Love, Energy And Passion: EVE

There are only a handful of performances of the Neo-Political Cowgirls production of EVE. Don’t miss the chance to see this edgy and provocative dance theatre immersion production. After a much acclaimed premier last summer, creater Kate Mueth returns with her immersive journey of a newly formed woman in a world already rife with experiences and history. As the audience moves freely through 13 roaming rooms, her story unfolds through music, movement and art -- minus the fourth wall -- inviting the audience into the various personal moments of her experiences. A “club theater” styled story, EVE is a powerful and mysterious piece drawing the onlooker in with each actor’s tale. Audience members were lavish in their praise of EVE this week. Said one couple, “that was one of the most freeing and emotional theatrical experiences that we’ve had in like forever! We teared up, choked up and could hardly breathe at the end - joy & exhilaration!!!” Offered another, “EVE . . . rocked me to the core . . . It has certainly stayed with me. You walk out at the end, not entirely sure what just happened, but you know it was something, possibly something very big. I knew EVE would be a crazy experience, I was told it would be, but I did not expect to be shaken in an extraordinary way. What did it make me feel? Awe. In awe of the creative mind (Kate Meuth’s) that spawned this theatrical experience.” EVE was named the Best Special Event of the Hamptons in 2012. The Neo-Political Cowgirls, founded and directed by Mueth, is a not-for-profit company of women dedicated to creating innovative dance theatre that explores the female voice. Mueth’s productions are designed for audience members to feel involved as well, breaking down conventional walls that traditionally separate the audience from the actors, and inviting its viewers to expect the unexpected. Their outreach work includes choreography workshops for girls and women that allow them to create work in their own voices that deal with subject matters most important to them. Performances this week include fundraisers for Bay Street Theatre tonight and tomorrow at 7 PM, and Friday, Saturday, and Sunday at 9 PM. LTV Studios on Industrial Road in Wainscott. Tickets are $35 online and $40 at the door. Visit www. npcowgirls.org.

Tonight At 8:30 By Emily Toy On Sunday night I traveled to Guild Hall in East Hampton to see a production of Noel Coward’s Tonight at 8:30 in the Dina Merrill Pavilion. In an almost packed house, the comedy was a series of three one-act plays focusing on such themes as life, family dynamics, death, marriage, show biz, the remedial troubles of being in high society, and love. Starring Tony and Emmy award winner Blythe Danner and Simon Jones, and directed by Tony winner Tony Walton the three one-act plays, titled “Hands Across The Sea,” “Family Album,” and “Red Peppers,” respectively, feature dancing and singing, as well as oodles of tonguein-cheek dialogue amongst the players. “Hands Across The Sea” is about a wealthy socialite named Lady Maureen Gilpin, played by a luminous Danner, attempting to deal with the arrival of a couple she completely forgot she invited. A telephone constantly ringing, other random guests, and free flowing alcohol only add fuel to the fire. “Family Album” focuses on a family of adult siblings gathered after the reading of a will left by their father, whose biggest mourner is his emotionally drained daughter Lavinia, also played by Danner. “Red Peppers” depicts a married couple who perform vaudeville together and end up clashing with their musical director. The supporting cast, Tuck Milligan, Andrew Botsford, Gerard Doyle, Delphi Harrington, Tina Jones, James Lawson, Kate Mueth, Bobby Peterson and Delphi Harrington, offers plenty of comedic relief and memorable characters. Vibrant costumes by Whitney Anne Adams and clever sets by Heather Wolensky also add a unique flair to the show. All the music throughout include songs Coward wrote himself. Peterson (who also serves as the production’s musical director) plays the piano, while moving no less, during a set change. Tonight at 8:30 is at Guild Hall all week with shows at, you guessed it, 8:30 PM. The final show is on Sunday at 2 PM. Tickets start at $40. For tickets and more information visit www.guildhall.org, the box office or call 631-324-4050. Guild Hall is located at 158 Main Street in East Hampton. Emily@indyeastend.com

2 Guns ( R) Mark Wahlberg and Denzel Washington pack the aforementioned heat and do the buddy thing. You’ve seen it all before, but it’s undeniably entertaining.

The Spectacular Now (R )* Critics and test audiences are falling in love with this obscure effort by director Michael H. Weber. The tale about two high school sweethearts is engaging, funny, and poignant. Shailene Woodley (“The Secret Life of the American Teenager”) steals the

Bullet To The Head (R). The funny thing is this movie really is funny. Based on the graphic novel (duh, just look at the title) Stallone plays a hit man who teams up with a cop (Taylor Kwon) to go after the bad guys who killed their partners. Walter Hill (48 Hours) directs and does an expert job of walking the tightrope between violence and camaraderie.

