It felt like the dog days of summer on Main Street in East Hampton on Friday, as Dylan's Candy Bar held an ARF dog adoption event in front of the store. Dylan's owner Dylan Lauren, a lifelong lover of animals, hosted the event, inviting dog owners and their dogs to share their puppy love, and to help ARF find homes for some of their rescued pooches. SoFo Summer Gala

By Nicole Teitler

The twenty-seventh annual Summer Gala Benefit at the South Fork Natural History Museum will take place this Saturday. This year the gala will be co-chaired by Ann Liguori and Kim and Greg Lippmann with special guest hosts Tracy Anderson and Katie Lee. The event is held at 377 Bridgehampton Sag Harbor Turnpike in Bridgehampton. A VIP reception will run from 6 to 7 PM and the gala from 7 to 10 PM. One of the honorees is the Patsy and Jeff Tarr family. Patsy Tarr, philanthropist and publisher, founded the 2wice Arts Foundation in 1989, a nonprofit supporting the visual and performing arts which also has a magazine 2wice that comes out twice a year. Together, Patsy and Jeff Tarr, a private investor, reconstructed a Central Park playground in 2009. Located on the West Side at 100th Street, the Tarr Family Playground is a place kids of all ages can enjoy. Other honorees are Anke and Jurgen Friedrich, real estate professionals from Germany who love to buy, renovate and sell homes in the Hamptons. Jurgen Friedrich helped run the Esprit operations in Europe and is currently a board member for the company. The SoFo Summer Gala will host its

second VIP Cocktail pre-gala reception which includes a special tasting menu that was donated by leading local chefs. Chefs include Matty Boudreau of Baron’s Cove, Sam McClelland and David Loewenberg of The Beacon, Sarah Hong of East Hampton Grill, Keith Davis of Golden Pear, Greg Grossman/The Culinaria Group of Oreya, Kerry Hefferman of Grand Banks, Mike Martinson of Montauk Pearl Oysters, Andy Reice of Swedish Culinary Summer, and Terry Harwood of Vine Street Café. This year, the featured guest chef is Chef Alex Guarnaschelli. Guar naschelli grew up in the household of an esteemed cookbook editor, who she called mom, Maria Guarnaschelli. From reading about the culinary craft on a regular basis early on in life, she eventually went to pursue her interests upon graduating college from Barnard College by working under American chef Larry Forgione. Spending years abroad and working at notable New York restaurants such as Daniel and Patina, Guarnaschelli went to become an executive chef at Butter in 2003 and in 2011 opened The Darby. A year later, in 2012, Alex gained the title of Iron Chef. Earlier this year, she told Indy that her favorite summer dishes include

chilled melon soup, grilled hanger steak with farm stand chili salsa, and drinks with watermelon ice cubes. At the gala guests can dance along to music by Nancy Atlas and The Nancy Atlas Project. Top Hats In The Hamptons By Carrie Catherine Holmes

Artists and patrons have always flocked to The Hamptons for its serene and unique beauty. This week’s exhibit at Art Southampton was proof of that. Attracting crowds from all walks of life, the exhibition allows The Hamptons’ finest to show their work in a medley of culture and creativity. One artist stands out among them. Kevin Berlin describes the show from his booth as, “the perfect place to mix business with pleasure,” with model and friend, Lucy M. Miller, saying, “It’s like nothing I’ve ever seen, just really amazing.” An artist, sculptor, performance artist, and now fashion designer, Berlin took this year’s show to debut his work as a fashion designer through a signature line of Top Hats. A 17-

year veteran of The Hamptons art scene, Berlin decided to change his usual methods of self-expression and creativity to include high-end apparel intended to make an everyday statement. In the world wide debut of his line, Kevin Berlin New York, which is not yet available for purchase, the spirit of fun and new experiences on the East End was captured by his interactive display where patrons were invited to try on the hats, which come in three heights. The jump to design was inspired by wanting to make the bridge between the two lifestyles of artists on not only the East End, but in the world. “Artists are always struggling, whenever I see a fashion designer they are always drinking champagne on a yacht,” he said, keeping with the artist spirit of

Top hats are for men and women, and like the idea of New York, we all come from everywhere. We all want a chance to be ourselves with our own style and enjoy life.” In a region that relishes the expression of self that attracts a medley of unique and bold individuals, Kevin Berlin’s life and love for the East End stands out in not only his style and creations, but in his personality.

The Complete Works Of William Shakespeare (Abridged)

Independent/Nathaniel Johnston

Coming to The Hamptons, Purpled Pheasant Productions stages the genius comedy The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged), which ran to rave reviews and an impressive nine-year run on London’s West End. The uproarious slapstick romp, which lovingly parodies the greatest words of The Bard, will take place at the Southampton Cultural Center Thursdays through Saturdays, this week through July 31. The show—a wild and fun homage to Shakespeare’s canon, laden with physical comedy, fast-and-furious entrances and exits and hot costume changes—follows three enthusiastic but hilariously misinformed actors who attempt to stage all of Shakespeare’s

