SOLDIER RIDE THE HAMPTONS RIDE DEDICATION Lance Corporal Jordan C. Haerter was killed in action April 22, 2008 in Ramadi, Iraq at the age of 19. Jordan’s actions that day, along with fallen comrade 21-year-old Corporal Jonathan T. Yale, saved the lives of over 33 Marines and Iraqi Policemen. Jordan and Jonathan were posthumously presented the Navy Cross for extraordinary Heroism, our nation’s second highest military award.

Martin Sheen’s Big Summer

One was a big payday, the other was personal. The first movie casts Martin Sheen as the patriarch figure, Uncle Ben, in Hollywood’s epic superhero reboot, The Amazing Spider-Man, which opens on the East End this weekend. In the other, an intimate indie film titled Stella Days, Sheen portrays a parish priest forced to re-evaluate his vocation. D i r e c t o r M a r c We b b ’s T h e Amazing Spider-Man begins back at square one with the life-altering spider bite and spins a yarn of Peter Parker’s search for answers (see Reel Deal in this issue for Indy’s review). This quest leads him to Oscrop and the lab of Dr. Curt Connors, aka The Lizard. Taking into account Parker’s age, the screenplay is generously peppered with humor, skateboarding, and the Marvel superhero’s first crush – Gwen Stacy (Emma Stone). Though there were three relatively recent Spiderman movies starring Tobey Maquire, Sheen said he came into the project with no preconceived notions. “I had never seen them. I keep telling people, in an apologetic way,” he admitted. “I had seen a part of one with Tobey, whom I love, on an airplane once without earphones. A guy next to me was watching it. I was like, so that’s what people are all excited about.” Despite the adrenalin pumping action scenes and eye-popping CGI effects, Sheen approached his role from a human perspective. “Uncle Ben and Peter Parker, it’s not unlike any other parent-child relationship in the teenage years. It gets very awkward for young people and I’m familiar with that, both as a father and a grandfather.” The remark might be construed as a sly reference to the well publicized antics of Sheen’s youngest son, Charlie, whose new FX series, Anger Management aired last Thursday. Gently prodded, the actor maintains, “It’s often the child that gives you the most concern, who will also give you the most joy.” And yes, he will be doing a guest appearance or two on the series. What isn’t a mystery is Uncle Ben’s death in the comic book saga. That wasn’t a deterrent to Sheen, who explained, “People know how Hamlet is going to end up, or any other great historic franchises of the past. We go to opera, some of which are 200 years old, but we keep coming back, because it works and we want to see new life breathed into those characters.”
Lavish in his praise of fellow cast members, Sheen cites his onscreen nephew, “What a revelation Andrew Garfield was. This kid is quite sensational and it was very gratifying to witness the launch of a really huge career.” Stella Days was an extremely personal project seven years in the making. Sheen, who television viewers best remember as President Josiah Bartlet on The West Wing, recalled that it began with a family reunion prompted by the death of his older brother and coinciding with what would have been the 100th anniversary of his mother, Mary Ann Phelan’s, birth. “I called all the lads together with my sister Carmen, who lives in Madrid, in 2003. We all gathered in Borrisokane, my mother’s village in County Tipperary, and we had a wonderful mass celebration and a three-day hoopla with the family. At the time, a local fellow gave me the book called Stella Days, which was a memoir of this very place. It told of the parish priest, a real film buff, who opened the first cinema in northern Tipperary.” “Unbeknownst to me, [producer] Jackie Larkin had brought the rights and contracted me a while later to ask if I’d be interested if it was made into a movie. I said I’d be delighted,” noted Sheen, who was his mother’s seventh son. Finally in 2010, it all came together. Larkin reached out to Sheen in Spain where he was filming The Way. Another intimate portrayal with son, Emilio Estevez, at the helm, Sheen played an American doctor who undertakes an 800-kilometer pilgrimage from the French Pyrenees to Spain’s Santiago de Compostila, carrying the ashes of his deceased son. An outgrowth of that catalytic project was the recently published book, Along the Way: The Journey of a Father and Son, a memoir by Martin Sheen and son Emilio Estevez. Filming Stella Days occurred over October and November of that year with Sheen donning the priestly garb of Father Daniel Barry, a clergyman who was “reawakened to his humanity.” While he had lived an honest life, one motivated by love, Father Daniel was haunted by the idea that his vocation had never been a personal decision, but rather one foreclosed on him as a child. At one point during the development of the script it was suggested that they allow their protagonist to leave the priesthood. Sheen was firm in his stance, “I said
‘No.’ Let’s not ever let him leave because that’s the easy way out.” Forged by the depth of his selfexamination, Father Daniel emerges a better priest and a better man. The Way had brought Sheen to his father’s home in Galicia, while Stella Days was wrapped in his mother’s village. He concurred, “I felt that I had completed a personal mission in both of my parents’ homes and it satisfied something deeply personal with me. I wasn’t just playing a part, I was playing a part of myself.”

