Opening Night: Loving Loving is based on a true story from the 1950s and '60s yet it is as topical now as ever.

Hunter has never been better than in this year's Hamptons International Film Festival opener Strange Weather. Katherine Dieckmann’s eagerly awaited film is a portrait of an unconventional woman (Hunter) discovering what it takes to change her life mid-stream. A lyrical, emotionally rich drama, tracks a strong southern woman as she travels the Deep South with her best friend (Carrie Coon), looking for answers to the unanswerable. A story about how to be fully alive in the face of tragedy, about forgiveness, grace, redemption and the power of moving on. Strange Weather will screen Saturday at 7 PM at Southampton theater. survive and thrive despite it. The film follows the courtship and marriage of Mildred Jeter, a black woman, and Richard Loving, a white man. After eloping they are arrested and sentenced to prison in Virginia in 1958 because their interracial marriage violates the state’s anti-miscegenation laws. They eventually flee the state but five years later, still tortured by the treatment they endured, decide to fight back. They sue the state of Virginia in a series of proceedings leading to the Supreme Court’s unanimous decision in Loving vs. Virginia, which holds that laws prohibiting interracial marriage are unconstitutional. Joel Edgerton and Ruth Negga are brilliant as the Lovings, and an excellent supporting cast led by Michael Shannon gives authenticity and depth to the film. Nichols and Edgerton will be on hand for the festival. Loving will debut at 6:30 Friday evening at Guild Hall and a half hour later at East Hampton UA 1. R.M.

Logan And Carrie Catherine Holmes The Hamptons International Film Festival has evolved over its 24 years into an Oscar engine: its brain trust early on identifies films that will impress Academy voters and signs them up for the festival. The proof is in the pudding: seven of the last Best Picture winners screened at the HIFF. S a t u r d a y ’s c e n t e r p i e c e f i l m , Manchester By The Sea, is a legitimate Oscar contender and will surely secure a Best Picture nomination. The cast could be in line for some hardware

Manchester By The Sea, the Saturday Centerpiece Film, is written and directed by Kenneth Lonergan and centers on the story of a janitor in Boston, Lee Chandler, who just became sole guardian of his teenage nephew after the death of his older brother, Joe. Lee decides to return to his hometown where he cannot escape the past that crumbled his marriage. Manchester By The Sea, starring actors Casey Affleck, Kyle Chandler, with Lucas Hedges, and Kara Hayward will debut at Guild Hall at 5PM. This film will be released in

HIFF Centerpiece Film: 20th Century Women and passion of a great memory - but also the urgency and energy of three generations in the throes of momentous transition. Bening gives one of her very best performances as Dorothea, conveying with subtle yet tremendous emotional power through both her unconditional love for her son and her increasing bewilderment about the world she is watching him enter. Gerwig, Fanning, and Crudup all do outstanding work, creating complex, unique characters

