Hope For Depression
By Ashley O’Connell
Noble causes to support exist far and wide, however, personal experience with a subject always creates a passionate drive unlike any other. On July 16, set amongst the breathtaking hydrangeas of founder Audrey Gruss’s estate was the kickoff party for the Hope for Depression Research Fund. HDRF knows the importance of getting to the true root of the problem - research of the brain to find the cause, and then everything from diagnosis to treatment to one day, a cure. A balmy evening of finger food and festivities, the Mayor of Southampton. Mark Epley spoke, thanking everyone for their support. HDRF's Walk Of Hope takes place on Saturday at Lake Agwam in Southampton, meeting at 8 AM. After the walk, from 11 AM to noon, participating stores such as Michael Kors on Main Street will donate 20 percent of their proceeds to the fund. Whether you muster up the early morning energy to walk or want a new handbag, you can help ease the stigma surrounding mental illness.

Mozart: A Melody Retold By Alan Alda
Independent/ Courtesy BCMF
By Nicole Teitler The thirty-third annual Bridgehampton Chamber Music Festival begins this Sunday. Over the course of five weeks, spanning through August 28, there will be twelve programs and thir teen concerts, composed by a mix of classical and new age music, music masters, and up-and-comers. Long Islands longest running classical musical festival will open with “Mozart: A Portrait in Music and Words,” on Sunday at 6:30 PM with a second performance added on August 1 at 6:30 PM, after the first sold out so quickly, at the Bridgehampton Presbyterian Church. Actor Alan Alda, most famous for his role on "M*A*S*H," will theatrically narrate letters written by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart that relate explicitly to what the musicians are playing in a chronological manner. The performance is composed in four pieces, Sonata in A major for Piano and Flute, Flute Quartet in D major, Piano Trip in C major, and Piano Quartet in E-flat major. Each piece takes the audience on a journey through Mozart’s life. Mozart was chosen to be featured due to his long history of writing. From the early age of eight years old until his death at age thirty-five, his life’s thoughts are documented. Mozart’s letters give way to an understanding into his passion for composing, staying up all night to write some of his greatest works, combining the worlds of melody and diction. Indy caught up with Mar ya Martin, Artistic Director of the Bridgehampton Chamber Music Festival recently. She recalled the volumes of letters Alan Alda organized for this performance and
sorting them, she said, “you get a feel of who the man is in the child, the child in the man. You never really grow up and you can feel [Mozart’s] genius through his words.” Alda studied the letters and carefully chose excerpts from them to write his own script. Depicting his range of emotions brings Mozart alive again, symbiotically tying storytelling and music together. “The job as the performer is to be the bridge between the written page and our audience. We play this music and if we’re successful then the audience will hear and feel what we’re trying to do,” Martin explained. She has been playing classical music since she was eight years old, both piano and flute, and said Mozart has always been a part of her. “His music is the heavens that have opened up. He’s one of the beauties of the world.” The festival’s program is decided a year in advance and the musicians have a two and a half day group rehearsal period before the five week summer concert series begins. Since each musician has played the pieces ahead of time, the rehearsals are about working on real nuance as a whole. “I f y o u h av e n’t m ade t hat performance personal or your own as a group the audience won’t feel it. We gather to put the finishing touches together and give it a meaningful performance,” Martin concluded. Other highlights of the Bridgehampton Chamber Music Festival include “Unfinished Business” at the Parrish Art Museum with music by Schubert, Arvo Part, Elizabeth Bown, and John Haribson along with “Lully’s Legacy: From the Court of the Sun King.” “Summer Winds,” the annual free outdoor concert will take
place on August 3. Guests can enjoy their time under a tent with chairs and a picnic. On August 19, there is a performance in the Channing Sculpture Garden from 7 to 8 PM with wine and hors d’oeuvres. Larger concerts include three Bach Brandenberg C o n c e r t o ’s a n d B e e t h o v e n ’s Nonet & Septet for Winds and Strings.

This years concert is dedicated to the generous people who help assure that classical music is alive on the East End for many to enjoy. For more info on the festival visit www.bcmf.org. You can follow more stories from Nicole Teitler on Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat as Nikki On The Daily.

think it through.
Highlights of the week: Uranus, the planet of surprises and innovation, stations to go retrograde. Expect the unexpected in every area of your life! Be careful driving. M e r c u r y, t h e p l a n e t o f communication, enters Virgo on Sunday. Think before you speak. Criticize and be criticized. Mars, the planet of our actions, enters Sagittarius, which makes us more optimistic about future plans.
Capricorn (12/21 - 1/20) Time to lighten up and leave that work for a while. Whether it is a planned vacation or even a stroll along the beach, you will open your inner visions to the joys in life. You are a butterfly, don’t doubt it!
Aries (3/20 - 4/20) Keep reviewing your plans to put the finishing touches in place. Treat others with kid gloves and you will have them eating out of your hands. Patience is a dirty word to you, but you will need it now. Taurus (4/20 - 5/21) You can find surprising ways to bring in more cash. Vacation plans lure you. Go for it! Don’t engage neighbors or sibs in petty fights. Bite your tongue. You will be glad you did. Gemini (5/21 - 6/22) Friends could surprise you with their words or actions. You will enjoy playing peacemaker. Make time to deepen love connections. Work will still be there, so stop that anxiety. Cancer (6/22 - 7/23) Do you feel like it’s time for some summer fun? Jump in! Love life is due for a boost, too. Go see some romantic movies or read poetry to get the mojo going. Leo (7/23 - 8/23) If you can’t travel at this time, get out and enjoy the local activities. Accept all invitations from friends. You never know who you might meet, and you will enjoy the laughs. Virgo (8/23 - 9/23) Pay attention to anything that needs TLC in your home so you can be quickly freed up to enjoy yourself. Look for ways to improve cash flow. The answer is right under your nose. Libra (9/23 - 10/22) Whether single or partnered, love is on the menu. You can move to the next level or perhaps meet a special someone locally. Relationships at work go smoothly after some false upsets. Scorpio (10/23 - 11/22) Go ahead and invest in yourself with some new clothes, or a new haircut. Indulge your heart’s desires to create a new “you.” Soon you will be center stage so plan for your entrance. Sagittarius (11/22 - 12/20) Great week to put that diet or exercise program in place. Also to clean out those closets and corners. That hobby might turn into a moneymaker if you
