Susan Lucci To Host Bay Street’s “Rock The Dock” By Jessica Mackins The Bay Street Theatre’s annual “Rock The Dock” benefit bash is happening on Saturday evening on the Long Wharf in Sag Harbor. This year the gala will be hosted by the most famous face in daytime television history, Susan Lucci. Indy had a chance to speak with Lucci about her involvement with Bay Street Theatre as well as “Devious Maids,” the new show she stars in on Lifetime. When asked how Lucci became involved with Bay Street Theatre, she replied, “It was Mary Ellen Diprisco (Special Events Producer at Bay Street). We used to work together at ABC for a long time. The last time we worked together was in Hawaii. I was so happy to hear from her.” Lucci continued, “I love Bay Street Theatre, so when she asked me to be a part of it, I was very happy to do it.” Lucci is no stranger to the Hamptons and has love for Bay Street and Sag Harbor. “We have a house in Quogue. We try to go to Bay Street every summer. I just love it there. I’ve gone to many performances at Bay Street. We love Sag Harbor, love the American Hotel, love it all.” Her role on the “Devious Maids,”
created by Marc Cherry, who also created the hit series, "Desperate Housewives," has received critical acclaim. “It’s about five Latino maids in Beverly Hills households. I play Genevieve Delatour. I’m the head of one of those households and two of the maids work in my house,” says Lucci. “Devious Maids” can be seen on Lifetime on Sundays at 10 PM. “Rock The Dock” will take place on Saturday starting at 6 PM. Alongside Lucci, Actor and Bay Street board member, Richard Kind, who most recently won the Drama Desk Award for his role on Broadway’s The Big Knife, will be the evening’s celebrity auctioneer. Karen Ziemba will be performing at the gala. Board member Joy Behar also plans on attending, with a host of other surprise celebrities. The gala is being held in honor and memory of the Theatre’s founder and former Artistic Director, Sybil Christopher. Tickets are available online at www. baystreet.org or by calling Jessica Lemire at 631-725-0818 ext. 129. Jessica@indyeastend.com

Bombastic Bull Moose Party By Kitty Merrill They were playing at a bar in Coram when an audience member requested “Can’t You See?” It wasn’t part of their set list. They’d never practiced it. But one guy knew the words and he pulled out a flute and they killed the Marshall Tucker Band’s hit. Last Thursday night at Swallow East in Montauk, another request. A fan asked for Dylan’s “Wagon Wheel” … and the members of Bull Moose Party obliged, rocking it as a couple two-stepped on the deck under the twilight sky. Six pieces comprise the Party – Rich Bente on bass, Brett Desing on lead guitar, lead singer Steve Mall (also on guitar and mandolin) Michael Costello on rhythm guitar and aforementioned flute, Doug Leax on keyboards and Brian Gabriel on drums. The band’s moniker, said Desing, was inspired by Teddy Roosevelt and his progressive party, “but the name took on a meaning of its own, being we are bombastic kind of guys.” A group of friends based in Patchogue – one of Long Island’s emerging music epicenters – Bull Moose Party played together, at first, just for fun. After five years of fun, “It evolved into something we thought we should take to the masses,” Desing explained. The Party’s sound is unique – each member sings and their harmonies are heaven, especially when combined with devilishly delicious expertise on an array of instruments. “Every musician in our group comes from different influences ranging from heavy metal to classical, to the Grateful Dead, the whole gamut,” Desing said. “The style we most like to play together, some would call it ‘roots American rock.’” They’ve been likened to Little Feat, which boasts an eclectic blend of influences, from rock to blues to R&B, funk, country, and jazz, and have created a sound unique to them – a little Southern Rock-ish, with some Led Zeppelin on the set list.

