of sloppy kisses, if you attended the Animal Rescue Fund’s (ARF) 6th Annual Designer Showcase. ‘Tis the season for fundraisers, and Memorial Day Weekend boasted a slew of notable causes. The ARF Thrift & Treasure Shop, located on Montauk Highway in Sagaponack, received a fresh coat of paint, literally. Several established designers were called in to give the six rooms a touch of their own style, using their own goods, as well as items offered in the actual ARF Thrift Shop. Unlike many showhouses, everything was for sale. While some events support situations a world away, ARF really brought the feeling home, with a mobile pet van. Several darling cats and dogs eagerly licked guests' hands, waiting to possibly be adopted right then and

there. It was hard to resist bringing home yet another feisty little tiger (this author has two rescue cats). Each room boasted a different feel, with some reminiscent of a c a m p e r ' s l o d g e ( b y Tr a c e y Cavaniola), while others were light, monochromatic and airy. Designers included Nancy Corzine, Lynda Sylvester and the like. One of the most spectacular perhaps was Eldon Wong’s “Dinner at Dogtown Abbey,” where glasses held kibbles and bits in lieu of sorbet and sweets. John Stedila and Tim Button’s countrycoral bedroom, with the setting sun peeking through the windows, was tempting enough to move into. Sam Allen’s dressing room was especially great, making use of the iconic orange Hermes gift boxes. Meow!

BookHampton Opening

A Taste Of Wine BookHampton, the popular independent bookstore on Main Street in East Hampton recently purchased by Carolyn Brody, has reopened following a short period for renovation and is bringing in an exciting and expanded inventory. “I am thrilled to continue the wonderful legacy of this bookstore. We’ve opened up the space, added more bookshelves, and refurbished throughout. I think everyone will find something they love here, and I couldn’t ask for a more responsive community,” said Brody. Filled on Memorial Day weekend with large crowds of interested book buyers, the bright and modern interior features favorites, general interest, classics, and new releases in an extensive inventory of more than 20,000 titles. Indy Publisher Jerry Della Femina (top, center) and his wife, the beautiful Judy Licht attended the opening. Brody brought in her longtime friend and one of the most influential booksellers in the country, Roxanne Coady, owner of R.J. Julia in Madison, Connecticut, and her team to help get BookHampton up and running quickly. Summertime author events are booked with Firooz Zahedi, Gerald Marzorati, Judith Stein, Jay McInerney, Moira Weigel, Isaac Mizrahi, and Maira Kalman.

Spearheading the “everything must go!” sale at Connie Anderson Franklin Triangle in East Hampton was Prudence Carabine of the Estate Sale’s beneficiary East Hampton Historical Farm Museum over Memorial Day Weekend. The East Hampton Historical Farm Museum is located on the corner of Cedar and North Main Streets. Connie Anderson’s daughter Walda Wanger Roseman was there to supervise and explain the various objects. Most of what is now Maidstone Park in Springs was once composed of two farms, Duck Creek Farm and Franklin Farm. The Franklin Farm House was eventually moved to its current location (and the location of the sale). Actress, musical comedy headliner, and real estate entrepreneur Connie Anderson developed the Franklin Triangle, which has now been sold.

Lee Krasner Coloring Book

IN THE NEWS

By Rick Murphy Ruby Jackson certainly qualifies as an authority when it comes to Lee Krasner – after all, Jackson, a gifted sculptor and painter in her own right, has served as Assistant Director of the Pollock-Krasner House and Study Center for more than a decade. The Sag Harbor resident has teamed with her husband, Allan Zola Kronzek, a best-selling author of children’s books, on a new project: Lee Krasner: An Artist’s Life. And is comes with a kid-friendly twist -- the first half is a coloring book.

K r a s n e r, a n A b s t r a c t Expressionist, lived in New York City during the Great Depression and specialized in line drawings – this is the part of her life Kronzek and Jackson have depicted as a coloring book. Krasner married a fellow artist Jackson Pollock and moved to Springs, living and working in the house on Springs Fireplace Road, which is now the Study Center. The second half of the book is devoted to Krasner’s drawings, photographs, and artwork from that period. “Ruby’s charming illustrations appeal to youngsters, especially kids who like to draw,” says Pollock-Krasner House Director Helen A. Harrison. “Allan’s engaging text makes Lee’s story come alive for young readers. Getting to know Lee as a person and learning about what really inspired her really helps the appreciate abstract art,” she added. Jackson said the book was a labor of love for her. “I strongly identify with Lee. We both grew up in Jewish households, both went to Hebrew School, and both loved to draw,” she said. “The more I studied about Lee, the more I felt like I was entering her world. I hope she would have liked the book. The book is available at the Pollock Krasner House and other locales. Email Jackson at rubyja@outlook.com for more information.

