THE INDEPENDENT Q Traveler Watchman

by Asher Lee

Today’s Birthday: Dustin Hoffman, 1937 Dustin Hoffman was a struggling actor in New York when he was cast by Mike Nichols as Benjamin Braddock, a recent college graduate who is seduced by an older woman (played by Anne Bancroft) in The Graduate. Hoffman was already 30 at the time, but the film made him a star. Oddly, Hoffman passed on a chance to star in The Producers. Hoffman grew up in Los Angeles but headed east with fellow actor Gene Hackman and studied at the famed Actors Studio. He began getting bit parts in 1960, but found it difficult to make ends meet. Both struggling actors soon found themselves in heavy demand. Hoffman received an Oscar nomination for The Graduate in 1967; Hackman struck gold with Bonnie And Clyde the same year. In 1969 he earned another for his role in Midnight Cowboy. In 1974 Hoffman was nominated again for playing the title role in Lenny. He won a statue in 1979 for Kramer vs. Kramer and another 11 years later for Rain Man. Hoffman, a tireless worker, continued to appear on stage throughout his career and has been in scores of major motion pictures, most recently the Fockers movies and the voice of Master Shifu in Kung Fu Panda. Hoffman has seven children from two marriages and two grandchildren. In addition to his two Oscars he has seven Academy Award nominations. Hoffman has won five Golden Globes, four BAFTAs, three Drama Desk Awards, a Genie Award, and an Emmy Award. In 1999 Hoffman received the American Film Institute Lifetime Achievement Award.

ARIES (Mar. 20 - Apr. 20) You may want to tune in to your body this week. Concrete and tangible things (like your body) need your attention right now. Eat right and take breaks when you need to and then boldly move forward and create a new world for yourself. TAURUS (Apr. 20 - May 21) Excellent week for taking care of yourself, especially if you have been very involved in taking care of others lately. Do some self nurturing, take a nice bath, go for a walk by the water, buy yourself some flowers, anything that is a true sign that you are taking care of you. GEMINI (May 21 - June 22) It’s all good. Don’t get too caught up in how things appear to be this week. Everything really is working toward a win/win. Adjust your perspective and see if you can see the win/win opportunity. There is little if anything that can keep you from your goals now, so trust the win/win energy. CANCER (June 22 - July 23) Your inner critic seems to be working overtime right now. Find ways to hush that voice and give yourself a

break. We give others lots of second chances and yet we hold ourselves to such a high standard. Do your best to cut yourself some slack and see if you need to require more from those around you. LEO (July 23 - Aug. 23) Balance is the great quest this week. You do have the power to take actions that will help you stay balanced or achieve balance, so use your power wisely. If something seems overly complicated, trust that there is a simple way to get things done. Balanced and Simple – try it. VIRGO (Aug. 23 - Sept. 23) Take a break. It is time to ‘be’ and not ‘do.’ I mean, really, haven’t you been ‘doing’ more than enough lately? Balance all the time of doing and doing with some much needed just sitting and being time. Excellent time to hang out with a Taurus and do some self-nurturing. Take a spa day. LIBRA (Sept. 23 - Oct. 23) Focus will matter a great deal this week. There is so much energy around for getting things done and going and doing and being in general. The

only way to not get lost in the flurry of energy will be to stay focused on your goal or goals. You don’t have to have a detailed plan; you just have to be sure of where you want to go. SCORPIO (Oct. 23 - Nov. 22) Your communication style is up for review. How do you come off to others? Are you being received in the way you intend? Are you sharing enough of yourself that others really do have a chance to ‘know’ you? You have the right content in what you want to say, now find the right style that will allow you to be heard. SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22 - Dec. 21) There has been a part of you that has been processing a good deal of old sorrow and guilt. It has just been this undercurrent that may be running through most things. Now comes the time to let all that old stuff go so you don’t have to drag it in to the future. Perform a ritual if you need, just release the old wounds. CAPRICORN (Dec. 21 - Jan. 20) It IS about the truth. The whole truth when you have the chance. Things are moving as fast as they can and your job will be to show up and tell the truth. Don’t be afraid to show off all the parts of yourself. Use up all your considerable skills, just don’t be hasty.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20 - Feb. 19) Time for some talking! Offer your opinions when you find yourself in a situation where others offer theirs. You usually don’t need encouragement to speak up; now you need to remember to do so. If you walk away still having the conversation in your head, then you didn’t speak up enough. PISCES (Feb. 19 - Mar. 20) Time for some kind of big creative burst of energy. Don’t be afraid of your dark side, we all have one. Use this borderline between light and dark energy to fuel your next creative project. Roar if you need to roar. Don’t be afraid of big dramatic energy. If you have it and you feel it then be it! NOTE: If you were born at the end or beginning of a sign, read the sign before or after your birthday. Asher Lee is a professional Astrologer and Tarot reader. Jiro Dreams of Sushi A documentary about Jiro Ono, 85, the world’s greatest sushi chef. His tiny 10-seat restaurant in Tokyo is considered among the best in the world. Needless to say, meatloaf isn’t on the menu. If you think it’s hard to get a seat at Nick & Toni’s on July Fourth, consider folks come from all over the world, booking a table months and even years in advance.

