The Internet Cat Video Festival features the best of humorous cat cuteness on the Internet, from the Minneapolis Walker Art Center’s hugely-successful annual program for “feline fanatics” that drew 13,000 people to its outdoor screening space last summer. Broadway Reporting From

By Isa Goldberg

Wake up and smell the eau de toilette. She Loves Me, Jerry Bock’s and Sheldon Harnick’s musical confection is back at The Roundabout Theatre, Studio 54, and what a blissful evening of theater it is! Scott Ellis’ revival reminds us how endearing a frothy oldfashioned Broadway musical can be. With a book by Joe Masteroff, based on a play by Miklos Laszlo, the story is one we’ve seen in various incarnations, including the Tom Hanks/ Meg Ryan movie, You’ve Got Mail. Walking into Mr. Maraczek’s perfumerie, Amalia Balash (Laura Benanti) convinces a disgruntled customer to buy a music box, the invention of its day in the Budapest of 1934. Greeted by the proprietor, a stuffy old conservative, shrewdly portrayed by Byron Jennings, she steps into her new role. As her new friend, Jane Krakowski plays the supportive co-worker, and Gavin Creel surpasses himself as Krakowski’s charming, debonair suitor and a villain all along. Zachary Levi plays the romantic lead with an earnest sensibility. But it’s Laura Benanti who is in

great voice here. A classical soprano with a light comedic sensibility, she evokes a host of musical comedy stars, Barbara Cook among them. It’s Cook who created the role for the Broadway premiere in 1963. More than the foxy, albeit vulnerable burlesque star, Gypsy Rose Lee, (2008 Tony Award), Benanti’s Amalia is unabashed, strong willed, and impertinent when necessary. You won’t be able to eat “Vanilla Ice Cream” again without thinking of Amalia sitting on her bed, plaintively crying over her dish and her newfound love, while in beautiful song, of course. David Rockwell’s set in dizzying pastels and Jeff Mahshie’s period costumes, most especially flattering on Ms. Benanti, add to the treat. It’s escapism of a kind Broadway knows best, so don’t miss it! Take These Broken Wings Michelle Williams’ public image as a vulnerable volatile young woman belies the gift of an intensely dramatic actress. And nowhere has she demonstrated that more brilliantly than in David Harrower’s Blackbird, currently at The Belasco Theatre on

Broadway. Playing a young woman who confronts the man who sexually abused her when she was 12 years-old, Williams’ daring portrayal bloodies the mind’s eye. Forced to experience her sexuality at such a tender age, she identifies the act as the primal love experience - whether her rational self recognizes it that way, or not. As Una – an ironic name for a woman who can’t become a whole person – Williams captures the character’s deranged complexity and her confusion. When she finds Ray (Jeff Daniels) after 15 years, now in his late 50s, the desire to recreate those moments vies with her need to expel him from her being. Caught off guard by her

Their chemistry is explosive; and as directed by Joe Mantello, the production is a tense, emotionally exhausting psychodrama for the actors as well as the audience. Evoking pity and fear, it’s cathartic in the purest Aristotelian sense. “Disaster! On Broadway” Seth Rudetsky and Jack Plotnick have rescued every camp musical comedy joke they could from the so-called disaster movies of the 70s, and set it all to the disco style music that characterized the period. It is ludicrously silly, with a cast that would prick up anyone’s ears. Rachel York in an especially iconic role – bimbo and diva – along with Roger Bart as the greasy casino owner, Kerry Butler as the ingénue and Faith Prince, channeling Shelley Winters in The Poseidon Adventure, all give stand out performances, mostly by making fun of themselves. But the quintessential performance here is Jennifer Simard’s as a deadpan nun with a gambling habit – no pun intended. In the midst of these stock characters, Simard’s Titanic and unpredictable sense of comedy is simply sublime.

Independent Dining Homemade Veggie Burger

Ingredients (serves 6) 1/2 c whole garlic cloves 1/3 c olive oil 1 tbsp Dijon mustard 1 lb button mushrooms 2 large carrot (peeled and shredded on a box grater) 1 white onion (diced) 3 tbsp picked fresh thyme 2 tbsp white balsamic vinegar 2 heads of broccoli 1/2 c rolled oats (ground to a flour like consistency in food processor) 1 lemon

1 can of chickpeas (drained & rinsed) 1 head of celery (washed trimmed & diced) 1 c cooked brown rice 1 red pepper 1 yellow pepper diced 1 c vegetable stock 1 tbsp chili powder 1 tbsp ground cumin salt and pepper to your liking Method Begin by placing the garlic cloves

in a small pot with the olive oil. Let that simmer on low heat for about 45 minutes or until the garlic becomes soft and turns a light golden brown color. Begin peeling the vegetables you will be dicing, any peels or scraps can go in a small pot filled with two cups of water to make the vegetable stock. For the broccoli, take a sharp knife and gently run it over the florets basically shaving off the green tops of the broccoli floret then save them for later use. For the stalk of the broccoli, cut it into small pieces and give it a rough dice. When all the vegetables are processed, the garlic is roasted, and the oats are ground we can start cooking. Take two tbsp of the roasted garlic olive oil and begin to heat it over medium heat in a large sautĂŠ pan. Add the onion, celery, peppers and broccoli stalks to the pan and cook over medium heat until the onions become soft and translucent, seasoning as you go. Add in the rough chopped mushrooms, picked thyme, and seasoning. Cover for five minutes to allow the mushrooms to release some liquid. Stir occasionally. After five minutes, remove the lid and deglaze the pan with the white balsamic vinegar and the juice from half the lemon. Allow the liquid to reduce by half in the pan then drain the cooked vegetable mixture.

Add the liquid to the vegetable stock and set the cooked vegetables aside for a minute. Using some of the vegetable stock and some of the roasted garlic oil, make a homemade hummus. Use some as a binder in the veggie burger recipe and save the rest. Put the drained chickpeas, 1/4 cup of the vegetable stock, the zest of the lemon, as well as the juice from half of it, and three tablespoons of the garlic oil into the food processor and blend until smooth. You may need to add a little bit extra garlic oil or stock to achieve the consistency you want. Now you have all your ingredients ready. Put half of the cooked vegetable mixture in the food processor with three tbsp of the homemade hummus, 1/2 cup of rice, the Dijon mustard, the drained roasted garlic, and all of the ground oats. Pulse that mixture until a thick paste-like consistency is achieved. Fold in the rest of the cooked vegetables, 1/2 cup rice, the shaved carrots, and the tiny broccoli florets for texture. At this point you can portion and form your vegetable patties. Lay them out evenly on a tray lined with parchment paper and freeze the patties for an hour before you cook them. Cook them on the grill or in a skillet with just a little bit of oil. Toast a bun and garnish with your favorite burger sides and enjoy.