HIFF To Honor Edward Norton

She is a unique actor, a critic’s darling who can play most any role with aplomb and authority. The new comedy-drama, 20th Century Women, Sunday’s centerpiece film at the HIFF, is a perfect vehicle for her, and the film will clearly be an important player at the upcoming Academy Awards.
Bening is no stranger to accolades, having earned two Golden Globes, two Screen Actors Guild awards and two Oscar nominations for her work in films like American Beauty, Being Julia, and The Kids Are All Right. 20th Century Women, written and directed by Mike Mills, shares the story of three Southern California women in the late 1970s as they explore love and freedom. Bening, Greta Gerwig, Elle Fanning, and Billy Crudup will be starring as the main characters. Mills expertly recreates the warmth
As an altar boy charged with killing a priest, Edward Norton earned an Oscar nomination in his very first feature film (Primal Fear, 1996). Two years later he turned in a chilling performance as Derek Vinyard, the neo-Nazi racist in American History X, earning another nomination. Norton has been doing it ever since, peaking with yet another nomination for his role in Birdman, which was featured in the 2014 HIFF. He is coming back to the festival again this year to accept the HIFF Lifetime Achievement Award. Norton is a philanthropist, producer, director, and has acted in films as diverse as Fight Club and The Grand Budapest Hotel. Edward Norton’s greatest project is his social funding site that supports grassroots philanthropy projects and has raised over $500 million. Nor ton will accept his award at a dinner held in his honor on Sunday. “Edward Nor ton is an incredibly accomplished actor and filmmaker, whose performances are both iconic and award winning. We are thrilled to have the opportunity to honor him this year at the Hamptons International Film Festival,” said HIFF Executive Director Anne Chaisson. Fashion Pays It Forward For Breast Cancer Research By Jessica Mackin Three leaders in New York fashion, Lafayette 148 New York, St. John, and Tadashi Shoji, will take part in the third annual “Pay It Forward,” a month long fundraiser to benefit the breast cancer research programs of the Samuel Waxman Cancer Research Foundation during breast cancer awareness month in October. While Lafayette 148 and St. John host by-invitation-only in-store fundraisers, Tadashi Shoji creates a limited-edition scarf in support of the SWCRF. The first event featured Lafayette 148 New York. The luxury brand hosted a fashion show and shopping event on September 28 at its SoHo concept store. to styling some of television’s most celebrated stars. The Fall 2016 fashion show was followed by wine and hors d’oeuvres. Ten percent of purchases made during the evening and for seven days following were donated to the SWCRF. This year marks St. John’s second
time hosting a “Pay It For ward” fashion and cocktail event to support the Waxman Foundation. The event will be held at their Fifth Avenue boutique tomorrow evening. A runway presentation of the fall collection, featuring some of the label’s signature knits and luxurious furs and accessories,
will be introduced by St. John’s Flagship Client Development Manager Gregory Mangia. Ten percent of sales during the event and for 10 days thereafter support the Waxman Foundation’s breast cancer research. “Pay it Forward” was launched in 2014 with Tadashi Shoji as the trailblazer. This October, Tadashi Shoji has created a silk scarf that is sprayed by colorful English Garden flowers. The $68 scarf will be sold during the entire month of October on the Tadashi Shoji website (www.tadashishoji.com) and in Tadashi Shoji stores. In addition, 25 percent of the proceeds from Tadashi Shoji retail sales during breast cancer awareness month will be donated to the fundraising initiative. The Waxman Foundation’s grantees have made great strides in breast cancer research, discovering potential new avenues for treatment that may lead to clinical drug trials. The foundation has partnered with the Triple-Negative Breast Cancer Foundation in funding the work of four renowned researchers collaborating on a project to make Triple-Negative Breast Cancer cells more responsive to hormonal treatment and reduce their ability to spread. The team of scientists at Mount Sinai includes Ming-Ming Zhou, Ph.D. and Samuel Waxman, M.D., founder and CEO of the Samuel Waxman Cancer Research Foundation. Virginia, resonates on a lot of levels. After last year’s debacle, the Academy is sure to give careful consideration to projects fronted by African-Americans, and Nate Parker has been working on this project for years.
HIFF: Where To Eat By Rick Murphy
You’re in a quandary: yes, the movies (excuse us, films) are great and you have nothing against popcorn and Bon Bons. You need real sustenance, and fast, or you might end up the star of Starving In The Hamptons: A Documentary. Here are a few places that have been around for most if not all of the 23 prior film fests – they know how to get you out in a hurry. It may not be Brothers or Deninos but we have a genuine NYC-style pizzeria right here in East Hampton. That would be Fierro’s (631-324-5751), right across the alley from Stop & Shop on Newtown Lane. Yeah, they’ve been there for the better part of four decades so theys dealt with a lotta you film types. There are a terrific variety of pies by the slice, hot and cold heroes, and a lot of stuff you wouldn’t expect, like gasp (!) healthy salads and wraps, and even Paninis. There are tables inside, or get it to go. Grab a slice and it’ll be finished by the time you walk to the box office and you can’t beat that. The epicenter for the HIFF crowd is, as always, John Papas Café (631-324-5400), in west end of the parking lot behind Main Street. There’s lots of seating, breakfast, lunch and dinner, to stay or take with you. Say hello to the celebs and try the Greek offerings, they are the real deal. Children of all ages are welcome, even film critics.
If you head north on Newtown Lane and turn left at the railroad tracks there’s a classic Italian “Pork” store awaiting with the kind of hero sandwiches we used to get in Queens. These are with authentic Italian heroes like the Villa Combo plus great pre-made salads (try the antipasto), prepared foods like lasagna (and, of course veggie lasagna) cold drinks, and great prices. Villa Italian Specialties (631-324-5110) also has a special hero each day that can be shared by two people, or maybe even three smallish leading men. Mary’s Marvelous (631-324-1055) just opened in its newest locale on Newtown Lane. Find all the favorites from their Amagansett home base, like smoothies and . . . well . . . smoothies. You’ll see a lot of nonathletic women dressed in workout garb but don’t worry, it isn’t an open casting call it just seems that way. If it’s bagels you want, Goldberg’s (100 Pantigo Place, 631-329-8300) east of East Hampton Village, is a treat, and also offers hot breakfast. In Sag Harbor The Corner Bar (631-725-9760) is right across the street from Bay Street Theatre. The burgers are legendary, the drinks flow, and the patrons are friendly. Just down the block is Conca D’Oro (631735-3167), across from the historic Sag Harbor movie theater. Just south, on Madison Street, sits Il Capuccino (631-725-2747), a sit down Italian restaurant that has been doing it for 50 years. They should make a movie about the garlic rolls – they are that good.