IN THE NEWS

Now Playing Red 2 (PG-13) The gang from Retired Extremely Dangerous is back for another go after the first film went viral worldwide. Bruce Willis, as Frank Moses, is, well, Bruce Willis. But John Malkovich damn near steals the show again – except of course, for the presence of Helen Mirren and Mary-Louise Parker. Oh yeah, Anthony Hopkins is in it, too. It’s more of the snappy banter and action, but of course, it seems a bit more contrived this time around. It’s still the fun movie of the summer. Wolverine (PG-13) Hugh Jackman is back in the title role, in this X- Men’s first solo outing. James Mangold (3:10 To Yuma) directs. Add a star if you buy into the whole Marvel thing. Still Mine (PG-13) * You’ve seen James Cromwell (Babe, The Green Mile) in a million movies, but never like this. Cromwell moves to the front of the list for Best Actor Oscar nominations with this stunning tour de force performance. He plays Craig Morrison, who wants to build a more accessible house for his ailing wife only to get stymied by a sea of red tape. The wonderful Geneviève Bujold co-stars. Michael McGowan has crafted a brilliant film, easily one of the best of the year.

Today’s Birthday: J.K. Rowling, 1965 by Asher Lee ARIES (Mar. 20 - Apr. 20) Bring the sparkle back to an old relationship by taking the lead and being your romantic and amorous self. Have fun with it and woo the one you love, unabashedly! For those who are looking for love, take heart and put yourself out there. Don’t sit around and wait to be wooed – go out there and do the wooing. Most of all, have fun. TAURUS (Apr. 20 - May 21) The only way you will be able to manage all the swirling energy is if you have a clear sense of your priorities. Take time over the weekend and make a list. If your family is your priority but you work 24/7 and have no time to spend with them, you will need to reconsider your work ethic. Think about it. GEMINI (May 21 - June 22) A small damn breaks this week and some truly great ideas find their way into your psyche. Embrace these ideas, but know this isn’t the time to take action on them. This is simply a time to collect the best ideas. No hurrying, just be patient. Allowing ideas to bubble to the surface and allowing them some room to grow will create the opportunity for at least one extraordinarily great idea to mature. CANCER (June 22 - July 23) Stuff is delayed and there is pretty much nothing you can do about it. You can get all frustrated and beat your head against the wall or you can chill out and do something else. Your choice. Why not chill out and save the wear and tear on your head? LEO (July 23 - Aug. 23) Time to trust yourself and allow yourself to shine. This is not a time to be asking those around you their opinions, or seeking

Janet Russell

approval or acknowledgement. This is a time of believing in yourself and trusting you know what is best for you. Keep your own counsel. VIRGO (Aug. 23 - Sept. 23) Open yourself to new ideas, but don’t forget who you are and where you have come from. This is a week to celebrate your history and how far you have come. Use your past as a reason to trust yourself into the future and perhaps you can look to the past to reclaim a talent or gift that you may have let go of somewhere along the way. LIBRA (Sept. 23 - Oct. 23) Show up and tell people what you intend to do, rather than explain your reasons for doing a thing, or try to make others understand you. Right now some people just aren’t going to ‘get’ what you are doing or what you are saying and you know what? That’s okay. You don’t have to defend yourself or your actions and you don’t have to justify your choices to anyone. SCORPIO (Oct. 23 - Nov. 22) Great week to take some time for yourself and practice self-nurturing. Take a walk by the water or go for a swim or simply take a long, leisurely bath. Whatever will help you to feel nourished and nurtured – these are the things to do. Love will find you as you get better at taking the time to love yourself. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22 - Dec. 21) The key to your ability to handle even very difficult things is allowing yourself alone time. This is like a cool refreshing glass of water on a very hot day. Nothing nourishes you like solitude. Make sure you take time for yourself, then go ahead and meet the day. You bring considerable energy

