I spoke to Amanda about her own personal style, her take on fashion, her grandmothers influence and more.
Where do you find inspiration for your line of swim trunks and boardshorts? I find inspiration from my everyday life, my friends and my family. Growing up in Florida provides for a remarkably active lifestyle and, with the Bahamas just a short boat ride away, I also get a lot of inspiration from my love of warm weather, beautiful tropical beaches and water. mediocre Bloody Mary is good but a great Bloody Mary sticks in your memory for years. The Bloody Mary is all about the mix. Use a substandard mix and you’ll have a rather forgettable cocktail despite the use of even the best Vodka. Speaking of Vodka… BevX recommends using a quality, and sensibly priced Vodka. There is no better way to spot a status seeking fool than to witness someone at the bar ordering a Bloody Mary with the addition of the posh, ultra-premium Vodka of the moment. Ingredients 2 oz Vodka BevX Best Bloody Mary Mix (see recipe above) Ice Celery & citrus slice for garnish Salt, celery seed, and black pepper for glass rim BevX Best Bloody Mary Mix 32 oz quality tomato juice Juice of one lime
1 tablespoon prepared horseradish 1 tablespoon Worcestershire Sauce 2 tablespoons Juice from your dill pickle jar (not sweet pickles!)
2 teaspoons ancho chile powder 1 teaspoon chipotle powder 1 teaspoon honey 3/4 teaspoon celery salt 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
Combine all ingredients and stir vigorously, or better yet, shake vigorously. Method: Rim a tall highball glass with salt, celery seed, and black pepper by first wetting the glass with a lime wedge. Fill the glass with ice and then add the Vodka followed by the mix. Add the garnish and enjoy.

Goofy Georgia Warner, Freed
By Kitty Merrill
There are roles for pretty girls and roles for funny girls. But there aren’t too many roles for pretty, funny girls. And Georgia Warner is pretty funny, not to mention gorgeous. After a number of serious roles, she said, she was looking forward to stretching her comedic muscles. “I haven’t been funny in forever,” she said in an interview this week. “I’ve been looking for ways to let my goofy out.” So when the chance to play Slippery Helen in the production of The Cripple of Inishmaan, opening at Guild Hall in East Hampton tonight came along, Warner was thrilled to get the part. Written by Academy Award and four time Tony Award winner Martin McDonagh, The Cripple of Inishmaan tells the story of a community on a remote island off the coast of Ireland in the 1930s. Conflict – sometimes dark, sometimes slapstick – erupts with the news that a Hollywood director is coming to the isolated island to film a documentary. Warner plays the town bully. “She’s a very interesting character. To sum it up -- in a word, she’s a bitch,” said Warner, who jokes she is often
miscast as “the sweet one.” By contrast, Helen is ver y p h y s i c a l l y v i o l e n t . Wa r n e r ’s accustomed to “fight calls” -- as Curley’s wife in Of Mice and Men, she had to practice getting beaten up. Now, she’s practicing being the aggressor. This is Warner’s third time on the stage at Guild Hall in recent years. She played alongside Peter Boyle in Moby Dick Rehearsed and was in the cast with Alec Baldwin in Equus. But those are hardly the first times locals saw her on stage. Born in Manhattan, Warner moved to the Hamptons “almost immediately.” She attended Hampton Day School and lived in Amagansett with her mother Bridget LeRoy and stepdad Eric Johnson until the family moved to New Hampshire. As a child, Warner stepped out on local stages in a variety of school programs, often stealing the show, if not necessarily in line with the script. “I was in The Polar Express at LTV when I was about four and I was supposed to be listening to Santa. But I got bored and started pulling at a thread in my nightgown. It unraveled and I began flossing my teeth with it,” she recalled. The very

