Big Flower has launched its brand and flagship store in East Hampton, located at 23 Newtown Lane. The store serves as the benchmark for future stores. The opening of the store commemorates the launch of the Big Flower clothing brand. The men’s collection is a full range of handmade, contemporary wear and accessories from breathable button-downs and unlined suiting, to ultra-soft t-shirts, joggers and summerweight sweaters. The debut womenswear capsule line consists of summer basics and necessities such as relaxed tunics and beach dresses. Big Flower is founded and designed by New York and Hamptons native Greg Ammon. Ammon and his fiancé, Stacy Volkov, have created the line together with Volkov leading design for the women’s collection. The name Big Flower stems from a modern day family crest created in the 90’s and used on t-shirts the Ammons gave to friends and family who visited in the summer. The crest, designed by Ammon’s mother, came about shortly after he was adopted from Ukraine and said his first English words “big flower”

when he saw a field of sunflowers in the Hamptons. The 1000 square foot store is designed around the idea of a traditional East Hampton cottage. Greg stated, “Some of my best childhood memories revolve around weekends in East Hampton. I wanted to create a brand where people, no matter who they are or where they may be, can get a feel for a weekend in the Hamptons, every day, all year round.” The flagship store will carry the full product offering of the men’s seasonal collection, lifestyle products and will exclusively carry the women’s capsule collection. A two part exhibit, “The Golden Age of Rock ‘N’ Roll” will be held at The Studio in East Hampton and The White Room Gallery in Bridgehampton this weekend with paintings and photographs of past and present music icons on display. Part one is at The Studio. The grand opening will take place on Saturday and features a book signing for Punks, Poets, and Provocateurs: New York City Bad Boys, 1977–1982 by Marcia Resnick from 5 to 6 PM. An opening reception will follow from 6 to 8 PM. This iconic photography exhibit’s narrative is drenched in imaginative storytelling, with glimpses of rare images of the top icons in the music industry, onstage and behind the scenes. The show features photographs by Chris Foster, Karen Bystedt, Marcia Resnick, David Gamble, Steven Pike, Susan Wood, Lori Pavsner and Steve Joester.

Jack Mitchell - "John Lennon & Yoko Ono"

The show will mark the debut of an exclusive limited edition from the estate of photographer Jack Mitchell. This limited edition is a 17” x 22” photographic enlarged print of a session proof sheet with John Lennon and Yoko Ono’s markings in grease pencil, indicating their selections for publication, made November 3, 1980. This was the only time The New York Times ever allowed a subject photo approval. Mitchell photographed Lennon and Ono on November 2, 1980 – and it turned out to be a historic session. It was the first time in five years that Lennon had been photographed professionally, and the last comprehensive photo session of his life. Tragically, just weeks later, Lennon was murdered. Par t two will be held at The White Room Gallery and will feature

paintings and photographs by Bonnie Lautenberg, EJ Camp, Laura Benjamin, Evad, Adoni Astrinakis, Steve Joester and Jason Poremba. An artists reception will be held on Sunday from 5 to 7 PM. The show runs through June 5. Using mixed media, Poremba and Joester capture the essence of rock idols. View EVAD’s glittering interpretation of Rock Stars, Lautenberg’s alluring and in your face photography, as well as Camp’s seductive, telling portraits of classic rockers. Who else would take candy wrappers and create striking portraits as Benjamin does with Michael Jackson and Mick Jagger? The gallery also introduces Astrinakis, showing three paintings from his series “The 27 Club,” featuring the works "Amy," "Kurt" and "Hendrix."

The exhibition runs tomorrow through June 16, with a reception on Saturday from 4 to 5:30 PM. Engel’s faces, figures and abstracts invite the viewer to enter their subconscious and allow his images to reveal themselves to their conscious mind. A master photographer, Nevins has increasingly over the years imposed or coaxed his personal vision out of nature. Gribin is a painter of distinct style. Her figures, seen in a space that moves from shallow to deep across the picture plan are emotionally loaded. Leahy-Miller is the natural inheritant of both NY and CA surfing and surf art. Leahy-Miller expresses the speed and flow of surfing via hand drawn 2D images laden with intense color that include stylized speed or motion

