The twelfth annual “A Hamptons Happening” to benefit The Samuel Wa x m a n C a n c e r R e s e a r c h Foundation, scheduled for Saturday in Bridgehampton, is shaping up to be the most exciting one ever. Formidable honorees, a bigger slate of top-tier restaurants, chefs and sponsors plus a very special anniversary make this year’s event a can’t-miss experience.

Slated to take place at the beautiful residence of Maria and Kenneth Fishel under a huge tent donated once again by ArtHamptons, “A Hamptons Happening” will pay homage to the founding of the Samuel Waxman Cancer Research Foundation by Dr. Samuel Waxman. This benchmark will be showcased literally through a 40th Anniversary SWCRF cabana with an exhibit of key moments in the SWCRF history and figuratively in flourishes throughout the event that celebrate the strides made by the world’s top cancer researchers thanks to four decades of support from the Waxman Foundation.

The event will honor Sandra Lee, philanthropist, New York Times best-selling author, Emmy-winning television personality and breast cancer survivor; Jayma Cardoso, Founder of The Surf Lodge in Montauk; and Deirdre Quinn, CEO of the luxury fashion company Lafayette 148 New York. LDV Hospitality is the featured restaurant group and the Honorary Lead Chef Couple is Fernanda Capobianco, founder of Vegan Divas, journalist and cookbook author, and Francois Payard, pastry chef, restaurateur, and author.

event chairs Marion Waxman, Laurie Schaffran and Karen Amster-Young are celebrating its past victories while remaining determined to set a new fundraising record for the event of $1 million.

Laurie, who is Secretary of the SWCRF Board of Directors, was introduced to the SWCRF after Dr. Waxman treated her late mother for colon cancer nearly 33 years ago. Laurie was impressed by the thoughtfulness and tenderness with which Dr. Waxman treated her mother and contacted the SWCRF to make a donation. After meeting with the SWCRF Board at the invitation of its then executive director, she was invited to join it.

Laurie recalls that the precursor to "A Hamptons Happening" was a cocktail party held in 2004 by longtime SWCRF supporter Marcia Lavipour at her Hamptons residence in appreciation to Dr. Waxman for treating her for cancer. The heartfelt cultivation gathering successfully elicited donations from guests and sparked the idea for a formalized fundraiser in the Hamptons. The SWCRF board asked Laurie to chair the event and Marion joined as cochair. Both women have seen the event blossom into a major presence on The Hamptons calendar of summer benefits.

Laurie credits event planner Linda Shapiro, proprietor of LBS Productions, with contributing to the growth through her dedication and efforts to build chef involvement and sponsorships.

“When we started it there weren’t a lot of food events,” Laurie says. “Now we have more competition but ours is the most elegant evening with the best

collection of high-end chefs that are presented in such a beautiful, seductive way. It has really become a jewel in the crown of the summer experience in The Hamptons.”

Marion is gratified by how the event has drawn premier chefs such as JeanGeorges, Todd English, and David Burke as featured chef honorees and continues to enjoy the support of fashion luminaries like St. John, Betsey Johnson, and Lafayette 148 New York.

On a personal note, she points out how the event brings together people with a desire to make a difference in the world.

“Two or three years ago, Chris Arlotta came over to me and said ‘I just want you to know that this was such a special evening and I’m at the point in my life where I would like to be involved in something as extraordinary as this. What could I do to help?’”

Marion recalls. This initial meeting led to Chris’ integration into the SWCRF community of collaborators, both as a committee member for “A Hamptons Happening” and as a member of the SWCRF marketing committee.

Marketing and public relations executive Karen Amster-Young is a newcomer to the SWCRF family of collaborators who joined the "A Hamptons Happening" committee last year and was invited to co-chair this year’s affair.

“I wanted to give back to something that was important and meaningful to me,” Karen says. “I wanted to be more selective about how and where I dedicated my expertise in PR and marketing and pro-bono time. Being a part of the Foundation has enabled me to meet some amazing, dedicated

people and be a part of something much bigger that is impacting people’s lives.”

