A Funny Thing Happening In Sag Harbor
Independent/Jerry Lamonica
By Rick Murphy It is mind boggling to consider a legendary Broadway play, replete with music, dance, a fantastic design team and a star-studded cast of professional actors (18!) will be staged live in Sag Harbor. Oh yeah, did we mention a Tony-nominated director? Only Bay Street Theatre could pull it off, and the tiny theatre that could, has done it many, many times. This summer’s featured production, A Funny Thing Happened On The Way To the Forum, may well prove to be one of the best ever staged here. The pedigree is impeccable. Written by Burt Shevelove and Larry Gelbart with a timeless score courtesy of Stephen Sondheim, Forum has been an audience favorite since its first performance in 1962 – who will ever forget Zero Mostel – through its revival in 1996 (with Nathan Lane) and ever since. Peter Scolari (“Bosom Buddies,” Honey I Shrunk The Kids) gets the coveted role of Prologus/Pseudolus in this reincarnation, and he’s more
than up to the task. John Schuck (“McMillan & Wife”) and Jackie Hoffman of Second City fame costar. The show is in the capable hands of director Marcia Milgrom Dodge, who directed and choreographed the revival of Ragtime on Broadway in 2009 – it earned seven Tony nominations, including Best Director. Dodge has traveled extensively, but Sag Harbor holds a special place in her heart, she said. “I go all over the country. A community is stronger if you have a cultural center,” she said of Bay Street. “This is a great escape, and it is fun being in a waterside community.” The synergies are amazing: E.L. Doctorow, who wrote the novel Ragtime, is a long time resident of Sag Harbor and he and his wife Helen will be attending the play, she added. Then there is Tony Walton, one of the co-founders of Bay Street. He did the set design for the original production of Forum. For Scolari, it is yet another

opportunity to exercise his comedic chops. He was an unknown when he was cast alongside Tom Hanks for the TV show – “Bosom Buddies” – and spent much of his time in front of the camera dressed as a woman. “We were nice guys,” he recalled. “We resented being in drag, but there is a long history in theater of men in drag. When I look back we did some of our best work.” Scolari then worked with the master himself on the “Bob Newhart Show” and it proved to be a virtual primer in television comedy. “You never knew who would show up. One day it was Don Knotts, the next day, Steve Allen.” Schuck has been working steadily since his stint on “McMillan,” which ran from 1971-77. His credits include “Roots,” two Star Trek movies, and Annie Get Your Gun on Broadway. “This is a part I’ve always wanted to play,” Schuck said about his role as Senex in Forum. “And, I get to sing the best song – ‘Everybody Ought To Have A Maid.’ He’s a dirty old man!” The cast’s secret weapon may well
be Hoffman, a wickedly funny New Yorker who regularly performs on stage and in comedy clubs. “She’s clearly written by a man,” she says of her character, Domina. “She’s a shrew, but she’s a loveable shrew.” Hoffman worked with the likes of Steve Colbert and Chris Farley at Second City, so she knows a thing or two about timing. The play itself is classic Gelbart – with an assist from the great farces of the Roman playwright Plautus. The plot, such as it is, centers around a young slave (Pseudolus) who tries to win his freedom by hooking his master up with the beauty next door. Along the way there are enough twists and turns and puns to keep the audience mesmerized – and in hysterics. “People are going to be blown away by this,” Dodge predicted, “They will get a bang for their buck.” The show runs through September 1. Tickets should be reserved at once: call 631-725-9500 for tickets. Visit baystreet.org for show times and additional information.

