The Samuel Waxman Cancer Research Foundation will present its 8th Annual “Hamptons Happening,” honoring three star Michelin chef, Jean-Gorges Vongerichten on August 11 from 6:30 to 9 PM. The event titled “Jean-Georges a la carte” will take place at the home of Maria and Kenneth Fishel in Bridgehampton. Indy caught up with Samuel Waxman to discuss the SWCRF and the upcoming “Hamptons Happening” event. The Samuel Waxman Cancer Research Foundation is an international organization dedicated to curing and preventing cancer. “Samuel Waxman Cancer Research Foundation, founded 35 years ago has awarded over $80 million to 200 scientists,” stated Waxman. “The SWCRF mission is to understand the abnormal gene function that causes cancer and create a non-toxic treatment to cure cancer based on that knowledge. You might say we were ahead of the curve.” Waxman continued, “This concept has been proven by curing a form of acute leukemia by an international collaboration of SWCRF investigators. The SWCRF has established a unique ‘Institute Without Walls’ to support world-class teams of scientists to carry out this mission in most common forms of cancer. Our model of collaboration for a cancer cure goes back 35 years, also ahead of the curve.” When asked what SWCRF aims to achieve with this year’s “Hamptons H a p p e n i n g ” e v e n t Wa x m a n responded, “The 2012 “Hamptons Happening” is to bring old and new friends of the SWCRF to be with each other, enjoy a wonderful venue, hear the latest breakthroughs and encourage their financial support of the SWCRF programs. In particular, money raised will be designated for the SWCRF Breast Cancer program and Leukemia program.” The event will feature seven of Jean-Georges Manhattan restaurants including abc kitchen, JG Jean-

Georges, Jo Jo, The Mark Restaurant, (The Mercer) Kitchen, Perry St, and Spice Market. Heating up the evening, besides the chefs, will be one of 4 AM DJ’s hottest talent, DJ Phresh. Wa x m a n i s a m o n g m a n y anticipating a great turn out at the 2012 “Hamptons Happening.” “I am convinced that the SWCRF has created a culture for collaboration. The “Hamptons Happening” is special in that many have been coming since our first event and have a sense of being part of our mission. The positive energy and optimism that we can beat cancer is highly motivating. This “Hamptons Happening” is further energized by the collaboration with Jean-Georges and his chefs to put ‘icing on the cake.’” How did Jean-Georges become involved with the SWCRF? “JeanGeorges responded to the request of a special woman, a woman he admires and SWCRF supporter who had been treated for breast cancer,” Waxman replied. Also participating in the event will be Peter Ambrose Catering, Sag Harbor Baking Co., The Seafood Shop, Lucy’s Whey, Tate’s Bake Shop, Arlotta Foods, The Fudge Company and Exotic Chocolate Tasting. The 8th annual benefit is sure to bring a great crowd of supporters, as CBS News Anchor at 6, Chris Wragge will serve as the MC. “All of the ‘Hamptons Happenings’ have been special because of the hard work and high standards set by the co-chairs of the event. Besides the promise of the best food ever, the 8th has set a high bar for raising money for SWCRF cancer research programs. With everyone’s help this will happen.” To purchase tickets to the event contact Linda B. Shapiro at 631329-5480 or Bridget Stein at 631867-4502. Roger Rosenblatt To Appear In Amagansett

By Sergei Klebnikov

People around hear know Roger Rosenblatt – maybe they’ve seen him on campus -- he teaches writing at Stony Brook University and the Southampton College writer’s summer program. Maybe they are regular

readers -- he is well known for his Washington Post columns and his essays for Time Magazine and on PBS. Or maybe they’ve read one of his books. Locals can meet him up close and personal Saturday – he’ll be

speaking Saturday from 6 to 7 PM at the Amagansett Library as part of its “Authors After Hours” series. Rosenblatt is the author of 14 books, including several national bestsellers: Lapham Rising, Rules of Aging, and Unless It Moves the

Human Heart. Among the awards he has won are an Emmy, a Peabody, the Robert F. Kennedy book prize, and two George Polk awards. On Saturday, he will discuss his most recent book, Kayak Morning: Reflections on Love, Grief and Small Boats, a continuation of his musings on grief, his years as a journalist, and the satisfaction of literature. In an earlier book, Making Toast, Rosenblatt vividly described the story of his family in the wake of the unexpected death of his 38 year-old daughter, Amy, a doctor, wife, and a mother of three. Rosenblatt chronicles the next 15 months as he and his wife moved with their son-in-law and the loyal babysitter to stabilize their grandchildren’s lives. His most recent memoir takes up where Making Toast left off, in a kayak, in Penniman’s creek, near his home in Quogue. The book’s publisher, Harper Collins, describes the book as “part elegy, part quest,” in which Rosenblatt reminds us that “grief is not apart from life, but encompasses it.” The library event is free of charge but reservations are suggested due to limited seating. For information call 631-267-3810.