first production she can remember “was a show where I played a squirrel and I made my own mask.” All through her childhood in the Hamptons, Warner said, ”I’d create stages where they weren’t, any surface that was elevated, I would get up and perform.” So entranced by performing – it’s probably in the genes, given her Warner Brothers ancestry – Warner applied to the Walnut Hill School for the Arts in Massachusetts when she was just in seventh grade. It wasn’t until she was accepted that she asked to skip eighth grade and head straight to high school. Her education followed the same accelerated path through high school and college. “I was in school to get jobs I felt I
could already be getting if I wasn’t in school.” While she feels at home “wherever I am,” Warner’s gotten a kick out of returning to East Hampton. “It’s cool to come out here and be constantly running in to people who have known me forever, people who will say 'I took you to the duck pond when you were four.'” At 24, Warner’s making her own waves in the industry, and expects The Cripple of Inishmaan to make a splash when it opens tonight. “I think it’s going to be sold out, she said. The show runs through June 9. Douglas On Playing Liberace By Winnie Bonelli
“It was a great love story. These two guys really fell for each other. There are a lot of wonderful, funny moments and joyful moments, but ultimately it ended in tragedy. Ultimately, everybody loses out in the end,” Michael Douglas explained, referring to the emotional and sexual bond between virtuoso pianist Liberace and his much younger boytoy Scott Thorson. Douglas portrays the great showman and piano master in the HBO film Behind the Candelabra. Matt Damon co-stars as Thorson. Even in 2013 when gay marriage is rapidly becoming a viable choice for many Americans, Liberace’s extravagances, excesses and promiscuity would have still provided lively fodder for the weekly tabloids.
The authenticity of this observation can be affirmed by the hype and anticipation surrounding HBO’s biopic. “I have to commend Matt, because I don’t think I would have had the courage at that point in my career to take this on,” Douglas said. “We had a great screenplay, well produced, great director and had a great experience, a really nice experience.” The impetus for Behind the Candelabra was a casual remark made by director Steven Soderberg a dozen years ago on the set of Traffic. Douglas recalled, “Steven said, ‘You know, have you ever thought about Liberace?’ And I looked at him and thought, 'Is this guy messing with me?'” Apparently, that was confirmation enough for Soderberg and executive producer Jerry Weintraub, who reached out to Oscar nominated
screenwriter Richard LaGravenese to adapt Thorson’s memoir. Equally important was supplying their leading men with authentic props, the primary source being the now closed Liberace Museum in Las Vegas. Costume designer Ellen Mirojnick replicated showstoppers like Liberace’s Norwegian virgin fox coat with a 16-foot train, originally worn over a silvery sequined outfit. In total, Douglas alone had 60 changes of clothing. Production designer Howard Cummings proved equally adept, returning to the actual locations like Liberace’s Los Angeles penthouse on Beverly Boulevard, and the Las Vegas Hilton stage and showroom, where today’s stadium seating was replaced by booths from that era. Standing in for Liberace’s Vegas estate, in some scenes, was the

house recently sold by Zsa Zsa Gabor. L i b e r a c e ’s famed master bedroom adorned with replicas of Michelangelo frescoes on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, and adjoining hot tub were built on a soundstage. The one hitch, time wise, no one could have anticipated was Douglas’ 2010’s bout with throat cancer. “It felt like a toothache,” said the 68-year-old actor. “I went to several specialists and they all attributed the pain to an infection. They kept giving me prescriptions for antibiotics.” Nine months later, the diagnosis was unmistakable – Stage Four cancer. Many of his peers feared the worst as Douglas’ weight continued to plunge and most days were spent lounging on the couch between radiation and chemo appointments. Luckily, his type of cancer proved curable. And though he hasn’t totally regained the weight, Douglas claims he’s feeling “great.” In preparation for Behind the Candelabra, Douglas repeatedly watched mountains of clips and films of his alter ego. “It’s a repetition process of looking at a lot of stuff and finding that balance knowing you’re not an impersonator. You’re never going to ever be exactly like Liberace and you try to find a balance that makes you comfortable, makes Steven (the director) secure, and makes myself attractive to Matt,” he laughed. So what about the Mrs? What was Catherine Zeta-Jones’s reaction when she first saw Michael in his full regalia? “Where have you been all my life?" Laughter melts into seriousness, he added, “She has seen the film and is a big fan of it. I think she realizes when you got a nice chance like this, enjoy it.” Undeniably, Liberace’s fans adored him, but he also bore the brunt of his detractors’ jokes. What is Douglas’s opinion? “I think Liberace had a very good sense and a very savvy sense of showmanship. You’ve got to remember, besides all his popularity in Las Vegas, it was the television show that really made him so well known to everybody in the world.” “We talk about it in the movie and he was probably the first person on television to talk directly to the camera. It was one of his great abilities to sort of bring everybody in. And with that campy style, there was a genuine quality about him and his performances. He wanted to make people happy, and that won them.”

