East End Arts Gala

Independent/Annemare Davin

The East End Arts Gala was held this past Saturday night at East Wind in Wading River honoring Bank of America for its ongoing support of East End Arts in Riverhead. The guest keynote speaker was music legend and founder of the FOLD "Freak Out Let's Dance" Festival, Nile Rodgers. This iconic recipient of multiple Grammy Awards is bringing back last year's successful FOLD concert at Martha Clara Vineyard for three days, August 12, 13 and 14. On May 3 The American Heart Association’s 20th Annual Heart of the Hamptons Ball began celebrations with a kick-off party in New York City. Hosted by the Heart Ball's co-chairs Consuelo Vanderbilt Costin, Nicole Noonan, Randi Schatz and Tracy Stern, attendees included the Ball's honoree Jean Shafiroff, Barbara Poliwoda from the American Heart Association, Frederick Anderson, Montgomery Frazier, Lucia Hwong Gordon and R. Couri Hay. Midway through the event, Poliwoda thanked the co-chairs and the honorees and announced that they were hoping to raise $600,000 from this event and from the forthcoming gala on June 25. Shafiroff then told guests she was involved in the AHA because of her recently departed father, who "despite having a heart attack at 51 had survived until 94 in part due to good heart health." She encouraged everyone "to support the AHA continuing their good work."

Live Music

Music Festival Spring Series program provides a per fect snapshot of the development of music of the classical period at the Bridgehampton Presbyterian Church Saturday at 6 PM with a program of trios by three of the greats: Haydn, Mozart, and Schubert. Haydn’s early, cheery, “London” trio (named for the city in which it was written) sets a standard for the period. Mozart’s C major trio, with its crystalline beauty and elegant lines, perhaps best exemplifies the classical period, while Schubert’s E-flat major trio pushes towards romanticism with his grand, flowing melodies, and haunting and ultimately triumphant climax. Broadway Reporting From

(& Sometimes Off)

By Isa Goldberg

A feel good show with a fun cast, Waitress, is another country-style musical. Down home music seems like the trump suit for several new musicals this season on Broadway, which aim for something of an egalitarian bias. Based on the film by Adrienne Shelly, the story, with a crusty, feminist edge, revolves around a trio of quirky romantic relationships at Joe’s Pie Diner. Think Mystic Pizza, set against rural, more mundane Middle American life. Broadway favorite Jesse Mueller plays Jenna, the waitress whose pies hold the key to her OB/GYN’s heart (Drew Gehling). Wooing him with pies sparks a romantic entanglement that spurs Jenna to get rid of her vulgar abusive husband, Cal (Nick Cordero). In the background, the other two waitresses, Keala Settle as a hotheaded woman, and Kimiko Glenn as the meek, geeky one, heat up the romantic triangle or triangles depending on how you look at it. As a woman’s story, the plot has more than sugary fixings and they’re wedded to easy flowing songs by Sara Bareilles. A grand piano and on-stage band that just happen to appear in the midst of Joe’s Diner tell us we’re in story land. Fortunately, not everything here has an entirely predictable, literal ending. Scott Pask’s sets reveal a sense of openness and expanse that equate more with Jenna’s open heart than they do with the actual terrain of her life. Infused with light by designer Christopher Akerlind and fueled with a sense of urgency by Director Diane

Paulus, Waitress is lively entertainment with an ending that speaks to female entrepreneurship. Like many women’s businesses, it all starts around the kitchen table. In fact, you’ll leave the theater smelling the pies. 'Careful The Spell You Cast’ Adapted from novel to stage, Tuck Everlasting is a kind of coming of age story that bonds the quotidian with the eternal and everlasting. Based on Natalie Babbitt’s classic children’s novel, it’s actually a wonder ful introduction to the concept of death as a positive aspect of our (ongoing) lives. As you may recall, the Tuck family is painfully trapped in an endless existence -- indeed, in immortality. Claudia Shear’s and Tim Federle’s musical adaptation mines the lyrical style. Given that the subject is about the unmentionable, the production relies heavily on dance to tell the story. To that end, there is no finer director and choreographer than Casey Nicholaw, whose choreography of folk dance in the early scenes evolves into a beautiful ballet for the finale. What is remarkable here is 11-yearold Sarah Charles Lewis’ Broadway debut. As the central character, Winnie Foster, she exudes a vibrant presence. On stage throughout most of the play, Lewis is as natural and at ease as a seasoned pro, and there are a number of outstanding ones in this production -- most prominently, Carolee Carmello as Mae Tuck, Andrew Keenan-Bolger as her son, Jesse, and Terrence Mann as the Man in the Yellow Suit, otherwise