Karen says guests can expect to experience the biggest and best “A Hamptons Happening” so far.

“I personally think the variety of chefs and this year’s honorees bring this event to a new level. It doesn’t hurt either that Jayma Cardoso, one of our honorees and owner of The Surf Lodge, is bringing her resident DJ for the night!”

The event chairs are very grateful to the committee members who generously donate their time and skills to help “A Hamptons Happening” raise funds for research. Culinary Power Couple Leads 'A Hamptons Happening'

By Nicole Teitler The twelfth annual “A Hamptons Happening” will take place Saturday at the home of Maria and Kenneth Fishel in Bridgehampton. This year celebrates the 40th anniversary of the founding of The Samuel Waxman Cancer Research Center. Honorees include American television chef and author Sandra Lee, founder and owner of Surf Lodge Montauk Jayma Cardoso and CEO of Lafayette 148 New York Deirdre Quinn.

In addition, the event will honor lead chef couple Fernanda Capobianco and François Payard.

Brazilian native, Fernanda Capobianco previously managed and owned The Payard Restaurant and Pastry shops in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, before developing all-natural, organic recipes with the freshest ingredients for her own desserts and sandwiches.

Having lost her dad to diabetes at a young age, she understood the American health crisis. Upon her move to New York in 2009 she became a board member of the New York Coalition of Healthy School Foods.

Capobianco affirmed that “Vegan or not, everyone will opt for healthier options in the near future,” as she founded the Vegan Divas baked goods and dessert brand in 2012. Her products are currently sold throughout the U.S. with a flagship location on the Upper East Side of Manhattan.

In addition to her successful health

conscious products, Capobianco launched her book The Vegan Divas Cookbook in 2014 and has monthly columns in Isweet Magazine and Organic Spa Magazine.

Her husband, François Payard is a third generation pastry chef from France who moved to New York in 1990 upon taking his first position at the three Michelin starred restaurant Le Bernardin. Years later, in 2009, the François Chocolate Bar opened in New York City. It has been described as “a chocolate jewelry shop.” In 2010 the causal bakery, FPB (François Payard Bakery), opened on West Houston Street in downtown New York City.

The year of 2012 proved to be a very successful year for Payard with two additional openings of FPB, a patisserie at the Plaza Hotel in the Todd English Food Hall and his first flagship store on the Upper East Side. In addition to his culinary success, Payard is the author of popular cookbooks Bite Size: Elegant Recipes for Entertaining, Simply Sensational Desserts, Chocolate Epiphany: Exceptional Cookies, Cakes, and Confections for Everyone, Payard Desserts, and Payard Cookies.

This year at “A Hamptons Happening” guests can expect a sweet surprise from Payard. He’ll be sharing his Parisian macarons and limited edition chocolate collection, which is 70% Dark Chocolate called “Gran

Cru” from the company Valrhona, located in the small French village of Tain L’Hermitage.

When he comes out to the East End, Payard goes straight to the market stands to gather vegetables and fruit, quality that far surpasses that of any grocery store in the city. And, of course, he likes to pick up some wine from the local vineyards. “I really love a deep red wine with dinner or a white wine to go with a summer fish.”

As a culinary power couple there are bound to be some differences between Fernanda and Francois, especially with such individual cooking styles. Payard explains, “We like to eat healthy -- regardless of the occasion!

Fernanda’s vegan and not a sweet eater. I’ll whip up some fresh grilled vegetables and she’s happy.”

As for the outlook of the culinary arts for the upcoming years, Payard predicts more locavore and farm to table cooking. “A move towards a healthier lifestyle where we create great flavor combinations without compromising the freshness of the ingredients. Simplicity is key.”

By Jessica Mackin Saturday night was the opening of The Last Night Of Ballyhoo at Bay Street Theater in Sag Harbor, the Tony Awardwinning play by Alfred Uhry, directed

by Will Pomerantz.