lines to illustrate the path and velocity a surfer takes across a wave. Hampton Hopper Kickstarter Launched May 2, the Hampton Hopper has kicked off a campaign to raise funds for a service expansion to benefit businesses, residents, and tourists within Montauk. The campaign can be found online at HamptonHopper.com/ kickstarter or by clicking on the “Kickstarter”section on the homepage menu. “We love the Hamptons. We hate traffic. For years, we have wondered why there isn’t a better way to get around during the day, or to go out at night without worrying who’s driving. So, in 2014, we decided to do something about it, and launched the Hampton Hopper,” described the campaign. Over the past two summers, the Hopper has provided weekend shuttle bus service to village centers and businesses between Sag Harbor and Montauk. This summer they want to launch the Montauk Loop to provide more frequent and expanded service exclusively within Montauk. Hoppers will run between designated stops and sponsoring businesses within Montauk at 40 minute intervals, making it easier than ever to get around town without having to worry about driving, parking, or calling a cab. Pricing is fixed. Riders can buy a single ride on the Montauk Loop for $7, or buy an unlimited daily pass for $15. Weekend passes ($35) and Season passes (as low as $99) are also available and valid for the whole Hopper system that runs from Montauk to Amagansett, East Hampton, and Sag Harbor. Rides may be purchased onboard or through the app. J.M.

Pristine Pools: Darvin’s ‘Real’ Job By Kitty Merrill

Talk about your local boy making good. A graduate of Springs Elementary School and East Hampton High School, Greg Darvin worked cleaning pools during the summers as a teenager. In college while studying economics and finance, he started his own pool company. After graduation from SUNY Albany, he recalled, “I knew I didn’t want to work on Wall Street.” He continued his pool work for a couple of post grad years, making bank during the summer and traveling during the winter. “I always thought I’d get a real

job,” he said. But, eventually, Darvin decided to embrace what he’d built, and since its founding in the 90s Pristine Pools has become a leader in the local luxury pool industry. At first his focus was on service and maintenance, but over the years, Darvin learned about pool design “organically.” His designs and the work of Pristine Pools have been featured in such publications as Architectural Digest, Wall Street Journal, New York Times, New York Post, Newsday and Better Homes & Gardens’ Garden, Deck and Landscape. Pristine has designed and installed pools, spas, waterscaping and hardscaping on

many multimillion-dollar homes for marquee clients in the business and entertainment industries. Scroll through the company website, swimpristinepools.com, and one is confronted with an array of breathtaking designs. Waterfalls and fountains, spas separated from the traditional pool with “invisible” walls, a hot tub built in a gazebo overlooking a spacious pool, pools with astounding views of adjacent water bodies – they look like water floating on water. Darvin wouldn’t say how much the pools cost or what his most expensive design has been. He prefers to postpone budget talks with clients, too. At the initial consultation, he said, “I don’t want to design to a preconceived notion. I don’t want to put numbers to things.” Instead, he prefers to meet with clients to discuss size, shape, and dimensions. From there he’ll make a first draft design, with budget and finish materials the topic of a second discussion. With that first draft, Darvin seeks maximum input from clients. “I tell them I don’t have ego attached to my design, I want them to be honest and critical.” Changes to the construction industry over the years, not to mention the advent of text, email, easy call conferencing and myriad manners of instant communication have made sharing design concepts “so instantaneous . . . it’s easy to communicate with three or four people at a time,” Darvin pointed out. Strides in technology also allow for “almost photo quality images” available during the design phase. Those advances allow for maximum input and feedback from clients, which is paramount to Darvin. “I try to get as much input Continued on page D-12.

to the 6 PM cocktail reception are $150. Peter Ambrose will cater the event. The Showhouse will be open to the public on Sunday and Monday from 10 AM to 4 PM. There is a $10 suggested donation and children are free.