Lichtenstein has already established her reputation as one of New York’s hottest young artists known for her anime inspired, doll filled tableaux and the wildly imaginative worlds she creates with her “Word Sculptures.” This exhibition at Vered Gallery marks the next step in her evolution as an internationally acclaimed artist. Jessica Lichtenstein was never obsessed with the world of Japanese animation or its X-rated hentai subgenre, but something attracted her to the small, titillating figurines of its female characters and they have since become central to her body of work. What began as a playful exploration of the figurines themselves—putting them in thought-provoking scenes and miniature dioramas, in various states of undress—has evolved and grown in step with her blossoming career. PEEP SHOW marks the next step in Lichtenstein’s evolution, as an artist expanding on her complex themes of desire, sexuality, lust and female empowerment. The sexually charged hentai characters remain an essential component of the work, but Lichtenstein’s now places them in fantastical, digitally created worlds, rife with frolicking girls - all of them enjoying their surreal, beautiful and eroticized surroundings. Called “Word Sculptures,” these new works feature Lichtenstein’s scenes - scenes that play to those of nude bathers depicted by Renoir, Cezanne or Picasso - tableaux integrated into thick, clear acrylic letters that together spell evocative words, such as “WILD,” “DIRTY,” “BLISS,” “POP” or “WAR,” to name a few. The artist enjoys pushing buttons and testing the boundaries of her viewers and collectors, but she also sees the figures as symbols of lost innocence, fetish objects and idealized forms. “I like depictions of the female form, not in a sexual way, but in a beautiful way,” she says. “Oddly enough it’s mostly women who are drawn to the work. They have the ability to imagine themselves in that world and as that girl.” PEEP SHOW opens with a reception for the artist at Vered Gallery, Saturday from 9 to 11 PM. The exhibition will run through June 17.

