Real Men Wear Pink A group of locals, headed by Southampton Hospital volunteer and East Hampton Village’s deputy mayor Barbara Borsack, a breast cancer survivor herself, have put together a benefit -- Saturday, 5 to 7 PM at the South Fork Country Club in Amagansett -- with silent auction items like a golf foursome at The Bridge, a golf outing at the Maidstone Club, and over two dozen other big ticket items – to raise funds for three local cancer organizations. All the proceeds will go toward: Lucia’s Angels which provides

The event is dedicated to the memory of Teresa Montant, who passed away on October 27 of last year. She had been aggressively working toward legislation that would help identify women with dense breast tissue as a likely cancer risk. Cloud Atlas (R) This is a big-ticket movie that surely has major Oscar expectations. A tremendous cast led by Oscar magnet Tom Hanks, recruited by Larry (now Lana) and Andy Wachowski of Matrix fame. This project is another sojourn into a surreal world that jumps between past, present, and a future. But the intensity works against it, as does its length, nearly three hours. There is an emotional payoff at the end, but getting there isn’t as much fun

Holy Motors (R) It’s fantastical. It’s science fiction. It’s a comedy. It’s a drama. Leos Carax has given us one of the most ambitious films ever made, yet it tries to be so many things the scenes ultimately rush by in a disjointed way. The plot centers around a time traveler who in the course of a single day, journeys from one life to another, assuming the role of a different character in each. Though confusing, it is visually stunning and critics are raving about it. Go see for yourself.

by Asher Lee

Today’s Birthday: Bill Wyman, 1936 Did you know that the controversial thriller The Manchurian Candidate starring Frank Sinatra opened on this date 50 years ago? Did you know that baseball legend Jackie Robinson died on this date 30 years ago? On October 24, 1936 in Lewishman, England William George Perks was born. He was destined to help shape the history of rock and roll. Perks, the son of a mason, grow up in a rough and tumble London neighborhood. He dabbled in music as a youngster but was already married and working as a bookkeeper when he bought his first bass guitar. Perks removed the frets, thus inventing the fretless bass that is now widely favored by rock musicians. In 1962 he heard that a local band was auditioning bassists and he decided to try out for the band. He was hired, not only because of his skills but because he owned several amplifiers. That band was the Rolling Stones; George Perks changed his name to Bill Wyman to honor a chap he was in the army with. Keith Richards, Mick Jagger, and Charlie Watts have been together ever since. In fact, the band mates announced last week they would do a limited amount of concerts -- including two at the Prudential Center in Newark -- to honor their 50th anniversary. Wyman, who left the band in 1990, has been invited to participate as well. Wyman, by the way, became a notorious name among roadies and groupies – it is said he slept with over a thousand women while touring with The Stones. ARIES (Mar. 20 - Apr. 20) Why don’t you just go have some fun? You’ve worked hard enough so why not take the time to enjoy yourself. Do some skipping and give yourself permission to frolic. Playtime is necessary for everyone and this is a great time for you to take some. TAURUS (Apr. 20 - May 21) Do your best to try and bring things together this week rather than picking things apart and scrutinizing every little detail. New ideas come to the foreground. You may not be able to get to the doing of them right now, as I’m sure you have enough on your plate for the moment, but keep a good record of the ideas nonetheless. You must guard against putting a new, young idea under too much scrutiny. GEMINI (May 21 - June 22) There are four universal addictions. They are: the addiction to intensity, the addiction to perfection, the addiction to the need to know and the addiction to focusing on what isn’t working in our lives instead of what is. The first step to breaking these patterns is to be able to recognize them in ourselves. So check yourself out and see if you can tell when your desire for a clean kitchen slips into an addiction to perfection.

CANCER (June 22 - July 23) Feel the fear and do it anyway is this week’s mantra. This is what courage is by the way. It is not courageous to do things we aren’t afraid of, it is courageous when we face the fears we have and choose to move through them. If asking other people their opinions has only served to frighten you more -- then stop asking and start doing.

A to Z Auto Radiator

LEO (July 23 - Aug. 23) If we could learn to laugh at ourselves a bit more, instead of getting mad at ourselves or others for being quirky, we would be having a much better time. Honor your bedevilments as well as the bedevilments of others. We are all just making it up as we go along, so cut yourself and those around you some slack. See if you can find the humor in other people’s shortcomings as well as your own.