As Sag Harbor village bustled with excitement for the night's upcoming fireworks, the feeling was not unlike the excitement the cast had for the upcoming Ballyhoo, the lavish German Jewish country club ball. It made for a perfect night to see another wonderful play at Bay Street.

The setting is Atlanta in 1939. It's the premiere of Gone with the Wind, it's the party of the year, and the family's belief system is about to be forever changed.

The wealthy and important Freitag family is looking forward to Ballyhoo and all it will mean for daughters Lala Levy played by Erin Neufer (Nathan

Off The Wall

“Off the Wall / On the Wall” is a joint exhibition between CFine Art, Sculpture and The White Room Gallery in Bridgehampton. In “Off the Wall,” Cheryl Sokolow represents an exciting roster of internationally recognized artists, including Kevin Barrett, John Van Alstine, Isobel Folb Sokolow, Norman Mooney, and Rogan Brown.

They will be participating with sculpture and wall reliefs of all sizes.

Each artist fabricates his/her work with a discernible yearning, one that reaches far beyond the boundaries of their chosen material, revealing a unique visual language which engages the viewer on a variety of levels.

The White Room Gallery brings paintings by Beth Barry, Melissa Hin and Sally Breen in “On the Wall.” With abstract sensibility, each painter defines the illusion of space in their own personal way. Capturing nature’s exquisite light and atmosphere with its many colors and textures, these artists convey a sense of the East End. The show runs through July 17.

Art Southampton, the acclaimed contemporary and modern art fair, will celebrate its fifth installment on the grounds of Nova’s Ark Project in Bridgehampton beginning Thursday and continuing through Sunday.

Presented by Art Miami, this edition of the annual fair features over 70 prominent international galleries and showcase tens of millions of dollars’ worth of the finest museum quality art, sculpture, and photography from the 20th and 21st centuries.

Independent Dining Watermelon Gazpacho Ingredients (serves 6) 1/2 large seedless watermelon 1 English cucumber (finely diced) 2 limes (juiced) 1/2 papaya (fine diced) 1/2 honeydew melon (finely diced) 2 tbsp honey 4 plum tomatoes (finely diced) 1/4 c mango juice Method Begin by cutting away the rind from the watermelon. Cut the watermelon

into manageable pieces and blend on high until you reach a nice smooth consistency. Allow the watermelon liquid to sit for three minutes or so and skim off the white foam that rises to the top.

Once you have done this you can whisk in the lime juice, mango juice, and honey. All that is left is to make the fine knife cuts on all of the fruits and vegetables and mix them into the base. Pour and enjoy a nice refreshing gazpacho perfect for a summer day.

On Saturday, July 23, The James Beard Foundation will honor John Besh, multiple James Beard Award–winning chef, author, philanthropist, and restaurateur, at its annual Hamptons fundraiser and tasting party.

Held under a sprawling white tent at Wölffer Estate Vineyard, “Chefs & Champagne” will feature flowing

Champagne Barons de Rothschild, Goose Island beers, Wölffer Estate wines, and culinary offerings from a select group of over 40 fine chefs.

Funds raised at the event help support the James Beard Foundation’s wide variety of initiatives, including culinary student scholarships and the organization’s annual food conference on sustainability, public health, and nutrition. A silent auction consisting of fine dining experiences, wines and spirits, cookware, and culinary travel packages will also raise funds for the organization.

General admission for JBF Members is $200 and $275 for non-members.

VIP premium admission is $375 for JBF

“Serious Moonlight,” the LongHouse Reser ve’s jubilee year Summer Benefit takes place on Saturday, July 23. Illustrious notables who have been honored in the past will return to LongHouse to pay tribute to founder Jack Lenor Larsen in this milestone 25th year, and celebrate the future of LongHouse. Overseen by restaurateur Alice Waters, a jubilee feast will be served, and as the evening unfolds an anniversary short film will delight guests. This will be followed by dancing and a silent auction.
