‘A Mind Is . . .’ Benefit This Weekend

By Nicole Teitler

The UNCF's (United Negro College Fund) fifth annual “A Mind Is . . .” Hamptons Summer Benefit will be held this Saturday and Sunday at the private home of Nancy Silberkleit, co-CEO of Archie Comics. The benefit’s goal is to help students achieve higher education. Over 300 UNCF supporters are expected to congregate for the cause. The Keepers of the Flame Award is presented to individuals who support the educational system and encourage dreams for developmental knowledge. This year UNCF’s CEO and president, Dr. Michael L Lomax, will give the Keepers of the Flame Award to Reginald Hudlin, president of Hudlin Entertainment; Cathy Hughes, founder and chair or Radio One; and Derek Jones, managing director of GCM Grosvenor Private Markets. The “A Mind Is . . . ” benefit began five years ago after members on the UNCF leadership council in New York City suggested bringing an event to the East End. With many spending their summers out in The Hamptons, it was time to bring something to the area that engaged the community. Mistress of ceremonies for the twoday event will be SiriusXM radio talk show host Karen Hunter. On Saturday guests can enjoy a VIP

reception beginning at 5 PM. Starting at 6 PM, the program includes a designer Carlton Jones fashion show preview for Resort 2017, a silent auction, and entertainment by Yotoco. Scholarship recipient Ahmaad Dent, a rising junior student from Morehouse College in Atlanta, Georgia, will be guest speaking at the event. He will discuss his experience with the UNCF and the benefits the organization provides. On Sunday the festivities continue with a VIP brunch from 11 AM to 2 PM hosted by Bill and Dianne Plummer and Errol and Paula Taylor. The benefits of UNCF are growing. This year the organization has worked with local communities in Sag Harbor and East Hampton. Through their presence in local churches and schools in the area, the organization discusses the advantages of attending one of the 37 UNCF institutions around the country. Educating students about the college preparation assistance available to them and how to apply for scholarships is a priority. Since its inception in 1944 UNCF has raised over $4.5 billion in support of minority students securing better futures. Last year the event raised more than $140,000 for New York students. Fred Mitchell, VP of Development,

East Hampton Pop-Up Comic Con By Jessica Mackin

East Hampton Pop-Up Comic Con will be held on Sunday from 11:30 AM to 5 PM. The event will take place at 111 Cove Hollow Road, hosted by Nancy Silberkleit, the co-CEO of Archie Comics. The event is free and open to the public. This exciting event will host many professional comic book creators and vendors and guarantees a day full of fun and excitement. Visitors will be able to speak with writers and artists as well as have the opportunity to purchase original works of art and collectibles. Silberkleit is excited to be able to bring this event to the East Hampton community where she has been a resident for 21 years. She aims to share her passion and excitement for comic books with the East End community. Silberkleit is also an avid, soughtafter, global speaker who will speak at 3 PM on “Understanding the ingredients that go into the unacceptable behavior we call Bullying.” Indy caught up with Silberkleit for a Q & A about the upcoming event.

Tell us about the first East Hampton Comic Con and how you came up with the idea: I belong to a group in White

“Christmas Palm”

Plains (whiteplainscarescoalition. com) that tackles various issues in the community. One is bullying. At one meeting I suggested we do a comic con with vendors that could utilize the graphic literacy platform and display inspirational words against bullying. So two years ago Comic Con White Plains was created. It was a hit and we are going into our third con. Not only do I have a desire to be socially responsible on planet earth, I have a passion to spread that love for reading. One of my personal quotes is "Comic Books + children = reading, knowledge, confidence, and creativity!" I have decided to call these events “Pop Up Comic Cons” and look for opportunities where I can spread the enjoyment that folks get from this literacy platform. The pencil to paper creating the graphic language. I was very pleased to see at the White Plains Con there were folks that came to seek info, advice on the issue of bullying. Outside of Archie comics, I started a foundation called Rise Above Social Issues Foundation, the flag ship comic book is called RISE ABOVE, What One Can Do When Bullied. Not only has the comic con become a platform for me to highlight our beloved Archie Comics but also use various graphic stories to help others with difficult issues such as bullying.

Tell us about some of the comic book creators and vendors guests can anticipate seeing at the event:

Archie Comic Publications, Valiant Comics, Bronx Heroes, and Atomic Comic Book Store. There will also be various writers and artists. Two authors are coming from very far for this event. E.J. Stevens, author of 15 speculative fiction books will be

joining us from Ogunquit, Maine. Her three series (Spirit Guide, Hunters’ Guild, and Ivy Granger) feature strong female protagonists and have won numerous awards. Curtis M. Lawson is a comic creator and novelist from Salem, Massachusetts. His work has been published by Arcana Studios, Permuted Press, and Platinum Studios. His most recent graphic novel, Mastema features artwork by Spider-Man artist, Nico Leon.

