Authors Night: 100 Stories Told Christie Brinkley

Robery A. Caro By Nicole Teitler Celebrity and charity. The two words are synonymous with the East End during the summer season. Appearances carry a certain allure with bold face names being tied to individual events. In a competition of the causes, it can be difficult to decide where to lend one’s time on a given weekend. For the avid reader, the winner is Authors Night. The chance to spy countless celebrities at an event is not unusual in The Hamptons. But at Authors Night, guests get an opportunity to truly meet them up close while supporting the East Hampton Library. Honorary Authors Night co-chairs this year are Eric Ripert, Christie Brinkley, Robert A. Caro, Dick Cavett, Mary Higgins Clark, Nelson DeMille, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Dr. Ruth Westheimer. Now in its twelfth year, Authors Night, held this Saturday from 5 PM to 7:30 PM under the tent at 4 Maidstone Lane in East Hampton Village, allows literati and casual readers alike to exchange words with their favorite authors and the chance to get a personal inscription as a memento of the experience. New writers arrive each year, adding to Authors Night’s unique charm. But while each genre is equally represented, it’s the familiar faces that sell out first. Repeat authors this year include Robert A. Caro, Nelson DeMille, and Dick Cavett. Despite the beach reading vibe of summertime, here on the East End, the most popular books are about timely topics headlining the news. Sheila Rogers, East Hampton Library Board President and Authors Night Committee Chair, noted, “People want to know the latest information and authors are coming to provide that information. We have serious readers and an intellectual group of people who want to hear about things firsthand if they can.” Rogers loves the conviviality of Authors Night, especially the chance for

Alec Baldwin, Hilaria Baldwin, and Gwyneth Paltrow attendees to interact with authors they admire. “It’s a phenomenal opportunity to meet someone you’ve read and followed for so many years.” Those who want to prep for those meetings can find a list of authors, their biographies and books on the library’s website, then go in feeling confident and in the know. Reads to keep an eye out for are Michael Weiss’s ISIS: Inside the Army of Terror, Steven Lee Myers’s The New Tsar: The Rise and Reign of Vladimir Putin and Christopher R. Hill’s Outpost: Life on the Frontlines of American Diplomacy: A Memoir. Or, for those interested in a more humorous spin on politics, Ted Rall’s Trump: A Graphic Biography. Ina Garten's most recent cookbook, Make it Ahead: A Barefoot Contessa Cookbook, is expected to be a big seller as more and more people are experimenting in the kitchen. You don’t have to write a cookbook to enjoy a good meal. After the book signing cocktail reception, guests can continue on to intimate dinner parties held at private homes of library supporters. Each private dinner features a selected author as the star. Those who dine can expect an evening of anecdotes, readings, and an overall insight into the author themselves. For those passionate about a particular work or writer featured, this is the perfect opportunity to connect on a level that’s rarely available. Authors Night raises around $300,000 -- ten percent of the library’s budget – each year. Dinner party hosts underwrite one hundred percent of the event. Proceeds from the fundraiser help support an array of programs at the library. Publishing houses donate about 100 copies of each book for Authors Night and all purchases go directly to the library. At first, the rise of the digital age seemed to toll a death knell for books. Surprisingly, book sales are actually increasing year to year. The library has embraced

technology, offering WiFi to visitors, downloadable e-books, movies and music, and even e-readers. Much of the library’s treasured Long Island collection is digital and keyword searchable. “We were worried for a while,” Rogers acknowledged, adding, “People have settled back, those who really like books still check out their books. Those who want to read them online can do that.” E m p h a s i z i n g t h e l i b r a r y ’s philosophy of encouraging feedback

from the public, she explained, “We’re undertaking a long range planning exercise hoping to engage the community to make the library better in whatever ways we need to. The library is a community center, not just a narrow window of books . . . we’re so much more than that.” Guests can purchase tickets, starting at $100 for the book signing reception, online at AuthorsNight.org or the day of the event. On Sunday, from 2 to 5:30 PM, the grounds will be home to the annual children’s fair -- a free event featuring children’s book authors, storytelling, games, carnival rides, and face painting. You can follow more stories from Nicole Teitler on Facebook, Instagram and Snapchat as Nikki On The Daily.

When Life Gives You Lemons … Make A Margerita!

Lori Schlakman, founder of Tabooze, a zero calorie tablet cocktail mixer, has partnered with the Samuel Waxman Cancer Research Foundation to bring “Cocktails For A Cure.” Here is her story. Also see our Facebook page for a video of Schlakman’s journey.

By Lori Schlakman

This past summer, immediately following the launch of my new innovation, Tabooze, I was diagnosed with cancer. Yes, the big “C” had found its way into my healthy, busy life. I, who went to spin class five days a week, whose kids nagged me [for eating] healthy, got cancer. Mind you, not any ordinary cancer, but a rare one, that took over two months to diagnose, after many painful, frightening tests and procedures. Life, which had dealt me plenty already, now presented me with the ultimate challenge. I would let cancer take my really great hair, and resigned myself to the prospect of undergoing one of the most toxic chemotherapy protocols [which would have me] in and out of the hospital, with fatigue and endless nausea . . . I would NOT, however, let cancer conquer my spirit! In order to keep my sanity and positive outlook, I needed to demystify the head tilting, soft whispering, and

“Christmas Palm”

endless nick names given to cancer in past generations. My friend Susan Greif and I started the campaign #Cis4, having others from all over the country and the world post their inspirational C word of the day through my social media page. Mine was, and always will be, “Cocktails.” My innovation Tabooze is a no calorie, cocktail mixer in an effervescent tablet (think Alka Seltzer: drop . . . shot . . . fizz -- where the latest Buzz is!). As a determined woman, with a background in product development,

I knew that creating a pharmaceutical grade, delicious tasting, calorie free product was not going to be an easy feat, especially in a male dominated arena. After three years of research, development, and marketing trials the product was ready. This all natural, electrolyte-infused tablet not only makes a delicious cocktail but it contains zero calories. I have now embarked on an important product sales campaign, “Cocktails For A Cure,” where a percentage of sales will go directly to help find the cure for cancer.

