South Beach Weekend I was thrilled to get out of the snow for the weekend and head to South Beach, Miami to celebrate my bachelorette party. It was a perfect weekend filled with warm, sunny weather. We stayed at RED South Beach, a nice boutique hotel. During the day, we relaxed on the beach and got massages at the Aveda Spa at the Palms Resort. At night we celebrated at Nikki Beach and The Wall at the W Hotel where DJ Jessica Who was spinning. www.hamptondaze.com

Benefit Concert A “Smash”
Independent/Kitty Merrill
By Kitty Merrill
They collected an even $6000 from raffle tickets and donations alone. The inaugural Gregg Rickards Memorial Scholarship Fund Benefit Concert, held last Friday night at the East Hampton High School was, “a smash, an over-the-top evening of music and fun,” according to organizer Patty Collins Sales. Rickards, who died last summer, was a talented musician, with a passion for the art. Sales, who worked with Michael Clark of Crossroads Music and Dr. Marilyn Van Scoyoc to mount the event, is his aunt. Dr. Van Scoyoc served as emcee as well as the conductor of the jazz band, which opened the show with a song featuring the electric bass, Gregg’s favorite instrument. The band also played a tribute to the
late Dave Brubeck. Peter Weiss, who taught Rickards, played the electric upright bass, with John Lupo on alto sax and Jane Hastay on piano, performing the theme song to Dr. Zhivago, “Somewhere My Love.” Vocalist Ashley Marie Reilly sang “What a Wonderful World.” Popular local band Little Head Thinks performed original music. LHT boasts three EHHS graduates on its roster. The next group, Casanova Frankenstein is comprised of jazz band members. They wowed the audience with a cover of Jimi Hendrix’s “Crosstown Traffic.” Mama Lee Rose and Friends brought their unique sound and thrilling vocals to the venue, while the Far East Fiddle Club delighted lovers of Irish music, even prompting a couple of audience
members to an impromptu seated step dance. The EEHS Music Theory Class, led by music teacher Troy Grindle went for the smiles, with their cover of “Funky Town.” Grindle stayed on the stage to surprise spectators with covers of Quiet Riot and Joan Jett hits. Members of the duo MonkFish -- EHHS students Jackson Clark on the drums and harmony and Steven Clark on guitar -- brought a soulful vibe, with their original songs. Jet Set Renegades, featuring more EHHS kids offered supercharged renditions of “Walking on Sunshine” and A-Ha’s “Take On Me.” “That’s why we are doing this scholarship program,” Lisa Bonner of the popular local band, Third Estate, said when she took the stage,
“Those kids were awesome.” The Tree Top Thieves closed the show on a high note with an energetic performance of original songs. In the days leading up to the program, Sales announced additions to the donated raffle prizes. The closer show time came, the more people gave. Donated raffle prizes included a guitar and amp by Bono Custom Guitars, golf foursomes at two local clubs, a stay at the Atlantic Terrace in Montauk, framed prints by local photographer Dell Cullum and more. Crossroads Music provided technical and sound support for the evening. The scholarship will be awarded each year to an East Hampton High School student pursuing a degree in music. kmerrill@indyeastend.com

New In Theaters Sound City (NR) Dave Grohl lovingly produced this documentary about the legendary San Fernando Valley recording studio and the rock legends that recorded there. In a nice twist, Grohl gathers some of
comparison to Midnight In Paris, which earned him the Best Screenwriting Oscar last year. Rome is good, though – our own Alec Baldwin is particularly endearing. Jesse Eisenberg gets the coveted “Woody” role and the master himself co-stars along with the wonderful Judy Davis, Roberto Benigni, and a scintillating turn by Penelope Cruz. The theme is typical Woody: relationships never last, couples inevitably cheat on each other, and growing old sucks.

Side Effects (R) * Steven Soderbergh (sex, lies, and videotape) has fashioned a deeply complex and often disturbing medicalpsychological thriller about a woman (Rooney Mara) whose world turns ugly after she is prescribed an antianxiety drug. Channing Tatum, was her husband, is terrific. Jude Law as the psychiatrist is also superb. This movie is extremely ambitious and difficult to follow, but the payoff is substantial. Young Sári Gábor was discovered in a well-to-do Swiss Boarding School and brought to Vienna to sing when she was only 15. A beautiful young woman, she was crowned Miss Hungary a year later, but was forced to flee her homeland when the Nazis occupied Hungary – her mother was Jewish. Gabor landed in Hollywood, and eventually attracted film producers with her European, urbane chic. Zsa Zsa, as she came to be known, was cast in several movies, but her main profession, it seems, was husbands. She had nine in all, most notably hotel baron Conrad Hilton, with whom she had a daughter. She was a staple on TV series for decades, appearing with Red Skelton, Milton Berle, Bob Hope and on shows like “Gilligan’s Island,” and “The Love Boat.” Gabor was charged with assaulting a Beverley Hills police officer in 1989 and was sued for libel by the actress Elke Sommer for millions – the two had a feud going for decades. In 2009 her attorney revealed Zsa Zsa had lost $10 million investing with Bernie Madoff. She famously was quoted as complaining, “the little people are so . . . little.” ARIES (Mar. 20 - Apr. 20) Resist the urge to stretch the truth in any way this week. Too much energy is around communication and you may take yourself to a place you won’t be able to come back from. Say what you mean and mean what you say. TAURUS (Apr. 20 - May 21) There may be some surprises this week, but it could end being a fine thing to get out of the box by responding in a tempered way to the changes as they come along. If all else fails, try to find the humor in it all. GEMINI (May 21 - June 22) You can expect to have a short fuse these days, so take it easy. Do that counting to 10 thing before you respond. You and everyone else will be happier. CANCER (June 22 - July 23) You
can expect a busy and potentially complicated week this week. Take your time with things and don’t be surprised if you do find yourself slow to react. You may find taking that extra time is beneficial. LEO (July 23 - Aug. 23) This week starts with a clear minded and stand alone kind of energy. However, it is followed by a bit of confusion. Clarity will return by the end of the week. Trust your intuition and trust even the moments when you don’t feel clear. Feel your way through. VIRGO (Aug. 23 - Sept. 23) Easy does it this week. You may find yourself fidgety and prone to impatience. Do some breathing exercises and take your time and cut the rest of us some slack. You are just in a hurry and the Universe