Dan Hicks: The Last Train . . . To Amagansett By Rick Murphy
O n e f l u m m o x e d r e v i e w e r, attempting to categorize the music of Dan Hicks, described it as a combination of country, swing, jazz and the blues, thus covering all the major food groups – except rock, that is. But for better or for worse, the music of Dan Hicks and The Hot Rocks ultimately belongs in that category simply because there is no other place to put it – it defies classification. “My parents were Countr y Western fans,” Hicks said in a recent interview. “I started to like jazz, swing, Dixieland stuff. I was a Glen Miller fan in junior high school, but I was aware of Elvis and Bill Haley and those guys. But I listened to mostly jazzy stuff.” Hicks was born in Arkansas but raised in Northern California. Despite his love of the other genres, Hicks began his professional career with The Charlatans, a San Francisco rock band with a strong cult following. Hicks, oddly enough, played drums – odd because his next band usually performed without a drummer. That was 1969, the beginning of Dan Hicks and the Hot Licks and four seminal albums that redefined what rock music was and what it could be – “pro-psychedelia to western swing and jazz, Tin Pan Alley to country blues,” was one definition. And oh yeah, a smidgen of hilarity built into the lyrics. “Humor comes to me easily,” Hicks said. “It’s something I want to do. I like to keep the performances light, but every once in a while I’ll write a serious song.”
The four-album run with his original band ended with the appropriately titled Last Train To Hicksville, a certifiable masterpiece that left the maestro with a number of enticing career opportunities. Instead, after playing all over the world and appearing on the cover of Rolling Stone three times, he abruptly disbanded the band. When informed he was probably sitting on a major payday, Hicks said, “I don’t know . . . I guess I’m aware of that. There are certain sounds that represent a certain time . . . I designed it, and it sort of evolved. I don’t think I walked away, I was in the ballpark. I could have plugged in, but I had more of a folk awareness.” Hicks started playing the guitar and eventually formed a band called “The Acoustic Warriors” but the format of his “classic band” -- a fiddler and two female vocalists always at the core -- was one he’d continue to return to. “I like singing with people, and I like writing other parts. It inspires me.” In 2000 he recorded Beatin’ the Heat on Surfdog Records with the help of a few of his friends -- Elvis Costello, Rickie Lee Jones, Bette Midler, Tom Waits and Stray Cats guitarist Brian Setzer. A decade later, typical of Hicks’ eclectic style, he recorded the Hot Licks Christmas Album. This year, the folks at Surfdog came up with the idea of recording his 70th birthday party, the recently released Live At Davies, a raucous, star-studded, improvised affair that is awkward, sloppy – and absolutely wonderful.

“It was kind of loose,” Hicks remembered. “It was do or die in front of 3000 people. It was an event. Backstage it was like an old folk scene. The recording was secondary to the event.” Hicks brings the latest edition
of the Hot Licks to the Stephen Talkhouse on Sunday, August 11 at 7 PM. Tickets can be had a 631-2673117 or online but grab them fast. “I like that little place,” Hicks said of The Talkhouse. “It’s a good little trip out there.”