by Asher Lee ARIES (Mar. 20 - Apr. 20) Time to review your priorities. Take the time to actually sit down and write out your priorities. The energy has been moving fast yet now is the time to slow things down and figure out what is most important. Create personal priorities, your priorities as a couple if it applies and your priorities as a family. Trust me it is worth taking the time. TAURUS (Apr. 20 - May 21) Boundaries, yes it is all about boundaries right now. Know what you can do and can’t do and resist the urge to be all things to all people. Narrow down your choices and then do those things you know are yours to do. Just because you can do something doesn’t mean you should do it. Think about that. GEMINI (May 21 - June 22) Too much fun of late? It may be time to take a break and sit some things out so you can gather your strength. Time spent alone right now will be very valuable, so carve out some alone time for yourself and then when you feel back to your full strength go and be your social self once again. CANCER (June 22 - July 23) You may find yourself in the role of teacher this week, so do pay attention to all that you do and the choices you make about how you move through your world. People are looking to you to set the example, so step up to the plate and be your honorable self. Your actions now show others how they should be. Awesome responsibility, great opportunity, or both? LEO (July 23 - Aug. 23) Happy Birthday to all you Leo’s! What a great time to finish up old things and start your New Year fresh! Tie up loose ends, clean out closets and complete anything that has been dangling in your life. The new is born in the completion of the old, so do your best to move into the new energy with as little old baggage as possible. VIRGO (Aug. 23 - Sept. 23) Time to evaluate who you are spending your time with. Are you investing the most time with the people who really ‘get’ you and help you to be more of who you are or not? Time to align with your tribe. Limit interactions with those who just don’t ‘get’ you and cultivate the relationships with the people who do. LIBRA (Sept. 23 - Oct. 23) So, this week it will be easier than at other times to get all obsessed about something or someone. I think of these obsessive moments as times when we let the crazy person in our heads take over. Do your best to grapple the reigns

from this crazy person and stay in your true self, which is balanced. Catch yourself in the crazy and make another choice. SCORPIO (Oct. 23 - Nov. 22) Big picture. BIG picture. The only way certain things are going to make any sense right now is if you make sure you stand far enough away to see the bigger view of things. Great time to travel or learn something new- anything that will help your mind go to an expanded place. Ignore the minutia for it will certainly change. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22 - Dec. 21) Magical moments abound this week as long as you look around and choose to see them. Your life is moving in a magical direction; with the Universe leading the way and setting things up very nicely – so keep your hands out of it. Instead look around and see the magical signs and follow them. Trust this. CAPRICORN (Dec. 21 - Jan. 20) You like Sag above are in a magical momentum and your job is to go with the magic rather than doubt it and get caught up in anything that has you believing in something other than a magical Universe. It will not matter what things look like, just stay on task and watch the magic unfold. AQUARIUS (Jan. 20 - Feb. 19) Emotions rule this week, so get over your resistance to all those pesky feelings. Get clear with yourself about what you really need and then tell the people around you all about it. Your needs do need to be expressed because others can’t read your mind, no matter how much you think they should be able to. Emote. PISCES (Feb. 19 - Mar. 20) You will have to take a chance with the new and the different and the overall idea of change. Yes change is good, maybe a little scary, yet good none the less. All that you want is in the new and different, so embrace this – encourage it even. Re-arrange your furniture or drive to work a new route as a symbolic act that you are open to change.