Decorators-Designers-Dealers The 24th annual DecoratorsDesigners-Dealers Sale and Auction Benefit Gala (D-D-D), to benefit the Southampton Fresh Air Home’s 115th year of camp for physically challenged children, is a highly anticipated fundraising party on June 4. The D-D-D features live, silent and wine auctions and an extraordinary home furnishings and antiques sale. The fabulous furniture sale showcases choice and rare antiques, gently used and new home furnishings -- designer furniture, lamps, paintings, framed prints, fabrics, decorative accessories and much more. For over two decades, guests have lined up hours in advance to have first choice of these extraordinary treasures, beautifully staged by the design team, and offered at amazing prices. The D-D-D will take place at the Southampton Fresh Air Home, starting with a 5 PM preview for benefactor patrons. The event closes at 8:30 PM. Tickets start at $250 per person for 6 PM entry. For information and reservations call 631-283-5847. Hamptons Contemporary Art fair guru Rick Friedman will debut Hamptons Contemporary, a luxury living design and décor fair, at the Southampton Elks Fairgrounds on June 3 through June 5,

bringing the first of its kind to the Hamptons. Nine years after creating ArtHamptons, Friedman has turned his focus to design. As he did with ArtHamptons, Friedman plans once again to set the standard for fairs celebrating the form and function of modern luxury living with Hamptons Contemporary. Explaining his transition, Friedman said, “After I sold the fine art fairs, I realized that I may have been too myopic in defining art as what was on the walls. I realized that it was about beauty meeting inspiration and I took a higher level of abstraction, wherein the canvas is the entire home and the paint is defined as all the elements and product categories that comprise and beautify the home. Hamptons Contemporary showcases that wider vision.” The 40,000 square foot Hamptons Contemporary pavilion will showcase Friedman’s vision with over 150 exhibitors. From world recognized architects to celebrated interior decorators, from luxury furniture and appliance manufacturers to one-of-a-kind design artisans, from state-of-the-art pool and landscape designers to home theater experts, Hamptons Contemporary will celebrate every aspect of luxury home décor and design, both interior and exterior. The Opening Night VIP Reception will benefit the ARF and the Southampton Education Foundation. SEF provides third-party financial support for scholarships and other valuable programs for the students and educators in the Southampton community. When Your House Is A Hollywood Star

By Miles X. Logan

was occasionally entertained in the house by his cousin Susannah Ingersoll and it became the inspiration for his Gothic novel. Unfortunately the Ingersolls remodeled the house and the gables were removed. That created a quandary for Universal Pictures, which acquired the rights to Hawthorne’s novel. A facade of the house was constructed on a studio back lot. As the filming intensified, three different studios were needed to recreate interiors of the house. Sanders and Price never stepped foot in the real thing. Just like actors, some houses are camera friendly. Consider

the Ennis House in Los Angeles. The Frank Lloyd Wright classic has been featured in a half dozen films including Blade Runner (1982), House on the Haunted Hill and many others. This stunning futuristic house has numerous TV shows and commercials as well as movies on its resume. One of the most famous scenes of all time was filmed in the “Beverly House,” in Los Angeles that was once owned by William Randolph Hearst. Once again an actor played second fiddle – not only to the house, but to a horse: a horse head, to be exact. That would be the scene in The Godfather where the movie Renoir, Pierre-Auguste. Luncheon of the Boating Party. Phillips Collection,Washington D.C.

Imagine what George Sanders and Vincent Price felt like when they found out a house was replacing their names on the movie marquee. Actually, it made perfect sense: The House Of Seven Gables, a literary masterpiece written by Nathaniel Hawthorne, had a huge following. Set in the mid 1850s, Hawthorne used a colonial mansion in Salem, Massacuttsetts as his inspiration. The house dates back to 1668 and was originally known as the Turner Mansion. Alas, John Turner III lost the family fortune and the Ingersoll family acquired the house. A relative, Nathaniel Hawthorne