She went from collecting welfare to becoming one of the richest women in the world, all because of a delayed train. JoAnne Rawlings was en route to London from Manchester in 1990 when she envisioned a novel for young adults about a school for sorcerers while she sat aboard a stalled train. She began writing the book, but in the ensuing seven years her life fell apart. She lost her job with Amnesty International and her husband divorced her; her mother died. Unable to make ends meet, she accepted public assistance. Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone, her completed work, was rejected by a dozen publishers. Finally, Bloomsbury agreed to publish the book, giving Rowling a modest advance. (It was published in the US as Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone.) The publisher advised her to get a day job, however, pointing out children’s books seldom sell well. In fact, only 1000 copies were printed. Undaunted, Rowling – who used the pen name J.K. to avoid being typecast as a woman – received a grant that allowed her to begin working on a sequel. Within five months her life would change forever. After winning a series of awards, including the prestigious Children’s Book Award, Rowling sold the U.S. rights to her first book for $105,000. Each subsequent Harry Potter book – there were seven in all – broke sales records. The movie franchise was perhaps the most successful of all time. Today the Harry Potter brand is worth an estimated $15 billion and Rowling is among the wealthiest women in the world. Earlier this year it was discovered that The Cuckoo’s Calling, an obscure book by Robert Galbraith, was actually written by Rowling. Sales of the adult crime novel took off. Rowling now says she is working on a children’s book for readers younger that the Harry Potter market. She has never ruled out reviving her franchise at some future date. to any task this week. Don’t run from how much there is to do. Embrace it. CAPRICORN (Dec. 21 - Jan. 20) The energy this week allows you to find ways -- creative and interesting ways -- to transform ideas into reality. It’s all about making things real this week, so take action on those ideas and see how much you can get done. Take the steps to have your inner and outer worlds become accurate reflections of one another. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20 - Feb. 19) Honesty is the best policy this week. Make sure you are being really, really honest -- with yourself as well as those around you. Take off your rose-colored glasses and see the real reason you have been doing the things you have been doing. Get real with yourself. PISCES (Feb. 19 - Mar. 20) Objectivity needs to be your primary

hospitality. As I sat down to dinner with my friend, owner Timothy Gaglio offered us a large plate of cucumbers seasoned with olive oil, salt and pepper. This is a dish that is offered to all diners as they are seated, inviting them into the restaurant. This small touch makes diners feel right at home. To start, I tried caponata eoliana which consisted of eggplant, tomato,

golden raisins, celery, agrodolce and capers on crostini. This is a perfect dish to share with the table. My friend had the tortino di granchio, a jumbo lump crab cake with citrus aioli, also a very tasty choice. For our entrees my friend decided on the bistecca alla griglia, a certified angus steak with patate al forgo. I had the pollo al forno, oven roasted farm fresh chicken served with seasonal vegetables. Both of our entrees were spectacular. For dessert we tried the vanilla panino di gelato, the restaurants signature gelato sandwich, and also the homemade biscotti, served with a biscotti liqueur. Both were the perfect ending to a completely magnificent meal. Osteria Salina is open seven days for breakfast, lunch, dinner and late night. Fried Softshell Crab & Orange Sesame Slaw Frying Ingredients 4 soft shell crabs 2 c flour 2 c panko bread crumbs 3 tbsp paprika 1 tbsp cumin 2 tbsp Old Bay seasoning 2 tbsp ground black pepper 2 tbsp granulated garlic 2 tbsp corn starch ½ dozen eggs 1 cup of water 1 gallon of canola frying oil Coleslaw Ingredients ½ head white cabbage (shaved thin) ½ head of purple cabbage (shaved thin) 2 carrots (peeled and cut into thin sticks) 1 c cilantro (picked and chopped) 2 limes 4 oranges juiced ¼ c crème fraiche ¼ c sour cream ¼ c mayonnaise 2 tbsp honey 1 tsp sesame oil 2 tbsp sesame seeds Dressing Ingredients 1 oz ginger (peeled and minced) ½ shallot (minced) 2 scallions (sliced thin) ¼ c soy sauce 1 tbsp mirin 1 tbsp rice wine vinegar 1 tsp fish sauce ½ red bell pepper (minced) Method Start by heating the oil you will need to fry the soft shell crab. If you do not have a small tabletop fryer for your home you will need a candy thermometer and a large deep saucepot. Clean the softshell crab by snipping off the front area where the eyes are with a scissor. Flip the side of the shell up and clean out the gills. There is a flap on the underside of the crab indicating male or female. Cut that off and the crab is ready to be breaded and fried. Mix the flour, panko, seasoning and corn starch to make the breading. Whisk the eggs with one cup of water

and you have your crab breading. Whisk together the oj, crème fraiche, sour, cream, mayonnaise, honey, lime juice, and sesame oil to make your coleslaw dressing. Toss the shaved cabbage and carrots together with the dressing, the cilantro, salt and pepper. Mix the dressing ingredients together for the sauce to dress the crab after it has been fried. To fry the crabs, dip them in the egg mix and coat in the breading. Fry at 350 degrees for two minutes on each side. Place the crab on a bed of the mixed slaw. Garnish with some toasted sesame seeds and enjoy.