Today’s Birthday: Jerry Garcia, 1942 There has never been a more unlikely rock star than Jerome John “Jerry” Garcia. As a youngster his maternal grandparents brought him up while his mother, a widow, worked long hours at a bar she owned in San Francisco. Garcia’s father, who died in a fishing accident when Jerry was five, was a professional musician and his son inherited his love of music. As a child Jerry, named after the composer Jerome Kern, studied piano and learned to read and write music, but his real love was bluegrass music, and he picked up a banjo and taught himself how to play despite missing his right index finger as a result of a mishap with an axe. In the early fifties Garcia began listening to blues and rock and roll and started playing electric guitar in earnest – he traded an accordion for one at a local pawn shop. By the time he was 16 he had a rock band good enough to make a recording. Garcia wasn’t particularly good looking, and he tended to be overweight, but he was destined to become one of rock’s most idolized performers. By the time he was 20, Garcia was proficient on several instruments and knowledgeable in folk, bluegrass, the blues, jazz, and even show tunes. He would continue to dabble in each genre throughout his career. In 1964 a band he was in, the Warlocks, morphed into the Grateful Dead, and the world’s first jam band was born. Fueled by pot and acid, the group’s legendary live shows attracted a legion of fans – Deadheads - who would remain faithful for the next 50 years, often traveling from show to show. He was a music junkie, often touring with other musicians when not on the road with The Dead. He had long musical relationships with Wynton Marsalis, Bruce Hornsby, members of the Jefferson Airplane, David Grisman and Merl Saunders, just to name a few. He taught himself the pedal steel guitar and can be heard playing on numerous records, including “Teach Your Children” by Crosby, Stills, and Nash and the first New Riders of the Purple Sage album. Garcia began dabbling with heroin somewhere along the way, and his health (and some say his playing) deteriorated over time. Yet the band flourished, becoming the highest grossing touring act in rock history. It was once said that The Dead could play Madison Square Garden every night of the year and sell out – and there would still be a market for scalpers. Garcia’s heart gave out in a rehab facility in 1995 at the age of 53. But the remnants of the Grateful Dead, a band called Further, still tour today. Many of the dilated pupils that follow them have been on the road since the beginning, a long strange trip indeed.

Killer Joe (NC-17) It’s been a while since William Friedkin (The Exorcist, The French Connection) had a commercial smash and this film probably won’t be – it’s too brutal, for one reason. It’s the story of a 22-year drug dealer (Emile Hirsch) who approaches his father (Thomas Haden Church) for help after his mother steals his stash. The pair decides to hire a hit man to kill the despised mother and collect her insurance. Enter Matthew McConaughey, who (Gasp!) gives a deeply textured yet disturbing performance as Joe Cooper. It’s a mystery, suspenseful and even funny at times. Ultimately, though, it’s too disturbing for the mainstream moviegoer. Ted (R) Seth MacFarlane, the creator of “Family Guy,” tries his hand on the big screen with this offbeat effort, about a grown man (Mark Wahlberg) whose cherished Teddy Bear suddenly comes to life. Really. There may be films that have been produced on flimsier plot lines, but we can’t think of any offhand. Nevertheless, MacFarlane, has a sick sense of humor, and some of his stuff is truly funny. The Dark Knight Rises (PG-13) Christian Bale returns as Batman/

Gar y Oldman, Michael Caine, and Anne Hathaway co-star. Tom Hardy, though, as the ruthless criminal Bane, gets the plum job as the villain that brings Batman out of retirement. Hara-Kiri: Death of a Samurai (NR) * Takashi Miike has created a remarkable film earmarked by his stunning camera work and gripping performances. On the surface it is the tale of a samurai who wants an honorable death by ritual suicide, but the plot runs far deeper, and branches out in many unforeseen directions. This film may not be screened on the East End, but New Yorkers should take note to look for it in the city. The Collaborator (NR) Martin Donovan wrote, directed, and stars in this film, billed as a comedy about a screenwriter on the skids. It’s not really funny, but critics seem to like it. On the other hand, audiences haven’t. Be forewarned. Co-starring David Morse, Olivia Williams, and Katherine Helmond. The Imposter * Critics are raving about this documentary about the 1994 disappearance of a 13 yearold in Texas. Director Bart Layton, in his first effort, deftly lays out a series of occurrences even Hollywood’s greatest scriptwriters would have trouble coming up with. And it’s all true. This film may not make it to the East End, but it is worth a trip to Manhattan if it doesn’t.

The North Fork Oyster Company, located in the heart Greenport, is a spectacular dining location with creative cuisine. The upscale seafood restaurant offers much more than just oysters. Executive chef Alex Algieri provides a variety of beautiful dishes in a gorgeous setting. We stopped by for lunch while on our “daycation” to Greenport via the Peconic Water Jitney (see Traveler Watchman page). To start, I tried one of specialty cocktails. Also on tap, a glass of the harbor ale from the Greenport Brewery. For our lunch selections, the pinenut crusted organic chicken

breast served with chicory and local berries. Also ordered, the local oyster ‘PoBoy’ served on a brioche bun, with asian slaw and smoked paprika aioli. North Fork Oyster Company serves up the freshest local produces and seafood from the surrounding waters. Stop by for lunch or dinner any day of the week. Now that you have the marinade ready, it’s time to cut the steak and

Be sure to turn the kabobs after about one minute and continue to brush with the marinade. Grill for about five to seven minutes or until the steak and vegetables are cooked. www.chefjoecipro.com