producer Jack Wolz awakens to find an uninvited guest under his satin sheets. The house showed up again years later in The Bodyguard starring Whitney Houston and Kevin Costner. It was also featured in Into The Night and Topaz. Closer to home, movie buffs may remember Jack Nicholson and Diane Keaton frolicking on the beach in the 2003 classic Something’s Gotta Give. The spectacular oceanfront Southampton estate, located at 576 Meadow Lane, was later sold for $41 million to Jimmy Tisch, CEO of Loews Corp. Eternal Sunshine Of A Spotless Mind (2004), starring Jim Carrey and Kate Winslet, was filmed in Michael Kennedy’s oceanfront house in Wainscott. The scene of Woody Allen chasing the lobster through the kitchen in Annie Hall was filmed at the Rattray summer house on Cranberry Hole Road in Amagansett. Then there was Pollock starring Ed Harris and Marcia Gay Harden. It was filmed in . . . duh, the Pollock House on Springs Fireplace Road. Ditto Grey Gardens, the awardwinning full-length documentary filmed by Albert and David Maysles at an overgrown and rundown private home . . . called Grey Gardens. Sag Harborites remember Alan Alda taking over Main Street to shoot Sweet Liberty in 1986. Alda used a number of locals as extras – in fact, if you are local it might be fun to rent the film and see how many faces look familiar. Sometimes a house can be an integral part of the movie without even being in the movie. The house at 112 Ocean Avenue in Amityville where Ronald DeFeo Jr. killed six family members in 1974 is perhaps the best-known haunted house in the world. Three movies have been made of the Amityville Horror massacre – and all three were filmed in Toms River, NJ at house converted to look like the gambrel style original in Amityville. Some homeowners who let film companies use their house – or rented it to them – are sorry they ever did. The Goonies featured a house in Astoria, Oregon. The 1985 cult classic recently enjoyed a 30-year anniversary and a remake, but legions of fans have come to the house over the years -- thousands, complained owner Sandi Preston. She has covered the entire side of the house that faces a public road with blue tarps and put up a sign informing fans visitors are not welcome.

Longtime innkeepers Liz and Eric Brodar, previous owners of an award winning inn in Kennebunk, Maine, scoured the Hamptons looking for the perfect property to make their own. The search led them to a beautiful B&B located in Water Mill. The location of the White Fences Inn was ideal. Close to beaches, wineries and train and Jitney stops. The property

Your House: Headaches And Solutions By Emily Toy

In a lot of ways, it’s a pinnacle of the American Dream. You get married, get a dog, land a great job, have the two kids, and finally, buy your dream home. For many, owning a home is the biggest investment one will make in a lifetime. It’s also one of the biggest burdens one will ever have to carry. Homeownership is a huge responsibility, one that goes far beyond just paying bills on time and deciding what color to paint the walls. There are dozens of little details necessary for homeownership, and for the most part, they’re not pretty. Everything from installing the required fencing for a pool, to making sure the dimensions for that storage shed in the back corner of your property are correct are crucial elements that can be expensive and a headache if not addressed in a timely and proper fashion. Septic systems are another big problem area that can cost thousands if not taken care of. Hampton Septic Services, a wastewater management company based in East Hampton, opined that when it comes to septic systems, most homeowners take the “out of sight out of mind” approach. HSS recommends getting a typical septic system pumped every two to three years, with pumping becoming more frequent if there’s a garbage disposal on the property or if the house is close to a body of water, if the system is small, or if it’s more than 10 years old. And as always, refrain from flushing feminine hygiene products, harsh chemicals, paint, solvents, baby or personal wipes, or any other dense waste. Got questions? Call HSS at 631-267-7515. Another aspect of homeownership that can cause headaches for homeowners includes the delicate art of proper fencing. Fences are required for specific

things surrounding specific areas of a property. The big one here is swimming pools. According to the Division of Code Enforcement for New York State, the barrier must completely surround the swimming pool and must obstruct access to the swimming pool and the barrier must be at least four feet high. There are other, stipulations for swimming pool fencing that can be specific to individual towns. New Yorkers can check www.dos.ny.gov/dcea/pools. htm\ for more information and visit their town’s websites. Have pesky neighbors and want to add a fence? Obtaining a permit for installing a fence in these parts is $35. To get a permit, the homeowner must have a residential fence permit application and a copy of a survey map, with proposed fence location illustrated. In most cases, these permits can be obtained from the building department at your local town hall. Most of the same goes for installing a storage shed. Applications are usually available online via your town’s website or also within the building department at your town’s respective town hall. Got all your ducks in a row and ready to build? Be sure to check out Above All Fence located in East Islip (631-224-7905) and in Center Moriches (631-878-7778). They have dozens of options for wood, steel, or plastic fencing. And what’s more, they do storage sheds, too! Want something based a bit more local? East End Decks (631329-7150) serves East Hampton and Southampton and East Hampton Fence & Gate (631-3245941) specializes in installing and designing your biggest fencing fantasies. Before we move into the actual dream home of yours, there’s another area of the great outdoors that can penetrate your property in the worst possible way. Yup, you