Now Playing Diary Of A Wimpy Kid: Dog Days (PG-13) Greg Heffley, the hero of the book series, comes to the big screen as played by Zachary Gordon (National Treasure: Book Of Secrets). David Bowers (Star Wars Episode III) directs. If you are 13, this is a must see movie. Klown (NR) This insane film follows three crazy people – two men and a 12 year-old, through a series of escapades too outlandish to even mention here. There is a slapstick element to the film we couldn’t quite get into, but it is undeniably funny and strangely sentimental. It’s worth the price of admission and then some. Killer Joe (NC-17) It’s been a while since William Friedkin (The Exorcist, The French Connection) had a commercial smash and this film probably won’t be – it’s too brutal, for one reason. It’s the story of a 22-year drug dealer (Emile Hirsch) who approaches his father (Thomas Haden Church) for help after his mother steals his stash. The pair decides to hire a hit man to kill the despised mother and collect her insurance. Enter Matthew McConaughey, who (Gasp!) gives a deeply textured yet disturbing performance as Joe Cooper. It’s a mystery, suspenseful and even funny at times. Ultimately, though, it’s too disturbing for the mainstream moviegoer. Ted (R) Seth MacFarlane, the creator of “Family Guy,” tries his hand on the big screen with this offbeat effort, about a grown man (Mark Wahlberg) whose cherished Teddy Bear suddenly comes to life. Really. There may be films that have been produced on flimsier plot lines, but we can’t think of any offhand. Nevertheless, MacFarlane, has a sick sense of humor, and some of

IN THE NEWS

his stuff is truly funny. The Dark Knight Rises (PG-13) Christian Bale returns as Batman/ Bruce Wayne four years after the last megahit. As was the case the last time, the film is too long at 165 minutes, and all the action sequences begin to wear. Gar y Oldman, Michael Caine, and Anne Hathaway co-star. Tom Hardy, though, as the ruthless criminal Bane, gets the plum job as the villain that brings Batman out of retirement. Hara-Kiri: Death of a Samurai (NR) * Takashi Miike has created a remarkable film earmarked by his stunning camera work and gripping performances. On the surface it is the tale of a samurai who wants an honorable death by ritual suicide, but the plot runs far deeper, and branches out in many unforeseen directions. This film may not be screened on the East End, but New Yorkers should take note to look for it in the city. The Collaborator (NR) Martin Donovan wrote, directed, and stars in this film, billed as a comedy about a screenwriter on the skids. It’s not really funny, but critics seem to like it. On the other hand, audiences haven’t. Be forewarned. Co-starring David Morse, Olivia Williams, and Katherine Helmond. The Imposter * Critics are raving about this documentary about the 1994 disappearance of a 13 yearold in Texas. Director Bart Layton, in his first effort, deftly lays out a series of occurrences even Hollywood’s greatest scriptwriters would have trouble coming up with. And it’s all true. This film may not make it to the East End, but it is worth a trip to Manhattan if it doesn’t. The Amazing Spider Man (PG13) Again? Yep. This time with a new director (Marc Webb) and a new cast. But Andrew Garfield (The Social Network) as Peter brings some chops to the role. Unlike Tobey Maquire, a somewhat nerdy Spiderman whose overly innocent look seldom left his face, Garfield has a chip on his shoulder -- he’s something of a rebel, and Emma Stone (The Help) is perfect as Gwen. It’s slick summer fare to be sure, but it’s edgy enough to distinguish itself from the original. Martin Sheen, Dennis Leary and Sally Field anchor an excellent supporting cast. The Pact (NR) Nicholas McCarthy’s first film has a tired premise: Two sisters (played by Agnes Bruckner and Caity Lotz) return home after their mother dies and stay overnight in the house. When the lights go out . . . yes, you guessed it – creepy things happen. Yes, folks, ghosts. The twist is the sisters unveil some dark secrets about mumsy. It is what it is – summer product for the young crowd.

