YOU And ME

Boasting four and a half years shooting 50 interviews and 500 hours of footage across two continents, YOU and ME has already inspired audiences in Australia and New Zealand. Now, US audiences have the chance to be uplifted by the incredible on screen and behind the scenes story. YOU and ME heralds the feature filmmaking debut of young American filmmakers Taylor Montemarano and Lorenzo DeCampos, who started shooting the documentary while still at Quinnipiac University. Such was their belief in the power of the story, they self-funded both filming and travel. A chance introduction brought Michael Lawrence, the producer behind Australian box office hit Bra Boys

The Forgotten Woman At Bay Street By Jessica Mackin Let me start by declaring my love for the world premiere of The Forgotten Woman, a hilarious hit, that everyone should see at Bay Street Theater in Sag Harbor while it's running. The new play is written by Jonathan Tolins, who wrote Buyer & Cellar, a story about Barbara Streisand's basement, and one of the most refreshingly funny plays I've ever had the pleasure of seeing. The Forgotten Woman lives up to the Buyer & Cellar reputation, closing out last Thursday night's performance with a standing ovation. At the heart of the play, directed by Noah Himmelstein, is an unrequited love story between gifted soprano, Margaret Meier, played by Ashlie A t k i n s o n ( S t e v e , Wo l f o f Wa l l Street), and Darren Goldstein ("The Affair," "Limitless"), who plays Steve, a handsome Chicago newspaper reporter from Margaret's past. The audience quickly learns that she had a crush on him when they both performed in their high school production of Hello, Dolly! Darren has been assigned to write a

feature about Margaret's career. As an opera critic he is considered unqualified in the eyes of Margaret's husband and voice coach, Rudolph, played by Robert Stanton (The Coast of Utopia, Mary Stuart), and agent Erick, played by Mark Junek ("The Outs," Viral Beauty). He is an entertainment writer by profession who usually covers Oprah, not opera. He tells the gang he has been assigned this story because of cutbacks at the newspaper (Something this author understands, i.e. writing theatre reviews with little theatrical background. But I, like Goldstein's character, promise not to do a hatchet job.) The story lets the audience in on the intricacies of the relationships between the Margaret and the rest of the characters. The anything-but-divalike diva is forced to grapple with every aspect of her life: her less-thanpassionate marriage to Rudolph, her relationship with her daughter, her ambition, her self esteem related to her weight, and the price she must pay in a most demanding and irrational art form.

The top notch cast, including Jordan, played by Justin Mark ("Gotham," Last of the Boys), the nosey yet endearing bellman at the hotel where the play is set, gives the audience a lot to laugh about throughout the production. The balance between the characters keeps the audience engaged while they poke fun of, yet still show a great deal of admiration towards, the one thing they all have in common, the opera. The Forgotten Woman runs through Sunday. Visit www.baystreet.org for tickets.

Acting With Alec

A few slots remain to study with award-winning actor Alec Baldwin and Michael Chekhov International Association master teacher Bethany Caputo in a twoday Master Class in Acting, July 11 and 12, as part of the Southampton Theatre Conference at the Southampton Graduate Arts campus at Stony Brook Southampton. There is a limit of 16 in the workshop and a video audition is required. Auditions will be by submission of a reel link or a two-minute contemporar y audition, monologue or two-person scene, comedy or drama, via Vimeo. The cost of the twoday workshop/master class is $550. More information and an application form are available at www.stonybrook. edu/theatreconf. The two-day master class focusing on technique and its application to monologue and scene work begins on Monday, July 11. On Tuesday, July 12, Alec Baldwin joins Caputo in a scene and monologue intensive integrating some of the tools explored in the preceding day’s session. Other offerings in the 2016 Southampton Theatre Conference include workshops in playwriting with Lucas Hnath (“The Christians,” “Red Speedo”) and Stephen Adly Guirgis (2015 Pulitzer Prize, “Between Riverside and Crazy”). Broadway Reporting From

