HAIL TO THE CHEF. “The new menu at East Hampton Point is wonderful. Loved the striped bass and the fettucini with shrimp was out-of-this-world. That new chef is really good.” – Donald P. “I was crazy about the lamb meatballs and the crispy calamari was just perfect. The service was first rate too. Our waitress was so friendly and had great suggestions. – Evelyn G. “We went to a gorgeous wedding last week. So beautiful and the food was sensational. What a terrific new chef they’ve got. – Roger & Ann W. “We were spending the weekend at one of the luxurious suites at the East Hampton Point Hotel and were we surprised how fantastic the new chef ’s food is in the restaurant! Bouillabaisse in a saffron broth better than anything in Paris and my girlfriend said it was the best strip steak ever. We’re coming back! – Robert C. “I’m keeping my boat at the Point Marina this summer, service has been excellent but the restaurant really blew my mind. I always heard the place was great-looking (and it was!) but the food was a big surprise! That menu had something delicious for everyone. The Day Boat Halibut was my favorite! – Len S. “The sunset and the views were so romantic and that James Carpenter is some fantastic chef! Is he married??? – Angela W. A single female foodie

The Mystery Of Irma Vep Bay Street Theatre presents The Mystery Of Irma Vep, written by Charles Ludlam and directed by Kenneth Elliott, as the second production in its 2013 summer Mainstage season. The Mystery Of Irma Vep stars Tom Aulino and five time Obie Award winning actor David Greenspan. Irma Vep is an extremely funny comedy. “We are incredibly happy to have both Tom and David as a two man cast playing eight different characters with over 35 different costume changes,” says Gary Hygom, Producer for Bay Street Theatre. “Under Elliott’s direction, Vep will have audiences crying with laughter.” This is not an understatement. The cast brings to life this hilarious story. The Mystery Of Irma Vep is a satire of several theatrical and film genres, including Victorian melodrama, farce and the Alfred Hitchcock film Rebecca (1940). The play is written for two actors who, between them, play eight characters of both sexes. It is Kenneth Elliott's second time directing at Bay Street Theatre. He is delighted to return to the Bay Street Theatre where he directed Home Fires, which was later retitled Swingtime Canteen for its off-Broadway transfer. The Mystery Of Irma Vep was first produced by Ludlam's Ridiculous Theatrical Company, opening offoff-Broadway in New York City's Greenwich Village in September 1984 and closing in April 1986. It starred Ludlam as Lady Enid, the new mistress of the manor, and a butler, and Everett Quinton as Lord Edgar Hillcrest, the master of the manor, and the housekeeper (among other characters). The "Cast and Crew" won a Special Drama Desk Award. Ludlam and Quinton won the 1985 Obie Award for Ensemble Performance. The show was later produced offBroadway at the Westside Theatre from September 1998 through July 1999, with Quinton and Stephen DeRosa. The production won the 1999 Lucille Lortel Award for Outstanding Revival, along with Outer Critics Circle Award nominations for Outstanding Revival of a Play, Outstanding Lighting Design (John Lee Beatty), and Outstanding Costume Design (William Ivey Long). In 1991, The Mystery Of Irma Vep was the most produced play in the United States, and in 2003, it became the longest-running play ever produced in Brazil. The Mystery Of Irma Vep runs through July 28 and tickets are $59.50 and $69.50. For more information call the Box Office at 631725-9500 or at www.baystreet.org.

Fruitvale Station * (R) The darling of the 2013 Sundance Film Festival, Ryan Coogler’s film about a real-life young black man who is gunned down by police on New Year’s Eve in Oakland is a tear-jerker to be sure. There is some debate about how much of the story is factual, but it is a powerful film on its own merits. Michael B. Jordan gives a stunning performance playing the deceased, Oscar Grant. Octavia Spencer leads a strong supporting cast. It’s an Oscar contender to be sure.
Big Star: Nothing Can Hurt Me (NR) Back when the Beatles and Beach Boys ruled the airwaves this band was churning out wildly inventive pop rock at an amazing clip. No one listened – then. Now, some critics think Big Star belongs atop the list of the greatest bands that never were. Lead singer and songwriter Alex Chilton – he was the voice of the Box Tops (Remember, “The Letter”) has achieved, after his death, rock royalty status. This documentary, by Drew DeNicola and Oliva Mori, is a good starting point – but buy the albums, especially the 1971 classic Number 1 Record.