1040A Hortons Ln, Southold, NY 11971 Auto, Truck, Industrial Equipment & RV Cooling, Heating & A/C Systems Mention you saw us in The Independent

VIRGO (Aug. 23 - Sept. 23) Balance is key. If you have been doing too much it may be time to take a break. It may also be useful to keep things simple. If something begins to get overly complicated you may just want to step away. Settle legal issues once and for all. Also, if you have been waiting for the perfect moment to pitch a new idea, this is the time!

LIBRA (Sept. 23 - Oct. 23) Life is movement and change. There are periods of doing nothing, followed by periods of great activity. It is the natural cycle of things. Do things when it is time to do them and do nothing when it

is time to do nothing. Follow your inner fluid and rhythmic nature and trust those inner, deeper feelings. SCORPIO (Oct. 23 - Nov. 22) Become the emotional rock that those around you need to stand on, at least for now. And when you give this support or advice, give it away freely. Don’t become attached to what others are doing with what you are giving, they have the right to do whatever they want. Simply offer the support and step away. Give what you give “clean.” SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22 - Dec. 21) Time to get moving again. Take the reins this week and put into motion those things which have been delayed until now. Delays are over, for the moment anyway, so take advantage of the energy and get things done. Take full responsibility for having the life you want. No one else has control of your destiny except you. CAPRICORN (Dec. 21 - Jan. 20) Take the time this week to discover some things about yourself which you may have forgotten, or perhaps you never knew. Self-knowledge is the key. Take the opportunity to try new things. You may find out more about yourself and you may discover many things you didn’t know you liked or enjoyed by staying open to these new experiences. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20 - Feb. 19) If you catch yourself getting serious about something which is not life threatening you may want to ask yourself why your ego is invested there. What are you so afraid of losing? Catch yourself in the middle of a serious ego moment and really look at why and how your ego got engaged. You may want to ask your ego to take a break. PISCES (Feb. 19 - Mar. 20) It is time to remember to mind your own energy. You cannot control anyone and you cannot teach people things that they need to learn on their own. Love the people around you by honoring their right to make their own choices and do things in their own way. Find a place within you that can truly be okay and loving regardless of what those around you are doing or not doing. NOTE: If you were born at the end or beginning of a sign, read the sign before or after your birthday. Asher Lee is a professional Astrologer and Tarot reader. Le Va Book Signing And Reading

East Hampton’s Britta Le Va will have an event on November 1, in Chelsea for her newly editioned book, The Cairo of Naguib Mahfouz, which has been enlarged by 40 new photographs. This is an outstanding collection of visual images of the historic city. Each photograph complements a verbal image selected from Mahfouz’s writing. The poet Max Blagg will read from a text of Mahfouz, which will be accompanied by a slide show of images from her book. A selection of her work will be exhibited in the gallery. Le Va, a well known photographer and author, is a longtime admirer of Mahfouz and his novels, and shared his fascination and love for Cairo, where Mahfouz lived his entire life. She has published two books on Egypt: the Egyptian Pyramids as well as her latest work. She will be signing copies of the latter at the event. Le Va studied at the New York University Institute of Fine Arts with renowned Egyptologist, Professor Bernhard V. Bothmer, and as a photographer worked closely for many years with leading Egyptologists in Egypt. She has exhibited her photography in Egypt, Holland, and the United States. Her work has been published in books and magazines. Le Va is a longtime resident of East Hampton who lives with her husband, Joe Zucker, the internationally renowned artist. Mahfouz won the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1988. He is considered one of the foremost writers of Arabic literature and has authored more than 50 novels. The event will take place at the David Nolan Gallery at 527 West 29th Street 6:30 PM with the reading starting at 7 PM. For more information call 212-925-6190. R.M.

Add the crisped chopped bacon into the pan along with the picked thyme. Cook for another minute to heat all ingredients. Allow the mixture to cool at room temperature for 10 minutes. In a large mixing bowl add the rest of the ingredients along with the cooked onions, garlic and bacon. Mix together and allow it to sit for 10 minutes.