“Some of our songs have a country twist,” said Design. “You could call it foot stompin.” That makes Bull Moose Party a pretty good fit for tomorrow night’s “Daisy Dukes and Cowboy Boots” party at Swallow East in Montauk. But don’t be surprised if they throw a little Black Sabbath into the mix along with the honky tonk tunage. Bull Moose Par ty plays at Swallow every Thursday night from 7:30 to 10:30 PM. In addition to entertainment by the band, tomorrow night’s hoe down promises a mechanical bull and pig roast. kmerrill@indyeastend.com

David Brenner Coming To Bay Street
By Rick Murphy
The most amazing thing about David Brenner’s career is that he didn’t labor for years in dimly lit basement comedy clubs before he made it to the big time. “I didn’t even want to be a comedian,” he related. “I was just biding my time trying to figure out what I wanted to do with my life.” It wasn’t easy being a comedian four decades ago. “At the time folk singing was big . . .the clubs featured singers. There would be maybe nine acts on the bill and one would be a comedian. They would say, ‘go up and do five minutes.’” Almost six years passed between the days of Robert Klein and David Steinberg in the late sixties and next wave of great comedians – Brenner among them. Many of his contemporaries are now legendary: Steve Landesberg [later of “The Barney Miller Show”] was one. “No one was funnier. He used to crack me up all the time,” Brenner said. There were Freddie Prinz, Jimmy Walker, Albert Brooks, and Steve Martin, to name a few. “We were all different,” Brenner said. “We all wrote our own stuff. We created our acts.” He said once
Jimmy Walker made it he “liked to hire writers.” Two of them were Jay Leno and David Letterman. Brenner grew up in a tough neighborhood in Philadelphia and was a gang member. He managed to get into Temple University, Bill Cosby’s alma mater. “When I heard he quit I told him, ‘You know people with college degrees make an average of $100,000 more during their lifetimes.’” Brenner made it to “The Tonight Show” with Johnny Carson in a year, and ended up coming back 157 more times – a record. “I was doing social commentary at the time – my background was in documentaries.” But when his agent landed him an audition with “The Tonight Show” Brenner boned up. “I understood what they were looking for. I wrote an act that was perfect for the show. I did the audition and they called right back. ‘Can you do the show tomorrow?’” Carson, famously reser ved, obviously liked Brenner – professionally. “I didn’t know him any better after 150 shows than I did after the first show. I knew he was bright, funny, and considerate but I didn’t know
the man. I did the job.” Brenner related that he always did his stand up act on Carson’s show, as opposed to being brought right on to the panel, to sit next to Johnny and other guests. “One night he asked me during a commercial if I ever wondered why? I said ‘of course.’ He told me he liked to just sit back, relax, and enjoy the show for the five or six minutes I was on.” Brenner is coming off yet another career high. His HBO special, “David Brenner: Back with a Vengeance,” performed live, was one of the highest-ranking shows of its kind. One of the casualties of being on top for so long is the old videos and TV clips. There is Brenner, with his bell-bottoms on. Brenner, with his flowery shirts. And then there were the gold chains. “First me, and then Sammy Davis Jr. took it to another level, and then Mr. T went over the top. I think he injured himself.” Brenner said he tried to wean himself from the look only to get letters from fans who wanted him to wear his chains again. He solved the problem, he said, “By only wearing turtlenecks for a year.” Brenner said that’s the nature
of the changing times. “We don’t realize what we wear now will look silly in 20 years." Brenner will be on stage live at The Bay Street Theatre Monday. He always sells out there, so be forewarned. Tickets can be reserved by calling 631-725-9500. Despite his affinity for Bay Street, Brenner said he has no intentions of moving to the Hamptons. “I like to live near poor people,” he said with a laugh.

