What are some of your favorite summer dishes? I never get tired of chilled melon soup. I love a salad of tomatoes, corn and a few olives with a bright vinaigrette. Grilled Hanger steak with a salsa made from farm stand chilies. A raspberry “fool." Drinks with watermelon ice cubes. Possibilities, endless.
Tell us a little about New Taste of the Upper West Side: It is a fantastic event I am looking forward to co-hosting with my buddy Anne Burrell! We are hosting a brand new event this year all about beachy chic surf & turf fare, and who doesn’t love that? This two day food festival is so extraordinar y because not only does it bring together the very best Upper West Side chefs and restaurants under one tent, but it brings together the community and really gives back. All net proceeds are donated to the local community for neighborhood improvement and beautification projects.

When a handsome reporter shows up at her Chicago hotel room, this anything-butdiva-like diva is forced to grapple with every aspect of her life: her less-thanpassionate marriage, her child, her ambition, her weight, and the price she must pay in this most demanding and irrational art form. Will Margaret succeed in mastering her career, men, and her own self doubt to release the star within? Visit www.baystreet.org.

Surf’s Up - Surfing As Art Blair Seagram’s 09.01.08 Trailer Park
The month of June will feature East End artists exhibiting different forms of surfing art in the Quogue Library Art Gallery in “Surf’s Up,” surfing as art in various media. An opening reception with slide show and lecture will be held Saturday, June 11, from 3 to 4:30 PM. Fine art photographer and Sag Harbor resident Blair Seagram uses a panoramic technique that started with landscapes and cityscapes and in 2008 began to focus on surfers. According to the artist, “The surfing panoramas present a sequential timeline, recognizable to the viewer as one synchronous whole.” Lutha Leahy-Miller, from East Quogue, will display Japanese ink drawings of surfers. Leahy-Miller has lived, worked, studied, and surfed in Hawaii, Mexico, the Caribbean, California, France, and the East End. “I try to express the speed and flow of surfing in my artwork as best I am able via graphic, hand-drawn Independent/Barbara Chan images laden with intense color.” Greg Miller’s Freedom Riders. Greg Miller creates one-of-akind, hand-painted and collaged works rendered on vintage, recycled surfboards. Inspired by iconic Pop Art imagery of the 1960s and ’70s, Miller’s work is featured in many private collections, as well as Sag Harbor’s “Surfari Crossroads” art gallery. The artist believes that the recycling of retired boards gives new life and a new story to boards “infused with the energies and passions of their riders.” In these artworks, “The surfboard becomes canvas, palimpsest and metaphor, evoking a distinct energy and flow.” Born in California and an avid surfer, Miller recently moved to East Hampton. Kurt Rist grew up surfing in Southampton and began chasing big waves in the winter months, traveling to such places as Ireland, Mexico, Hawaii and California. He runs his own surf school, Hamptons Surf Co., in the summer. Rist will give a talk about surfing accompanied by a slide show on June 11 at the Library. Lulie Morrisey and Doreen Ceglia are chairs of this show, which will be on view through June 28.

Broadway Reporting From
(& Sometimes Off)
By Isa Goldberg
From the Eurotrash techno music by Duncan Sheik and the designer costumes by Katrina Lindsay, to the extraordinar y visuals - including a nearly naked Benjamin Walker - American Psycho on Broadway is no mere spectacle. It is, rather, an explosively gory, high fashion frenzy. More than the gore – there’s more blood on the stage than Lady Macbeth could conjure – the production delves into the psychopathology of the social class that was groomed on Reaganomics. Set in the late ‘80s, the play portrays a social climate so corrupt, that “Things rank and gross in nature possess it merely.” Indeed, The Bard wrote of a similarly greedy social milieu. The musical, with Benjamin Walker
★
as Patrick Bateman the prince of Wall Street, paints the central character in a less satirical light than the Bateman in Ellis’ novel. Still, a self confessed murderer, he loathes his job, his life, and his fiancée, not to mention his colleagues. With a book by Roberto AguirreSacasa (Spider-Man Turn Off the Dark), sets by Es Devlin and Video Designs by Finn Ross, the production generates a kind of Marvel Comics freakishness. And Lynne Page’s choreography revealing poseurs swinging from the top of the social ladder and a buzz saw wielding Bateman, are outrageous. Brilliantly helmed by Rupert Goold, the production, more than the sum of its designs, is a frightening gaze into the American zeitgeist – its past and its all too threatening future.

Another Epic Like its title, Shuffle Along, Or The Making of the Musical Sensation of 1921 and All That Followed is an expansive journey into the history of African American theater. Written by George C. Wolfe, it celebrates the original work by F.E. Miller and Aubrey Lyles with songs by Noble Sissle and Eubie Blake. Portraying F.E. Miller, Brian Stokes Mitchell is stern, yet easy going. Billy Porter as Aubrey Lyles surpasses the aplomb of his Tony Award winning performance in Kinky Boots. The man simply cannot be stopped! And Joshua Henry and Brandon Victor Dixon feel just as symbiotic as the musical duo, Sissle and Blake, whom they portray. Another classic of the American theater, Audra McDonald, portrays Lottie Gee, the first African American ingénue to play a lead role in a Broadway musical. McDonald fills Gee’s shoes and the songs she made famous, like “I’m Just Wild About Harry” and “Love Will Find a Way,”

so naturally, you’ll fall in love with her natural grace and gumption, all over again. S a v i o n G l o v e r ’s s i g n a t u r e choreography, rich in energy and humor, captures the style of tap that was popular then. And Ann Roth’s costumes, at least for the women, burst out with color and pizzazz. Exquisite sets by Santo Loquasto. It’s an extraordinary creative team that brings the Harlem Renaissance in musical theater to life in an invigorating, surprisingly informative way. Song And Dance “Once a song and dance man, always a song and dance man.” James Cagney said that, and Robert Creighton, who portrays him in Cagney at the Westside Theatre Off Broadway, proves it. Not only does Creighton possess an incredible resemblance to Cagney, he’s also a tap dancing maniac, flipping around the stage like he’s out of control. Creighton, who also wrote the music and lyrics with Christopher McGovern, is a wonder. And this show, book by Peter Colley, about the Hollywood icon we all loved and feared is illuminating. A fascinating portrait about a tough minded and sensitive man who climbed his way up from poverty.