New On DVD The Call A 9-11 operator takes a call from a terrified teenaged girl and leaps into action. This is a starring vehicle for Halle Berry, and nothing more. Predictably, it bombed in theaters.
Now Playing The Lone Ranger (PG-13) coming to the big screen just in time for the big July Fourth weekend, this film is bound to be a box office smash because its star, Johnny Depp, is box office gold. But wait, kemo sabe: Depp apparently wanted to be the star but not play the title character: instead, it will be Tonto (Depp) and his faithful sidekick (Armie Hammer). Helena Bonham Carter, Tom Wilkinson, and Ruth Wilson co-star, Jerry Bruckheimer produces, and Gore Vebinski directs. Yes, it has Pirates Of The Caribbean all over it. Still, Depp has infused a mystical element into the friendship, and the adventures are spiced with humor and surprises. I’m So Excited (R) Pedro Almodóvar’s off-kilter, oddball comedy/drama about an airborne passenger plane with severe technical problems isn’t for everyone, but the great filmmaker’s genius is surely at work here – somewhere. Try it. A Hijacking (R) * Director Tobias Lindholm has fashioned a harrowing
July 10, 2013 B-11
tale about a cargo ship kidnapped and held for ransom by Somalian pirates. The drama is inherent: the tension evolves naturally as the company CEO haggles about money with the fate of his crew at stake. It’s a good one. Monsters University Wherein we learn how Mike Wazowski and James P. Sullivan became such good buds. Unfortunately, the prequel from Pixar isn’t nearly as good as the original. Billy Crystal is back as the voice of Mike, with John Goodman doing Sully. World War Z Brad Pitt stars as a UN employee tracking a deadly pandemic. Director Marc Forster (Monster’s Ball) takes some chances, and the screenplay strays considerably from the book’s storyline. Still, when you have a zillion dollar budget, you’re going to come up with some interesting special effects, and the sets are magnificent. Typical summer blockbuster fare. Man Of Steel (PG-13) Remember Superman? He’s baaaaa-ack. This time around Henry Cavill plays the title role, but he is really (spoiler alert!) Clark Kent/Superman. It features a formidable cast including Kevin Costner, Michael Shannon, Russell Crowe, and Amy Adams as a bewitching Lois Lane. With its spectacular special effects and absorbing dialogue, this film is destined to become a mega-blockbuster. Enjoy Hollywood at its big ticket best.

There are those around you who may not know you need anything from them. Ask. You may be surprised by who shows up. Your mantra needs to be ‘I am open to receive all that is good.’ Then trust what and who show up. GEMINI (May 21 - June 22) Choose the things that ring all your bells. The marriage fell apart two years later, and her sheer beauty inspired talent scouts and admirers to recruit her for modeling jobs. A devout Catholic, Vergara at first resisted a known photographer who wanted to take somewhat risqué shots of her, until her schoolteachers encouraged her to seize the opportunity. Star Island Grill
By Kitty Merrill The white ceiling fans whir as diners gaze out open windows, across the blue waters of a sparkling pool and through the swaying (potted) palm trees to a view of sunset over the harbor. Lovely and low-key, the ambiance at the Star Island Grill, located at Star Island Yacht Club in Montauk, is decidedly casual resort. Unlike the array of flash in the pan clubs and eateries that have made their home, if temporarily, in the Lighthouse District, SIG is marked by a distinct absence of pretension – there wasn’t a fedora in sight when we arrived for dinner Wednesday night and were greeted by manager Patty Collins Sales. With a quick wit and even quicker smile, she made us feel right at home immediately and set to mixing up our drinks. It was post-pre-holiday rush, so Patty (we'll call her Foody Patty to avoid confusion), Kim, Romaine, Joanna and I were primed for relaxation. Foody Patty and Kim ordered beers, amused by the kitchzy aluminum bottles they were served in. I had been craving a mudslide for days and Sales makes the best. Joanna tried the MTeaK, a mixture of sweet tea vodka and lemonade, and Romaine went for Patty’s Pirate Punch, a thirst quenching concoction of fruit juice and rum – Hawaiian Punch for adults. In keeping with the marina theme,
our table was adorned with a nautical map. Self-serve condiments and utensils were arranged in a wire basket any Pinterest follower would share. A big roll of paper towels was there for family-style dispensing. Dishes are served in quaint paper baskets lined with redcheckered napkins, but make no mistake -- what Chef Tony Sales fills them with is anything but standard snack bar fare. We ordered a variety of starters – crispy corn fritters with a sweet and salty dipping sauce, barbecue sliders with house-smoked pulled pork, pickles and slaw on potato buns that Foody Patty deemed “perfectly sauced,” “Bang Bang Squid” that was tender on the inside and crunchy on the outside, with a sweet chili dip I want Tony to bottle and sell, and the pièce de résistance – lobster salad sliders. Plump lobster meat, and lots of it, is tossed with a delicate sauce and served on the potato rolls. That menu selection is a meal in itself, if you’re not bent on chowing down. But we were, so it was on to the entrees. We tried the Molly salad, an oyster po’boy (a special that night), shrimp tacos, calamari salad, fried chicken, and ribs. The fried chicken already has a reputation among savvy visitors. It

definitely lived up to its legendary status. Kim explained: it’s crispy and moist without a hint of grease. The fat fried oysters on Joanna’s Po’Boy could claim the same. Sweet potato fries were cooked to perfection --crunchy and moist, as was the calamari tossed with fresh baby arugula and sesame-soy-ginger dressing. Tony’s grilled Cajun-spiced shrimp were topped with Tijuana slaw, cilantro and chipotle sauce, then wrapped – Baja style – in soft flour tortillas. And the Molly salad, named for the second generation Sales on staff – was a perfect mix of shrimp, goat cheese, dried cranberries and toasted pecans tossed with garden greens and raspberry vinaigrette. The shrimp still popped when I bit into them the next day while scarfing the contents of my doggie bag. With one taste, Foody Patty called
dibs on the ribs, praised as smoky and tender. “If this was my dying meal, I’d be fine with that,” she joked, proclaiming them “the best ribs I’ve ever had.” Off season, Sales is a baker whose desserts can bring tears to your eyes. So, with discerning tastebuds, she chose to offer cupcakes by the popular Junior’s brand on the dessert menu. We sampled, okay, more than sampled, four kinds – confetti, red velvet, peanut butter and chocolate, and chocolate ganache. The platter looked like a war zone when we were finished. Star Island Grill is open seven days a week for breakfast, lunch and dinner. They have live music at sunset on Thursdays and we’re headed back there for poolside lunch and karaoke on Saturday.
