Showhouse: A World Unto Yourself

This Saturday at 6 PM The Hampton Designer Showhouse will open for its sixteenth year in Sag Harbor with a Gala Preview Cocktail Party and remains open to the public through Labor Day. As a showcase for some of the best designer talent in America, the showhouse will feature 25 interior designers and decorating artists who will turn the location into a cumulative masterpiece. The showhouse location is decided based on the size of the house. With numerous designers taking part in the event each year, space is key, allowing plenty of room for individual creativity. This year’s property has three levels, with first and second floor master suites as part of the eight bedrooms featured on each floor. Each room overlooks a beautiful, completely private three acre setting. Also included will be a wine cellar, elevator and home theater. The public’s interest in home design is steadily on the rise. Television programming, such as on HGTV, inspires new ways to decorate and remodel the everyday house. Stores are stocking their shelves with designer product lines of all levels and whether you shop at Target or Hellman-Lang, there is a style for everyone. All this

contributes to the growing appeal of the event as people come in from as far as Connecticut, New Jersey, all over New York and even Pennsylvania for day trips. Tony Manning, the Showhouse Marketing Chairman, has helped the Hampton Designer Showhouse obtain national coverage through full scale public awareness campaigning. Manning describes the event as “different things for different people . . . a world unto yourself” with “a great way to walk into a room and experience it.” One of his favorite features is the ceiling, an aspect the public has a tendency to overlook. Tony encourages the public to get ideas and become fascinated. He imagines walking into a room and questioning, “With three different types of windows, how did this designer choose to deal with that?” Each space is a unique escape. Naming his favorite designers was comparable to picking a favorite child: “impossible.” Though a few repeat names Manning recommends watching out for are the Tilton Fenwick women, consisting of Anne Maxwell Foster and Suysel dePedro Cunningham, Gideon Mendelson of Mendelson Group, Inc., Kate Singer of Kate Singer Home, and Mabley Handler of Mably Handler Interior Design. The End
This July, one of the most famous photography books in recent decades, The End: Montauk, N.Y. by Michael Dweck, will debut its expanded 10th Anniversary Limited Art Edition, retailing at $3000. As Healing opens Sharon (Shannon DeVido) and Donald (David Harrell) are eating cake in the living room and watching Home Shopping Network. It seems utterly quotidian, but at second glance, we notice that Donald has a thalidomide-deformed arm and Sharon, seated behind the couch, is in a wheelchair. They’re trying to chill because today they buried Zoe whose home they’re staying in while they clean it out. Others soon arrive, even if they couldn’t make it to the funeral. Among them, Bonnie (Jamie Petrone), a perky young woman who moves with remarkable flexibility, given that she’s wheelchair bound, and her new boyfriend Greg (John McGinty) who doesn’t miss a beat, even though he’s deaf. Tall and naturally good looking, he’s an entrepreneur with an Internet startup, selling electric toothbrushes on the Internet. As a man who reads lips, he gets to see a lot of teeth. There is no embarrassment here about the pathos of these characters’ lives. Those who knew Zoe met her at a camp they all attended as children. Their mentor, Joan (Lynne Lipton), whose teachings Zoe clung to until she surrendered her fight to live, was a Christian Scientist who taught kids that the material world is an illusion and they could pray their way out of wheelchairs into healthy lives. Just the folderol of which Zoe was the ultimate victim. But long before Zoe’s demise, Sharon, her best friend and by far the most accomplished character in the play, had the camp shut down. Shannon De Vido, in a performance that brings Marlee Maitlin’s early film work to mind, portrays her beautifully. But much as she tries to save Zoe from dying of strep throat because she wouldn’t take medicine, Sharon carries the guilt of her loss. ‘Why couldn’t she? Why didn’t she?’ are probing questions she also cannot dispel. A playwright who peers into dark places, Samuel D. Hunter’s takes a brave look at the lives of people with disabilities; the harsh realities of the world they encounter; and the nature of hope and spirituality. Most importantly, Hunter draws true, meaningful characters.