Conan Doyle was born in Scotland, though his parents were from Ireland. His father was an alcoholic but luckily, Conan, as he was called, had a wealthy uncle who sent him off to a Jesuit Prep school and later to Stonyhurst College. As a young man Conan was unsure of what career path to take, but he ended up attending Edinburgh and studied medicine. He might well have settled in to a mundane practice in a small town, but he didn’t get along with his partner. Branching out alone, Conan found the going rough and his office empty for long hours. He took up writing to pass the time, and the rest is history. He struggled to find a publisher but finally sold the rights to his first book, A Study In Scarlet, for 25 francs. At first readers paid little attention to the story’s two protagonists: Watson and Sherlock Holmes. Soon, however, the pair caught on and a sequel was ordered, and then another and another. Soon Holmes’s nemesis, Dr. Moriarty, became a staple as well. In 1890 Doyle, tiring of the crime genre, wanted to kill Holmes in a final book and be done with them but his mother talked him out of it. Though Holmes and Moriarty apparently plunge to their deaths in a story called, “The Final Problem” in 1893, the clamor for more stories continued unabated. Finally, in 1903, in a story entitled, “The Adventure of the Empty House,” Holmes reappeared – it was explained he faked his own death to confuse his many enemies. Doyle died in 1930, sparing him the ignominy of having to watch Robert Downey Jr. play Holmes on the big screen. Summer Movies Have A Familiar Look
By Miles X. Logan
During the next three months moviegoers will be inundated with the best – make that the most commercial – Hollywood has to offer. As usual, there are any number of sequels and remakes. Another Iron Man has already been released, and the Star Trek franchise is on its third crew. Prepare for another venerable franchise that started as a TV series: The Lone Ranger, coming to the big screen just in time for the big July Fourth weekend. It’s bound to be a box office smash because its star, Johnny Depp, is box office gold. But wait, kemo sabe: Depp apparently wanted to be the star but not play the title character: instead, it will be Tonto
(Depp) and his faithful side kick (Armie Hammer). Helena Bonham Carter, Tom Wilkinson, and Ruth Wilson co-star, Jerry Bruckheimer produces, and Gore Verbinski directs. Yes, it has Pirates Of The Caribbean written all over it. Remember Superman? In 2013 we get Man of Steel. This time around Henry Cavill plays the title role, but he is really (spoiler alert!) Clark Kent/Superman. It features a formidable cast including: Amy Adams, Kevin Costner, Michael Shannon, and Russell Crowe. Remember Red from 2010? We don’t either, but that didn’t stop producers from making Red 2. The film is about retired CIA agents and stars Bruce Willis, Anthony Hopkins,
Helen Mirren, Mary Louise Parker, John Malkovich and Catherine ZetaJones. Look for it (or not) in late July. It’s hard to believe after seeing Fast And Furious, but Vin Diesel, Dwayne Johnson et al are back, believe it or not, for the sixth installment. Ludicrous and Michelle Rodriguez are along for the ride and Justin Lin directs. Then we have The Hangover 3 and Despicable Me 2. And did we mention Kick Ass 2? Enough said. Two of our favorite filmmakers have new films coming out this summer: Pedro Almodóvar’s I’m So Excited, out in late June, is about three flight attendants who get that sinking feeling. Woody Allen, who won the Oscar for Best Screenplay with Midnight In Paris, brings back

Alec Baldwin to star in Blue Jasmine, and it looks like some scenes were even shot in (Gasp!) The Hamptons. Cate Blanchett co-stars. One of the most anticipated blockbusters is World War Z, a plum vehicle for Brad Pitt to ham it up in. Screenwriter David Lindelof (Prometheus) has already rewritten the ending at least once, so good luck with that. Marc Forester directs but won’t say what the “Z” stands for. There can never be a sequel, but there can be 25 prequels starting with World War “A.” Speaking of big-ticket items, Will Smith brings along his son, Jaden to another world in After Earth. M. Night Shyamalam (The Sixth Sense) directs. There are always a few buddy movies released during the summer. The best this year looks like The Internship starring Owen Wilson and Vince Vaughn. Want a sleeper? The advance word is Louis Leterrier’s Now You See Me is a good one. Jesse Eisenberg, Mark Ruffalo, Michael Caine and Morgan Freeman lead a great cast -- it’s about a team of illusionists that robs banks. Really. (We can’t believe we just said that.) There aren’t nearly as many animated feature films this summer, probably because there are no stories left to make and all the 3D guys needed to take a break. The best of this year’s batch is Monsters University and it is about, oddly enough . . .well, you get the idea. Despicable Me is back, and this time around producers cleverly called it Despicable Me 2. We usually have a movie about the president of the U.S. every year or two, be it Harrison Ford on Air Force Once or Kevin Kline playing pretend prez. This time around Channing Tatum (or is it Tatum Channing?) and Jamie Foxx get all patriotic in White House Down.

