Robert Redford Is Back In Action long after the final credits. I love this country, but the one criticism I have is that we’re not good at looking at history as a lesson learned. Instead, it’s an American tradition to just look ahead and be doing, doing, doing,” he explained. “I was of an age, like the protestors, but because I was committed to building my career on the New York theater stage and starting a family I never got involved, but thought about it. Yet I emphasized with them and thought it was a wrong war, one designated by a lot of people that had never gone to war themselves.” His new movie explores the loves of a group of these people decades later. “Unfortunately, it’s 30 years later and some people continue to be trapped by their past and had to go underground or change their names.” Shifting to the home screen, Discovery Channel and Redford take a retrospective look at the singular scandal, “Watergate,” that would forever change the face of American politics. “All the President’s Men Revisited” premieres on Sunday at 8 PM. It was 40 years ago that a

Missing from the cinematic scene for nearly six years, Robert Redford returns with a vengeance this month resurfacing on both the big and small screens. Spearheading this return is The Company You Keep, a gripping action thriller starring and directed by Redford. It’s the day of reckoning for a group of former anti-Vietnam militants, who have managed to remain under the radar for more than 30 years. Based on Neil Gordon’s 2003 novel of the same name, the storyline is triggered by the FBI arrest of Sharon Solarz (Susan Sarandon), a former Weather Underground fugitive wanted in connection with the slaying of a Michigan bank guard. Like a bloodhound, a young ambitious Albany reporter, Ben Sheperd (Shia LaBeouf) immediately smells the opportunity to make a name for himself. Tipped off by an FBI insider, Ben’s questions lead him straight to Jim Grant (Redford), a widowed attorney in upstate New York, raising an 11-year-old daughter (Jackie Evancho). Grant’s refusal to take on Solarz’s case or even discuss it sends up red flags and Sheperd quickly manages to connect the dots.

What ensues is an adrenaline pumped cross country pursuit with Ben and the FBI agents only half a day behind Grant. There’s one person, who can exonerate Jim – his former lover, Mimi (Julie Christie). Jim has to find her first. On his way to that fateful encounter Grant reconnects with his cohorts, a virtual encyclopedia’s worth of veteran actors like Richard Jenkins, Nick Nolte, Sam Elliott, and Stephen Root. “This is such a wonderful cast. I’m blessed with my colleagues coming on board. There’s no money in film these days. It’s shrunk down to a nub. They volunteered their services. There was nothing, except the joy of working with me,” laughed Redford, who made his screen debut in 1962’s War Hunt. He would go on to star in a library’s worth of classics like Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, The Candidate, The Way We Were, The Sting, and The Natural among them. Equally adept behind the camera, Redford ventured into directing with Ordinary People, and earned his first Oscar. “Some movies are like cotton candy. You enjoy it, but forget about it entirely after leaving the theater. I’m hoping that The Company You Keep will give moviegoers something to think about and dialogue about

break-in occurred at the Democratic National Committee’s Watergate offices, which was traced back to President Richard Nixon’s Committee for the re-election of the president. Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein, colleagues at The Washington Post, doggedly investigated the scandal, exposing a long, twisted trail of cover-ups and lies. Along with copping a Pulitzer Prize for their efforts, it spun forth the 1976 landmark movie All the President’s Men, with Redford serving as costar and executive producer. “I wanted this to feel like it was the first time you’re hearing this story, even though it’s one of America’s most notorious political scandals, by juxtaposing the reality of those who perpetuated the crime and those who pursued them in an entirely new way,” said Redford, who is now 76. Redford and Dustin Hoffman, who portrayed Bernstein, will be interviewed, along with current media figures like Jon Stewart. Archival footage, including President Nixon discussing the Watergate burglary in the Oval Office with key aids, brings a contemporary freshness to the documentary. Slightly bewildered, Redford interjected, “Recording his own mistakes actually shows how delusional this man was. I think he really believed he was some kind of historical figure.”

Paris Manhattan (NR) Sophie Lellouche wrote and directed this charming little effort about a young woman whose philosophies are shaped by the films of Woody Allen. The master himself stars. This quirky film, almost surely autobiographical, isn’t for everyone, but it’s warmhearted and breezy.

New On DVD Zero Dark 30 Director Kathryn Bigelow, flush from winning the

Oscar for The Hurt Locker, teamed with its screenwriter, Mark Boal, on an even more topical work about the hunt to kill Osama bin Laden. The movie proved to be one of the more controversial releases in decades, with stark depictions of torture techniques the American government used to interrogate terrorist prisoners. The timing of the film’s release, in the midst of the 2012 presidential race, also raised eyebrows – seen as some as a boost for President Obama, who was in office when bin Laden was finally killed. Putting aside politics, the film is a riveting, though flawed, portrayal of a young CIA operative fixated on capturing bin Laden played by Jessica Chastain. Despite hints to the contrary, the movie is a fictional account. Nevertheless, it ranks at or near the top of the list of best movies released in 2012, Oscar snubs not withstanding.

Now Playing 42 (PG-13) The story of Jackie Robinson, the first black man to play major league baseball, is a compelling one indeed. Unfortunately, this schlock-fest is so cliché-ridden that the drama gets lost amidst the overacting. It has its moments, though. Chadwick Boseman gets the title role and Harrison Ford plays Branch Rickey, the General Manager of the Brooklyn Dodgers who makes the courageous decision to bring Robinson up to the big leagues.

Today’s Birthday: Seth Rogen, 1982 Hollywood’s resident funny man is a Canadian. Seth Rogen had comedy in his blood, writing jokes and performing at bar mitzvahs and bars as a teenager in Vancouver. After winning an amateur comedy contest in 1998 he moved to Los Angeles and landed a job as a writer for “Da Ali G. Show.” He landed a small part in the short-lived “Freaks and Geeks” television series and befriended its director, Judd Apatow. Apatow cast Rogen in in The 40-Year-Old Virgin, and the movie went viral, grossing hundreds of millions of dollars. Rogen and the other stars in the movie -- Paul Rudd and Steve Carell -- would team up with Apatow on several other projects. Apatow then cast Rogen as the unlikely romantic lead in Knocked Up opposite Katherine Heigl, though the actor wanted to work on a sci-fi project instead. The movie made over $200 million. Flexing his new found pull in Hollywood, Rogen wrote, produced and starred in The Green Hornet and although the reviews were tepid, the film did reasonably well at the box office. Rogen married Lauren Miller in 2011. She is, of course, a comedy writer. ARIES (Mar. 20 - Apr. 20) Now is the time to try new things, go new places.
