The Legendary Murphys (No. Not That Murphy) The Legendary Murphys play at a slew of sites across Long Island and the Metropolitan area, taking their energy from the audience and passing it right back to craft a mutually enjoyable dynamic that transcends age groups.
This week they’ll be taking that dynamic east to Gurney’s Inn in Montauk for the Tuesday night beach party. Showtime is 6PM. The music, and the sunset over the Atlantic, are both free. kmerrill@indyeastend.com

The Legendary Murphys will rock the beach party at Gurney’s Tuesday. The fun in the sun starts at 6 PM. By Kitty Merrill
About four years ago, fans who’d seen them play at Cedar Beach upisland asked them to play their wedding at Gurney’s inn in Montauk. As happens when the classic rock band takes the stage, four generations of wedding attendants – from toddlers to grandparents were moved to dance. “Management came in and saw so many people having so much fun and they booked us,” bassist Mike Gormley recalled. They performed regularly in Montauk as the Legendary Hooligans, and are back this summer with a new name, The Legendary Murphys (no relation to Indy’s Editor Murphy). The group is anchored by award winning singer songwriters -- Tom Murphy (lead vocals, guitar, harmonica) and Sandy (Fredrickson) Murphy (vocals and keyboard) – he has written songs for the HBO hit “True Blood” and BET’s Mo’Nique, while she’s got multiplatinum song writing creds. Gormley on bass, Johnny O on drums and Ethan Bartlett on guitar and vocals round out the
ensemble. Challenged to pick just two words to summarize the Legendary Murphy’s vibe, Gormley said, “infectious fun . . . Playing is a labor of love for the band and people pick up on how much fun we’re having.” Members, all of whom live on Long Island, have played together some 10 years now. Their set lists pay homage to such rock icons as Van Morrison, the Eagles, Neil Young, Creedence, ZZ Top, Led Zeppelin, the Stones, and the Beatles. But it won’t be the ubiquitous hits you hear when you come out to a Murphys performance. “What we try to do,” said Gormley, “is take a few things out of left field and pick songs that are a little more obscure. People will say ‘Wow. I haven’t heard that one in a long time.’” Interested in keeping the audiences happy and coming back for more, Gormley often talks to younger people who attend performances, asking them what they’d like to hear. “And they say, ‘We like what you’re playing.’ . . . The classic music of our age, everybody can embrace it.”

Hara-Kiri: Death of a Samurai (NR) * Takashi Miike has created a remarkable film earmarked by his stunning camera work and gripping performances. On the surface it is the tale of a samurai who wants an honorable death by ritual suicide, but the plot runs far deeper, and branches out in many unforeseen directions. This film may not be screened on the East End, but New Yorkers should take note to look for it in the city.
New On DVD Wanderlust This one looked funny: It had the Judd Apatow (producer) pedigree, and perhaps the two
hottest comedic actors in the business, Paul Rudd and Jennifer Aniston, on the marquee. Even the plot sounds like it will yield a treasure-trove of laughs: a buttoned up couple from the city join a freewheeling commune were everything goes. But the dead pans can only take the actors so far, and when it comes time for the really funny lines – there ain’t enough.
Now Playing The Collaborator (NR) Martin Donovan wrote, directed, and stars in this film, billed as a comedy about a screenwriter on the skids. It’s not really funny, but critics seem to like it. On the other hand, audiences haven’t. Be forewarned. Co-starring David Morse, Olivia Williams, and Katherine Helmond. The Imposter * Critics are raving about this documentary about the 1994 disappearance of a 13 yearold in Texas. Director Bart Layton, in his first effort, deftly lays out a series of occurrences even Hollywood’s greatest scriptwriters would have trouble coming up with. And it’s all true. This film may not make it to the East End, but it is worth a trip to Manhattan if it doesn’t. The Amazing Spider Man (PG13) Again? Yep. This time with a new director (Marc Webb) and a new cast. But Andrew Garfield (The Social Network) as Peter brings some chops to the role. Unlike Tobey Maquire, a somewhat nerdy Spiderman whose overly innocent look seldom left his face, Garfield has a chip on his shoulder -- he’s something of a rebel, and Emma Stone (The Help) is perfect as Gwen. It’s slick summer fare to be sure, but it’s edgy enough to distinguish itself from the original. Martin Sheen, Dennis Leary and Sally Field anchor an excellent supporting cast. The Pact (NR) Nicholas McCarthy’s first film has a tired premise: Two sisters (played by Agnes Bruckner and Caity Lotz) return home after their mother dies and stay overnight in the house. When the lights go out . . . yes, you guessed it – creepy things happen. Yes, folks, ghosts. The twist is the sisters unveil some dark secrets about mumsy. It is what it is – summer product for the young crowd.