In five minutes it changed my entire life.” She’s been studying the stars ever since. Nowadays Lee has a legion of devotees and is much sought-after for private readings, and her “Horoscopes” weekly column is a favorite of readers. “The thing is, astrology is a map of who you are. I learned I was the person I thought I was as opposed to the person my parents thought I was.” After her reading Lee became fascinated and delved into astrology. “I started the journey. I thought if I can help just one person it will be worth it.” Lee grew up in Elmont. “I was very spiritual. There was a Catholic church in my backyard. I realized there was something spiritual beyond that church so I began studying other

religions.” Lee’s latest project is working with people to create their “art work,” based on the Native American tradition. It’s kind of like a Totem Pole, usually five to seven paintings of ‘power-animals’ that have been important in their lives. The visuals remind us of the energies in the animals.” Lee has also appears at clubs and restaurants doing readings for patrons – her latest gig was at Legends. “It can be a lot of fun.
People love it and I love doing it. It’s amazing to sit across from people. It’s very organic.” Lee said at the beginning she was skeptical of horoscope columns in newspapers. “I pooh-poohed them, thinking they were too general. I live in Flanders, the gateway to the East End, so my column is very specific to the people who live out here, so it is relevant.” More than a few regular readers have marveled at Lee’s accuracy. “It’s like she’s writing just about me,”

Describe your own personal style: I prefer a classic yet sporty and relaxed style. I appreciate classic things that have a twist and also luxury staples. I tend to buy pieces that are interesting or luxurious and comfortable, in part because it suits my personality but also the transition in daily events can lead anywhere. Ultimately I appreciate carefully put together but practical clothing that feels effortless. Describe what you would wear as a go-to Hamptons beach outfit: I usually wear simple Eres triangle

bikinis. I usually wear a mans button down shirt as a cover up and some kind of hat to block the sun. I always wear a long gold necklace with lots of sentimental charms.
Would you say that Palm Beach and the Hamptons have a similar style? Palm Beach and the Hamptons have more in common than not. There is a significant population of both Floridians and New Yorkers that move between these towns and feels comfortable in both. I think this is in part due to the fact it’s a very active crowd who enjoys participating in everything with enthusiasm – both day and night. I also think there is a shared sense of style, which has certainly evolved among generations to a more casual attire but still manages to reflect its more formal roots. I also think this is apparent

in everyone’s outlook, which also tends to be more relaxed. Although I suspect Floridians might have a slight edge over New Yorkers for this.
How has your grandmother influenced your designs and your own personal style? She unequivocally influenced my work. She initially helped me with all of my designs, prints and colors. I grew up in the 80’s when Lilly was a ubiquitous brand among the faithful, with outrageous parties, outrageous personalities and, adorned in Lilly, outrageous wardrobes. It was her unique approach and gregarious personality that influenced my own style. While the style of Strong Boalt is more attuned to our time, I will continuously hear her voice stressing fun over everything else. Who would you most like to

wear one of your designs? It would be great to see my line on hot topics Ryan Gosling or Bradley Cooper, but ultimately I wouldn’t mind seeing Will Farrell wearing my trunks this summer. Describe your perfect summer day? In early summer the town of Palm Beach gets very quiet and we work on fulfilling summer orders and creating new prints for the upcoming season. The air is usually hot and the sea calm, and a brief trip on a small boat to Memory Rock in the Bahamas to spear Hog Snapper is a remarkably cathartic way to spend the day and conceptualize new prints. To consider ideas initiated by this stunning environment is complemented by evenings of open fires on beaches cooking the fresh catch under skies overwhelmed by stars. Favorite outdoor activities? Fishing, diving, spear fishing, paddle boarding, tennis, golf, biking, shooting... Who are some of your favorite designers? After working at Ralph [Lauren] for a few years, he will always be one of my favorites. I love prints, so Pucci is one of my absolute favorites. And of course the original vintage Lillys are always inspiring. Any favorite places to go when you are in the Hamptons? The walking dunes in Montauk, Round Swamp Farm, Sam’s Pizza in East Hampton, Stephen Talkhouse in Amagansett. Where can we find Strong Boalt in The Hamptons? Scoop in NYC and East Hampton and Michelle Farmer in Bridgehampton.

