God's Love We Deliver

speakeasy moderne
By Isa Goldberg
East Hampton Studio presented SPEAKEASY MODERNE, New York City's sexiest 1930's cabaret party, on Friday. Guests traveled back in time with flappers, singers, and dancers. The show included performances by "Real Housewives of New York" Sonja Morgan, jazz artist Linda Calise, and more.
Villa Maria – a classic American mansion in the style of The Breakers, its waterfront vistas, sweeping lawns and beautiful stone work - made for a spectacular setting for Midsummer Night’s Drinks, God’s Love We Deliver’s 13th annual benefit. Opulent and otherworldly, the scene Saturday evening evoked the decadence of The Great Gatsby, but it was actually philanthropy that created the evening’s rollicking spirit. Hosted by Vince and Louise Canuto, the evening celebrated the work of God’s Love We Deliver, which served over 1.2 million meals to the ill and needy last year, and raised support for the organization’s initiative to expand its efforts nearly two fold.

Get Wild! With The Evelyn Alexander Wildlife Rescue Center By Jessica Mackin On Saturday evening NBC news anchor Chuck Scarborough and his wife Ellen will host “Get Wild!” a benefit for the Evelyn Alexander Wildlife Rescue Center of the Hamptons, at their home on Lake Agawam in Southampton. The fête will honor Sharon Kerr, Howard Lorber, and Kim Renk Dryer for their work with the rescue center. Kerr makes it a priority to spread awareness about the community's responsibility to the magnificent wildlife on the East End. She first became introduced to the center when she called about a deer entangled in some type of wire. The rescue center showed up immediately to help the deer out of its stressful situation. Kerr has also served as co-chairman for the 2012 Wildlife Conservation Gala at the Central Park Zoo. Dryer, the co-owner of Sequin Jewelry with her sister Linda Renk, is a huge animal lover. Dryer started her own rabbit rescue sanctuary in Rhode Island. Her New York City showroom is also a home for rescued bunnies and kittens that live together in a peaceful, safe environment. Lorber, the President and CEO of the holding company Vector Group Ltd, was introduced to the center
by his friend Leslie Alexander. He is being honored for his generous contributions to the center and is receiving this recognition for his continued support. The rescue center ser ves to preserve and protect the region’s native wildlife by providing rehabilitation services and education to raise public awareness of the factors that threaten its abundance and diversity. It is a grass roots organization that has grown from a few concerned friends to a group of over 1000 members and supporters. The center is a full-time professional wildlife hospital staffed by licensed rehabilitates, biologists, animal behaviorists and volunteers. The Wildlife Rescue Center receives over 10,000 calls each year for information or assistance with wild animal encounters. The center also provides educational programs to local elementary and secondary schools. Students from local colleges participate in cooperative education programs and internships. The event will also be a part of the “Swedish Culinary Summer,” as it will introduce Swedish Chef Jonas Dahlbom who will work with local Chef Peter Ambrose to create vegetarian menus for the evening.
There will also be two trips to Sweden auctioned, one an adventure themed package and the other culturally themed. There is also a “Swedish Experience Package” which will be loaded with all types of Swedish products such as knives, cheese, and items from The Lexington Clothing Co.
The event takes place Saturday from 6 to 8 PM. Tickets begin at $300. For tickets contact Linda B. Shapiro at 631-725-2023 or call the Evelyn Alexander Wildlife Rescue Center of the Hamptons at 631728-WILD. For more info visit www. wildliferescuecenter.org.

In November 2002, Turner finally sought treatment for her well-known fondness for alcohol, and she has been working regularly ever since, including a stint on “Californication.” Turner once famously uttered, “I can walk into a room, and if a man doesn’t look at me, he is probably gay.” AQUARIUS (Jan. 20 - Feb. 19) The reason to do anything is because you are moved to do so. Being moved is a good enough reason to do anything. We often have a great idea and then spend time figuring out all the reason NOT to do it. Stay in your passion and just do it! PISCES (Feb. 19 - Mar. 20) Tune in to your body this week. Give special attention to cravings, even if you don’t understand them. Your body is trying to tell you things so listen and trust it.

Director Marc Forster (Monsters Ball, The Kite Runner) takes some chances, and the screenplay strays considerably from the book’s storyline. He interacts with a lot of really mean people who do really nasty things, so he has to beat and kill them. Director Ric Roman Waugh has taken this film to a level beyond what viewers expect, and the result is an exciting ride.