Dealing With Idiots (NR) Jeff Garland has attracted an all-star cast for this often-improvised take on crazy Little League parents. It has some truly funny moments. Nia Vardalos, Fred Willard, Timothy Olyphant and Gina Gershon are among the funnier contributors. It’s got a fun feel to it – try it.
New To Theaters Still Mine (PG-13) * You’ve seen James Cromwell (Babe, The Green
July 17, 2013 B-17
Mile) in a million movies, but never like this. Cromwell moves to the front of the list for Best Actor Oscar nominations with this stunning tour de force performance. He plays Craig Morrison, who wants to build a more accessible house for his ailing wife only to get stymied by a sea of red tape. The wonderful Geneviève Bujold co-stars. Michael McGowan has crafted a brilliant film, easily one of the best of the year.
New On DVD 42 The story of Jackie Robinson, the first black man to play major league baseball, is a compelling one indeed. Unfortunately, this schlock-fest is so cliché-ridden that the drama gets lost amidst the overacting. Chadwick Boseman gets
the title role and Harrison Ford plays Branch Rickey, the General Manager of the Brooklyn Dodgers who makes the courageous decision to bring Robinson up to the big leagues. It bombed in theaters.
Now Playing Big Star: Nothing Can Hurt Me (NR) Back when the Beatles and Beach Boys ruled the airwaves this band was churning out wildly inventive pop rock at an amazing clip. No one listened – then. Now, some critics think Big Star belongs atop the list of the greatest bands that never were. Lead singer and songwriter Alex Chilton – he was the voice of the Box Tops (Remember, “The Letter”) has achieved, after his death, rock royalty status. This documentary, by Drew DeNicola and Oliva Mori, is a good starting point – but buy the albums, especially the 1971 classic Number 1 Record.

ARIES (Mar. 20 - Apr. 20) There is no stopping you this week. Not that you ever need the encouragement, but this week the energy is big! Enjoy yourself, take full advantage of all you want to do, and don’t be afraid to do things big. TAURUS (Apr. 20 - May 21) Maybe you can hang out with an Aries and allow yourself to show off a little. This can be a time for you to step outside the box and allow yourself to do things a bit more dramatically than usual. Don’t be afraid. GEMINI (May 21 - June 22) If the energy is not moving effortlessly forward, it’s probably best to take a step back. This is not a time to force things. Take your time and finish things from the past before stepping forward. CANCER (June 22 - July 23) It’s all about you. You should make it about you. Even if others don’t seem to want to make it about you, make yourself the priority. Take time for yourself and/or buy yourself something special. Spoil yourself a bit.
LEO (July 23 - Aug. 23) It is about love this week. Feel it around you, look for it in unusual places, or right outside your front door. Doing things big and grand is also a fine idea, why not just have some fun and go play a little bit? VIRGO (Aug. 23 - Sept. 23) Best to honor your intuition this week for it may be the greatest way to feel yourself through any situation. It is about the feelings and your intuition, not logic this week, so stay tuned in. LIBRA (Sept. 23 - Oct. 23) It may have been a while; you will most likely hit your stride this week and the coming weeks as well. Energy that has been jammed up or blocked finds its release point, so open yourself up and break free. SCORPIO (Oct. 23 - Nov. 22) Emotional structuring is what I would call this week for you, Scorpio. See if you can organize your feelings. I know that sounds odd, but you may be able to prioritize things in your life if you will give value to the emotional content and sort things that way. Hey, give it a try.