Sheen’s Winning in `Anger Management’ By Winnie Bonelli

Tiger blood, live-in goddesses, “winning,” drugs, wrecked hotel rooms - Charlie Sheen’s outrageous exploits commandeered the daily front pages of media outlets around the globe for months. His selfdestructive antics held little promise of ever salvaging one of television’s most lucrative careers. Sheen was pulling down $1.8 million per episode for “Two and a Half Men” before he launched into a public tirade against the show’s creator Chuck Lorre. CBS and Warner Bros. quickly responded by barring Sheen from the production lot and tapped Ashton Kutcher to fill the vacancy. Now, a little more than a year later, the 46-year-old actor is back on top of his game with the FX sitcom “Anger Management.” Halfway through the initial order of 10 episodes, “Anger Management’s” numbers look like a sure bet for another 90 shows renewal, the magical number required for syndication. Of that dark period last year, Sheen admitted, “Yeah, it was a crazy time. It was sort of like a dream I couldn’t wake up from, or a runaway train I couldn’t get off, but I was the conductor,” he said. “It was something that could never happen again, so that was pretty cool. Not that anybody wants it to, including me. I learned a lot.” Sheen said he learned a valuable lesson. “I learned stick to what you know. Don’t go on the road with a one-man show in 33 days in 21 cities with no act. So yeah, my life’s different now that I’m not insane anymore.” Breaking cable history records with back-to-back premiere episodes on June 28, “Anger Management” casts Sheen as an anger management therapist, who juggles a successful

private practice, along with performing pro bono counseling for an inmate group at a state prison. Complicating his life is his own therapist/best friend (Selma Blair), ex-wife (Shawnee Smith), and 13-year-old daughter (Daniela Bobadilla) suffering from OCD. The situation is new, but Sheen’s intact bad boy persona guarantees an easy transition for long time fans of “Two and a Half Men.” Joining the core of regulars on August 16 is Martin Sheen playing Martin Goodson, Charlie’s dad, which isn’t much of a stretch – he is Charlie’s dad. Since there’s “no real rehearsal” and “no audience,” according to creator/executive Bruce Helford, the show leaves wiggle-room for improvisation. On stage with cameras rolling, Martin was impersonating Bogart and Cagney, when Charlie urged, “Do Brando from Apocalypse. I’ll play you as Willard.” Suddenly the father-son pair was creating an unplanned, spontaneous, kinship moment. So what was their relationship like far removed from Hollywood and years earlier? “Dad was awesome. He tells stories I can’t recall. He was a regular dad, except he just took us all over the world making movies. Outside of that, it was like any other family,” recalled Charlie, who made his screen debut in Martin’s 1974 film The Execution of Private Slovik. “I guess anytime you play a character there’s a lot of yourself that you bring to it. You can’t avoid that if you’re playing the truth. So we have incorporated certain things that are very specific to me and, perhaps, to the other show, just as a wink and a nod.” After mastering his acting chops in hard hitting Oliver Stone films like Platoon and Wall Street, Sheen

appeared to effortlessly shift gears into a comedy mode with Major League, Money Talks, and Hot Shots, before fleeing to the small screen as Charlie Crawford in “Spin City,” and later Charlie Harper in “Two and a Half Men.” Does he consciously use different sets of acting muscles when switching from drama to comedy? And which

is more difficult? Sheen replied, “With “Anger Management” some days are more difficult, some days less. It’s a whole different animal. In particular with this show, there’s no time to over think it. Things happen, and sometimes they’re wonderful and sometimes they’re not. That’s just how we all figure out these characters and these stories.”

Nonstop To Cairo Stops At Skate Fest

Independent/Kerri Dornicik

By Kitty Merrill

Shoulder to shoulder, elbowto-elbow, hip-to-hip, everybody bounced, a single entity in thrall of the energy. Nonstop To Cairo snagged a late night slot at The Point during last spring’s Montauk Music Festival and, quite simply, rocked the

house to the rafters. The six-piece band played in a corner of the modest venue. There was no formal stage and vocalist August Harris didn’t seem to mind. He danced into the audience, at times nose to nose with an apparent mother of the bride from a wedding party. He danced into the audience