were vastly improved by racial war and plundering. Here, in the Potomac Theatre Project’s revival at the Atlantic Stage 2 Theater, Michael Kaye portrays the literary hero, John Halder, a novelist whose works espousing the positive reasons for euthanasia have been lauded by Eichmann (Adam Ludwig) as well as Hitler (Noah Berman). At first, Halder appears to be a morally informed intellectual. His best friend is a Jewish psychoanalyst in whom he confides, especially about his inability to demonstrate manly prowess. Throughout their conversations, Halder sustains the belief that the Nazis will relinquish their position on racialism when the German economy stabilizes, and along with it the need for a nationalist sentiment. Besides, when the going gets too tough, Halder always has an out, escaping into an illusory inner life in which he is only aware of the music he hears playing in his mind. Motivated by ambition, an unsatisfying marriage, and his lust for a young student, Halder joins the Nazi party. In his lapse from morality -- abandoning his family, refusing to help his best friend flea the country -- he denies any perception of wrongdoing. Regardless, it’s all good for our hero, who just gets sucked in, and frankly there is no clear reason why a good man succumbs to such banality. We simply watch it happen, and in the play’s climactic scene, when Halder arrives at Auschwitz to aid in euthanizing the camp’s diseased and decimated inmates, he contends that he’s relieving them of their burdened lives. If he sees anything else about it, the victorious band playing in his mind blots it all out. The scenic design by Mark Evancho, on a naked stage with a piano and several boxes used to create a variety of locations, is truly deft. The ensemble, especially Tim Spears as Halder’s
History’s Lessons
Right wing populism, as we know, is finding fertile soil in our land. A lousy economy for most of us, a political system that proves ineffectual, and the threat of menace from foreigners and foreign countries, is fodder for unconventional politics. Just the environment for the antiestablishment mass media frenzy Donald Trump produces. In C. J. Taylor’s Good, we witness some parallels with the setting: Germany in the ‘30s. Most importantly and simply, that Hitler, an avenger of society’s underdogs, had his willing beneficiaries, the many underserved people whose lives

best friend, is outstanding. Careening from Chaplinesque to Hitleresque and desperate for help from his friend, Spears executes the role with sardonic humor. Fortunately, director Jim Petosa mines the emotional impact of Taylor’s political drama.
Silenced, At Last!
Running in repertoire with Good, the Potomic Theater Project’s revival of No End of Blame: Scenes of Overcoming follows the career of an artist, simultaneously chronicling the political tide from World War I, to the rise of the Soviet Union, to England from the 1930s into the ‘70s. It is equally a drama about the artist as the outsider, and the repression of free speech. Between Bela (Alex Draper) a political cartoonist, and the censors who prevail upon him from one social construct to another, there is no sentimental favorite. When we first meet him fighting in the Carpathian Mountains during WW I, he’s attempting to rape a half naked, nearly dead woman. Meanwhile, his artist friend and military comrade, Grigor (David Barlow), responds by taking out his pen to document her beauty. While one is vicious, the other is utterly banal.
As played with sheer cheekiness and passion by Alexander Draper, Bela is a man who acts on base instinct and whose crude behaviors are sometimes just as despicable as his censors find him to be. And the censors – well, they are merely cartoonish characterizations, not truly worthy of our regard. Rife with myriad characters, several of whom are played by one actor, and set in diverse time periods and sociopolitical structures, Howard Barker’s drama requires the audience to fix close attention on the action. And even then, what we face is the ambiguity of human motivation and the enigmatic world of the artist. Clearly, Barker didn’t intend to make play going an easy experience. To that end, director Richard Romagnoli is a reasonable conduit. Along with Draper, the actors achieve a strong presence throughout their many roles. Jonathan Tindle as a communist interrogator, a dumb Bobbie, and a publisher of a family newspaper on London’s Fleet Street, gives a stand out performance, as does Valerie Leonard in roles that require a wide range of accents. As his cohort and in various other roles, David Barlow proves so cartoonish, we wonder what we should tolerate as theater.

Walk Of Hope
The Hope for Depression Research Foundation presents the “Walk of Hope” on Saturday, July 30, starting at 9 AM at the the Southampton Cultural Center, where Chair Audrey Gruss will lead participants on a three-mile walk around Lake Agawam in Southampton Village. HDRF was founded in April 2006 in memory of Audrey’s mother Hope, who struggled with clinical depression. The causes of depression are still unknown and 50 percent of people do not respond to existing medications, but HDRF is working to change that. The mission of HDRF is to accelerate advanced brain research into the origins, diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of depression, as well as raise awareness of depression as a medical illness, educate the public, and erase the stigma of depression.

Independent Dining The Backyard At Solé East By Jessica Mackin Last weekend I headed to The Backyard Restaurant at Solé East in Montauk for a delicious dinner at the beautiful locale. The Backyard restaurant is a hidden gem in Montauk located within the Solé East hotel. They offer a fun, lively, fresh concept, focusing on local and sustainable seasonal cuisine. For our appetizers we started with the beet salad, a perfect starter that included bib lettuce, candied walnuts, goat cheese crumbles, pumpernickel croutons, with a sherry and citrus vinaigrette. The steamed P.E.I mussels were also wonderful, prepared with leeks, plum tomato, capers, parsley butter, white wine and a grilled garlic bread. The restaurant offers a "Simply Off The Grill" section of the menu with choices of meat including skirt steak, yellow fin tuna, diver scallops and more. I decided on the wild striped bass of the grill with a side of grilled asparagus. The dish was simple and grilled to perfection.
My friend ordered the pan seared sea scallops as her main, which came with Puy lentils, roasted tomato, baby artichoke, and a saffron aioli. The delectable dish did not disappoint. For dessert we opted to split the berries and lemon cream. The sweet treat included a vanilla tuille and blueberry compote. The dining room features a clean and fresh atmosphere with rotating art exhibits of local artists and photographers adorning the walls. The outdoor patio welcomes guests to sit at tables placed throughout the garden that surround the pool, roaring fire pit, tiki torches, and day beds. The restaurant welcomes guests not only for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, but also for live music and cocktails. Whether you go for a meal, cocktails, or for the live entertainment, The Backyard Restaurant at Solé East is sure to be a hit. This week at The Backyard Restaurant