By Jessica Mackin East End Arts in Riverhead has joined forces with FOLD (Freak Out Let's Dance) Festival to present the Emerging Artists Project. This call for musicians gives local artists a chance to apply to perform on stage at the FOLD Festival in August. Performers at the three day festival, set for August 12 to 14 at Martha Clara Vineyards in Riverhead, include Chic featuring festival founder Nile Rodgers, Kesha, Bette Midler, Earth, Wind & Fire, DNCE Featuring Joe Jonas, KC & The Sunshine Band, The Village People, Doug E. Each day of the festival the solo artist and a band that is picked will perform two songs on stage. Artists must have all of their own equipment. A committee of music pros will screen the submissions. Multi Grammy Award-winning composer, producer and guitarist Nile Rodgers will select the final performers. In the words of Kesha, "Tik Tok," because the deadline for submissions is June 26. Finalists will be notified by July 15. Visit www.foldfestival.com for more info.

Method

You will start the night before you are going to serve this dish. The duck legs need to sit in the cure over night before you confit them. Start by mixing the salt, sugar, and spices together then generously coating the duck legs. Cover and let sit in the fridge over night. When you are ready to begin cooking, set your oven to 350. Wash the excess cure from the duck legs and pat them dry. Find a large oven proof vessel to cook the duck legs in. Submerge them in the fat. Either duck fat if you can find it or canola oil will work fine. Place in the oven at 350 for 30 minutes, just to get the oil up to temperature. Reduce the heat to 275 and let the duck legs cook for three and a half more hours. While the duck legs are cooking you can dice the leeks and squash. Go ahead and make your tomato sauce by first cutting the top off the tomatoes. Put them in the oven with the duck legs for 15 minutes.

When you remove the tomatoes from the oven, allow them to cool for 10 minutes the simply peel the skin off. Crush them with your hand, then on the stove top in a large sauce pot. Heat the olive oil and garlic but do not brown the garlic. Put the tomato into the pot and cook over medium heat for 20 minutes. When the duck legs are ready, remove them from the oven and use a slotted spoon to remove them from the hot oil. Place them on a towel and let them cool until they can be handled. When they are cool pick the duck meat. You are now ready to cook the pasta. Bring a large pot of water to a boil. Cook the pasta stirring often for about 10 minutes. Meanwhile, heat a large sauté pan. Add a bit of olive oil and sauté the leeks and squash. When the squash gets a bit of color add the sauce, then the duck. When the pasta is cooked add the pasta and the butter. Garnish with the mash and grated cheese. Enjoy!

Duryea’s in Montauk has opened under new ownership. The 80 year-old family-owned business was purchased three years ago by Marc Rowan. The new ownership has maintained the authentic Montauk vibe of the historic fish market and lobster deck, while renovating the space and adding updates. Look for comfy banquette seating, classic teak deck furniture and simple dinnerware. The popular menu includes all of the favorite items as well as some new additions featuring mostly local seafood. To emphasize the casual and fun atmosphere at Duryea’s, the menu

is now served family style, most dishes serving two to three people. Sample menu items include: lobster cobb salad, crab cake, baked cherry stone clams, grilled or steamed lobster, classic clam bake, Duryea’s famous lobster roll, soft shell crab po-boy and seafood towers featuring raw bar items and sushi. As well, family style side dishes are available such as French fries, jasmine rice, potato wedges and corn on the cob. A kid’s menu offers simple kid friendly options such as chicken fingers, beef sliders and grilled

cheese. A wine and beer selection features a red, white and rosé option with a private label Belgian White brew from Crooked Ladder Brewing Company in Riverhead. The fish market features fresh local seafood from lobsters and crabs to fish and shrimp. Several farm to market products are also available for purchase including: Goodale Farm fresh feta and Greek yogurt, Fairview Farm homemade jams and preserves and Backyard Brine pickles.