and the audience surged back into a sound that’s best described as a cross-genre rock/ska/funk/hip hop bubbling stew. Fairly newly convened, Nonstop To Cairo formed its current roster -- Nick Diamond (guitar and vocals), Harris (vocals), Haja Rama (trumpet), Andrew Hagerty (trombone) Matt Ezzo (bass) and Dave Bartlett (drums) -- following a crisis in 2009 that would have ended the musical career of one less mettled. Diamond worked as a carpenter during the day and caught his fret hand in a band saw severing three of his fingers and mangling the rest of his hand. Surgery successfully reattached severed segments, but the resulting hand bore little resemblance to the guitarist’s original appendage. “He had to learn guitar all over again,” manager Rob Follano informed. The band, at the time a threesome, had gigs booked and, loath to cancel, Diamond recruited a horn section. The resulting vibe was so satisfying – and unique -- the guys decided to run with it. And run they did. Within three months’ time Nonstop To Cairo went from a three-piece to a six-piece band, writing new songs and harnessing a new sound. Three months after that, with Diamond still recovering from his injuries, Nonstop beat hundreds of bands to win the “Long Island Battle of the Bands.” Throughout 2010 Nonstop played as many shows as they could. Last year members decided it was time

to put an album together. This past April, Nonstop To Cairo released their ‘Self-Titled’ EP, recorded by multi-platinum record producer Jim Sabella, who’s worked with LLCoolJ, Public Enemy and Marcy Playground. He raved about the ensemble, and is quoted stating, “Nonstop To Cairo is one of the best bands I’ve seen and recorded in a long time.” Since they released the album, Nonstop’s continued to play shows, touring up and down the East Coast, rocking festivals, and playing alongside idols and renown artists Galactic, Dumpstaphunk, Tea Leaf Green, and Moe. They’ve also acquired a huge skateboard apparel and footwear sponsor in Etnies, as their music will be featured in several new skateboard videos that will be sold worldwide. That last feather in Nonstop’s cap is especially apt this week. On Saturday afternoon around one, they’re playing at the Greenport Skate Park festival. With members from Baldwin -the original three grew up together – Nonstop will be playing all over Long Island, the city, and upstate this season. They planned another visit to the Hamptons this summer, but venue bookings dissolved, leaving Greenport their sole East End gig. Lucky for the Greenport Skate Park Festival; not so much for South Forkers, where promoters should rush to book these emerging new artists before they can’t. kmerrill@indyeastend.com

Situated on Shinnecock Bay, CowFish holds two floors of indoor and outdoor seating along with an outdoor bar. On Sunday some friends and I stopped by for the restaurants weekly jazz brunch. During brunch we were serenaded by a barbershop duo in pinstripe coats. We tried the

blackened fish sandwich, a cajun grilled white fish with housemaid tartar, bibb lettuce, tomato and onion. Also a rotisserie chicken with spanish rice and pan drippings. Another brunch favorite, steak with poached eggs and a béarnaise sauce. CowFish ser ves the best in seafood, steaks and rotisserie meats. Looking for a cocktail on the outdoor patio? Try “The Bearded Lady” made with Jack Daniel's Honey, pink guava puree, basil leaves, soda and lime, or “The Bees Knees,” made with Dorothy Parker American Gin, honey and lemon juice. CowFish is open Tuesday through Sunday. Come by land or sea. CowFish 258 E Montauk Highway Hampton Bays 631-594-3868

Orecchiette With Sausage, Cherry Tomatoes, And Roasted Shallot Cream Sauce Ingredients 4 cups dried orecchiette pasta 1 quart cherry tomatoes 1/2 lb ground sausage 10 oz arugula 3 tbsp butter 3 shallots 1/2 c heavy cream 1/2 c grated parmesan cheese 2 sprigs of rosemary (chopped) 1 handful of parsley (chopped) 1/4 c olive oil 1/4 c white wine 1 tbsp ground black pepper salt to your liking

Method (Serves 4) Bring a medium sized pot, full of salted water, to a boil over high heat. Set your oven to 400 degrees. Peel the skins off the shallot and coat each in a bit of olive oil. Wrap them in tin

foil and roast for about 45 minutes. While this is happening, you can cook the ground sausage in a sauté pan over medium high heat for about eight minutes or until the sausage begins to brown. Strain the fat and set aside for later. While the shallots roast, chop the herbs and cut your tomatoes in half so that you’re ready to assemble the pasta when the time is right. When the shallots come out of the oven and are soft and golden brown, put them in the food processor and puree them with a bit of warm water and a touch more olive oil. At this point you are ready to put everything together. Start by heating a large sauté pan and putting the pasta into the boiling salted water, the pasta will need eight to ten minutes. Add the olive oil to the hot

pan and begin to crisp the ground sausage. When the sausage begins to brown, deglaze the pan with the white wine and allow it to reduce for one minute before adding the cream, butter, cheese and roasted shallot puree. Allow these ingredients to incorporate and reduce until a creamy sauce consistency is

achieved. Strain the pasta when ready and add to the dish along with the tomatoes and arugula. Toss in the final ingredients and allow them to simmer together in the cream sauce for another three minutes. Finish with the chopped herbs.