Manchester By The Sea Manchester By The Sea* Casey Affleck, the Affleck brother who can actually act, gets his due in this film written and directed by Kenneth Lonergan. Like Birth it was well received at Sundance. Loving* a movie about an interracial love affair written and directed by Jeff Nichols (Midnight Special) is another near certainty. Ruth Negga (Warcraft) and Joel Edgerton (Black Mass) get the lead roles. Lion* is a real sleeper. Brilliantly conceived and filmed, it’s about a boy who gets lost on the streets of Calcutta. He returns 25 years later to search for his family. Dev Patel (Slumdog Millionaire) and Rooney Mara (The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo) are said to be terrific. Billy Lynn’s Long Halftime is a war drama adapted from the Ben Fountain novel of the same name about an Iraq war hero honored at halftime at a Dallas Cowboys game who learns he still has to go back for more active duty. Two-time Oscar winner Ang Lee directs, so this film comes with potent Oscar pedigree, an important factor. Sully, in theaters now, has all the markings of a contender. Its director, Clint Eastwood, and its star, Tom Hanks, are both multiple Oscar winners, and everyone knows the story of the plane that landed in the Hudson River. La La Land* Two very hot actors,
Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling, team up in La La Land, about a struggling jazz musician. Young Harvard-educated Damien Chazelle (Whiplash) writes and directs. American Pastoral* Ewan Mcgregor’s directiral debut is an adaptation of the Pulitzer Prize winning novel. In the spirit of Hamilton, Nat Turner In Jerusalem, off Broadway at The New York Theatre Workshop, uses anachronistic rap music. Here, it breaks up the action, and drives the narrative, bringing Turner’s 1831 insurrection into a contemporary perspective. Exploring that slave revolt, in which 55 white people in Southampton County, Virginia, were killed, Nathan Alan Davis’ new play explores the antagonistic relationship between Turner and his lawyer, Thomas Gray. As the author of The Confessions of Nat Turner, Gray’s pamphlet, published shortly after Turner’s conviction and execution, was reportedly a truthful account of Turner’s actions. As explained in the play’s program, however, the veracity of Gray’s reportage has always been questionable. Gracefully and powerfully portrayed by Phillip James Brannon, Turner, a slave preacher and self-styled prophet, takes claim to the murders. Some of the people he killed were his owners. In Brannon’s hands, Turner is a movingly sympathetic character. His sole coconspirator, he claims, was God. It doesn’t take a blink of the eye to see the play’s implications about contemporary terrorism, which in the context of this play, makes for an eyeopening revelation. As Gray, Rowan Vickers accuses Turner of being delusional, a murderer for whom hanging is justice. Indeed, he is more of an accuser than a defender. But the guard, also portrayed by Vickers - a boyish looking, church going man, who shamefully admits to beating his wife - becomes empathic to Turner’s plight. That oppressed people will strike back is an insurmountable truth. Director Megan Sandberg-Zakian brings out the combative relationship between Gray and Turner. One a frustrated bureaucrat denies the existence of god, while the other, divinely magnetic, surrenders to a higher order. Only for the lawyer, execution is justice under the law. A Taste of Honey Ironically titled, A Taste of Honey, off Broadway at the Pearl Theatre, Shelagh Delaney’s 1950’s drama, is
relentlessly dark. From the coal-charred buildings of Manchester, England in the background, to the dreary flat where Jo lives with her mother (Harry Feiner, designer), this revival by Austin Pendleton presents us with a world from which there is no exit. Identified with the group of working class British playwrights, known as the angry young men, Delaney’s work voices the strangulating world Jo faces as a pregnant unwed teenager with a biracial child. Sadly, her story is not especially dated. As is his wont, Pendleton has gathered a strong ensemble with Rebekah Brockman as Jo, Rachel Botchan as her narcissistic, uncaring mother, Bradford Cover as her selfinterested beau, Ade Otukoya as the father of Jo’s child, and John Evans Reese as the gay boy who wants nothing more than to care for her. The only release from this tension is the British musical hall songs performed live in the midst of the living room action. Marie and Rosetta A simply wonderful evening of music, Marie and Rosetta off Broadway at Second Stage, is a hip gospel singing reunion with two R&B greats. Known for her influence on Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, and Jimmy Hendrix, among others, Sister Rosetta Tharpe was a radical thinker and an electric guitar swinging belter. Kecia Lewis brings her beautifully rich voice to the role. As her recruit, Marie, the allegedly innocent young woman who she takes on tour, Rebecca Naomi Jones portrays the sassy, incredibly gifted musician. Together they reprise Rosetta’s popular songs, “Didn’t Rain,” “I Want a Tall Skinny Papa,” and a rendition of “Lonesome Road” that will make you want to stand up and shout. Directed by Neil Pepe, it’s set in a funeral home (Riccardo Hernandez), the location where they first rehearsed, on the occasion when Marie gives her last respects to Rosetta. As written by George Brant, Marie, in effect, channels the story of their musical lives together. Just go for the music, and let it happen.

Cinnamon Crunchies Ingredients (1 dozen cookies) 1 c all purpose flour 1/4 c granulated sugar 1 tsp baking powder 1/4 lb butter (softened) 1 tbsp cinnamon 1 tsp vanilla extract 1 egg yolk
Method
Mix dry ingredients in a KitchenAid mixer with dough hook attachment. Add the egg and vanilla extract. Add the butter, a little at a time, until a ball of dough is formed. Roll 12 even sized balls and place them on a sheet tray with parchment paper. Bake at 350 degrees for 15 minutes.
