on her feet. Over the past 20 years she has earned more money than any other model, and recently designed a line of upscale handbags. She’s back in the news with the recent release of Kate: the Kate Moss Book, filled with juicy tidbits and breathtaking photos. In typical Moss style, she freely admitted that she didn’t really write any of it. ARIES (Mar. 20 - Apr. 20) There are times in our lives when we need to surrender to forces beyond our control and then there are times when we have to be willing to take a stand and hold out for what we really want. Right now, this week, is a time to take a stand. Ask for more – expect more and choose not to settle. TAURUS (Apr. 20 - May 21) Power within knows it can handle anything and doesn’t need to control anyone or manipulate circumstances or people to ‘make sure’ something happens how you think it should. Spend some time at home pondering the idea of power within versus power over. GEMINI (May 21 - June 22) Alright. Enough thinking already. Touch base with your heart and know that it’s not about figuring things out. If you relax your brain by stopping the over processing it’s been going through . . . the answers may have a chance to bubble to the surface. CANCER (June 22 - July 23) This week’s energy is set up so that how things look at the beginning of the week and how they come together at the end will be very different, and better than you may have thought. Take a breath and assume nothing. LEO (July 23 - Aug. 23) You know that ‘patience is a virtue’ thing? You may want to try patience out and add it to your virtues rather than trying to push the river. One step at a time is the best choice right now. VIRGO (Aug. 23 - Sept. 23) It is all about passion and feelings and being moved. If you are moved, do it! If not, wait a moment. Music and poetry and all forms of communication are highlighted. Get out of your head and catch the wave of romance. LIBRA (Sept. 23 - Oct. 23) Getting mentally clear is this week’s goal. Too much emotion can cloud your head and you really need to get and stay connected to some good clean rational thought. SCORPIO (Oct. 23 - Nov. 22) This

week’s energy is aligned to have you feeling good all over. Food may taste better, love may feel sweeter. Dig it. Buy yourself some flowers and then buy some for someone else. Share your good feelings with others. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22 - Dec. 21) Sometimes we just have to free fall and trust it all. Trust ourselves -- past and present. Trust the Universe -- that it knows what it’s doing and trust that others lack the power to deny us our destiny and what is intrinsically ours. Trust that others, too, are part of the plan. CAPRICORN (Dec. 21 - Jan. 20) It is unfortunate that we really can’t control anyone other than ourselves. This week it may be a bit harder to stay detached from what others are doing or not doing. Despite the difficulty, this week you have to keep your fingers out of other peoples’ stuff and mind your own energy. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20 - Feb. 19) Choose to be bold. Stand by what you believe -- all that you believe -and take it all out to the world. Don’t get hung up on issues around power. Stand in your power by adhering to what you believe. PISCES (Feb. 19 - Mar. 20) Getting into a negative spin about yourself, your life, or anyone else for that matter is going to perpetuate the funk and the fear and just may turn off some people you may need in the future. Shake yourself up and get out of the funk. Do something different. NOTE: If you were born at the end or beginning of a sign, read the sign before or after your birthday. Turnip And Horseradish Gratin Ingredients (serves 4) 3 large turnips (peeled and sliced thin on a Japanese mandolin) 3 oz horseradish root (peeled and grated on a box grater) 2 oz aged white cheddar cheese (grated on box grater) 2 oz Parmesan cheese (grated on box grater) 1 c panko breadcrumbs 2 oz butter 1 quart heavy cream 3 sprigs rosemary salt and pepper to taste Method Heat your oven to 350 degrees. While the oven is coming up to temperature you can steep the rosemary in the heavy cream over low heat, while you toast the panko bread crumbs. To toast the panko simply heat the butter in a pan. When the butter is melted add the panko and stir over medium heat until the

breadcrumbs have become nice and golden brown. At this point you can slice your turnips and grate the horseradish and the cheeses. In a mixing bowl, add the grated ingredients together and toss until they are incorporated. Now you are ready to assemble the gratin. First, remove the rosemary from the cream. In a 9 inch x 9 inch baking dish, add a bit of the cream and put down a layer of the thinly sliced turnip followed by salt and pepper, and a generous layering of the grated cheeses and horseradish. Add a bit more cream and repeat, continuing this process until you are out of ingredients. Be sure not to use all the cream if you don’t have to. The idea is to lightly cover the turnips. Finish with a generous layer of bread crumbs and cheese and let it cook at 350 for two and a half hours.