This ability to give and receive in equal measure is a sure sign of success. There is no vulnerability in giving all the time. True commitment means you can surrender enough to allow yourself to give and receive. GEMINI (May 21 - June 22) Your unconscious is trying to get your attention. The best way to use this week’s energy will be to surrender your ego and any need to control – sacrifice your ego’s need to know everything in advance and be right all the time, or any other form of control. Spend time meditating, or sitting and listening to what is going on inside. See what you can do to detach yourself from the outer world and touch your inner world, which will be far more rewarding right now. Surrender and sacrifice – they don’t have to be ‘bad’ things. They could be relaxing. CANCER (June 22 - July 23) Think of a swan gliding across a very still body of water. That is your mental image for the week. You have the opportunity to glide

If ever there were a poster child for the phrase “Wild Man” it was Hunter S. Thompson, the father of Gonzo Journalism. Thompson became famous when his scathing, “Fear and Loathing In Las Vegas” was serialized in Rolling Stone magazine in 1971. The following year his account of the presidential race, Fear and Loathing On the Campaign Trail not only became a best seller, but established its author as an alcoholic, drug taking, gun wielding lunatic whose literary persona was no more notorious than the real life version. Both Bill Murray and Johnny Depp immortalized Thompson on screen, and the author himself continued to make news, culminating in 2005 when he shot himself. Thompson grew up in Louisville, Kentucky, where he was a good athlete and a gifted writer. He had a penchant for getting into trouble, though, and he was in jail and missed his high school graduation. He made it through a stint in the Air Force with an honorable discharge – just barely. While in uniform he lied about his credentials and got a job writing for the base newspaper. After his discharge, Hunter worked for a number of publications, and ran for sheriff of Aspen in Colorado in 1970. Thompson headed the Freak Power Party ticket and the central plank of his platform was to legalize all drugs. He wrote about the race in Rolling Stone in 1970 and his long association with the magazine began (Hunter famously showed up at Jann Wenner’s office drunk, carrying a six pack.) In 1990 his house was raided after a porn star filed a complaint against him. Police found an assortment of drugs and dynamite at his compound. Eventually charges were dismissed, and Thompson later wrote an account of the raid entitled Kingdom of Fear. After Thompson killed himself Depp made sure his final wishes were carried out: Hunter’s ashes were fired out of a cannon placed above an 150-foot tower while “Spirit In The Sky” blared out. The patented Thompson insignia -- a double-thumbed fist clutching a peyote button -- was proudly displayed. of it as ‘change’ why not look at it as adapting to the circumstances at hand? ‘Adapt’ is your word for the week and you will need to put your flexible nature to the test. Resisting and getting rigid is a bad idea and, when in doubt, clean the kitchen. Attending to the details of daily life and your routine will help you adapt as necessary. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22 - Dec. 21) Beware your generous and impatient nature which may have you committing to something you don’t quite want to do just because you would rather do anything than sit still one moment longer! Not the best choice. Be a little patient and know that the energy is moving quickly and the ‘right’ choice will come to you and you will feel it to the tips of your toes if you will simply wait for it. CAPRICORN (Dec. 21 - Jan. 20) Great time to make some lists. It may not be the best time to try to check things off on the list, just collect the information. In a couple of weeks you will feel the energy shift and you will know it is time to act. Right now it is about feeling the inspiration and allowing your creativity to rise to the surface. If you have an unhampered opportunity to take action then go ahead, just don’t lose heart if you have to wait a bit. It is all worth the wait. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20 - Feb. 19) Ever notice in all those myths and great stories that some big thing that
has to be dealt with protects every treasure? Be it a dragon or some kind of mystical enchantment that has to be broken the hero or heroine always needs to fight some battle to get to the treasure. Think of yourself as the hero in your own story and realize that you are standing at the threshold – a moment away. The only catch is that you will have to deal with something. Or someone. You will have the strength – the second wind from the Universe to rise to the occasion. PISCES (Feb. 19 - Mar. 20) Wise choices made now will allow for healing of deeper wounds, failure to listen to your intuition may result in the perpetuating the wound part of things. Your imagination, your dreams, anything connected to meditation or the intuitive and spiritual world is highlighted and will help you to get back in touch with yourself and help you to feel your strength and your power. Men’s Lives At Bay Street