guessed it. Pest control, in a lot of ways, can be the most aggravating aspect of home ownership. Between the deer, the mosquitoes, the ticks, and other annoying insects, there are plenty of ways your home could be a huge bullseye for problems. Want to avoid, or already got pests? There are plenty of local, reliable options that can keep your pest problems at bay. Call Nardy Pest Control (631-726-4777) and East End Tick and Mosquito Control. The latter has three locations: Southampton (631-287-9700), East Hampton (631-324-9700), and Southold (631-765-9700). “Don’t live in fear of the deer.” The Deer Fence (631-627-4084) specializes in keeping our furry friends out of your yard and away from your flowers. Let us now move to the inside of the happy home you own. In the winter, it’s all about keeping that house warm (at least warm enough so the pipes don’t

CONTINUED FROM PAGE D-4 as possible to translate ideas into something feasible and functional.” Darvin’s knowledge of the local environment is key, when it comes to “hardscaping” -- the stonework surrounding a pool. “I get most excited about the finish details. What really makes something more special is use of finish materials, tiles and stones.” But not all stones will survive the East End climate. There’s a limited pallet of materials that do well in the salt air and winter weather. Customers could browse a showroom in Manhattan and see materials from all over the world, but they might not survive our winters and sea air. It’s “huge” to know what will work well and endure in The Hamptons, according to Darvin.

freeze, and then ultimately, burst) and in the summer it’s about keeping that house cool (at least so the beads you’re sweating are trickling down your face not pouring). The East End offers dozens of options with regard to fuel and air conditioning experts. East End Fuel’s (631-329-9344) been doing it for decades, as has Quogue Sinclair Fuel, Inc. (631-728-1066). Kolb Mechanical Corporation, located in Mattituck, is another heating and air conditioning specialist. Call them at 631-298-5527. Got other worries regarding your home? We got you covered. Our Business and Service Directory offers dozens of options each and every week sure to meet whatever need you may have. House is fine, but don’t have time to tidy it up? No worries. There are plenty of house cleaners offering services here on the East End. Because remember, a clean home is a happy home.

In 2004, Pristine Pools launched a new division of the business specializing in stonework design, quality installation and consistent maintenance of waterscapes and hardscape stonework for indoor and outdoor areas. They specialize in natural and modern waterfalls, waterscaping such as ponds and fountains, outdoor fireplaces and kitchens, patios in all shapes, sizes, and materials, and retaining walls. The expanded services provides clients with a comprehensive plan for creating their pool, spa, patio, outdoor fireplace and other exterior entertaining areas. And when it’s time for him to entertain, or enjoy stolen summer relaxation, does the local boy kick back poolside? “I don’t have a pool, but I will someday,” Darvin confessed. For now, he said, “I like the beach.”

How Does Your

GARDEN

GROW?

Making The Cut

So you’ve got a great garden and you want to bring some of those fabulous flowers inside, aye? The fine ar t of cutting and arranging flowers is something non-green thumbs pay good money for. But you don’t have to, as there are dozens of ways (some are even homemade!) to keep your buds looking beautiful. Add a floral preservative such as Floralife Crystal Clear to a clean vase and fill half way with tepid water. You can make your own with a teaspoon of sugar, a teaspoon of bleach, two

teaspoons of lemon juice, and a quart of lukewarm water. Don’t use any floral preservative on tropical flowers. Always re-cut fresh flowers on an angle before you put them in fresh water. Avoid cutting with scissors or clippers that pinch the stalks. A sharp knife is best unless cutting large branches. Keep the flowers out of direct sunlight and heat. Change the water in vases daily if possible. To hold flowers for a few days, put them in a container of water in a cool, dark place. Pop ‘em in the fridge to slow the maturing process. Allow a

couple days for tight buds to open. To hasten opening, place stems in warm water in a warm place with good light.