Tomorrow There Will Be Apricots Tomorrow There Will Be Apricots is the debut novel from young author Jessica Soffer. Apricots is about two women adrift in New York: Victoria is an Iraqi Jewish widow, and Lorca is the latchkey daughter of a cold, judgmental mother. Their lives come together through cooking lessons Victoria teaches in her home, as together they forge a new kind of family. It’s a true foodie book filled with Iraqi Jewish cooking. Jessica grew up with the cooking of Iraq: her father came to the US in 1948 and, as she tells it, “his only cultural carryover was his food, as he had to give up his identity (national, religious, and otherwise).” Jessica grew up going to Amagansett with her parents every year. She wrote the majority of Apricots at the East Hampton Library, where she has a particular table she sits at every day. She will be speaking at BookHampton (North Fork) on June 8 and BookHampton (East Hampton) July 21.
where she’d been cooking for days and days. The air was always thick with Arabic perfume and the orangey smells of cumin, paprika, cinnamon. Auntie would make heaps of desserts, stacking them high on a platter and as the cooking continued, and the day went on, people noshed: a nut and honey turnover here, a date and almond ball there. One day I caught Violette’s husband, my Uncle Jack, unearthing a shoe-box from below the kitchen table. He stuffed a different kind of dessert into his mouth. He grinned at me guiltily when I caught him. In the years that followed, he never said anything about the missing shakrlama from his stash, which I thoroughly enjoyed and which was smart because I never ratted him out. I’ve since discovered that Auntie dunked the cookies into her afternoon tea, but felt them too humdrum to include in her holiday bounty. Or so she says.
Here Jessica shares a recipe for Shakrlama: My father’s sister, Auntie Violette, is the best cook I know. For Passover we would go to her house on Long Island
Ingredients: ½ cup of butter ½ cup confectioners’ sugar 1 cup and 1 teaspoon sifted flour ¼ teaspoon ground cardamom
SHAKRLAMA
1 teaspoon rosewater ¼ teaspoon vanilla extract A pinch of salt Handful of pistachio halves or almonds for decoration
Directions: Preheat oven to 350F. Combine butter, sugar, flour, cardamom, rosewater, vanilla and salt. Knead well. Form into cakes about 2 inches in diameter. Space them one inch
apart on baking sheet covered with parchment paper. Decorate with nuts. Refrigerate for 15 minutes. Make for 8-10 minutes, or until cookies are a pale golden brown but cooked through. Read about shakrlama in “Tomorrow There Will Be Apricots.” Lorca wants to make something for her mother, who has come down with a cold. Victoria hits upon shakrlama, and they bake the cookies together.

Spa Water Anyone?
www.indyeastend.com
May 22, 2013 B-31
By Laura Anne Pelliccio May is National Strawberry Month. This means strawberry festivals, strawberry patch picking parties, strawberry crepes, strawberry smoothies … strawberry everything! One thing we we can focus on is combining strawberries and other refreshing fruits while hydrating our bodies. Water can be boring to drink alone but I discovered, My Spa Water, which offers more fun solutions to keeping our bodies nourished while eliminating toxins. The book, My Spa Water, written by Author and Founder, Pam Wenzel, has the most beautiful and artistically designed healthy Spa Water recipes. Here is the recipe for “Sweet Pineapple Strawberry Spa Water.”
Sweet Pineapple Strawberry Spa Water
Pineapple is a fruit that represents good for tune and hospitality. For centuries, people would present this sweet fruit to family and friends as a lovely gift. Today, we enjoy this delectable treat in desserts, dishes and drinks. Rich in a variety of vitamins and minerals, it has been known to strengthen the immune system and decrease the severity of colds and infections. Pineapple also contains an enzyme that enhances digestion and destroys harmful bacteria in the stomach and intestines. Strawberries complement the flavor of pineapple, and when blended together, they create such a beautiful pink hue. This berry is a super food and is known to lower the risk of cancer, plus provides many other health benefits.