When Bay Street Theatre opened its doors in 1992 it was the inaugural production of Men's Lives that put the theatre on the map. Nearly 20 years later, it's back as the second production in the 2012 Mainstage Season. Men's Lives by Joe Pintauro is based on the book by Peter Matthiessen and directed by Harris Yulin. Mark Coffin, Rob Disario, Deborah Hedwall, Scott Thomas Hinson, Brian Hutchison, Peter McRobbie, Victor Slezak and Myles Stokowski make up the cast of this spectacular show. The performance tells the story of the lives of the East End Bay Men and their fight for survival. What unfolds is the tale of how the lives of these men change as the regulations over the East End waters became increasingly strict. Sag Harbor playwright Joe Pintauro emphasizes, “War was declared on the beaches of the East End when local Bay Men were forced to

launch a courageous fight against the crushing effect of history and economics on their lives in the Hamptons. Today the crisis is even worse.” Murphy Davis, Artistic Director of Bay Street Theatre states, “Not only does it have a timeless message about the human condition, it is more pertinent today than ever. Men's Lives tells the tale of a family’s struggle to maintain their way of life and fight for survival in these ever changing times. It is our way of honoring the Bay Men and their heritage, as well as the place where we all live. If you were here and saw our original production, come back . . . If you have never seen it, don’t miss it!” In the end, this timeless tale was met with a standing ovation and not a dry eye in the theatre. Men's Lives runs through July 29. Hilma Wolitzer is the award winning author of several novels, including Summer Reading, The Doctor’s Daughter, Hearts, Ending, and Tunnel of Love. She will read from and discuss her latest, An Available Man, at the Amagansett Library Saturday evening from 6 to 7 PM as part of its Authors After Hours series. The critic Adriani Trigiani called the book, “comic, tender, and delicious.” In this, her latest novel, Wolitzer explores the unpredictable fallout of suddenly becoming single later in life, and the chaos and joys of falling in love the second time around. With wit, warmth, and a keen understanding of the heart, An Available Man explores aspects of
loneliness and togetherness, and the difference in the options open to men and women of a certain age. Most of all, the novel celebrates the endurance of love, and its thrilling capacity to bloom anew. “Most of my books have a domestic basis. I’m beholden to Jane Austen for saying that it’s alright to write on a small domestic canvas,” she said in a recent interview. As a wife and mother, the author has a wealth of experience she draws on to create her fiction. “All the years that I’ve put in in the kitchen, the bedroom, in the household and with the kids and my husband have turned out to not only be wonderful personally, but useful in terms of my fiction,” she said. Wolitzer, who was born in Brooklyn, is no stranger to the East End – she has a house in Springs and splits her time between here and Manhattan. She is a recipient of Guggenheim and NEA fellowships, an Award in Literature from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, and the Barnes & Noble Writers for Writers Award. She has taught writing at the University of Iowa, New York University, and Columbia University. Her daughter is the writer Meg Wolitzer. Admission to this event is free. Ingredients (serves 6) 1/2 large seedless watermelon 1 English cucumber (finely diced) 2 limes (juiced) 1/2 papaya (fine diced) 1/2 honeydew melon (finely diced) 2 tbsp honey 4 plum tomatoes (finely diced) 1/4 c mango juice Method Begin by cutting away the rind from the watermelon. Cut the watermelon into manageable pieces and blend
on high until you reach a nice smooth consistency. Allow the watermelon liquid to sit for three minutes or so and skim off the white foam that rises to the top. Once you have done this you can whisk in the lime juice, mango juice, and honey. All that is left is to make the fine knife cuts on all of the fruits and vegetables and mix them into the base. Pour and enjoy a nice refreshing gazpacho perfect for a summer day. www.chefjoecipro.com