by Asher Lee ARIES (Mar. 20 - Apr. 20) Creative energy abounds this week; make sure you do something about it. Catch the wave of inspiration and keep on the move. Some situations may end up being short-lived, but they will surely be worth the journey. Don’t get into outcomes - enjoy the moment. TAURUS (Apr. 20 - May 21) You do have to be who you are. Guilt and obligation may be a way people motivate you or it’s something you buy into. While this may have worked in the past, it is probably getting more and more uncomfortable to go along with things that way. Be true to yourself and leave the guilts behind. It won’t be your best choice to deny your own truth to make someone else happy. GEMINI (May 21 - June 22) Spending time beating yourself up? Or are you lost in self-doubt and second-guessing yourself? Find a way to give yourself a break and become a cheerleader in your life, rather than a critic. Not everything is your fault. If we could have done things differently in the past, surely we would have. Cut yourself some slack. CANCER (June 22 - July 23) Great time to take some steps back and get a good overview of your life. It’s pretty cool when you look at it from a bit further away, eh? If you can make the time to take a vacation, this is a great time. LEO (July 23 - Aug. 23) Find those things that truly move you and begin doing them. Take action on something that moves you, at least one small thing every day. Best to follow all which you are feeling rather than look back and wonder what if. If you are moved, do it!
Janet Russell
VIRGO (Aug. 23 - Sept. 23) Disappointed? It may have something to do with your ability to get really, really attached to how things should be. This would be a good time to learn how to get okay with what is rather than thinking things need to be different. What if it is true that everything is exactly how it needs to be for you to feel happy and be self-actualized? Think it’s possible the Universe is that amazing? Think about it. LIBRA (Sept. 23 - Oct. 23) Love is in the air. Don’t feel like you need to go look for it. You may find it very close to home. Spend time with family and really check in with your home and make sure it is all you want it to be. At least for what you can afford right now. Make the most of what you have. Enjoy yourself and when you have the chance to feel the love of others, embrace it. SCORPIO (Oct. 23 - Nov. 22) Take a break. After you take this break, return to the negotiations of your life armed with the four rules of negotiation: 1. Show up. 2. Pay attention. 3. Tell the truth. 4. Don’t be attached to the outcome. If you do this, you will suffer no disappointment. All your lessons and gifts happen in the first three rules. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22 - Dec. 21) Trust your intuition as things progress this week. Say no to opportunities which don’t feel quite right. Trust that something better will come along. Be picky and honor your intuition about things. Today’s Birthday: Billie Burke, 1884 Take a good look at that face. Chances are, some of the most magical moments of your youth revolve around this woman. Mary William Ethelbert Appleton Burke traveled extensively as a child, in both Europe and America. Her father was a professional clown, so she began acting as a youngster. She starred in the London production of The School Girl at 19 and returned to the states shortly after. A beguiling woman who could sing, dance, and act, “Billie” became a huge Broadway star. She caught the eye of the producer Florenz Ziegfeld and the pair married in 1914. Burke favored the stage over the silver screen, and worked only sporadically after her marriage. But the family lost most of its money when the stock market crashed in 1929, and Ziegfeld died shortly after. She was forced to return to work at the age of 45. She landed a key role in in A Bill of Divorcement, playing the mother of a then-unknown ingénue, Katharine Hepburn. The following year, she struck gold playing Millicent Jordan in the wildly successful comedy Dinner at Eight alongside Lionel Barrymore, Marie Dressler, John Barrymore, Jean Harlow and Wallace Beery. In 1937 Burke started in Topper and the following year she was cast in the role that would make her immortal. Yes, Burke was nominated for an Academy Award -- for her performance as Emily Kilbourne in Merrily We Live. But she is remembered forever as Glinda The Good Witch in The Wizard of Oz. Burke was a hit on radio in the 40s and had her own TV show in the early 50s. She died of natural causes when she was 85. It is her face that graced the poster outside the Ziegfeld Theater for decades. need right now. This is a great week to really get into the idea of leisure. If you can’t take time off from work, find a way to build a bit of down time and self-nurturing time into every day. Take a bath and light some candles. Let your feelings lead you and you will find yourself taking a much-needed rest.
enough in a comfy chair and lose the desire to do anything. Stop yourself from making these choices. Do those things you want to do and start doing them before you start talking yourself out of them. It is a good enough reason simply that you want to do something. Do it!
AQUARIUS (Jan. 20 - Feb. 19) Take hold of your mind and find ways to distract yourself from patterns of worry. Your mind may be very busy right now and you need to find ways to get a better handle on it so that you don’t simply end up torturing yourself for no good reason. All those worries that fill your head are pretty much made up and will most likely never happen - so stop it!

Method Begin by creaming together the butter, confectioner’s sugar, and salt in a food processor. Pulse in the flour, half the seeds from the vanilla bean, lemon zest, and egg yolks. When the mixture begins to come together and looks like coarse bread crumbs add the cold milk. Pat together to form a ball of dough. Ideally you want to get your ingredients into dough form with the least amount of movement. This will help produce a nice flaky tart shell. Roll the dough into a sausage shape and let it rest and cool in the fridge for at least an hour.

When you are ready to blind bake the tart shell turn the oven on to 350 degrees. Remove the dough from the fridge and slice the dough into flat pieces. Press and form them into your pie tin and cut off any excess dough that may be spilling over the top of the tin. Cut a piece of parchment paper slightly larger than the tin and line the tin with the paper. Fill with beans and bake for 15 minutes. At this point you are ready to prepare the peach filling. Begin by slicing the peaches. Cook the peaches and granulated sugar over medium high heat, stirring often
for about five minutes, or until they become soft and give up a bit of their liquid. Strain out the liquid and reduce in a sauté pan until it has reached a nice sauce like consistency. Fill the pre baked tart shell with the peaches and return to the oven for another 10 minutes. Make the whipped cream by whipping the heavy cream with three tbsp confectioners sugar, vanilla extract, and the rest of the vanilla seeds together in a blender. Let the tart cool for a few minutes when it comes out of the oven. Top with whipped cream. Drizzle some of the peach sauce over and enjoy.