Roasted Spaghetti Squash & Brussel Sprouts With Herbed Butter Sauce Ingredients (serves 4) 1 large spaghetti squash 1 lb Brussels sprouts 1 clove of garlic sliced thin 1/4 c olive oil 1/4 lb butter 1/4 c chicken stock 1 tbsp of thyme (picked) 1 tbsp tarragon (picked & chopped) 1 tbsp chervil (chopped) salt and pepper to taste
Method
Start by washing the outside of the spaghetti squash. Split it lengthwise down the middle, scrape out the seeds, and place the squash on a sheet tray with the skin side down. Roast in the oven at 400 degrees for one hour. Bring a pot of salted water to a boil and quarter your Brussels sprouts. Cook the Brussels sprouts in the boiling water for about two minutes. Immediately
place in an ice bath to cool them down. Strain and reserve in the refrigerator until later. Heat the chicken stock to a simmer.
Take off the heat and slowly whisk in the cold butter until you have created a sauce. When you have achieved a sauce-like consistency, set the sauce aside until later. When the spaghetti squash is finished roasting, fork out the tender roasted flesh part of the squash. Heat two pans over medium heat and add the olive oil evenly. Begin sautéing the garlic in each pan. The squash will go in one pan and the

Brussels sprouts in the other. Cut side down for the Brussels sprouts to create a nice sear. Brown each of the vegetables and season to your liking. At this point you are ready to warm the butter sauce and add the herbs to the sauce. Don't heat it too high or you will break the sauce. Plate the vegetables and ladle a bit of sauce over the top and enjoy.

Zigmund’s To Open Eric Lemonides and Jason Weiner, the owners of Bridgehampton’s Almond, will launch Zigmund’s in Bridgehampton. Zigmund’s, named again for Weiner’s wife Almond Zigmund, will be a bar inspired by the location’s popular bar in the 90s called the Wild Rose. “The Wild Rose was a great bar with food, drinks, awesome music and even a karaoke night. This is the vibe we are going for at Zigmund’s,” said Lemonides. Zigmund’s is slated to open July 25.
The space offers a rustic vibe with exposed steel beams supporting reclaimed wood walls, which surround from floor to ceiling. Comfortable black booths with small throw pillows line a window-spotted wall, while wooden bar tables fill the rest of the space. The horseshoe bar with a wooden shelved back bar hides a television behind a rolling chalkboard sprawled with the concoctions of the moment. “Artisanal, Seasonal & Local”

is the Almond tagline and that all applies to Lemonides and Weiner’s new spot. Cocktails will be the main attraction here with a menu created by barman Justin August Fairweather. The core of the cocktail program will be incorporating ingredients from the onsite garden in front of the building. The garden will be curated and maintained by Amagansett’s Amber Waves Farm. Seven cocktails will be featured on tap, house batched with fresh herbs. There’s a vodka soda, but not your typical vodka soda, this one is housemade with lemon verbena vodka, lemon balm and citrus zest marinated for 24 hours and batched for the tap. Zigmund’s will offer a “Bespoke” menu featuring housemade shrubs from fresh local fruits, vegetables and herbs. These shrubs can be paired with spirit of choice, topped off with soda resulting in an epic summer cooler. A small but tasty bar menu will feature Weiner’s take on Greek inspired dishes. Selections include: grilled octopus ($11), grilled lamb chops ($7 each), eggplant dip ($10), grilled feta, olives and tomatoes ($10), lentil and garlic spread ($8), spinach and garlic ($8), fried fish with French fries, dill and lemon ($22) and French fries ($6). Each night at Zigmund’s will bring a different theme. The week will kick off with Industry/Locals Night sponsored by El Jimador and Jack Daniels on Monday with $5 well drinks, wine, draft beer and $5 snacks featuring a mix of tunes from pop and the 80’s to Hip Hop. Look for street teams handing out bracelets to locals and industry workers for entry on Monday nights. Wednesday night will be karaoke night for those looking to hit the mic from 9 PM to midnight. Thirsty Thursday will bring in $20 pitchers and $5 shots alongside bluegrass, blues, and jazz. The weekend kicks off with top 40 tunes and late night disco on Fridays followed by the Saturday Night Special with a disco DJ and Soul Train projected on to the ceiling. The week closes out with Reggae Sunday sponsored by Appleton Rum featuring $7 tiki drinks and $20 tiki pitchers.