It features a formidable cast including Kevin Costner, Michael Shannon, Russell Crowe and Amy Adams as a bewitching Lois Lane. With its spectacular special effects and absorbing dialogue, this film is destined to become a megablockbuster. Enjoy Hollywood at its big ticket best. THE INDEPENDENT’S
By Jessica Mackin The “Swedish Culinary Summer” is bringing talented chefs from Sweden to the Hamptons this season to participate in a variety of charity functions. A lineup of top Swedish chefs, food, beverages and consumer goods will be displayed. Participating in 20 events, SCS is using the Hamptons as a launching platform to create a buzz about the country and its culinary scene. Fifteen renowned, award-winning Swedish chefs, some from Michelinstarred restaurants, are here to create a seduction and interest in the country and what it has to offer. The majority of the chefs are winners of the Swedish Chef of the Year Award, “Årets Kock.” “Food is the universal ambassador,” says Andrew Reice who is the co-founder and Hamptons project director of Swedish Culinary Summer. The SCS is “using a multifaceted approach to create interest in Sweden.” Originally from Greenwich Village in New York City, Reice says Sweden is “as close to utopia as you can get.” Swedish cuisine has grown over the past 20 years. Zagat recently placed Swedish restaurants in the number two and number three positions in the top 10 restaurants in the world. In October of 2012, the Swedish National Team swept the Culinary Olympics, in all major categories. In 2011, a Swedish chef won second place in Bocuse d’Or. In recognition of its world standing, Bocuse d’Or Europe will be held in Stockolm in 2014. The number of Michelin-starred restaurants has
increased and several Swedish chefs have opened restaurants outside the country. The lineup for this summers events is both ambitious and impressive. So far they have been involved in “Top Secret,” an event for the Long Island Merlot Alliance, the “Much Ado About Madoo” benefit for the Madoo Conservancy, and “Midsummer Night Drinks” benefit for GOD’s Love We Deliver. This summer you can find SCS chefs at many other Hamptons parties, like the “Get Wild! Summer Gala” for the Evelyn Alexander Wildlife Rescue Center on Saturday
at the home of Ellen and Chuck Scarborough, which will highlight Swedish Chef Jonas Dahlbom. On June 29, they will join the “Benefit For The Bays” to benefit Peconic Baykeeper and Waterkeeper Alliance, which will be held aboard a luxury yacht. On July 6, SCS joins Guild Hall’s “Season Spectacular” which features a performance by Broadway legend Audra McDonald. You can find them at the opening of “ArtHampton” which takes place on July 11. The “Chefs & Champagne” annual event to benefit the James Beard Foundation will be held on July 20 and honors Andrew Zimmern; SCS will be there. The “Hamptons Happening” Benefit for the Samuel Waxman Cancer Research Foundation is on the list for July 27, the event features the restaurants of Chef Todd English, along with additional renowned chefs including those of SCS. The “Great Chef’s Dinner” at the Hayground School to benefit the Jeff Salaway Scholarship Fund on July 28 will feature eight chefs from Sweden’s Junior National Culinary Olympics team. “Authors Night” at East Hampton Library on August 10 will feature delicacies by Chef Tommy

Myllymäki, 2011 Bocuse d’Or silver medalist. Find them at the RxArt’s Party 2013 on August 11. RxArt transforms pediatric hospital facilities into comforting and engaging spaces through contemporary art. The "Pink Apron Party" Celebrity Chef Event on August 17 for the Ellen Hermanson Foundation features all female chefs, including Emelie Johansson, Sweden’s Regional Cook-off Youth winner. Last but not least, SCS will be at Harvest East End to benefit East End Hospice on August 24. Part of the Swedish lifestyle means not using bragging rights, which is probably why you may not have heard as much as you should have about the spectacular culinary scene. Swedes are “brought up being extremely humble,” said participating Chef Karl Ljung, who won the Swedish Chef of the Year award in 1999 and was responsible for the Nobel Dinner for four years. He is the CEO of Stureplansgruppen Restaurant Group with 19 venues in Stockholm. SCS is also donating an array of auction items to these events. Many travel packages will be auctioned off. These packages include adventure activities, dinners, cultural activities, and are always for two couples. There will also be Swedish products auctioned such as knives, cheese, and items from The Lexington Clothing Co. F o r m o r e i n f o v i s i t w w w. swedishculinarysummer.com.

Scallop With Pomelo Purée, Baby Radish And Carrot Salad Ingredients (serves 4) 12 large sea scallops 2 grapefruit 1 lime 1 orange 8 baby carrots
27 front st., greenport, ny 11944 www.thefriskyoyster.com 631.477.4265
10 baby radishes 10 mint leaves ( chiffonade) 1 c sugar 1 c olive oil Sea salt and fresh cracked pepper
Method Start by peeling the skin from the two grapefruit, and half the orange being careful to remove all of the white pith. Juice and zest all the fruit. Make the simple syrup by heating one cup of water with one cup of sugar over medium heat stirring often. When the sugar is melted into the water, take off the heat and set aside for later. Once these steps are complete, begin your purée by filling a small sauce pot with cold water and the peelings from the two grapefruit and the half orange. Bring the water to a boil then bail the water from the pot and repeat this process five times.

to cool. Wash the scallops with cold water and remove the muscle on the side. Slice them into quarter inch thick coins. Assemble your dish by making a quick dressing with the other half cup of olive oil, the lime juice, the mint, and one tsp of the simple syrup used to cook the citrus peels from the purée. Mix the shaved carrots and radish in two tbsp of this dressing. Spread the purée artfully on the plate. Shingle the scallop coins in a line through the purée. Place the carrot and radish salad around the plate. Finish with sea salt and cracked pepper and garnish with some of the dressed vegetable tops.
While you wait for the water to boil each time, wash the carrots and radish. Take off the leafy top and set aside. Carefully start to slice the vegetables paper thin on your mandolin. At this point you have brought the peels to a boil starting in cold water five times. Finish cooking the peels in the simple syrup over medium low heat until the peels appear translucent. This will take 30 to 45 minutes. Remove the peels from the simple syrup and place in a blender with half the grapefruit juice and all the orange juice and blend on high. When the purée begins to become smooth, finish by drizzling in a half cup of olive oil. Place the warm purée in the fridge