While doing extensive research to try and avoid undergoing one of the most brutal chemotherapy protocols out there, I made an outrageous discovery. Neither our government nor the giant pharmaceutical companies are allocating the funds crucial to researching a real cure, or even a less torturous protocol. It is apparently not in their capitalistic interests. They are raking in too much money from the poisons of the cysplatins, etc. I pleaded to be included in a study of immunotherapy that would spare me the horrors of chemo poisoning, but was told there was no alternative. Upon meeting with the Samuel Waxman Cancer Research Foundation, my hopes and vision were met by their mission and commitment to coordinating and supporting cutting edge research with the goal to find the cure and allowing these newer less grueling treatments to becoming more available to all. I had worked so hard on my innovation, having recently released [Tabooze] with multi-platinum recording star FloRida. But now, here was cancer. I was determined to do battle with all my spirit, and help inspire others to do the same. My friends and I raised a Tabooze toast to every good scan and every time I had finished a round of chemo or radiation. Mind you I could not consume any alcohol while undergoing treatments but another benefit of Tabooze is that it contains no alcohol and is delicious as a mocktail in club soda. I hope that by keeping our spirits up and continuing to raise social awareness through “Cocktails For A Cure“ with SWCRF, we can heighten the sense of urgency for a cure to end cancer once and for all. Please support my campaign, give people their spirit back, and be an inspiration. For more info visit www.tabooze. com.

Lately there has been far too many flags flown at half-staff. We could all use a bit more peace and love. That’s exactly what billionaire philanthropist, Hamptons party boy, and recording artist “Peaceman” Sir Ivan shelled out on July 30 at his famed Wilzig Castle by hosting The Koga Workout For Peace. Sir Ivan teamed up with celebrity fitness trainer Jon Koga, known in the industry as the “Founding Father of Fusion Fitness.” Koga is the creator of the “Koga Workout,” a 60 minute blood pumping routine that fuses the cadence and discipline of kickboxing with the body posturing, mental focus, and breathing techniques of yoga. For this particular event Koga donated his time and efforts. Koga is rumored to be one of the world's

highest paid celebrity fitness trainers, with his standard fee $2500 per hour. Sir Ivan also provided the music from his latest album Peaceman shines. One hundred percent of the profits from Sir Ivan’s record are donated to charities through the Peaceman Foundation. The foundation focuses on treatment and research for post traumatic stress disorder.

Conversations With Culinary Celebrities

By Jessica Mackin

On Sunday morning Guild Hall presented Stirring the Pot: Conversations with Culinary Celebrities with JeanGeorges Vongerichten. The morning began with a VIP pre-talk, and champagne reception, followed by a discussion with the chef. The series is hosted by Florence Fabricant, acclaimed food writer and regular contributor to The New York Times dining section, who interviewed Vongerichten. Though Vongerichten is one of the world’s most famous chefs, his skills extend far beyond the kitchen. A savvy businessman and restaurateur, JeanGeorges is responsible for the operation and success of three and four star restaurants worldwide. Jean-Georges currently manages and operates 30 restaurants across the globe, including 11 in his hometown, New York. Vongerichten has most recently taken over the restaurant at Topping Rose

House in Bridgehampton, which has received rave reviews. At the end of the discussion, one lucky guest went home with a $500 gift certificate to the restaurant. What's next for Vongerichten? He will soon be opening a vegetarian restaurant in New York City. Two years from now, expect to see his re-creation of the Fulton Fish Market in Manhattan. The series continues this Sunday with Danny Meyer, the CEO of Union Square Hospitality Group and the founder of Shake Shack. On Sunday, August 28, the series will bring Wolfgang Puck to Guild Hall. The famed chef has built a brand that encompasses three companies: Wolfgang Puck Fine Dining Group, Wolfgang Puck Catering, and Wolfgang Puck Worldwide, Inc. Tickets to each discussion are $15 or $50 to include the VIP pre-talk and champagne reception. For tickets and more information visit www.guildhall.org.

Buoy One

Buoy One Restaurant owner’s Rob Pollifrone and Lorraine Girard announced that they have purchased the building where they operate their second Buoy One Restaurant location on Montauk Highway in Westhampton. Pollifrone and Girard, brother and sister, along with Lorraine’s husband and chef David, opened Buoy One in

Riverhead over 13 years ago. After developing an almost cult like following they opened their second restaurant in Westhampton six years ago. It is this location where they managed to fulfill a life long dream of owning their own building. “We had been operating in Westhampton on a month to month lease but now that we own the building we can finally design and transform it into our dream restaurant!” Pollifrone explained. “Not just a makeover, we’re planning a brand new look and feel inside and out. Our patrons are just as excited as we are and have been offering great suggestions. Riverhead Buoy One will continue to be our 'flagship' restaurant. Having a fresh seafood market and restaurant in two locations allows us to serve the freshest product and gives us a competitive advantage.” Pollifrone and Girard have brought on a new partner, long time friend, restaurateur, real estate investor, corporate pilot, and retired world-renowned stunt pilot Michael Mancuso. Construction is planned for the fall. For more info visit www.buoyone. com or www.facebook.com/BuoyOne.