What are you most looking forward to?

Meeting the people, artists, writers and being able to see first hand how the love of comic books grows and grows!

Do you plan to make this an annual event in the Hamptons?

Absolutely, and I am projecting what occurred for East Hampton’s Authors Night will repeat itself for POP UP Comic Com. It continues to get bigger and bigger, a big bravo to the folks behind Authors Night!

Te l l u s a b o u t t h e a n t i bullying initiatives that will be incorporated in the event:

Bullying is a global issue and universally a no-win situation. As event organizer, my presentation on bullying at 3 PM will discuss how comic books provide positive examples of coping skills and constructive responses while promoting empathy and community through graphic literacy. Vendor participants will feature characters and plots that illustrate bullying behaviors, their impact on the bully, the victim, and the observers, as well as how to counter such destructive behaviors. Learning about bullying in such an approachable, understandable, and fun venue can help kids feel less isolated and powerless and more able to face difficult interpersonal challenges.

Press Prints To Selfies

New Inter national Center of Photography Exhibition at Southampton Arts Center presents “Winning the White House: From Press Prints to Selfies.” The exhibition opens on Saturday with a big party open to the public from 5 to 7:30 PM. In light of the fact that we are in a major campaign right now, this exhibition is very well timed. The show runs through September 11.

White Room

An opening reception will be held on Friday from 6 to 8 PM. The show runs through October 10. The exhibition follows Gerald and Sara Murphy from when they first met in East Hampton. Gerald and Sara Murphy were, to many of their contemporaries, the most beautiful couple of the 1920s.

Artist Studios

Marjorie Silverman, J. Whitney Stevens, and Carol Ross will host an intimate tour of artist studios on the East End to benefit the New York Foundation for the Arts (NYFA) on Friday. Led by Christina Mossaides Strassfield, Museum Director/Chief Curator at Guild Hall, the group will visit the studios of artists Mary Ellen Bartley, Mia Fonssagrives-Solow, Toni Ross, and Claire Watson. astrology & all Week of 8/3/16 - 8/10/16
Highlights of the week: Mars enter Sagittarius on Wednesday (8/3) after being in the murky waters of Scorpio since last February. We begin to feel a glimmer of relief from all the tensions, which surround us. However, as the Sun in Leo provides these hot summer days, try not to let our own tempers rise too. Things could get quickly out of hand. It’s a good time to take a vacation, if possible. Aries (3/20 - 4/20) Passions are still running high as you wish that everything would change. Keep your cool at work. Perhaps it is time to create some new memories as romance surrounds you. Taurus (4/20 - 5/21) Keep your plans simple or postpone them to a better time. Take extra rest because you can invite some minor illness by overdoing. Enjoy your loved ones by sharing and caring together. Gemini (5/21 - 6/22) Friends come and go and are a source of joy and confusion. Keep those talks at work civil or postpone them to cooler times. A secret can be revealed. Who knew? Cancer (6/22 - 7/23) Decisions about the workplace will get easier after September arrives. Set your goals in place but don’t share those tender feelings with just anyone. Romance is very much in the picture. Leo (7/23 - 8/23) Love, dating, and children are all sources of entertainment this week. Magic is real, if you look for it. Any travel plans should go well. Virgo (8/23 - /9/23) Tired? Take the time to take care of yourself this week. Let them pamper you for a change. Any plans concerning your home should be put off till next month when you will have more time to devote to them. Libra (9/23 - 10/22) Love relationships and friendships need to be nurtured or revised. Clear up any doubts with honest communication. Once the air is cleared, you will feel better. Scorpio (10/22 - 11/22) Don’t argue with the neighbors or your siblings. The uncertainty you feel will need to be examined with a cool approach. All problems have solutions if you are willing to work them out. Sagittarius (11/22 - 12/21) Exotic travel appeals to you right now and with careful planning your dreams can come true. The money will be there, so don’t worry. You may find fun and romance on this trip. Capricorn (12/21 - 1/20) All work and no play is a recipe for disaster. You need some serious time to chill and if it is by the pool or the seashore, it is even better. Don’t be fooled by someone’s sob story (or at least get a second opinion). Aquarius (1/20 - 2/19) You are able to express yourself in new ways that are quite effective. If coupled, romance can move to the next level. If single, be open minded to meeting new people as an introduction can change your life. Pisces (2/19 - 3/20) Time is ripe for you to banish any old habits that have been plaguing you. You might hear some surprising news about a friend or an associate. Decide if you want to continue the relationship.