Today’s Birthday: Donald Sutherland, 1935

PO BOX 1181 92 CLAY PIT ROAD SAG HARBOR
The Canadian born actor is best known for his role as Hawkeye in the Mash movie, but Donald Sutherland has a 50-year resume dotted with outstanding work. Sutherland was a sickly child, but when he moved to Nova Scotia as a teenager he quickly found his bearings, landing work as a news correspondent at a small TV station and later graduating from Victoria College with a degree in drama. He landed jobs on a number of British TV shoes most notably “The Avengers” and “The Saint” with Roger Moore. He auditioned for The Dirty Dozen, landed the role, and became a star. In 1972 he starred in the Academy Award winning film Klute and began a relationship with its Oscar winning star, Jane Fonda. Don’t Look Now, a psychological thriller set in Venice with Julie Christe, is considered a cult classic. Sutherland starred in many iconic movies in the 1980s and 90s including A Dry, White Season with Marlon Brando, Six Degrees Of Separation, and JFK. In 1997 he worked alongside his son, Keifer, in A Time To Kill. Keifer went on to achieve international fame playing Jack Bauer on the TV hit “24” Donald most recently appeared in both Hunger Games films. He has been awarded an Emmy, two Golden Globes, has a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, and has received Canada’s highest honors for dramatic acting. He can also be very funny – check him out in Kelly’s Heroes opposite Don Rickles and Clint Eastwood.
SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22 - Dec. 21) Big energy this week, so knock yourself out and do everything you have been putting on hold. Do pay attention and avoid going overboard, but do give yourself permission to break out of any restrictions you’ve been putting on yourself. CAPRICORN (Dec. 21 - Jan. 20) Time for some emotional stability. Don’t be surprised if things that have seemed out of control in the past find a way to get in line and come together for you this week. Look for ways to make things more stable everything from your kitchen table to your relationships. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20 - Feb. 19) Watch what you say this week and positively no lying! This will not work for you - so say what you mean and mean what you say and don’t allow yourself to go off script.
PISCES (Feb. 19 - Mar. 20) A truly healing moment is at hand. Take advantage of the opportunities around you and move in to the healing. This could be an amazing week, so look for those moments of serendipity. NOTE: If you were born at the end or beginning of a sign, read the sign before or after your birthday. Sienna Restaurant & Ultralounge Independent/Jessica Mackin
By Jessica Mackin Following the success of Beaumarchais East Hampton last summer, restaurateur Jonathan Rapillo has returned to the same Three Mile Harbor space this summer with Sienna Restaurant & Ultralounge. The eatery melds two world-class experiences under one chic roof. The restaurant boasts an eclectic menu designed by Tony Fortuna of the popular Upper East Side restaurant T-Bar Steak & Lounge. The Pink Elephant presents nightlife at its best with a summer residency in Sienna’s Ultralounge. Sienna promises a luxurious dining experience that should not be skipped this summer. Chef Ben Zwicker, formerly of Mandarin Oriental, Four Seasons, Aureole and Petrossian, produces fresh and flavorful American Nouveau specialties at Sienna. The restaurant focuses on high-quality, local produce and ingredients. Previously of NYC hotspots such as
MPD and Bagatelle, Evan Finkelstein is at the reigns of the beverage program at Sienna. The program delivers high quality specialty cocktails and classics using house made syrups, fresh squeezed juices and seasonal ingredients. On Friday night, I dined at Sienna with my friend Peggy Stankevich. I started with a fantastic beet and pear salad with pecorino, while Peggy chose the watermellon and feta salad. We were very impressed with both of the salads. They were a wonderful start to our fantastic meal. For our entrees Peggy decided on the yellow-fin tuna tartar with soy ginger and sesame seeds. An excellent choice with fresh, grade-A ingredients. For my entree I tried the chicken milanese with chopped salad and lemon, which was cooked to perfection and the accompanying salad was also delightful. Dessert was unbelievably spectacular. We split a banana parfait mille feuilles with coconut
and carmel sauce. Other menu items include T-Bar’s Signature chopped salads, crispy Long Island duck, sauteed Mar yland lump crabcake with tomato remoulade, and a 14 oz New York strip with mashed potatoes and Béarnaise sauce. Sienna also offers a weekend brunch, with festive brunch parties on holiday weekends and a more serene experience throughout the rest of the summer to accommodate leisurely dining and celebratory gatherings alike.
Dinner is served Wednesday through Sunday. Brunch is served on Saturdays. Sienna will present the Sienna Brunch Party on Saturday, August 31 and Sunday, September 1. The Pink Elephant is open Friday and Saturday nights until Labor Day and Sunday September 1. For more info and reservations visit www.siennahamptons.com.