Orchid Care Many green thumbs have trouble with one specific flower: the orchid. This week’s gardening tip comes from the fine folks at Wittendale’s in East Hampton. Orchids require a moist medium with exceptional drainage. Your orchid may be planted in bark chips or sphagnum moss. Provide a thorough and even watering when bark or moss becomes fairly dry (about once a week). If there is a top covering of moss you can water through it. Make sure the pot drains thoroughly before placing it back in saucer. Orchids require a location with bright light, but not direct sun. Use of fertilizer that is specifically for an orchid is best, but an all-purpose

house plant food is ok. Got questions? Call up Wittendale’s at 631-324-7160 or pop by their location at 89 Newtown Lane.

DriverOnTap

Paid for by East Hampton Town Republican Committee

Launching in the Hamptons for the 2016 season is a new app that is just what the Hamptons has been waiting for – a designated driver service in your own car. DriverOnTap (www. driverontap.com) is guaranteed to make Hampton roads safer this summer. Feel free to sip all the rosé you want, with DriverOnTap you can still cruise around in your car without getting behind the wheel. The brainchild of Alex Riguardi and Jose Ramirez, DriverOnTap was created to simply fulfill a need for people who want to be responsible and keep the roads safe. A huge appeal of the service is using your own vehicle – it’s greener, more convenient and more comfortable. Ramirez and Riguardi set their sights on the Hamptons for 2016 identifying a need for a chauffer for hire type service. It’s pretty simple – download the app and then tap for a driver. The app will provide an estimate of cost based on the distance of the trip. The driver will meet you at your desired location and drive you home in your own car. And you wake up in the morning with your car safe and sound in your driveway. Fees begin at $35 for a trip and increase based on amount of time for the trip. DriverOnTap Hamptons will ser vice Southampton to Montauk, with an added option of trips to and from Manhattan. All drivers are screened, licensed and fully insured. Customers are provided with access to their driver’s name, contact info and ETA. Reviews are encouraged as they are essential in maintaining high quality standards. The Hamptons and North Fork. In fact, they’ve been cage-free since the beginning of the year. Hampton Coffee is locally one of the first to make the switch. According to The Humane Society of the United States, which has been campaigning for restaurants to use more humane food sources, the big chains like Starbucks and Panera won’t be serving cage-free eggs until 2020. Dunkin’ Donuts, which has been opening up new locations on the East End in recent years, competing with local businesses, isn’t changing until at least 2025, according to their research. “For us at Hampton Coffee Company, making the switch to cagefree eggs is not only the right thing to do morally, but it also will ensure that the products we serve our customers continue to remain the top quality,” said Hampton Coffee’s Catering Manager Samantha Southard. “The fact that our eggs come from cage-free chickens means that each egg is code stamped and can be tracked directly back to the farm it came from. This is the same standard we practice when we deal directly with the coffee bean farmers that provide the beans that are ultimately roasted and blended, by us, to make the delicious coffee our customers love.”

Studies show that cage-free chickens experience less stress since they can roost and socialize freely, participate in their usual chicken behaviors and pecking orders, and lay their eggs in dark, quiet nests. The eggs that Hampton Coffee Company is purchasing are gathered directly from those nests, placed into a cooler, and then farm coded and processed. “Being that we are completely cagefree, this means that when you stop into any of our four local cafés to enjoy your Hampton Coffee Company breakfast favorites, like omelets, breakfast Panini,

and authentic Mexican breakfasts, you are being served eggs that have come from happy and humanely-treated chickens,” said company co-owner Jason Belkin. Belkin says they are absorbing the increased costs of using cage-free eggs so that their customers can enjoy the better eggs without having to pay more for their breakfast at Hampton Coffee. Hampton Coffee Company features estate-grown coffee hand-roasted by their own Roastmaster at their Southampton Coffee Roastery and prepared by professional baristas. In addition to their freshly-roasted coffee and expertly-made espresso, Hampton Coffee Company features muffins, croissants, their famous scones, cinnamon rolls, and cookies all freshly baked each morning on the premises at each café; a complete lunch menu featuring homemade soups, fresh salads, and sandwiches and Panini; and a variety of delicious housemade desserts.