The Artist A silent screen star circa 1927 realizes that the coming “talkies” will end his career; meanwhile, a young extra dreams of stardom. A terrific, must-see film. Earned five Oscars including Best Picture, Best Actor (Jean Dujardin) and Best Director (Michel Hazanavicius.)
Now Playing People Like Us (PG-13) Alex Kurtzman, who worked with Chris Pine in Star Trek, casts his young star in a family dramedy this time around, and Pine once again delivers a fine performance. Cast as Sam, a high-powered salesman whose life crashes when a big deal collapses on the same day his father dies, Pine discovers he has a sister he’s never met (Elizabeth Banks). It doesn’t sound like much of a plot, but an absorbing screenplay and good actors make it surprisingly effective. Michelle Pfeiffer and the ever-present Mark Duplass co-star. Abraham Lincoln: Vampire Hunter (R) We kid you not. Tim Burton and

Timur Bekmambetov team up for this one, and unfortunately, they were apparently serious. Beasts Of The Southern Wild * (PG-13) Fox Searchlight has high hopes for this fantastical debut film by Ben Zeitlin, and it is a magical ride indeed. In fact, it is the first film of the year likely to garner an Oscar nomination. Don’t miss it. Snow White And The Huntsmen (PG-13) Credit Kristen Stewart, who can look dull and bored around werewolves and vampires and equally nonchalant with the evildoers and would-be assassins in this wacky film. The trouble is director Rupert Sanders isn’t sure if it’s a drama, an adventure, or a romance movie. In the end, it’s all over the map. Charlize Theron is luscious as the evil queen; Chris Hemsworth and Sam Claflin also star. Your Sister’s Sister (R) Director Lynn Shelton hasn’t had much commercial success – or artistic either, for that matter – with bombs like Humpday – but she has fashioned a complex and rewarding dramedy with this one. Shelton has attracted an excellent cast, and Emily Blunt, Mark Duplass, and Rosemarie DeWitt play off of each other like seasoned pros. Part family drama, part sex farce, the film is convoluted but undeniably original. Safety Not Guaranteed (R) Speaking of R rated dramedies starring Mark Duplass, here’s another one, opening almost simultaneously. Newcomer Colin Trevorrow, working off a script from Derek Connolly, directs Duplass as an eccentric supermarket clerk who believes in time travel. It’s quirky and funny, and it comes from the folks who brought us Little Miss Sunshine. Like that movie, it’s a little film with a big heart. Jeff Garlin and Kristin Bell co-star.

A lot of famous people were born on July Fourth including Geraldo Rivera, Neil Simon, and Gina Lollobrigida but most New Yorkers would answer George Steinbrenner if asked whose birthday it is. Steinbrenner, the irascible owner of the New York Yankees, parlayed a small investment in the team into a billion dollar fortune. After leading a group that purchased the team for a mere $10 million in 1973, Steinbrenner became majority owner and revolutionized the game, throwing money at big name free agents, staging very public shouting matches with his managers and even some players, and keeping himself in the news until his retirement in 2006. Larger than life, Steinbrenner also invested in Broadway plays, was a generous benefactor, owned a number or prominent racehorses, and was suspended from baseball after he acknowledged he made illegal campaign contributions to Richard Nixon. “The Boss,” as he was called, mellowed somewhat in the nineties, and under manager Joe Torre his teams won three straight World Series (1998-2000) and a total of seven during his stint as majority owner. Steinbrenner died in 2010, during a time when an impasse in Washington allowed the family to inherit his vast fortune -- estimated at $1.4 billion -- without paying a cent in taxes. Steinbrenner’s two sons Hank and Hal still run the Yankees today. The Boss was a one-woman man. He married his wife Elizabeth Joan in 1956 and the couple remained married for the rest of his life. A monument in Yankee Stadium’s Monument Park stands as tribute, along with the likes of Joe DiMaggio, Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, and Mickey Mantle. In typical Steinbrenner style his monument is by far the biggest.