Slow down. LIBRA (Sept. 23 - Oct. 23) Change is good, right? Open yourself to the opportunities that will take you out of your comfort zone. Don’t be in a hurry, but do allow yourself some room to stretch and see if you can have more than you previously thought. SCORPIO (Oct. 23 - Nov. 22) Very interesting energy this week. It’s all about change, but it is also a time when you can bring some really good things into your life. Take action in a stable way and you may find that a surprising change follows your practical intentions. Stay flexible. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22 - Dec. 21) You, like Scorpio above, are having an interesting and complex movement of energy this week. You may want to allow all the facts within a situation to be revealed before you get too excited, either with joy or anger. Ask an outside source for clarity if necessary. CAPRICORN (Dec. 21 - Jan. 20) Something you love may need to be put on a temporary hold while you take advantage of an opportunity
that is too good to resist. A small sacrifice may be just what you need. Fear not, it will come around again. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20 - Feb. 19) Love may find you out of the blue, or you may find yourself with a new sense of affection with someone that you thought you had gotten over. Either way, embrace the love and good feelings that are available right now. PISCES (Feb. 19 - Mar. 20) Look hard within the signs and nudges from the Universe. There may be an opportunity at the edge of your world, so you may have to look a little hard for it. It could be a game changer. Compiled By Jessica Mackin Hamptons Restaurant Week Hamptons Restaurant Week signups have begun for the eleventh annual campaign set to kick off this April. From Sunday, April 7 through Sunday, April 14, participating restaurants offer three-course prix fixe menus for $19.95 or $27.95 or both $19.95 and $27.95, which will be available every night they are open except Saturday when it may only be offered until 7 PM. Originally designed to garner positive publicity and additional business for restaurants, Hamptons Restaurant Week is organized by WordHampton Public Relations, the creators of Long Island Restaurant Week. Over the last decade of H a m p t o n s R e s t a u r a n t We e k , restaurateurs experienced a surge in business, some, by more than 50 percent during the promotion. Many restaurants reported midweek numbers to be up over 50 to 200 percent and some open early just for the week. The campaign also garnered an honorable mention from the MarCom Creative Awards, an international competition recognizing outstanding achievement by marketing and communications professionals. East End lodging entities broaden the scope of the eight-day promotion by offering exclusive Hamptons Restaurant Week deals. Lodging properties may offer special rates that may include 15 percent off accommodations; stay two nights, get the third night free; or stay one night, get the second at half price. (Visit www.hamptonsrestaurantweek. com/diners for current participant lists) Residents and visitors are given the chance to save while dining out at new restaurants (or old favorites), sampling vintages from local and
notable vineyards, or staying at a unique lodging property in before the start of “high season.” For participants, this media-able, valuepricing campaign delivers a surge in business, a return on investment and community goodwill as they put their best foot forward to attract new and returning patrons. Hamptons Restaurant Week has partnered with two standout East End not-for-profit organizations that support the children of our community. Project MOST is a 501(c)3 not for profit organization which offers an after school program committed to providing students academic support, enrichment activities and a positive social environment. Edible School Gardens is a notfor-profit group whose mission is to reconnect children and their families with real food and to empower and inspire local communities to eat well through school gardens, greenhouses, nutrition education and culinary experiences. Diners and restaurants will be able to give back to these organizations, as 100 percent of the funds donated will be donated to these two not-for-profit organizations. As well, Hamptons Restaurant Week participating restaurants that offer a donation program throughout Hamptons Restaurant Week will be listed with the “Give Back” icon on the participating restaurants page. When the diner chooses to dine at these locations a portion of dinner proceeds will go right back to these organizations. Hamptons Restaurant Week is proud to support these local organizations. Organizers believe in giving back to our local communities and especially to local children Hamptons Restaurant Week is

Pork Tenderloin With Brussels Sprouts, Pancetta And Buttery Bread Crumbs Ingredients (serves 4) 1 1/2 lbs pork tenderloin (trimmed & cut into 4 6 oz portions) 2 pts Brussels sprouts (bottoms trimmed and cut into quarters) 3 oz pancetta (diced) 3 lemons juiced 2 gloves garlic 1 1/2 c canola oil 2 tbsp thyme (picked) 3 tbsp butter 1/2 c Japanese bread crumbs 1 tbsp black pepper Method You will need to marinate the pork the night before, or at least a few hours before you plan to serve. For the marinade put the garlic, lemon juice, one cup of canola oil, black pepper, and thyme in a blender cup, then blend on high until emulsified.
Pour the marinade over the pork and refrigerate overnight. The next day after you quarter the Brussels sprouts and dice the pancetta you will need to toast the bread crumbs in two tbsp of butter. Do this by melting the butter in a pan then adding the bread crumbs and stirring over medium heat until golden brown. Set your oven to 400 degrees. Heat a large saute pan or skillet over high heat. Add the oil and heat until it simmers, then sear the pork loins on each side for two minutes. After you sear the second side place the pork in the oven for eight minutes. While the pork is in the oven heat another saute pan over medium high heat. Once it is hot, add the pancetta. When it begins to render and release a bit of fat add one tbsp of butter and the Brussels sprouts.
