Today’s Birthday: Joan Crawford, 1904 Some movie goers will remember Joan Crawford as the spinster sister Blanche Hudson who was served a roasted rat in What Ever Happened To Baby Jane? The movie hit closer to home than audiences realized at the time: Bette Davis, who played the other sister, and Crawford “detested each other,” recalled the director, Robert Aldrich. Those who remember Crawford from her later years probably never saw her in her prime, when she was considered one of the world’s most beautiful women and an “A List” actress who was in great demand – and who demanded a lot of money. Lucille Fay LeSueur, born in Texas, was a dancer when a talent agent spotted her. A studio head complained her name sounded too much like “sewer” and Joan Crawford was born. She began appearing in movies – usually bit parts – but continued to dance, often competing and winning in contests. It all came together in Our Dancing Daughters when audiences, particularly females, fell in love with the budding star and identified with her. She married Douglas Fairbanks Jr. in 1927, a move many thought was career-motivated, and landed the leading role in The Jazz Singer the same year. She scored a major coup in 1945, earning the Best Actress Oscar for Mildred Pierce after Davis passed on the role and the director, Michael Curtiz, publicly demeaned her. Crawford’s life took another turn in 1955 when she married Alfred Steele, the President of Pepsi Cola. He became CEO during their marriage. When Steele died in 1959, she took his seat on the board of directors. Aldrich, after the amazing success of Baby Jane, cast Davis and Crawford again in Hush Hush Sweet Charlotte. This time the feud boiled over, Crawford became ill, she said, from the harassment Davis heaped on her. Crawford died in 1977; in her later years she was seldom seen in public because she didn’t like the way she looked in photographs. Even from her grave Crawford proved controversial: in November 1978, Christina Crawford, Joan’s daughter, published Mommie Dearest, a chilling recounting of Joan’s alleged cruelty towards her children.

CONTINUED FROM PAGE 12. Coming Soon Midnight Special (PG-13) Jeff Nichols IV has a knack for making well reviewed flicks (Mud, Hellion) that bomb at the box office. This one, about a father who goes on the lam with his weird son, turns interesting when we realize the boy has mysterious powers. Jaeden Lieberher, so good in St. Vincent, takes on a difficult role here and performs well. Michael Shannon

Now Playing Eye In The Sky (R) Helen Mirren is perfect as a UK officer in charge of a drone spying mission who unravels a terrorist plot and orders a preemptive bombing mission. Aaron Paul (Breaking Bad) co-stars as a pilot who will surely kill a young girl if he carries out his mission. Thus, we have a moral dilemma. Good films have been made with flimsier plots.

The Lobster * (R) The director Yorgos Lanthimose has fashioned a brilliantly offbeat film that is part Science Fiction/Fantasy and part Comedy/Cult. Colin Farrell lives in a world where man must either choose a mate in 45 days or be transformed into an animal. It’s offbeat to be sure, and it yearns to be a little bit of everything without focusing on a central theme, but it is wildly original and inventive. Rachel Weisz co-stars.

Fish Mobile Craft

Kids ages four and five are welcome to observe and then create a fish mobile at the South Fork Natural History Museum in Bridgehampton. This Saturday at 10:30 AM, learn some fascinating facts about fish; that they are animals with backbones, that they breathe through gills, that some can camouflage themselves to hide on the ocean floor, plus much more. Then, with the help of artist, educator, and craft maker Ruby Jackson, participants can create their own species of fish and make a fish mobile. Materials fee is $5.