The 4th of July is here. It's the unofficial beginning of summer. School's out, the weather is heating up, and it's time to let loose and have some fun. Sounds good right? Now you need to know where to eat, drink, and be entertained. I must suggest the trendy and exotic Thai eatery Phao in the heart of Sag Harbor Village. We stopped in for an early dinner last week and could not have been more pleased with our experience. As soon as we walked in I noticed a very social and lively happy hour crowd enjoying some food and drink at the bar. The decor and atmosphere are charming, exotic, and cool. It sets the perfect mood to enjoy the flavorful fusion style cuisine of Phao's talented Executive Chef Michael Swan. I had the coconut curry rock shrimp to start. They were light, crisp and delicious. The yellow curry dipping sauce that comes with it was mild and creamy, with just a touch of heat. For my main course I had the sea scallop with lobster dumplings and pineapple fried rice. The scallops were seared perfectly and the vanilla coconut curry emulsion was a delicate combination of well balanced flavors
that paired nicely with the scallops. If you're more of a Thai cuisine traditionalist, try the pad thai or one of their curry dishes. Phao is not only serving up delicious Thai inspired cuisine with a modern twist; you can stop in and check out the events board. They have late night entertainment all week that includes poetry readings, live music, and karaoke themed evenings (see Night Moves on page B-10 for full details). As we finished dining, the acoustic singer songwriter night was beginning. The staff certainly encourages any patrons as well as passers by to grab the mic and give it a go, and considering the neighborhood you never know who may walk by and decide to give a small impromptu performance. Whether you’re craving something flavorful and unique or looking to have a few drinks and embrace your inner Bruce Springsteen, Phao is the place you want to be. Peach Tart W/ Vanilla Whipped Cream Ingredients (serves 6) 1/2 c and 1 tbsp butter 1/2 c and 3 tbsp confectioner’s sugar 1 small pinch of salt 1 3/4 c all purpose flour seeds from one vanilla bean 1 tbsp lemon zest 2 egg yolks 1 1/2 tbsp cold milk 1/2 c granulated sugar 3 peaches sliced thin 6 mint leaves 2 c heavy cream 1 tsp vanilla extract parchment paper 1 package dry beans Method Begin by creaming together the butter, confectioner’s sugar, and salt in a food processor. Pulse in the flour, half the seeds from the vanilla bean, lemon zest, and egg yolks. When the mixture begins to come together, and looks like coarse breadcrumbs, add the cold milk. Pat together to form a ball of dough. Ideally you want to get your ingredients into dough form with the least amount of movement. This will help produce a nice flaky tart shell. Roll the dough into a sausage shape and let it rest and cool in the fridge for at least an hour.
When you are ready to bake the tart shell, turn the oven on to 350 degrees, then remove the dough from the fridge and slice the dough into flat pieces. Press and form them into your pie tin and cut off any excess dough that may be spilling over the top of the tin. Cut a piece of parchment paper slightly larger than the tin and line the tin with the paper. Fill with beans and bake for 15 minutes. At this point you are ready to prepare the peach filling. Begin by slicing the peaches then cook them with the granulated sugar over medium high heat, stirring often for about five minutes or until they become soft and give up a bit of their liquid. Strain out the liquid and reduce in a sauté pan until it has reached a nice sauce-like consistency. Fill the pre-baked tart shell with the peaches and return to the oven for another ten minutes. While this is happening you can make the whipped cream by whipping the heavy cream, three tbsp confectioners sugar, vanilla extract, and the rest of the vanilla seeds together in a blender. Let the tart cool for a few minutes when it comes out of the oven. Top with whipped cream and drizzle some of the peach sauce over and enjoy. www.chefjoecipro.com