By Isa Goldberg

Writing straight-shooting dialogue and a clearly focused plot is Dominique Morisseau’s masterful distinction. In Skeleton Crew, the final play in her Detroit Trilogy, currently Off Broadway at The Atlantic Theatre Company, we meet the workers in a Detroit auto stamping plant around 2008. As the play begins, we hear news reports about the fires that burned through the city in the ‘60s, and we are posed with the question, “What’s happened since?” Directed by Ruben Santiago-Hudson with a true sense of urgency, the play connects the emotional lives of these blue-color workers – each of whom are African American – to the sociopolitical implications that prevail when people lose their jobs, their homes, their hopes, and their identities. In this well-knit ensemble, Lynda Gravatt (Faye), the oldest worker in the plant, delivers a stand out portrayal as the kingpin turned victim in an obvious, inhumane corporate plot. Wendell B. Franklin as the plant supervisor, pitted between management and his own people, portrays the staggering ambiguity and uncertainty that befalls them all. Their buddies, played by Jason Dirden and Nikiya Mathis, are equally convincing. In contrast to the heated realism of the production, Nicholas Hussong’s projections and Robert Kaplowitz’s sound effects create the mindless environment in which people are made to whizz and whirl like the machines they operate. That existence comes to life on stage with Adesola Osakalumi as the performer and choreographer of his own repetitive robotic behavior.

Everything Glitters And Is Gold

In Cirque du Soleil’s latest New York production, Paramour, at The Lyric Theatre, the object of love is the stage. Depicting the golden age of Hollywood through the spectacle of a Broadway musical, the show, unlike other Cirque du Soleil productions, has a fully developed plot and realistic characters - stage creatures all. For one, there is the acrobatic ensemble, which ignites in true Cirque du Soleil fashion. In my favorite scene, an old-fashioned chase sequence, Cirque performers bound across rooftops that are their trampolines. Such moments have the delicious verve that keeps the show, and the audience, headed for rapture. The inner romance at the heart of Paramour, however, is a somewhat more duplicitous affair with Jeremy Kushner as AJ, the tyrannical director and Ruby Lewis, the star he discovers and tries to possess. But real love happens on the stage, and that ultimately is the thrust of this production, in which the

(& Sometimes Off)

ingénue and the songwriter (played by Ryan Vona) become the apex of this confection – much like a colorful multi-tiered wedding cake.

A Rarely Revived Ibsen at CSC

Adapting Ibsen’s Peer Gynt for a contemporary audience is a mighty under taking, and John Doyle’s production, off Broadway at CSC, demonstrates the master y of an outstanding director. As produced here, our appreciation for the play rests on our affection - a kind of love-hate relationship - with the actor who portrays Peer Gynt. To that end, Gabriel Ebert is a

fascinating interpreter. On Broadway, in Matilda The Musical, he garnered a Tony Award for his sidesplitting performance as Matilda’s oafish dad. At the opposite end of the spectrum, in Lincoln Center’s 4000 Miles, Ebert gave a startlingly understated portrayal of a young man at an emotional crossroad. As Peer Gynt, Ebert is challenged by the full range of acting challenges, from bizarre and intense physicality to immeasurable leaps and bounds of spirit and mind. Indeed, in Doyle’s interpretation, character, complex as it is, is the central issue. Tasked with the existential complaint, “Man, be thyself,” Peer is driven to exceed the banal world, while still deluded by the egotism of his quest. Both images – the messiah, who is a true “Emperor of Self” and the self-serving greedy impersonator – come to life in Ebert’s hands. A gifted supporting cast including George Abud, Becky Ann Baker, Dylan Baker, Quincy Tyler Bernstein, Adam Heller and Jane Pfitsch, portray

both the real and the imagined characters in Peer’s adventures. David L. Arsenault’s naked staging, Jane Cox’s ominous lighting and Ann HouldWard’s contemporary costumes are underscored by Dan Moses Schreier’s eerie music and sound effects. While only 120 minutes (with no intermission), Doyle’s characteristically minimalist approach to Ibsen’s epic work aptly depicts the opaque and contradictory nature of a man in search of greatness.