37 plays in comically “abridged” form. The brand-new company brings fresh new Equity talent and Broadwaycaliber productions to the East End. The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged) is directed by Craig George, and produced by Purpled Pheasant Productions with Ian Harkins, Kimberly Loren, and Rafe Terrizzi, in partnership with the Southampton Cultural Center. astrology & all Week of 7/13/16 - 7/20/16 Highlight of the week: This Friday will be a highly volatile day as the planets in the sky are at war with each other. All signs should try to avoid arguments or squabbles with friends, family, or even strangers. Things can get out of hand quickly. Please be safe when you drive Aries (3/20 - 4/20) Chomping at the bit for something to happen? Anything to happen? Relax and use these golden days of summer to distract yourself. You’ll be moving on soon enough. Taurus (4/20 - 5/21) Even if money is tight, entertaining and enjoying yourself is a priority this week. Avoid conflicts at work, which can linger in your mind for quite a while if stirred. Gemini (5/21 - 6/22) Keep talks with partners on the gentle side as tempers may be easily riled. A bombshell can happen at work when a discovery comes to light. Stay neutral, if possible. Cancer (6/22 - 7/23) Food, parties, love, and sex are all wonderful activities for you to escape into this week. When others blow off steam, just step to the side. Leo (7/23 - 8/23) Travel plans will go well if you realize that delays can and do happen. If staying home, there will be plenty to keep you busy with friends and local activities. Don’t allow yourself to get sucked into an ongoing feud. Virgo (8/23 - 9/23) Try, just try, to stop worrying and enjoy your time with loved ones and friends. You can

Libra (9/23 - 10/23) You handle your obligations with grace and style as usual. It’s not necessary to tell anyone your plans or feelings until you are ready to hatch them. Scorpio (10/23 - 11/22) Don’t let any inner turmoil get the best of you. This stalemate won’t last forever. Let friends distract you with plans that you both can enjoy. Sagittarius (11/22 - 12/21) Hearing from an old friend or a memory from the past can be like a jolt out of the blue. It gives you something to think about. Short trips will be fun if you don’t overspend. Capricorn (12/21 - 1/20) Get out and do some exercise if you feel like you are stuck in a rut. Even a leisurely stroll around the neighborhood is magic for your mood. Don’t give up on love as it is still there. Aquarius (1/20 - 2/19) Can that hobby be turned into something that brings in some extra cash? You might want to explore it. Love, romance, and friends blend very nicely, but stay out of any scuffles and don’t take sides. Pisces (2/19 - 3/20) Chances for love to flourish are very good. Enjoy your partner but put off any serious discussions for another time. If single, it is time to mingle. Note: If you know your rising sign, read that horoscope too. Independent Dining Scallop With Pomelo Purée, Baby Radish And Carrot Salad Ingredients (serves 4) 12 large sea scallops 2 grapefruit 1 lime 1 orange 8 baby carrots 10 baby radishes 10 mint leaves ( chiffonade) 1 c sugar 1 c olive oil Sea salt and fresh cracked pepper

Method

Start by peeling the skin from the two grapefruit, and half the orange

being careful to remove all of the white pith. Juice and zest all the fruit. Make the simple syrup by heating one cup of water with one cup of sugar over medium heat stirring often. When the sugar is melted into the water, take off the heat and set aside for later. Once these steps are complete, begin your purée by filling a small sauce pot with cold water and the peelings from the two grapefruit and the half orange. Bring the water to a boil then bail the water from the pot and repeat this process five times. While you wait for the water to boil

each time, wash the carrots and radish. Take off the leafy top and set aside. Carefully start to slice the vegetables paper thin on your mandolin. At this point you have brought the peels to a boil starting in cold water five times. Finish cooking the peels in the simple syrup over medium low heat until the peels appear translucent. This will take 30 to 45 minutes. Remove the peels from the simple syrup and place in a blender with half the grapefruit juice and all the orange juice and blend on high. When the purée begins to become smooth, finish by drizzling in a half cup of olive oil. Place the warm purée in the fridge

to cool. Wash the scallops with cold water and remove the muscle on the side. Slice them into quarter inch thick coins. Assemble your dish by making a quick dressing with the other half cup of olive oil, the lime juice, the mint, and one tsp of the simple syrup used to cook the citrus peels from the purée. Mix the shaved carrots and radish in two tbsp of this dressing. Spread the purée artfully on the plate. Shingle the scallop coins in a line through the purée. Place the carrot and radish salad around the plate. Finish with sea salt and cracked pepper and garnish with some of the dressed vegetable tops.

A Dinner To Enjoy The Great Bonac Fireworks

East Hampton Point Restaurant in Springs, the waterfront-dining destination with spectacular sunset views overlooking Three Mile Harbor, presents a celebration tasting menu by Chef Thomas Rougey in honor of Bastille Day and the Great Bonac Fireworks Show on Saturday. The French-inspired five-course

tasting menu, $125 per person with optional $70 wine pairing, reflects Chef Rougey’s south-of-France roots and use of local bounty. Special menu dishes include striped bass crudo with lemon extra virgin olive oil, jalapeno, French radish and micro cilantro; vichyssoise with chive crème fraiche and American caviar; dayboat Montauk sea scallops accompanied by risotto with Crescent Farm duck; braised short ribs with confit potato, roasted cipollini and braising jus; and white peach and black plum semi fredo with port wine sauce. Paired wines will include sparkling, rosé, white and red wine selections sourced from vineyards as near as the Hamptons to France. Reservations for dinner, 5 to 11 PM, are recommended. Fireworks begin at 9:30 PM with prime views from the main and upstairs decks and dining rooms, dockside bar and marina. Chef Rougey’s a la carte dining room and deck menus of New American fare will return on Sunday. According to the Clamshell Foundation, which dedicates this year’s fireworks in memory of its founder, Rossetti Perchik, “The annual fireworks display started in the early 1970’s when George Plimpton, the late writer, actor and founder of The Paris Review, began hosting fireworks parties at his homes in Sagaponack and Amagansett. Because of Plimpton’s