Independent Dining Chaga Island’s Super Brew Deliciously good for you, Chaga Island’s Super Brew is no ordinary beverage. The next big thing in the feel-good drinks department is bursting with antiviral, antibacterial, and immune-boosting properties. One hundred-percent organic, vegan, shelf-stable and raw, it’s also tasty and refreshing. Made only with large pieces of organic chaga that have been sustainably harvested and slow-brewed, Chaga Island Super Brew is also the first of its kind on the market. Through a proprietary formula, Chaga Island has managed to provide its customers with a shelf-stable beverage that is still raw, retaining all of the beneficial properties of a home-brewed chaga tea. Chock-full of goodness, the classic version has only two ingredients— organic chaga and pure filtered water. Best enjoyed over ice, the wild-

harvested natural drink also comes in an organic agave nectar version for those who enjoy a hint of sweetness. An all-purpose healthy fungus, chaga, often referred to as “the king of medicinal mushrooms,” has been prized for its beneficial properties for thousands of years. Chaga chunks were even discovered in the travel packs carried by Otzi, the Ice Man, who lived circa 3300 BC. The a Long Island-based company is created by copartners in health, R.N. Debbie Falborn of Sag Harbor and certified herbalist Bridget LeRoy of Moriches. This super healthy brew will be good for your body and your taste buds. L e a r n m o r e a t w w w. chagaisland.com.

Broadway Reporting From

(& Sometimes Off)

By Isa Goldberg

How Adam Strauss arrived at the psychopathology of living in Times Square – or anywhere in Manhattan - seems pretty obvious. He describes it easily at the opening of his solo show, The Mushroom Cure. “I simply stand in the most high-traffic area in Times Square — which is invariably in front of the Hershey Store — and shout my

sales pitch, and wait for my audience to come to me.” Strauss, a stand-up comedian, describes handing out flyers for his one-man show, which in reality is at The Cherry Lane Theatre, through Sunday. By the time Strauss arrives in Times Square, however, he’s already diagnosed the behavior of a man

on overdrive – OCD, he calls it. The traumatic event that led to his obsessive compulsive behavior came from working as a first responder on September 11, counseling children who had lost a parent, he explains in the show. As a performance artist, Strauss achieves the fine art of tension – which is essential to creating theater, and especially challenging with only one person on the stage. So Strauss also portrays, in seamless ways, the other characters in his search for a cure, and when necessary he uses audience members to engage us in his life struggle for one calm, unstressed, and peaceful moment.

IN THE NEWS

Meanwhile, he complains. He complains and exudes anxiety about his relationships with women, especially a new one he meets standing in front of the Hershey Store, his sex life, shopping at H&M, and the many selfinvolved behaviors that New Yorkers typically pursue. Still, his quest for the cure persists: from psychotropic drugs, mushrooms and psilocybin to Cactus, which he reduces to a nutrient rich paste, and which comes close . . . But, the process of creating this enlightening mush is endless. As directed by Jonathan Libman, the 90-minute evening brings humor to Adam Strauss’s autobiographical story, which is essentially about researching psychedelic cures for his mental illness. And while Strauss’s scientific studies are revealing, they are no more conclusive for him than they are for us, at least those of us who seek to live in a city where life is necessarily dogged and frenzied.

A summer romance that ends too quickly, Himself and Nora, at the Minetta Lane Theatre, comes to a close on Saturday, and what a disappointment that is. A small stage musical, it recounts the love affair between James Joyce and Nora Barnacle, whom he met in 1904, and who became his common law wife and the mother to their two children. Only later did the autonomous and stubborn-minded Joyce agree to the religious institution of marriage. His war with the Catholicism of his beloved Ireland is a central theme here. In the role of James, Matt Bogart is a charming, supple performer. Together with Whitney Bashor as Nora they create the domestic lives that supported one man’s literary genius. As James tells her, “The words are all yours, Nora,” implying in his way, that his work was because of her. The supporting cast is lithe, with a handful of actors playing multiple roles as their children, the priest (Zachary Prince), Ezra Pound (Gar y Troy, standing in for Michael McCormick), and Sylvia Beach (Lianne Marie Dobbs), the first English language publisher of Ulysses. As told here, the novel’s release in the United States, was obstructed by prevailing obscenity laws. Those seeking literary insights may feel slighted, however, as the focus here is about the man and the woman behind the art – the life they led together and, indeed, the struggles they endured. That is, in fact, much to the credit of Jonathan Brielle, who wrote the book, the music and the lyrics, without over-reaching. The result is small stage musical, which plays with intimacy, immediacy, and a kind of simplicity that thrives in small, Off Broadway spaces. Like the music, Kelli Barclay’s choreography moves from Irish folk dance, to classical, to boulevard entertainment. Directed by Michael Bush, the production is never embarrassed by its carnival-like element, aiming as it does to amuse, and to give light to a passionate romance.