known as “the evil banana.” Set in the late 19th century, Gregg Barnes’ costumes create a starchy Victorian feel, without all the layers of frill. In a period so far away, who really knows exactly what the fashions looked like in the little American town of Treegap. Walt Spangler’s sets meld that supposed reality with the magical woodlands and wetlands. The show’s finer tunes (Chris Miller, music, and Nathan Tysen, lyrics) arrive in the second act, especially the ballads, “Everything’s Golden” and “Time.” It’s an appealing story, one that would be especially endearing to children. Booked Jesse Tyler Ferguson (Modern Family) is in a fury. An aspiring actor and the receptionist at a tony restaurant, in Fully Committed, Ferguson takes to

flipping roles as if he were flipping hot cakes. And he has so many of them to flip here; one weirder than the next, and all crowded into 90 toothsome minutes. Among them, Gwyneth Paltrow’s overly persistent high pitched assistant, a cranky senior citizen in search of an AARP discount, a top chef who behaves like a frat boy, the restaurant’s French host, his agent, his father, brother, so-called best friend, and ALL of them SIMULTANEOUSLY vying for his attention. P l a y w r i g h t B e c k y M o d e ’s monologue for one actor and a multitude of characters captures the gossip that surrounds high-end New York restaurants. Their signature flavor, “edible dirt,” sums it up. And director Jason Moore helps sustain the seamless, non-stop action. Indeed, Ferguson proves his place as one of America’s

Arbor

T h e n e w r e s t a u r a n t A r b o r, located at 240 Fort Pond Road in Montauk, will open this May. In the space formerly occupied by Ciao by the Beach, Arbor will offer a Mediterranean style menu with a casual chic vibe and promises to be a dynamic addition to the burgeoning Montauk dining scene. Owned by Apollo Global M a n a g e m e n t c o - f o u n d e r, M a r c Rowan, Arbor will be under the direction of Managing Director Steven Jauffrineau and Executive Chef Pierre Sudre. Jauffrineau brings his experience from the highly acclaimed Manhattan French bistro La Goulue and Shelter Island hot spot Sunset Beach. Sudre, who hails from a small village in the South of France, sharpened his culinary expertise with the Sofitel Hotel group in Miami, Houston and Los Angeles. The design of the restaurant is a collaboration between Alden Fenwick Design, Rowan and Jauffrineau. The style echoes that of a Mediterranean wine and beer bistro. The exterior space is highlighted by an arbor entrance and is surrounded by lush gardens and features a circular outdoor bar. The interior is open and airy with a fun relaxed energy. Neutral tones are prominent throughout the space with several custom items creating a polished look – such as the 30-foot bar and beautiful bar stools. The sunken dining area is surrounded by half walls to create a cozy dining atmosphere. The semiprivate dining area is flanked by the impressive wine cellar featuring floor to ceiling glass walls. The Mediterranean influenced menu created by Sudre features creative and delicious selections. Appetizers range from $11 - $17 and include: raw bar selections such as crab dijonaise and local clams; charcuterie and cheese plates featuring duck rillette and cured meats; salads such as cucumber and watermelon salad with sea bean, mint and yogurt and Bibb lettuce salad with roasted pumpkin

seeds and radishes; and small plates such as grilled merguez with braised lentil, bell peppers, soffrito and Dijon mustard and charbroiled oysters with blue cheese butter. Main plates range from $24 - $36 and include: Gambas skewer with braised fennel and lemon; and free-range chicken with roasted potatoes, lemon and basil. As well there will be a selection of homemade pizzas such as the roasted pear and prosciutto with arugula and mozzarella and the seafood pizza with crab, sun dried tomatoes, shredded mozzarella and caramelized onions. The beverage program at Arbor is an important element of the restaurant concept. The wine program will feature an impressive wines by the bottle list housed in the restaurant’s wine cellar in the main dining area. As well, a large emphasis will be placed on the wines by the glass. Roughly 15 – 20 wines by the glass will be offered at four price points: #1 A Steal $10, #2 Best Value $12, #3 The No Brainer $14 and #4 Treat Yourself $16. All wines by the glass selections will be available in a carafe as well as in a flight. The hallmark of the wine by the glass selection is the Enomatic wine dispensing system at the restaurant. This high technology system offers each wine at the appropriate temperature. A wine dispenser will be available in the semi-private dining area allowing diners to partake in self-service wine. The beer selection will also be impressive with 12 craft beers on tap, one being a custom Arbor brew crafted out of Crooked Ladder Brewing Company in Riverhead. Creative cocktail concoctions will round out the beverage program. Arbor will serve lunch and dinner 7 days in season. For further information contact Arbor at 631-238-5430.

Last Days In The Desert (PG-13) Another Jesus film, though mercifully one Mel Gibson isn’t involved with. In this one Jesus (Ewan McGregor) goes on a 40 day fast in the desert (of course). On the way he is confronted by – you guessed it, the Evil One himself, Beelzebub, the Devil. McGregor does a Patty Duke, playing both roles, which is surely the first time Christ and the Devil have suffered the ignominy of sharing an actor. They struggle over the meaning of life and yada yada yada. You can’t make this stuff up – well, actually they did.
